Pinaud's after shave lotion with the top hat dude, is like a time machine. It 100% smells like a 50's barber shop full of grandpas. Complete nostril nostalgia.
Love the Pinaud Clubman Musk and Bay Rum. So delightfully delicious. I don't care if there is more natural or quality stuff, Clubman smells like childhood. The barbers who started in the 1950s were retiring when I was a kid in the 1990s. Then, came salons with frosted tips in the late 1990s and 2000s, then 25 year old hipsters who decided their barbershops needed to look like the 1920s. A lot of times, style over substance. I miss those old (often Italian) guys. Or like, Matt's barber says..."cal-logne?" before he gives him a splash of the Pinaud. Pro tip: All Pinaud aftershaves smell even better for longer when decanted into a glass bottle. Use an old bottle or buy a cheap glass spray bottle and give it 2-3 days and see what happens! I love the design of the packaging of the tuck of Rex Platinum. Very early 1960s, matches the Clubman beautifully. Nice job, Matt! Bay rum doesn't have bay leaves we cook with (bay laurel), but pimenta racemosa, a bay leaf you get from the Caribbean. Stinky pirates found that steeping pimenta racemosa in rum gave them something that could de-stink them. To try to replicate pimenta racemosa, some companies add those baking spices (e.g. cinnamon, clove) Pronunciation: Not Pee-nod/Pin-wad...Pee-Know (French). Never tried the shave butter (and I think they make a shave cream...ingredients are too chemically, meh, we can do better). I ordered the body wash, almost fainted from sniffing it, and sent it back for a refund. I know they offer a huge range, but for me, Pinaud is an (possibly even thee) after-shave company.
Clubman Bay Rum...! I would get a haircut and some times they splashed on Vegetal, sometimes Bay Rum or any of the other scents Clubman had... Loved getting a haircut back then.... Still have a bottle of Bay Rum... Good video Matt...
To be completely honest, it really doesn't matter what razor you have, as long as you have Rex blades, you are going to have an awesome shave. 100% blade of the year.
I've been trying all sorts of blades with my Konsul. The Wizamet were my favorite until I got the Rex blades. Rex is now my go to in the Konsul. For my kamisori I'm still using Sharks because they are milder. I need more practice before I move to a more aggressive blade. Would be nice if Rex Supply were to make a nice stainless kamisori shavette. :)
As others have said, these creams and butter act better (for me) as a pre-shave rather than the full lather. I have a couple of non-lathering creams and they're great to form the base for a proper lather, but quite grim to use on their own.
Hey Matt! All those shave butters act the same. They provide just enough glide so you can get through the shave. For me, they aren't enjoyable. I use them for a preshave. They work well for that use. Give me a good shave soap any day over the shave butters. Thanks for the review! JimG P.S. The Clubman shave soap comes in a 2oz container and lathers up great!
Love this razor👌managed to pick one up here in the UK from a antique shop for £10 looks like new including the case and and the original razor blades(probably won’t attempt to use them). Cheers🍻🥃
Love all the Pinaud after shave scents...inexpensive, feels good on the face, and the scents last. Maybe the shave soap can go in my travel bag...might be worth a try.
The shave soap in the puck is good. I use 5 of the Clubman aftershaves in rotation daily and recently got the soap. It produces a nice thick lather and has a nice scent. That will actually be my travel soap going forward.
I don't use shave butter to shave with. Instead I use it like a pre-shave oil. A little dab on my hands, then rub hands together and work it into my face. The go ahead and lather as usual. I've found it works great that way.
Cremo, Barbasol 1919, these "latherless" creams are neither fish nor fowl to me. They aren't as convenient as just using a basic foam like Barbasol or Gillette Foamy on the days you are in a super rush, and they aren't moisturizing/pleasing enough as a good shave soap/croap (or even Proraso Cream). What and who are they for?
Thanks for the review. I'm a daily shaver, but I will pass on the Clubman shave butter and stick with "classic" shaving soaps and creams. I do enjoy all my Clubman splashes...Pinaud, Whiskey Woods, Brandy Spice, Tequila Tease, and Bay Rum.
