I'm late but here it is, the reason they wrote the ending the way they did was to give the feeling it actually happened, as Luffy is the only one on the crew who remembers what happened and he'd not talk about it just as within his character to do, and so leave open the door that, this could have happened within cannon and change absolutely nothing unlike many of the other movies

however, this movie if canon will have a huge impact on luffy. From his attitude, to his strength, it will be very influential if this movie is canon in the series. Although all of his comrades wouldn't remember the incident.
however, I must admit. Luffy's development in this movie is extraordinary, when compared to the series. 20 episodes = 1 movie.

Maybe because oda want to develop the characters relations along the length of the manga. I mean, if we see the confrontation and resolution of the conflict within the crew in the final part of the movie than it might reduce the impact of the coming arcs and the development within, like in usopp vs luffy, robin departure in water seven, and sanji departure in zou to name a few

The thing I Love about the movie is the message that they absolutely nailed.
"Just because you loose all your friends, doesn't mean you loose the ability to make more."
The movie doesn't cheapen the lost of friends, showing in great detail the true horrific pain of loosing those close to you.
But yet shows that even in our darkest times we can still eventually find people to be friends with.

It was like a straight up Horror Movie story. All the cliches are there:
A group of friends, an unknown place in the middle of nowhere, a promise of “game and fun”, mundane conflicts, characters picked one by one until the Final Girl/Boy remains, a nightmarish creature of unknown origin, ghost stories…
    I love it. 😍

Even the music nearing the climax becomes horror focused. When Robin goes looking for the special flower of the island and Baron shows her the giant tube like...whatever it was and "Is That a Flower?!" plays and it matches so well with Robin's disbelief and visible disturbance before Baron aims his arrow at her and the Lily Carnation laughs manically while it's small eyes bulge open.
And of course "Duel That Defies Description" is pure horror as it was the moment Lily reveals the corpses of the Straw Hats joined together to form its body to Luffy.

Well the other movies yes lack the horror and most of the manga and anime lack it other than important parts like, sabody, thiller bark, marine ford arc the full arc considering the escape from impel down. But I feel they have gotten better with this considering luffy died in the last chapter of the manga, losing too kaido 2-3 times actually 4 times. But your pretty much right not a lot of horror in this series I'm glad tho I don't like seeing the sad parts as it effects Luffy horribly. Aces death was a lot I don't like the scenes like that even though it made luffy a hell of a lot stronger I think it was uncalled for considering luffy almost died with ace

I would beg to differ that the ending was perfect. I think it was going for "the nightmare is over" kinda deal. It was such a relief to see Luffy knowing his friends were OK and back together. Despite being the only one to know what happened, it didn't matter. The fever dream was over and everything was well again.
Kinda reminds me of the Thriller Bark scene with Zoro taking all of Luffy's pain and only a select few member of the crew knowing what actually happened.

I think the ending would have been wayyy more impactful if Luffys crew actually died, and then Luffy was left with the other captain and the family "new nakama".
That would have floored me and probably make me think about the movie for a longgg time.
I think a good movies goal shouldn't make you feel good or happy, it should change you and leave a lasting impression on you.
Yea the movie did that on its own, but an ending where everything goes right and everyone is fine kind of undermines the whole entire goal and tone of the film.
The movie isn't cannon. They should have took than and ran with it.
It would go from just a oddly scary, well done, darker one piece movie
To a LEGENDARY piece that would be up there with Z and the upcoming RED movie that would be on the minds of every OP fan, because it would be COMPLETELY boundary breaking.

What I found eery about the film is that the characters act more real than usual. There’s no triumphant badass music every time someone does something cool or showed how resilient they were. The use of silence just shows how real and tense the situation was and luffy seemed like a real person not an unwavering ball of willpower. The fact that not everything is glorified made it even more scary when I thought they were gonna die Beacuse they didn’t seem like main characters dying they seemed more like real people caught up in this mess about to die. And their captain who could of beeen any other captain (luffy) trying to save them

Thing is, I own the original Soundtrack and the CD contains a lot more music than what ended up in the Actual Movie: Kohei Tanaka and the other composers did write music for the two Luffy vs. Omatsuri-fights, but the director apperantly chose to go with utter silence instead. And as much as I like the music that was written, the scenes work better without it. Adds an additional layer of eerieness. Its a bit like the Luke vs. Vader-Duel in "The Empire strikes back", which also largely plays out without music.

