- Beef stew is the BEST hearty and satisfying meal! Chunks of beef chuck roast are seared until golden, then simmered with vegetables and herbs in a rich and savory broth that's complex in flavor but really simple to make. The whole family will love it!
Stews are good for the soul - and this traditional beef stew recipe from my childhood is no exception. It's like another version of my Dad's favorite Irish lamb stew, but with delicious elements of pot roast. The beef chunks are melt-in-your-mouth, the vegetables become tender, and the red wine, tomato-y broth continues to build flavor as it simmers. Plus, my house is filled with the most delicious, savory aroma whenever I make this beef stew. I think you're going to love it as well!

So now I have a classic beef stew, Irish lamb stew, and apple cider beef stew (in my cookbook!). What flavor should I make next? I'm sorta thinking a vegetarian sweet potato stew. Any other ideas?? xo - Lisa
How about a no-bean chili, for those of us that don’t eat beans? You have some great chili recipes, including vegetarian, but all have beans. I’m thinking of a ground meat chili with lots of other veggies. I’ve made some that was good with grated carrots, but you are always so creative. It would be fun to see your ideas.
Moose meat, venison or rabbit stew. Even for those who think they don't like game meat, if stewed with some acidity in the broth you can barely tell it's wild meat.
My favorite stew comes from Bavaria, as do I. "Pichelsteiner stew" is wonderful rustic home cooking. To give you an idea, I'll quote from Wikipedia:
"It has been proven that the recipe comes from the landlady Auguste Winkler, née von Kiesling, who comes from Kirchberg im Wald. She ran an inn in Grattersdorf until her death in 1871. The stew was probably named after the nearby Büchelstein, where the Büchelstein Festival was celebrated on a forest meadow from 1839 onwards. The quickly prepared, warm dish enjoyed general popularity there.
In interviews at the beginning of the 1960s, Federal Chancellor Ludwig Erhard repeatedly stated the Pichelsteiner stew as his favorite dish, which finally made the stew known nationwide. [4] [5]
Mäxchen Pichelsteiner (from the village of Pichelstein) is the name of the hero of Erich Kästner's 1963 book The Little Man.

@@anitas5817 That's a great idea! I'll add it to my list for a future recipe. Thanks!!
@@Shria9 And I do love me some venison!
Rutabaga and/or parsnip is a nice addition, if you like the flavor. A few drops of Worcestershire sauce adds to the bold flavor of the broth. Everyone has their own tweaks, but you can't go wrong with this classic recipe!
Yes, I agree! So many great ways to make it. :)
Yes! I just made a beef stew yesterday and used turnips in place of potatoes. It’s something my great grandma used to do and it’s delicious!
You can also sub out the potatoes with radishes if you are going lo-carb. Cooking the radishes really calms the heat that they can sometimes have and they are really tasty.
Parsnips are great
I like sweet potatoes in my stew .
I love Lisa always takes big bite of her food but still being elegant. ❤
Love adding dried prunes to a slow cooked beef, adds a touch of natural sweetness.
Oooh, love that idea!
I wouldn't have thought to cook the meat for a whole hour before adding the vegetables but it makes sense. The meat would melt in your mouth after 1 1/2 hours. And the taste of the meat/onions/garlic would be divine. What a great informational video! Thank you!😊
The meat will taste much better after it gets a good sear. Plus, you also want that leftover "gunk" from searing to help flavor the soup!
Oh, I know to sear the meat first. But after the sear is when I add my chopped vegetables, broth etc. I've never added the red wine, but I'll definitely try your recipe for my next beef stew. 😊
Your cookbook has made meal prepping for my family of 4 so helpful! It’s definitely stew weather here in Vancouver 🇨🇦 so this video came at the perfect time. Thanks, Lisa! ❤️
Oh yay! Hope this new recipe helps to warm you up a bit!
I made it last night with some gluten-free biscuits and just wow. So hearty and delicious!
I made this. It was theee best stew I have ever made. Filled all of the directions but added mushrooms. This recipe will now be a staple on rotation in our home. Thank you!
Omg!! This is the one to make as the weather gets a nip in it... Who here wishes they could be Lisa's neighbor? 🖐🖐
Made this recipe the other night. I'm not a fan of beef stew, but this was delicious! (Made even more so by the onions and carrots I grew in the garden) I made your baked salmon on Monday and your Tuscan Chicken last night. I just love your recipes. They're delicious and easy to follow! Thank you!
Made your delicious, rich and filling stew today ! It was a BIG hit! ❤ Thanks again 😊for sharing.
Hi Lisa !
I just received my Healthy Meal Prep cookbook that I ordered from Amazon. It is beautiful and I love it! I’m so looking forward to trying the recipes I’ve bookmarked while looking through it.
I so appreciate that you put so much care into all the details of this cookbook, as you do with your UA-cam videos.
Thank you for inspiring so many of us to choose wisely what we eat. ♥️
Slow cooked food is the best! I love adding small pickling onions in with the vegetables. They are so sweet.
A very good presenter ... clear, understandable, easy to follow. Thank you
Thanks for the wonderful recipe. Is so good, specially for this weather.
Just made this today and omg so delicious! Thanks for your recipes and clear demonstration as always
Thank you. I love your recipes. They are simply elegant and delicious! ❤
Glad you like them!
Looks absolutely delicious! Thank you.😊
Lovely! Just right for cold days! Thanks
It's definitely a cold-weather favorite!
Yum. Simple & easy to cook. Thank you❤
So simple and delicious! Enjoy ❤️
Love beef stew! Peeling veggies is a must for me, whether carrots or potatoes! I love adding peas to mine. It’s a great pop of bright green! I always add canned stewed tomatoes too. I find the tomato paste is enough of a thickener for mine, though I do use much more than you did-the entire small can!
You can definitely add more tomato paste if you'd like!
Oh, this looks delicious! Thanks for sharing!♥
Hope you enjoy 😊
Looks so delicious, thank YOU
It's seriously a bowl of pure comfort!
I made Beef Stew for the first time ever last week and used your recipe. OMG it was delicious ♥
Just from the colour of the broth you can tell how rich and delicious it is. 🤤
The flavor is unbeatable!!
Thanks for this amazing recipe! Your instructions are clear. I especially appreciate how everything is so easy to follow; how you include substitutions; as well as storage info but without making the video too long either. You're super amazing! Thank you so much! 😊❤