Great review, Matt! Clubman's Shave Butter is good for a quick shave or clean up, or when you travel and don't have room for the brush or the shave bowl. Clubman's Classic Barber Shave Cream IMHO is a little better, BUT nothing compares to a Shave Soap. I actually like to use the Shave Cream as a nightly moisturizer. It goes a long way and smells great. Clubman's VI Bay Rum is still one of my top 5 scents. I love the clove scent! It's a classic as is most of Clubman's aftershaves. Whiskey Woods aftershave (part of Clubman's Reserve line) has a great scent for Fall/Winter. It also comes in a powder as well. One last thing, have you ever considered RE putting out a Bay Rum scented product yourselves? 🙂
You didn’t mention it, but it looked like the cream was difficult to rise from the razor between passes. I’ve encountered the same thing when using similar products.
Matt, do you sell Rex blades exclusively through Razor Emporium, or do other vendors carry it? I want to try the Rex line of blades but probably don’t need enough other shaving products to justify the shipping costs.
Congrats - you're the winner of the Weekly T-Shirt give-away! Please contact us at help@razoremporium.com with your address and size and we will get it shipped out right away! Thanks everyone! Stay tuned next week for another giveaway! - Razor Emporium Team
Hard to beat a good soap. Shave butters have not been my thing and I'd much rather enjoy a soap. Right now my go to soaps are Moon Soap amoretto, PAA Cavendish and Droid Black, A&E Cherry Cola and Monte Carlo. The Cherry Cola smells so good that I want to eat it.
I used another companies shave butter when I was shaving with Harry's razors.Same kind of non-shave, shave. I still haven't tried a Bay Rum product of any kind. Looks like that would be a great place to start. I haven't shaved my goatee off in 30 years. I can't imagine. 🎃
I am not a fan of ANY shave butter, which are only good to take on a trip, perhaps??.. I love the bay rum although I can't say it lasts very long but it is very nostalgic. Which bay rum do you think is the longest lasting?
I've used it and it does not smell like Old Spice at all. It has a bold bay rum scent and actually will last a couple hours. If I use Captains Choice bay rum aftershave and later splash on Clubman bay rum, the bay rum scent from the combination will last almost all day.
I’m gonna go against the traditional flow here. Since I want very precise straight edges on my mustache and goatee I actually prefer a smooth butter-style cream. I want the razor to glide effortlessly without harsh unnecessary abrasiveness. Though I like the shaving traditions, it is very important for me to see every line. Too much lather hinders this (for me). I would classify my skin as smooth, and normal-to-sensitive. I own several high-end double-edged razors, but my “go to” razor is still the Above The Tie limited edition solid bronze system with medium gap. With that system and my skin type I have found the Astro blade to provide the best shave results for me…no irritation, very close shave that lasts for the entire day, and perfect edging. The Feather blades are incredibly sharp, but found them to be both inconsistent in edge and generally irritating to my skin. The Astro blades provide me a nice balance and quality control has been incredibly consistent. I do recommend changing a double-edge blades provide every 3-4 days if you do shave each day. Dull blades will damage skin tissue and hair follicles. Thank you for all your reviews! I thoroughly love them. I also love, love LOVE my REX Ambassador Adjustable, stand and leather case from REX Supply! A very responsive system and superior design.
I have a, made in England, TTO Gillette DE razor, that has a long, narrow, dark colored, tapered handle, kind of like the one on the knack, but it's a little different, and it doesn't have a metal button piece on the bottom of the handle, like the knack does. Is it a different version of the Slim Twist or is it something else? Oh, I have several Clubman aftershaves, and I liked their shaving soap 🧼 (I've used it all up) I even still have some of their old shaving cream in an aerosol can that must have menthol in it.
I'm very annoyed with Pinaud Bay Rum. Got one from Shave Nation...smelled bad. Then I got another from Maggard's & smelled equally bad. This used to be a quality bay rum. What happened???