It's interesting to see Luffy called out, because as good of a friend as he might be, he is a pretty irresponsible captain. He takes unnecessary risks many times, you just don't think much about it because it usually has no serious consequences

    • @TheMetastasia
      @TheMetastasia 2 роки тому +66

Yeah he really is like this. You could say that WCI was the first time Luffy actually followed a plan (because the Plan was 90% built around him being a decoy target. In every other Arc Luffy goes for the boss and is seperated there. He needed to be seperated and break into Impel Down to actually work with others to reach his goals.
As ResturningSun says, most of the villians in One Piece don´t go for the Straw hats and half of the ones that do for revenge. The only exceptions are:
      1. Buggy on Loquetown
      2. CP9 somehow (they were mostly for Robin alone).
      3. Kizaru and the Pazcfista (after Luffys attack on Don Carlos).

When other villains "kill" the strawhats, the strawhats memory will still live on through the legacy of whoever claims their bounty/claims victory over them. It just makes them bigshots. Blabbers gonna blab, and tell the tales dead men cant.
      But this
this is just some guy on an island who has no plans to blab to ANYONE about this. He in a way is already dead. Inside at least.
and when HE gets the strawhats
they dissappear from the history books.
      He has no legend
And is erasing theirs too. it just hits different. At no other points would the strawhats have a dead end and simply stop existing except here. nobody would ever know what happened and nobody would ever care to check it out. and even if they did, they would have the same fate.
That concept alone is a gutpunch to experience it in the first person

It does feel like Oda did want to dip into the ideas Movie 6 introduced with Thriller Bark and Saebody. Moira in particular was likely inspired by Baron Omatsuri, since Oda had a gap in the 7 Warlords anyway and Oda felt the Baron is definitely on the scale. Brooke also joins the Staw Hats as a positive reflection of the Baron in the same arc.

I think the movie was held back a tad by it’s run time. I loved the idea of driving the crew apart, but at times it felt forced. Nami and Usopp’s conflict specifically. Nami didn’t give him any chance to explain himself (not to mention Usopp reacted like a baffoon) and if this was pre grandline Usopp I’d have bought her treating him that way and his reaction, but this is an Usopp who’s already proven himself by breaking practically every bone in his body fighting in Alabasta. Then Luffy just watched his crew act weird, his naturally high emotional intelligence reduced to nothing for the sake of keeping the plot going. If they had maybe 5 extra minutes to flesh out the conflict I’m sure they could have nailed it.

Yes I know One Piece has it's dark moments like the slavery and and all the characters that been through.. but you never seen this ... it really is like a Horror Movie plot, and the most heart breaking of all.. I literally watched without blinking for how disturbing seeing the crew 'almost' nearly killed or eaten by that flower like THE HELL!

The horror writing in this movie is absolutely phenomenal. I love how at first Omatsuri’s crew act like your typical bombastic pirates but over the course of the film, as Lily clearly gets more and more eager to eat, the facade starts slipping and they act more and more unusual. Like with Muchigoro withering or Kappa’s reaction to getting hurt

I think alo a part of the strawhats conflict is that it's not real. Quite a bit of the conflict is out of character, but subtly. Nami would notmally not be _that_ upset at Usopp for abandoning. So long as they won. She's much more goal oriented than that. Usopp would never have drawn attention to Nami's history, because he knows it upsets her. I mean. Sanji. Withheld. Food.
So the entire thing just _feels_ wrong. But it's not bad enough that you can easily pinpoint it without thinking about it.
Which is also why I don't think they need to resolve the conflict afterwards; it was never actually there.

      @norasyikinali6283 Рік тому +13

Yeah, the small ooc moments are most likely deliberate design by the director. That meant the Lily Carnation has been subtly affecting them since the moment they joined the games. It's how the island consumed the other crews - it enhanced the emotions that usually a person can just push aside for the sake of crew cohesiveness and made it at the center of their minds instead. Most of the pirate crews are truly close to each other, but spit out enough vitriol, enough dissatisfaction can crack even the strongest relationship. It's poison, basically.

Baron Omatsuri is definitely one of the best film villain for One Piece. I have to disagree with him being better than the likes of Shiki or Z. They're both intimidating and sympathetic in their own ways. They also managed to really raised the stakes especially with Shiki. Not to mention the fact that Strong World is kinda an antithesis of this film and shows the difference between the bonds of the Straw Hats now vs where they were in Omatsuri. Since Shiki himself also challenge the bonds and trust between the Straw Hats. I agree with the ending being cut short kinda left a lot to be desired. But it kinda opens up to interpretation for the audience whether the Straw Hats lost their memories about the events, or presumed all of it to be a bad dream or just make up offscreen. Meanwhile, for people who read/watch the canon storyline, can just assume they amend all of it during Water 7/Enies Lobby.