Excellent as usual, thx Lisa ❤

That Stew looks absolutely delicious! Reminds me of my mommy's Stew. Yummy!
I’m going to try the lamb stew. You’ve given me great ideas. Thanks so much
This is so tasty. The red wine competes it. Having a glass of it while making this is wonderful.
Thanks so much.🙏
The red wine really does make all the difference!
My mouth is literally watering while watching this!

Just made this recipe and Thank You Lisa like so many of your recipes this one is definitely a keeper. Followed it step by step amazing taste and flavours. Yum Yummy!
Glad you enjoyed this beef stew!
I just found my new favorite cooking channel.!
My mother's stew. Highly recommended. My mother added one tea-spoon sweet red pepper along with the onions. Sometimes she skipped potatoes and served them with fried ones. In this case, she preferred less liquid in the stew.
Thanks for sharing your mother's variation of this! ❤️
Amazing recepee 🎉
That looks delicious.
Amazing recipe video
I love it! Gracias
I'm still working through garden surplus and have made veggie-beef with barley, split pea, a ginger cabbage soup with ground pork, minestrone and spicy chicken enchilada soup in recent weeks. This classic beef stew is another favorite 🎉thanks for the inspiration
You're on a roll! Hope you enjoy this beef stew next 😊
I love this and your veggie soup recipes… perfect for this time of the year. I’ve tried many of your recipes and the flavor been fantastic. Thanks for all the research and hard work.. of course I appreciate you sharing these recipes so that myself and others can enjoy 🧡🍲🍁

Glad you loved this soup and the cookbook! ❤️
My mouth is watering watching this. I need to try this recipe. I only came here to find meal prep ideas and have now been on this channel non-stop for 2 hours! 😂
This stew was delicious! Made it last week and the flavor was so rich and just amazing! I added v-8 and a little water to the leftovers to make veg beef soup 🥰
Very tasty and beautiful. I will cook for my family tonight.. Making warm and healthy soul 😍😙. Thanks Chef ❤

