The quiet part is sooooo true! Like, you notice them start at the beginning, but it's lowkey and could borderline just be an everyday gripe. But then as the pressure builds, each of the conflicts grow and grow

another detail i love is sanji’s bubbling anger when luffy is cheering on the chef taking everything luffy praises the chef for as an insult to his own skills, which is alarming because sanji isn’t usually self conscious about his skills as a chef and we know luffy would never doubt his skills either

I think the reason why Nami slapping Usopp feels so unsettling is because of how such gags are usually portrayed for comedy. One Piece is great at giving visual cues for situations from the very beginning, so later on it is easy to distinguish when the situation is supposed to be funny and when it is not. In all the gags, Nami usually smacks people on the head with her face distorted in One Piece-typical style. The actions are quick, and feel like pure reaction rather than something deliberate.
In the scene, however, the slap feels intentional. It is not just Nami reacting to something dumb Usopp said, this is her being deliberate and willing to hurt her crew mate, not once, but twice over. Same thing with Sanji and Zoro, it's this intent to hurt someone they consider a friend that creates a very foreboding and suspicious atmosphere.

    • @EyebrowsGaming
      @EyebrowsGaming Рік тому +114

Sound design helps to make the second slap extremely unnerving. If you listen to the clip Teee uses here, Nami audibly gasps right before slapping Usopp. That coupled with the un-cartoonish anger appearing on her face really ups the anxiety. Most of the time when Nami rages, she's angry or irritated, sure. But here, shes *upset* and genuinely hurt by Usopp's comment.

Yeah, also fits his character and his love of freedom. He chooses the love of his own crew by burdening the horrors they witnessed on that island on himself, so that his nakama can continue to live their lives free of that horrible knowledge. His smile towards the end of the movie almost looks as though he is grateful that they forgot.

What I like about Omatsuri is that he wasn’t just some generic villain that wanted to take over the world or something. He was a broken man desperately clinging onto his lost friends and doing whatever it took to keep them alive. This honestly set him apart from some of the canon villains, since a lot of the time, they had their own goals that the Strawhats happened to get in the way of, whereas here, Omatsuri actively lured them in with the express purpose of killing them

Literally my favorite One Piece movie! I’m especially OBSESSED with the animation style; I really don’t think the horror element would have hit as hard using the normal animation style. Something about the minimalist drawings and soft colors really hits hard for the vibe of this movie.

    • @Hairo-rv9kl

Glad I not the only one that noticed it.
This movie has such an odd art style, and the backgrounds are especially unnerving imo. Some of them straight up look like real locations that were then traced over or put through a filter. The scene where the Baron unveils the "shooting" ordeal literally uses a real sheet and it's super obvious. It reinforces this feeling that something is just wrong. Like it's some kind of strange dream or hallucination. It's like a liminal space.
Actually, the whole thing has this feeling of some kind of lost media ova. Like this was something that was made during the era of underground anime films that never saw the light of day, and only existed as, sometimes disturbing, passion projects meant to be shared within small circles.

  • @EmmaBGames
    @EmmaBGames Рік тому +221

The reason the fights came about was so natural it could have happened in the actual series which made it even more disturbing; Zoro actually pushed Sanji away from him so they BOTH wouldn't get trapped TOGETHER in the same ring...but in doing so only Sanji got trapped in the ring, simultaneously making Sanji 'safe' and 'out of the way' in Zoro's eyes but also more 'in trouble' which made Sanji angry at being treated like he is the 'damsel in distress' out of the two of them again...quickly followed by Zoro saying he was in the way made Sanji furious. Zoro didn't pick up on hurting Sanji's feelings because he naturally just pushed Sanji out of the way so they both wouldn't be trapped together and make it awkward...but Sanji read it as Zoro sacrificing Sanji to the role of 'being caught' to make himself look better. Then Zoro kept pushing after the ordeal trying to make fun whilst Sanji was still angry and it made Sanji wan't to show off his skill with the Okonomiyaki; he wasn't actually looking for the girls to watch him, though it would have been a bonus for him, he was trying to prove himself to Zoro and get a pat on the back for pulling his weight and making a good dinner and a show... but Zoro just took a nap because Sanji had it handled and everyone was just hanging out waiting for dinner in his eyes. So Sanji got even more pissed that Zoro didn't even pay attention to Sanji OR the crew when he finished up dinner and noticed that almost half the crew was nowhere in sight...Zoro's job is to keep an eye on them when Sanji is busy and vice versa. So all trust just broke and Sanji told him not to eat his food; he didn't mean it...but I can tell you for a fact if the fight continued on in a normal One Piece episode they would yell at each other to go look for the others, fight the bad guys, and win, Zoro wouldn't have eaten any food at all until Sanji noticed, Sanji would have felt awful and made him his favorites or a request in return and he and Zoro would say sorry to each other and go back to normal...but this wasn't a normal episode and the crew were in real trouble.
Nami and Usopp both wound up in a boat fire, Nami got the rescue pack with cups to put out the fire and when Usopp check the other pack the pack clung onto him, turned into a glider and sent him up. Nami has abandonment issues and Usopp just up and left...which is normal...she can handle it most of the time...but he then didn't immediately come back and pick her up to take her with him and, therefore, he broke her trust and instead of apologizing made fun of her and pretended like everything was normal.
So in the end, everyone got upset and didn't have time to take a breather and recover and that was their downfall in the movie.
These fights for these reasons have indeed happened many times now and the crew work together so well now that they can keep their emotions out of their working relationships breath to breath and have learned to circle back to being upset at a different time when they can be more rational and talk it all out.

