Kanata no Astra and Granbelm we’re both so overlooked. Granbelm has some the Re:Zero people behind it, I recommend it though. First episode doesn’t give a ton of context, it only gets better from there.
Did anyone also notice how after the kids landed on Astra, the camera resolution changed from cinematic to standard 1080p? I felt like that was a deliberate choice to symbolize that no longer is the perspective of the kids and the world at large narrowed by the lies created through the false history. We're now able to see the full picture thanks to the truth, which our protagonists recovered. That was a really clever trick after we got used to seeing the anime in a cinematic resolution the whole way through.
This show kinda got the Re:Zero treatment. Had an hour long first episode and hardly used the opening. But damn this is the first time I’ve seen an anime with an hour long first episode AND last episode.
The last episode being double length really threw me off. When the midway transition happen, I was just ready to close the player when I realized it was only halfway done.
I owo noticed this show on the summer chart and thought a show about some kids in space sounded good. In the first episode when Ares was too far from the ship, and Kanata was like "we'll join hands and form a chain" and rescued her and I was freaking out at how uplifting the scene was, and then whoever was like "we'll just planet hop back home" and I was just so excited to see a bunch of kids put their heads together to survive against all odds. what a good anime
Been watching this series on a weekly basis, and have to agree this was a hidden gem of this Summer anime season. These characters had so much development throughout the circumstances. The twists was worth it because it had us the audience involved. This show did wrapped everything up in the end, and was a deeply satisfying conclusion. This show will be missed, but when one journey ends, a new journey begins. Kanata x Aries happened!

I was so proud of this adaptation. I was so worried they'd start cutting things and leaving stuff out from the manga, but no. Somehow, they managed to bring everything together in just 12 episodes. Well done.
I just finished watching this yesterday on Hulu and boy was I in tears at the end. I also new Aries’ story was sus because when Charce gave his somewhat false story to the group earlier on, I immediately noticed Aries spelled backwards is Seira and that’s when I got super invested in her story. This is absolutely a great anime. I’m sad it’s over. 🤧
Yes! Thank you for reviewing this! Fun fact! The manga was concluded in 2017, but this year it won the 12th Manga Taisho Awards, along with being nominated with two other awards this year (including with 23rd Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize, which also has The Promised Neverland in the running). So I'm glad that even if the anime didn't have as much buzz in the west (at least, from what I saw), it did get the recognition domestically. Honestly, I do personally think it's a masterpiece too. It hits all the notes that I love, personally. I'm very happy that it had a positive and definitive conclusion, with that strong message
One of the things I loved was that even though I was kinda upset when someone in the comments spoiled who the traitor was in early episodes, the series still managed to fool me along with the crew when Charles lied about his backstory. Definitely one of my favorites shows of all time 10/10 for me.

Aye, completely agree. Masterpiece is definitely a bit much, I wouldn't even put it in the top 3 for the season, but it was an enjoyable anime and one I don't regret watching. Now, masterpieces? Well, personally, Kimetsu no Yaiba has been one easily, as well as the Fruits Basket reboot and Vinland Saga has a very good chance of becoming one already as well
Agreed. It's good an entertaining but that's it. I really liked the characters but the world and its background were rather "naive" and idealistic. Having a unified language and eradicating religion it juts not possible. Don't the Japanese remember the Christians who kept their faith through 250 years after the empire violently hunted them? And that's just one example. Don't they remember they themselves went through three failed attempts of romanization of their language?
It has been too long since I have watched an Anime that has a good solid story, proper character development, and answers all the question in the end leaving it without it feeling rushed or dragged out. I have not felt the feeling of emptiness in my heart for so long. It reminds me of when there were Anime’s that had good story’s and did not over stay there welcome. I would, without a doubt call this a Masterpiece.
this was a Great adaptation. When i read the manga is thought it was canceled since it was a jump manga and since it ended so early. The manga has been done over 2 year now. So i guess it was not canceled but it was a completed story to begin. Guess the creator wanted to write a short story and oh boy he did and it was amazing. To bad it was not as well known to the west as it aired and was underrated, guess japan loved it enough to adopt it after 2 years after its ending. This was a gem of a story with great characters, and a great story. Oh Chibi to answer your question, the mangaka for this series was the same person who wrote Sket Dance which was a comedy manga that was pretty popular in Shonen Jump.
I fucking loved this anime. Finally a anime with a good start and ending this anime gave me chills for a hour straight after I got done with the series 😂
Haha. You weren't alone on that one. I think I started to suspect her after Kanata entered the cave and the sphere disappeared. This show was cunning as hell. 😁