One other thing about the Baron that I absolutely love is that he is a dark parallel to Brook. Think about it.
Both were captains before the Great Pirate Era, having at least hear of Gol D. Roger.
Both lost their crews in very tragic ways. The storm and the attack respectively.
Both suffered for a long time and losing everything they had.
But while the Baron gave into his despair and became incredibly bitter, Brook rose above it and eventually, eventually, found new Nakama in the form of the Straw Hats.
I love dark parallel to characters, as they show a different path a character could have taken. It's very interesting and kind of makes me wish for a Fanfiction of this movie, that happen after Thriller Bark. I would love to see how Brook would react to the Baron and vice versa.

The order which the strawhats get devoured is a reverse of the order when they joined Luffy during the east blue arc
Sanji, then Usopp, then Nami, and finally Zoro
Edit: Another poetic thing i like in the movie is that it was the cowardly father who gets to kill the Lily, using Baron's own weapon against him.

  • @weebthatdoesweed1479

This analysis is extremely well done, as well as the movie acknowledging as well as reflecting the crew's chemistry, as even though it seems the crew has been together for a long time presently, they've only been together for a year, excluding the 2 year time skip as they weren't together then. Furthermore no one there actually dreamt of being a pirate, but after Luffy saved them from some situation or another they wanted to follow him even though he wasn't very responsible. If this movie was cannon it would greatly represnt the flaws of the crew and especially Luffy, as well as the imporance of his crew to him because the Saboady incident even though similar, was done by Kuma who had no malicious intent and instead did it as a means of saving the crew.

It is likely Moira was based off the Baron, since Oda admitted he was missing seats on the Seven Warlords and it's likely he found Baron Omatsuri a compelling candidate. But Oda hates horror by his own admission, even if he liked the tragedy and emotion of the Baron, so he softened it with a deliberately over-the-top, cartoonish rendition of horror, more Nightmare Before Christmas than Nightmare on Elm Street.

    2. *Learn to tell when something is truly lost, in which case you should let go and move on* (the baron with his crew).

Saw the title, thought “oh it must be the one with the giant plant-like thing that absorbs people” (I was pretty young at the time so I don’t recall everything), not disappointed. This movie is fucking unsettling

I watched the One Piece movies in one week when I was on summer vacation. I had insomnia and it was like 5:00 am. I decided to keep on watching the One Piece movies as to take advantage of time because the first movies felt like a chore to watch. When I started watching I felt the animation was really off and different, it was creepy. The scene of the giant gold fish was so unsettling to watvh while there was barely any light out and that's not even mentioning when that guy starts withering while talking to Nami. I've reached post time skip so I've seen Luffy's desperation before but the tone the movie set was unbelievably somber and definitely left me extremely creeped out like I had just woken up from a fever dream

i thought it was just me!! the ending was relieving, but they were like "hey what happened?" as if they've been brainwashed.
i would love to see just a few more minutes of them sailing off or hanging out at the end, but overall this movie was great!
i cried a bit too much at the end where the strawhats was slowly revealing themselves, hearing their voices was such a relief!! especially after all of.. THAT.
also, the scene where they were whispering/calling for luffy sent absolute CHILLS down my spine...

another thing that boosts the tension in this movie
this is past luffy, meaning he doesn't any of the gears yet which is another reason the baron is so threatening, it's because he's a tangible threat to luffy and the stawhats at this point in time, cuz it's before they become super overpowered (minus nami and chopper of course)

In my country when i was younger tv channels used to air one piece movies during holidays for kids, and i remember watching this one during christmas at night when i was 8.
To me who liked One piece bc of it's large cast and world, exaggerated colorful characters and the wholesome bond between strawhats it was incredibly disturbing to witness how they talked to each other as the trials went and the buildup to the last part.
Sanji refusing to feed smn, usopp and nami accusing each other of being backstabbers and such felt incredibly off putting and out of character.
Not to mention the desolate quiet atmosphere of the island and empty large buildings made me even more creeped out.
I never would've guessed that of all anime One piece movie would be the one to disturb me the most.

The hold this movie had on me was wild. I must of watched it like 5 times the first time I found it. The director has directed some of my favorite anime movies such as Summer Wars and Digimon. So it was so awesome to see he did a one piece movie, his style is so distinctive and fluid. I cannot sing this movies praises enough. Still my favorite one piece movie to this day.

Yeah, it definitely left it’s mark on the series- with the macabre soundtrack playing a part in how dark the series gets later on and how increasingly nightmarish the imagery gets

Jokes aside, Papa and the Toothbrush Mustache father are very likable.

You know, adventure in nebulandia I would say is really similar to baron omatsuri, but that move actually has fights and it's more like something that could actually happen in one piece, more than a mutant flower