Somehow, i think in the zoro sanji conflict, zoro tried to save himself instead of trying to save sanji, and to me, it felt like zoro was selfish and willingly sacrificed sanji. Zoro is my favorite character btw.
Also, i believe that that lily carnation flower was also responsible for causing conflict among the crew mates. We see that whenever chooper and luffy punch the main body, it emits some kind of aura. Maybe that aura was surrounding the island and causing these daily minor conflicts of straw hates spiral out of control and turn big.

@@Moody.Smiruai yes your right those films are great! I guess what I meant was that these films feature returning characters and cameos, like the marine cameos in film Z and of course the red haired pirates, law and such in Red. Those are fun and do have a place in the story, I'm really just saying I miss how baron Omatsuri is very complete by itself to the point that you could watch it and really enjoy it without really being familiar with one piece. I've been able to just show non one piece fans film 6 and have them enjoy it much more than the more modern films
I'm not trying to say those new films are bad, I love them a lot, I just think that the atmosphere, imagery and almost completely new disconnected world of film 6 isn't something that has been done in the other films, but I think they still could someday. I think the movies are an opportunity to really just go wild and completely do something unique with the our favorite straw hats, really break out of what we usually see with these movies, despite how much I love the ones we get.

Me and my friend recently did a one piece movie marathon to prepare for film red
We found most of the movies to be just alright, feeling like long one piece episodes at best, but then we got to THIS movie
Immediately I was taken aback by the really interesting and completely different visuals this movie had, it was so different and unique compared to what we had seen before
Then the unsettling nature of things started to unveil, seeing the straw hats fight in such a bitter and hateful way was so unnerving, it’s something I never thought I’d see to this extent in any one piece media. Nami and ussop s fight really stood out to me, they seem like such a great pair and there’s a level of trust between them that’s unique compared to the other strawhats, so seeing them be so genuinely upset was heart wrenching.
Then the finale of this movie happened, the final act was just so visually terrifying yet amazing, I had forgotten I was watching a one piece movie entirely at that point!
This move was immediately an A tier movie for me, it left me stunned compared to the movies that came before. while I do love a good amount of the one piece movies that came after this, nothing really every compared to the rawness I felt in this movie.

The whole scene with Luffy making the mustache pirate gesture was honestly so heartwarming, and for that moment to be followed up by complete despair was CRAZY. Not to mention the subtle implication of suicide shown to us. Another thing this movie did well is it took a villain that might otherwise be a forgettable mook villain, and then gave him such an intense personal parallel with Luffy that made him a very disturbing and pitiful reflection of the part of Luffy's character that has always shone the brightest. Baron has the same love for and dependance on his friends as Luffy, and in losing them he is twisted beyond comprehension into something that by the end seems less than human. And we are also given a glimpse of that same despair being something that Luffy could possibly be capable of in some form if he lost his crew in a similar way. Though the difference seems to be that Luffy would simply give up and waste away rather than become delusional and make a sus deal with a strange lovecraftian plant monster.

One Piece and ANYTHING is a good mix. The Straw Hats playing baseball? Racing? Cooking? A slice-of-life movie? Drama? Horror? I could even see there being a “quality” ecchi part of Oda really wanted there to be. Probably some dark reason behind it all too. One Piece really is the best.😊
SO glad to see someone talk about this movie. Since it’s not available anywhere, it just doesn’t get all that much attention nowadays. I’m hoping that your video can spark some interest in it again. I’m surprised you never mentioned Mamoru Hosoda, the director. This was actually his first movie; he proceeded to follow it up with The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, Wolf Children, The Boy and the Beast, Mirai, and Belle. Pretty much everything he touches turns into a masterpiece.
But yeah, the finale for this movie still haunts my dreams. Horrifying stuff.😣

I'm pretty late here, but one of the moments that stood out the most to me was Sanji talking back, almost shouting, to Nami. Right after/before he blames Luffy for everything. Even when he is not simping for the ladies he is NEVER rude to them, and that was the cherry on top of unsettling for me

"It seems One Piece and horror are a good mix": absolutely!! This is a movie that SCREAMS One Piece somehow, it's very impressive how they did this.
It really feels like a set up to Thriller Bark, to the Summit War saga and to all the themes of the New World, especially the vibe we can find in Dressrosa and Whole Cake Island, where psychological horror can get pretty intense (Sugar, for example, is absolutely terrifying purely because she even exists).
Amazing video, I love how One Piece completely took over your brain 😂

The animation style is phenomenal too, and I think was a perfect decision as it fits the ambiance so well. Even after watching it a few times, it still makes me uneasy. Especially the animation! *chefs kiss* Like, I knew the series was goofy but still very serious and multifaceted, but this was different! Having gotten into and almost caught up to One Piece this year, I really want to see all the movies, I've seen a few already and seeing RED tonight, but especially a rewatch of this!