chibi, chibi, and here I thought you missed this great show. so much mystery, who done it, character progression, survival story, and dang those cliff hangers every episode. glad you caught up and loved it, I loved it so much I checked it on the shonen jump app.
OMG YESSS. Thanks for reviewing it since it's very underrated this season. It reminds me of the quality that Assassination Classroom had. Not a prolonged series so the conclusion is satisfying, the art style, we got to see what they've become as they grew up, characters that seem stereotypical but are used well (I mean if you've seen Sket Dance, that's no surprise. It's the same author for Astra btw Chibi if you wanted to know. The same guy that used to assist on making Gintama before making his own version that is Sket Dance.)
I’ve been on an anime binge recently and I gotta say this was one of the bests ones I’ve seen yet. It’s short yet heavily filled with character development. The amount of plot twists and red herrings in this show was staggering. Yet despite that the show never felt convoluted. Everything was paced very well. I highly recommend this anime. Very well done.
They really did a fantastic job with this show. I've taken some time to give it a rewatch and it really holds up so well. Easily a top 10 show from 2019 and I love how consistently good it was. The kind of space adventure you just don't get to see anymore. Space-anything has been minimal for anime during the isekai era. This was just a great adventure to watch. Just nice to see a complete story adapted so well. No having to wait and hope for sequels or a better remake of it. This is great and will stand strong for a long time.
It goes without saying that in terms of a show that can manage a 12 episode run time, and feel totally completed, this is a champion of a show. It feels good when you get a complete, good story once in a while. It's a breath of fresh air really, i very much enjoyed this series, surely a must watch from this season.
from the start to mid series I gave it a 7 but after that it became 8-9 and the ending I agree that was a masterpiece. Awesome ending. Had everything that I wanted to see in how a series should have a conclusion.
If you pay attention to the opening you can see that Aries name is the only one written upside down. I think this is a wink to where Aries name comes, which is Seira turned upside down. It's not that much but I love this kind of attention given to details and I think it is part of why this anime is so good.
Amazing indeed. All the twists from ep7 onwards wew. Loved prev ep with Kanatas right hand man part. The finale tho...one of the best epilogues I've ever seen. Felt so satisfying. Kanata asking Charce for Aries hand in marriage was so sweet. Charce ditching his job as king to go travel lmao. So happy with the 2 ep long worth finale. AOTS. PS Aries a cute.
The fact that it was made as a complete story, as opposed to simply running for as long as it could before cancellation, definitely worked in Astra's favor. Everything that happened did so to serve the story, and it culminated in a satisfying conclusion as a result.
I'm glad you ended up watching Astra later on in the summer season and I agree that it is a solid story from start to finish with all those plot twists. I started watching because of the cute girls I saw in the trailers and stayed for the astonishing storyline. It's more than a scifi and comedy. I liked how Quitterrie and Zack did end up getting married and clones can be a possibility.
Oh the timing, just finished it as well! Aand i loooved it!! They couldve made it 24 episode long tho. Writing is really good but i wanted it to slow down a bit to enjoy it longer :/
Watching a video related to the series after finishing it today. Tried to lengthen my watch for somedays to make the magic last. But yeah, a very much recommended anime!
I binged watched this too. I didn't hear much about this until nux-taku mentioned it and I gave it a shot. This will go down as a masterpiece. "Push through obstacles to reach your destination".
For me, the first episode just got me hooked. It was a survival story that actually had a POSITIVE message to give out, and the part where they all worked together to save Aries was just amazing. I predicted that their plan would be to hold hands to extend the length of how far they could reach, but that didn't take away from the episode at all. Due to that first episode, I just had to recommend it to my friends, even though the anime had just begun.
Breathtaking....

from the start to mid series I gave it a 7 but after that it became 8-9 and the ending I agree that was a masterpiece.
Thank you for talking about this I’m a subscriber now 👍
Thanks for getting me into this anime! I feel enriched after finishing it haha
This is my favorite anime number 1
Amazing indeed. All the twists from ep7 onwards wew. Loved prev ep with Kanatas right hand man part.
The finale tho...one of the best epilogues I've ever seen. Felt so satisfying. Kanata asking Charce for Aries hand in marriage was so sweet. Charce ditching his job as king to go travel lmao. So happy with the 2 ep long worth finale. AOTS. PS Aries a cute.
I wish they had a time slip to when Aries and katana gets married and the others in it too
THIS ANIME WAS TRULY A MASTERPIECE IM IN LOVE 😭❤️
Though If you think abt this is something that could happen and if that what would happen to our cultures
Kanata was the MVP💪🐐
Oh the timing, just finished it as well! Aand i loooved it!! They couldve made it 24 episode long tho. Writing is really good but i wanted it to slow down a bit to enjoy it longer :/
Watching a video related to the series after finishing it today. Tried to lengthen my watch for somedays to make the magic last. But yeah, a very much recommended anime!
Just watched it since I saw a clip on youtube and it was great.
I binged watched this too. I didn't hear much about this until nux-taku mentioned it and I gave it a shot. This will go down as a masterpiece. "Push through obstacles to reach your destination".
I just finished this anime, its A M A Z I N G
For me, the first episode just got me hooked. It was a survival story that actually had a POSITIVE message to give out, and the part where they all worked together to save Aries was just amazing. I predicted that their plan would be to hold hands to extend the length of how far they could reach, but that didn't take away from the episode at all. Due to that first episode, I just had to recommend it to my friends, even though the anime had just begun.
i absolutely LOVED IT