I dunno' about this soap, bro. You could even lather Proraso Cream with your hands, and get a better lather & shave than this. I've done it. Maybe Pinaud could just stick to aftershave. Love their Citrus Musk. Currently in my monthly rotation.
Why would you insult Arko stick in such a way? 😉 At least it provides decent leather and smoothness, and you don't have to use half the product for one shave. On the other hand, their aftershaves are a class for themselves. Good one
Its a travel shave cream Or a quick get the shave on right now cream. You still need to add a little water to your shaving brush and create a more much more intense lather. I can create a lather that is just as good as making one in a lather bowl. Are you kidding me.
It’s in no way a C.O. Bigelow Premium Shave Cream. That’s the best ever tube shave cream. And I also have some Vi-John shave cream that is quite good from India 🇮🇳.
The only ‘brushless’ cream I find to be good is Cremo - it really has the slickness needed. I keep a tube around for extra quick shaves, fortunately they are few and far between. It does work as a pretty good pre-shave though
That music must be a requirement for male product reviews, I keep hearing it used. As to the Pinaud Bay Rum, that will rip your face off. I have a bottle and rarely use it, my skin can’t take it. Clubman, citrus musk, lime sec, those are terrific, but their bay rum, 🥵
Noooooo.... Their instructions are TOTALLY wrong. It's like the Cremo brand. Cremo is great if you do it right. Put a thumbnail size of that cream in a BOWL and whip it up.
Unfortunately, the Pinaud ruined This Iconic Product - the Clubman series - with their very cheap plastic bottles (one of the cheapest plastics which is not only very unpleasant to see but also has an unpleasant effect on the scent of the product and even the ability to store or transport it, especially in warm climates). Also can't they see that those plastic tubes (and plastic containers in general) are the ugliest and most impractical kind of container for products like Shaving Cream or Toothpaste? Especially these kinds of giant tubes with those giant caps. It is a shame that today even the most Iconic British, Italian, German, Spanish, Portuguese, French and American Brands package not just their shaving creams, but some of them even package their aftershaves this way! About this shaving butter, I must say that they make these kinds of stuff (Butter) for 10-blade Cartridge shavers of the new generation, cause their 10-blades can not handle the richness and density of NORMAL SHAVING SOAPS or CREAMS. By the way, you should try the ROYALL LYME OF BERMUDA. PS: I did not see you wet your face or shaving brush. Did you accidentally forget to do it this time?
Looks like just more crap paste from a tube like Harry's shave cream. But, thanks to Harry's shave cream and the useless cartridges it got me back into wet shaving which I hadn't done since the late 60's.
Pinaud's after shave lotion with the top hat dude, is like a time machine. It 100% smells like a 50's barber shop full of grandpas. Complete nostril nostalgia.

Love Clubman aftershaves, Bay Rum and Osage Rub especially

I love the design of the packaging of the tuck of Rex Platinum. Very early 1960s, matches the Clubman beautifully. Nice job, Matt!

I prefer shaving soap over cream. I like the process of work with the soap too. Thanks for the review.

Pinuads bay rum and special reserve aftershaves...nuff said. As old school as old school gets.
I didn’t like Bay Rum at first, but it’s one of those scents that is starting to grow on me
Love love love that brush 😍😍😍😍
I don't use shave butter to shave with. Instead I use it like a pre-shave oil. A little dab on my hands, then rub hands together and work it into my face. The go ahead and lather as usual. I've found it works great that way.
I love the Rex blades. My absolute go to:)
My woman doesn't like the smell but I think the Clubman bay rum is awesome and is an excellent Value
My Pinaud go to is the Clubman special reserve.
I had the exact same problem with Cremo.

@ woo hoo! I’ve emailed you my info, thanks again for picking my comment. Tell Matt he should have kept the handlebars on the mustache! 🤣
I have the Pinaud shaving cream in the tub and find it ineffective for shaving with compared to shaving soaps.

Shave butter is not intended to be used with a brush.
Can always try 😜
@@RazorEmporium It's not going to work. Trust me.