There has never been a masterpiece like Movie 6 but i truly hope there will be another!!
This movie, after ending, left me in pure dread. The what ifs started spiralling in my head. Like...what if this was the actual dynamic of the crew in a canon arc. What kinda implications would that carry. Knowing Sanji disrespected and distrusted his captain while also denying food to someone from his own crew. Knowing Nami actually held a grudge against someone who is her other half/sibling/partner in crime on the crew. Knowing Zoro lost, not only himself but the entire crew. Knowing Luffy Almost, wasn't able to save Everyone. Like damn!!
After its ending i was almost like ive never felt before. I wanted more tho. Like i hate seeing my strawhats get hurt but i wanted more. I want more of the dark timeline kinda stories. oda has even drawn the dark timeline strawhats. any good writer has the perfect template. And with the story like one piece, its highly likely people would watch that!!

Apparently the director worked at studio Ghibli for a while and was going to direct Howl's Moving Castle. But ended up not, and later left due to "creative differences". I just think it's very funny and cool that the main villain is based off a crotchety old man XD

They enjoyed it enough to still “quote” it at me when I wear a hat. I really wish we could have the older movies released over here. It’d be the first anime movie I’d pay dvd release day price for. I think if someone asked me if i had seen this movie i wouldn't react in a "oh... that one.." type of way.
I think i'd be more excited because this is a genuinely fascinating little movie and take on the one piece formula, and
i rarely get to talk to anyone about it if ever. One Piece has never shied-away from disturbing themes, this movie simply took it and ran with it in a beautiful way.
The testing of friendships between the crew was a really good touch plotwise and it's extremely tragic and heartbreaking to see them at each other's throats so quickly
after knowing each other for a decent amount of time even at that point, prior to the timeskip, and even to Ussop's sentimental woes with the going merry on water 7.
But we all know how that goes and it's canon, so a movie about the breaking of friendships isn't completely implausible i suppose, at least for Ussop.
The arrow gimmick at the end seems both ridiculous, and yet extremely haunting and interesting at the same time.
The idea the baron uses his very own despair and misery as a weapon, is an amazing addition and the imagery is incredible on that scene, with
how the lighting and shading is and how dead Luffy looks as he's struck with his trillionth (morbillionth even) arrow.
It's an incredibly depressing story and even though the baron is completely in the wrong i still find myself feeling for him and his situation, however
psychotic from his trauma, loneliness, and influence from the lily incarnation he may be.
However, that won't stop me from enjoying his further downfall for all the suffering he caused others as Luffy punches and kicks his smug teeth out!

  • @TheRoomforImprovement
    @TheRoomforImprovement Рік тому +4

It's worth noting that Luffy punched the Baron the exact sameway he punched the Celestial Douchebag on Sabaody. He was THAT big of a problem.

When Luffy was fighting the boss of this movie he watched all of his friends disappear one after another and it breaks him, until he was told his friends are still alive and that he can save them.
This movie came out before the defeat of the strawhats at sabaody archipelago.
So if this movie was made canon luffy would have watched his friends die twice.

I spent an hour of my time tracking down a digital copy of this movie and god was it worth it. The animation style was perfect for this genre. It was like the Strawhats were the Strawhats, but not quite. Zoro looked off, Luffy felt stiff, Sanji just was slightly off kilter from his normal, softer character design. I don't think the psychological aspect of the film would've pulled through if the style was the same as the anime.
Honestly Zoro and Sanji's fight scene is what drove home the point that something wasn't right. It absolutely killed me to watch it all happen.
Absolutely horrific to watch my comfort characters go through that. I would definitely do it again. Thanks for the wonderful essay!

Alright, well, watched the movie, watched the video. That was, like, the most Mamoru Hosoda a One Piece movie could possibly get, lol. I remember after seeing trailers for Summer Wars (and instantly recognizing the Digimon influence) trying to check out as much of his stuff as possible, but I couldn't find this movie at the time. Was finally able to check it off my list after almost 15 years. Loved that you could just feel Hosoda's fingerprints all over it - think I might have been too busy geeking out to fully embrace the horror aspects, but I was never a horror fan so that's probably for the best, lol. I appreciate this video for reminding me of its existence! Glad I got to finally see it and that it's being appreciated years later!

This movie worked because it directly attacked the core of One Piece.
One Piece has sad and traumatic back stories and story arcs, but that pain and trauma is muted even healed by dynamics and relationships of everyone.
Imagine the horror story that could be built if the entire crew was suddenly overcome by their past trauma and pain...probably worse than this movie.

Regarding the ending and Luffy being fine, I think its totally normal for him. As long as his family is safe after it all, he moves on because whatever was endangering them is either punched in the face really hard or gone. And since they dont remember a rather traumatizing moment that would make Luffy happier because he knows that would get to his family.

Twist some plot like instead pirates, it can be stranded people/tourists/sailors/detouring route riders etc. Giving hallucination on the characters from a small to big moments then suck them dry.
