Just finished the show, was surprised by how good it was. I think it's one of the very few anime where it actually improves in overall quality as it goes on-it takes 4 or 5 episodes to really hit its stride. It's at that point where the characters stop feeling annoyingly tropey and come into their own, the animation and writing improves, and the fact that it actually delivers on its premise and delivers a number of well-earned twists is really awesome. A real hidden gem of a series.
The ending didn't feel rushed as an anime watcher. You have no idea how many anime try to finally tie up loose ends by the last 10 minutes of the anime... But I agree on wishing there was more. Really hope the author would do that by making an Astra Afterstory to tell the future great adventures of Captain Kanata :D
the ship looking out of place actually fits very well in my opinion, seeing as it was made a century before the show was set making it look like it is of a different period or a relic
Personally, as someone who didn't read the manga, I found the first episode's human chain to be a real highlight. All these characters seemed flawed, aloof, and unknown, but when it came down to it they both cared about a classmate and were inspired enough by Kanata to do whatever they could to save them. It made me want to get to know them all more and was a nice message for human decency and hope. It did make me think that things would work out teamwork wise... until the reveal of the communication system tampering, which lead to more intrigue because this enemy had helped saved them too.
I just finished the manga and I really enjoyed. I had no problem with the ending and in fact prefer it as it is. The whole point of the story is their journey so once they get home the story is basically done and if they would have expanded the exposition into another 2 chapters or more it would have made it feel like the story was dragging. The show had its emotional climax with the confrontation, leaving little reason to add an additional conflict
The split shots were honestly almost inevitable in the anime. It is literally a giveaway of Masaomi Ando as the director. Personally, I've come to love his style of animation. And while I admit the anime started off a bit iffy, this is now firmly in my Top 10 favourite anime of all time. ^_^
This was a really compelling watch! You did a great job of going over aspects of a series I really appreciate nowadays like shot composition and some of the technical aspects of a show. I’ll give the manga a shot seeing as I really really like the character designs.
I think I have a theory on why the ending was rushed. Considering how close the lore of the series is to the Void Century from One Piece and the fact that Shueisha are the distributors, there is a high likelihood that Kenta was forced to end it without continuing whatever he had planned for the series.
I remember watching this show when it came out and liking it a lot. I especially appreciated that it was just 12 episodes and finished. Yeah the ending wasn't too amazing, but overall it was good. I am glad someone did a video on it, I felt like it was an anime that was largely forgotten. Thanks for the great video.
A little detail on the aspect ratio I noticed was when the Astra crashes into the side of that canyon causing it to lose the engines they actually violently shake the black bars themselves to better illustrate the impact. I had noticed what they were doing with the aspect ratio (particularly in the flashback when Ulgar steps out of the trees to see his brother over looking the city and the bars slowly fade away), but that really solidified to me that they were using this editing in a way I hadn't really seen done before.
Hey Lowart, I was if you could do a review series for Danny Phantom, I think that would be so cool. Also was wondering when were you going to continue your Avatar the last airbender series?
If I ever watch Danny Phantom and enjoy it enough, then I might make a video on it. Still, that would be a long ways in the future. Also, unfortunately, I haven't gotten much work done on the Avatar: The Last Airbender series. I've spent most of my time working on smaller videos, the FMA series, and another set of videos that I just feel more passionate about making right now. However, I do plan to eventually return to Avatar, but I don't have any plans for it currently. Sorry if that's disappointing or frustrating to hear. I know some people have been waiting a long time for that.
i would have liked a season 2. and thats not saying it should have been anything like 1000 episodes which a ton of animes accidentally fall in to. but it builds up the relationships and your so invested! you get to know there past but then your like " well what will they do how will they move on?" and then it just ends. everyone is happy the end. i wanted to see a bit more space ....maybe see how they became different from there parents. all in all not a bad watch at all. but heavy on the side of " this is 12 episodes and it wraps up very quickly " i mean the main character gets a cool robot arm, barely even uses his anti gravity shoes, and he JUST got like 9 people to trust him with there lives .....come on thats like .....you gota go on a dangerous mission after that XD
I absolutely enjoyed this anime! It's not a god-tier anime, but this one of the best anime I've seen in a while. Been a while since an anime gave me Post-Anime Depression. Never mind its flaws, they're pretty outweighted by the pros by a long shot!
Genndy Tartatovsky also tends to play around with aspect ratios alot and his shows are some the few times I feel split screen layouts actually enhance the presentation.
I can really see the Paneling idea work if used right and sparringly for things like simultaneous action shots and reactions, but it looks like it is used at complete random, almost like they're using it to just be lazy.
i read the manga and the one major thing that bothered me was the fact that charce got of basically scott free. sure, his sentencing shouldn't be as harsh as everyone else involved in the conspiricy, considering how he wasn't an adult and his testimony, but the attemted murder of 8 children should still not be glossed over so easily.
I think why that happened is because it was considered to be ‘brainwashing’ in a way. Children are susceptible to adult’s words as they are role models. In charce’s case, the king (aka thing) is his role model and he must follow everything he says. But when Kanata appeared I think that’s when he realised adults can be aholes and made him do what he did (evident in the fact that he wanted to be arrested) but the group said they wouldn’t as he was a better person. That’s what I think happened at least.
He’s still working on it behind the scenes. He just wants to make sure he has a batch of videos done that he can then upload at a consistent pace. You can keep up to date through his Patreon
It will be back! I don't want to promise when, but when it does come back there will be a lot of videos fast and/or the videos will be long. I've been working a lot on the project as a whole, trying to find the best ways to cover everything I want to, and it feels like I'm very close to having most of the scripting done. Thank you for your patience with it though. Some other stuff in my life (like University work) took precedence over UA-cam for some time, but I should be back to making a decent amount of stuff now.
Don't worry about asking haha It's expected since it's been so long. Unfortunately, I haven't gotten much work done on them in a while. Been focusing on getting a ton of stuff done for the FMA series, as well as another set of videos I'm more passionate about at the moment. Still, as soon as I'm done FMA, I will get back to Avatar.