I look forward to making this once our So Cal weather cools down. We’re headed to 91º today!
Isn't this weather just crazy?! Shorts and a tank top in Oct! 😂
It is crazy! Time to go take a hike to burn off the sweet potato brownies I’ve been eating.
Even though I live where it’s warm (FL) I’m on my way to Publix to get ingredients! Yum I love stew any time of year! Thanks for sharing. 👍
Yum!!! They sounds and looks so wonderful! 😋 Thank you for sharing, it's definitely stew weather around here... Sweata Weatha 😂 too 😊
This is one to save for cold weather season!!
Haha! I'm still in shorts weather, but still making this stew!! 😂
@Downshiftology You are a trooper!! You're the only reason I'm not disappointed that summer is over around my neck of the woods. Here in Washington state it's time to come in and cook! I'll be getting your book. 😃🤗😋
I made this tonight. It was really good!!
Yay! Glad this beef stew was a success 😊
Ty Lisa!❤
Enjoy!
I'm so happy to see this recipe. Recently made beef stew and watching this video I'm going to make a few tweaks to make mine better.
Awesome! Would love to hear your thoughts on how my version turns out. :)
This beef stew looks awesome!
Thanks so much! Hope you enjoy it. :)
Can’t wait to make this!!
This stew looks so good! Today feels like a stew day here in NC. I've never had Irish stew before. Always willing to try something new. Irish soda bread would go nicely with it. Yumm! Thanks and take care.
Both stew recipes are great, just different flavor profiles. You'll have to try both and see if you have a favorite! :)
@@Downshiftology Good morning! Do you have a recipe for the Irish stew? I'll try.
I think this will be my next weekend meal prep😁
Woot! I love having containers of this in my freezer. :)
@@DownshiftologyIt was fantastic. I made it into a crock pot meal. I did everything until the liquid, then put all it in the crock pot. I cooked for about 4 hours then put in the veggies in for the rest of the cooking.
I hate eating the same meal multiple times in a row so definitely froze it up. My son (adult) even liked it and he usually just eats pizza and burgers. Thanks for yet another fantastic recipe.
Ooh been waiting for this since you posted earlier! Beef stew is so delicious and comforting, and you’d think it would be easy to get right, but I haven’t been happy with it when I’ve made it. I know yours will be great, Lisa!!
Can't wait to hear what you think of my version!!
Just made this for dinner today!
Hope you loved it! 😊
@@Downshiftology it was delicious, my kids loved it too! 😋
Thank you❤
Hope you enjoy this beef stew recipe!
Sounds delicious, cannot wait to make it. Currently in the process of moving/renovating, it means lot of takeout food, so I'm really craving some hearty food especially with this colder weather. I think this will be the first meal cooked in my new kitchen 😀
Oh yay, happy to have the honor of your first recipe! Hope you enjoy it!
I tried it tonight it was great. 1st time making stew
Thankyou😊
Been looking for a tasty beef stew recipe. Gonna try this one out now that "soup weather" is here.
Excited for you to try this recipe!
@@Downshiftology One thing I noticed is how similar this is to Beef Bourgignon. Only missing the bacon, pearl onions and mushrooms.
Lisa cant wait to try this recipe! I love all of your recipes! Could you tell me with what side dish it can be served please?
This is great served with lentils or rice - basically, a base that can soak up all that goodness!
I love your meals. Mmmm
I make excellent beef stew also. YUM, have a pot with leftovers in the frig as I reply.
Nice! A beef stew never fails for delicious leftovers.
I would like to put a small amount of sweet peas in my beef stew, very good recipe to try, so simple to make, love home made beef stew.
🙂WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW🙂Outstanding!👍This is simply fantastic.🙂We love it! 👍Big like 🙂Thanks for Sharing amazing and incredible content. 👍🙂 🙂Stay blessed and keep Sharing! 🙂🙂
The pro tips of my french mom, is to put only red wine, not broth. And I assure you, it is so good ! And we usually prick an onion with 4 or 5 cloves :D We call that '' Boeuf bourguignon'' :D
And for the frenchy but not healthy touch, replace the oil by butter at the begining :D
Thanks for sharing! I'm sure more wine would give this such a delicious flavor.
Thanks for the arrowroot tip! gluten free gal here 😊
Lisa, what kind of red wine do you use in this recipe please? I love your recipes so much 😊❤
To give this stew a bold and rustic flavor, grab a bottle of cabernet sauvignon or pinot noir. But there’s no need to buy an expensive wine, just one you typically like to drink since there will be leftovers!
I grew up with Dinty Moore beef stew........THIS IS SOOOOOO MUCH BETTER LOOKING! I don't eat a lot of red meat anymore, but I may have to make this very soon 😋
Thinking you might need to make an exception for this recipe 😉
i do almost the same but i really like adding sprout brussuls.
The more greens the better!
Thank you for this great receipe!
What can I use as a substitute for red wine vinegar?
You could use apple cider vinegar or really any vinegar.
Yummy 🥰
Looks delicious, will definitely make it this week! Also, I really like the glass storage jar with snap on lid, where did you get it please.
Awesome! You can find those in the meal prep section on my Amazon storefront here: www.amazon.com/shop/downshiftology?ref_=cm_sw_r_cp_ud_aipsfshop_aipsfdownshiftology_DSVGWTCW3MB302C9S9B9
This is amazing and i used sweet potatos instead of white, yummy!
Glad this worked out with sweet potatoes instead!
@@Downshiftology thanks, i don't do well with white potatos
Your stew looks wonderful. I make virtually the same stew but in my pressure cooker. The only differences are that I add the seared beef and veggies into the pot at the same time, and I don't put in flour or cornstarch while the stew is cooking. Instead, I make a cornstarch slurry and add it after the cooking is done.
Nice video thank you, your cooking is in the gas stove yet others use the oven so which is better ?
I can’t wait to make this. Looks absolutely delicious. Do you have a barley replacement for gf beef barley soup?
Love beef stew
Me too!
I looove a good stew🥰
This version is perfect to cozy up with this season! Enjoy 😊
Yummmmm!
Looks good, never made the stew on the stovetop, always in a crock pot.
Me too am wondering if still as tender and cheaper to cook.
This stovetop version works just as well!
Matab kuliner yang enak sekali♥️♥️♥️
The Co2 "Corkscrew" is an almost legendary murder weapon from "Columbo". I didn't know they still existed. It's a good thing that no "fugo" is served.❤
Omg, that's so funny! I'll have to keep that in mind next time I have a dinner party. 😂
