    1) I'm very happy to learn that there's a whole formal vocabulary for what my friends and I call "disposable self defense," I will definitely check out this particular piece of "kitchen" ware.
    2) I second the Tim Larkin recommendation. I paid absurd money to train with him in the 90s, and became a seminar junkie as a result, but none of the martial arts training I've paid for even comes close to what and how he teaches, even adjusting for cost. Being able to get his materials in inexpensive digital form is such a blessing!

We now have a drawer full of the knives. I never trained with Tim, but very much appreciate his videos and When Violence is the Answer.

Mora knives are just slightly more money and so much better. In my opinion. Good video!

I wonder if Ed Calderon did any carcass testing with a Mora.

I have the Cold Steel Roach Belly. It was $16 on Amazon. I had to touch up the edge but for its price is a good little work knife and there’s nothing stopping it from being used “tactically” if the situation called for it.

I have a knife about that size and shape my friend made for me. He installed some beautiful mesquite grips. I carry it in a homemade horizontal leather sheath on my belt. I work with the knife so it has an all purpose life. I live on a ranch in South Texas, 60 miles from Mexico. I have a few cows, a bunch of goats, and more than my share of illegals crossing the ranch, leaving trash, breaking into things, and generally, making me sleep with one eye open. My point is, if I am dressed I have a knife on the belt and a handgun. If I get in the truck, an AR comes along for the ride.
Keeping a knife on you is always key. In a grappling situation, it might save your life. It is good to know about the knife you mentioned. People have asked me how they get one like I have. My friend is not in the knife business. He makes knives for therapy, fun, relaxation. He got good over time after making all sorts of mistakes and learning forging. He is a CPA and hates it but it pays the bills. That is whole different topic. However, he made this knife for me because we were good friends when I was active duty in the Army. Shared hardships tend to forge lifelong relationships.
I think I will mention your Pioneer Woman knife to folks who ask me knife questions. I like a 5" blade, not too wide like a skinning knife, not too thick. Also, 5" gives a decent penetration depth to do the defensive work properly. Good channel. I need to watch more.

I can be sympathetic to those escaping oppression. Sympathy goes out the window when they shit all over their refuge. Bummer about the border.

I've been using paring knifes and wood carvers for EDC for a while now. It's all you really need in a pinch. You can peel an orange, open a package, or slice a steak with the razor edge. Two and half to three inches of razor sharp utility blade just gets the job done.
These look sturdy, maybe even overkill. The Scots had a little thing called a 'dirk'. Three inches of stiletto steel stuffed down a sock or boot top that probably caused more mayhem than any sword of the day. Small is good. I really don't understand the 'murican obsession with size. "Survival" knifes are for... well wilderness actual survival stuff, if you really want to practice for the zombie epoxylips. "Combat" knifes are stuck on the end of an assault rifle these days and really have very little use even there.
For context, I'm a knife guy. I've made my own knifes, mostly boners/skinners, but I see no point carrying something a foot long and 3/8" thick. The steel is probably crap anyway - most of that stuff is junk, and the average 'prepper' doesn't know the difference.

Do u have one of these Pioneer Woman paring knives? As a knife maker, your feedback would be of interest.

      @@AmbGun Sorry no I don't. Different country.
If it's like most kitchen knifes though, it's more likely to bend than break, and will take a keen edge easily and keep it if you give it some attention often. You see, most kitchen knifes are not tool steel, unless you pay a lot of money for them. I have some of those too and they do keep an edge longer than the cheaper stuff.
Likely it has a fairly obtuse edge on it, which I'd take down to about 25 or 30 degrees. I'd call it suitable for purpose and the design and manufacture appears to be above par. I like that the bolster has been taken out to the width of the handle for strength and the three rivets holding the scales on the full tang appear to be substantial. Great value for the price.
I have lots of knifes, but by far the most useful blades are a paring knife in the glove box and a little carver in the pocket. They are very cheap and get the job done. The best knife is the one you have with you, and something pocket sized that you don't have to worry about losing or breaking is what you are more likely to have when you need it.

Better performance than similar knives costing as much as $800? No, just no. One, it doesn't have a lower guard (or even a large forward finger cut-out to act as one). Biggest reason right there. In fact, the design of it looks very likely to cause your hand or your thumb to ride up _onto_ the cutting edge of the knife if used to quickly penetrate someone with the blade. Which is not a criticism of the knife, considering what it was designed for. Namely, food prep.
Second, outperforms $800 knives?? I have quite a few fixed blade knives about the size of The Pionner Woman Paring knife. All under $200 that can easily outperform it. Off the top of my head, my TOPS Knives C.A.T. model. And, the Condor Tool & Knife Credo (just over $80, not $800). Also, as someone trained in knife combatives, using a knife for self-defense is a poor idea. Won't go into all of the reasons why. Folks can do their own research. Lastly, there are covert S.D. tools that can be carried into non-permissive nations. The effective ones don't have a blade, and don't resemble a knife. Got two in particular I like. Sorry, won't be revealing those on the internet for everyone to find out about them.

Yeah, I with you. I think Ed Calderon may have said "better than some"...or maybe he meant 800 pesos. I wonder what knives he did the pig carcass testing with.
Lack of guard is why I figured that some added grippy stuff on the handle would be important for when the hands are bloody.
Knife for SD does have a pretty solid psychological effect for deterrence. While I now have quite a few Pioneer Woman paring knives in my kitchen, I never carry one. The only knife I carry is in my multi-tool, so not exactly a primo SD tool.
Curious about your two options. For non-firearm or non-mace solutions. I kind of think of simple blunt force instruments like a baseball bat or tire thumper.

      Agree.
But case of my country, can't get any guns(including Illegal) and knife that people think 'illegal purpose' also hard to buy
So they buy kitchen knife for sashimi and tape whole blade except 3~4 inches from the tip and it works not bad for use stab suddenly
Unfortunately I'm just collector so hard to collect badass style knives cause many guys doing this sht :(
In my opinion the Best option of self defense knife is LEGAL trustable sharpness and good for carry
      Sorry for my bad English.
      Have a good day😊

I think it's an overhyped blade it's not bad but it's not great. It's not an expensive blade that you'd regret losing, but neither are most moras.
I think if you compare it to a bunch of tacticool mall ninja knives then this knife is probably better but it's not going to replace my edc blade by any means.