i agree with the exposition. It seems very rushed and would've been great if it had more arcs after they had arrived. However they just ended it like that.
It's Kanata's Book. The Manga we are reading is the Book Kanata wrote and the final episode/final chapter is just what Aries is writing down. The story was only meant to portray their adventure through space.
One thing I like a lot about the anime, they fixed a plot hole in the story. Huge SPOILERS below about one of the biggest plot twists in the show: I watched the anime before the manga, and went to read the manga right after, at some point in the manga one of the characters mentions "Earth", I think it's Charce in one of his biology speeches, although he does know about Earth all the other characters don't, so it doesn't make sense. In the anime they took that away, his biology talk is still there but doesn't talk about Earth, so nobody ever talks about Earth and its existence up until the plot twist is revealed.
I too found the ending lackluster. Would have preferred a more cynical turn. Ex: Instead of the Astra civilization welcoming the crew of the Astra ship to land, the Astra navy could have been ordered to destroy them. One of our main characters would feel suspicious or they receive a warning and are able to evade and escape but will be pursued by military forces. And thus this would pave a way for more of the manga and a second season of the anime of them traveling the stars while always being pressured for time as the military would never be far behind. This would be far more preferable because its hard to see the communistic, militantly atheistic, and Orwellian civilization of planet Astra as being willing to reveal their lies out of the goodness of their heart.
What are you talking that sounds like a worse ending honestly. Also,The Government didn't give up the truth out if the goodness of their hearts, the Crew literally threatened them exposing the lies to the news media.

Honestly at first I was kinda annoyed and thinking to stop watching. After few episodes I start actually liking it.

I don't think that I've seen any of their other work, so I didn't realize that's something this director does frequently. Interesting to know though!

I really enjoyed this anime.I just started picking up the manga so seeing the difference/similarities between the two is a big help.
I actually don't mind the widescreen aspect ratio that much. It actually feels like I'm watching a movie.
Great video man hope to see your channel again soon when you cover another fulfilling show like this one ^^
Most fulfilling ending I've ever watched, was not expecting to actually be entertained in anime people having fun inside spaceships this year =w=

Grand Budapest Hotel is a great film that is notable for using all aspect ratios for different time periods in the story mainly.

I personally hate aspect ratio in this show. This type of ratio is often used in more serious movies and series, and this anime is not that serious.
It was to cliche, unfunny, awkward and childish and I couldn’t take these characters seriously most of the time like I’m suppose to.
