    I realised (thanks for the response on the other video) that I completely forgot to thank you.
    Followed all of your instructions last Sunday. I had some instructions on the recipe (I bought a kit that was on sale as it was cheaper than buying the bits individually), but I couldn't follow them, because they made an assumption that I was going to mash and sparge on a hob before transferring to a boiler. Whereas this does everything in one place.
    I do have some feedback around timings (I had no idea how long this might all take).
    Started around 11:30am with water left in a tapped fermenter overnight for chlorine to drop out. Double checked the video and instructions.
    Heated the water. This took quite a long time - in future, I might blast it on the 3kw setting to get it up to 67c quicker.
    Around 12:30pm started putting the grain in. Took around 20 minutes (need to buy a better spoon - "kit" spoons don't really like being warmed that much and bend too easily). Then another 10-15 minutes to bring it back up to temperature before sparing for an hour.
    Just after 2pm, added the extra water to take it up to 23L and set at 3kw to boil. When you said about watching it on 3kw setting, you REALLY REALLY do! It was going up slowly, 1 degree at a time. Seemed to be taking ages, so I was browsing Facebook. Suddenly from nowhere, it started boiling all over the place. Quickly flipped the 3kw setting off and started timing. Again, as an FYI, it doesn't like boiling on the 1.5kw setting - it struggled to get to 102c. I read elsewhere that you should leave it on 3kw, but set the boil to 98c - this will keep a rolling boil (dunno why but it worked).
    I think it was around 2:30pm by the time I got it started properly. FInished the boil at 3:30pm, all the time following the instructions on when to add hops and so on.
    At this point, I put the chiller coil in and started the water. I'll be honest, I had no expectation, but it had me down to 30c within about 35 minutes. By the time I transferred it to the fermenting bucket, it was 24c which was bang in the middle of my yeast's recommended pitching temp. By the time that was all finished, it was around 4:10. Quick tidy and off to the pub.
    Sadly, as this is a DIPA, it'll be some time (21 days) before I can tell you if it's any good!
    TL:DR? Took just short of 5 hours. Give yourself 6 if you're new and cleaning up (mopping up) time.

      Thanks for such a great description of your brewday. We have it down to about 4hrs minimum. It has been known for its too start at around 7.30pm and not finish until 2 in the morning! That includes filming, beer and generally having a good old chit chat.
      It does get quicker and less stressful when you get to know your kettle better.
      To boil we set our klarstein to 102 degrees on the 1.5kw setting. 3kw to get up to boil.
      Let us know how the beer turns out. Good luck 🍻

    Thanks for this, I couldn't make sense of the instructions and the delayed start function is what I was looking at. I have attached a small recirculation pump for both circulating the wort through the grain bed as it mashes, and also for transferring to my fermenter after the boil, makes the whole thing pretty effortless, a good upgrade for the ~£20 it cost.

    Very good. I bought a Klarstein Maischfest about 9 months ago and have done about 8 brews to date. The instructions for setting the clock that came with it were gobbledygook and whilst I worked out how to set the temperature, I had never worked out the clock bit. Thanks for that! One thing I have done is to set up a small block & pulley system in my garage to lift the grain basket as if you do a strong brew with 6 or 7 kilos of grain it is very heavy to lift up the wet grain for draining & sparging. A great bit of kit for the money.

    Cheers for the video. Good tips about the delayed start.. I will definitely use that. Just had my first brew with the klarstein. It was eh.. interesting. For some reason I used 22 litres of water for the mash. I think this helped to get some grain down out of the basket and it eventually clogged the tap, it was fun unblocking it. Also I think the grain crush was too fine ( 1.2mm approx ) Hopefully the next brew will be smoother, but I'm hoping this brew will turn out well.

    • @TheGingerBrewers
      @TheGingerBrewers  2 роки тому

      Yep, a depending on your grain bill 17 should probably be your max. When I had a block tap I found it cleared after i raised the basket only a couple of centimetres up and down about 30 times with the tap open - maybe worth a try next time.
      Honestly, every brew we do gets easier but with a different challenge to overcome. You'll notice overtime your brews get better and better in clarity and taste. Also the brew day and bottle day time will become less and less.
      Good luck with your next brew... 🍻

    Thanks

    • @TheGingerBrewers
      @TheGingerBrewers  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Fig bird, thanks for commenting. The biggest piece of advice I can give is that brewing gets easier with practice. As to your specifics;
      1. This depends on where you are going to fit it. We have three different methods. The first is a large gizmo from hoselock that allows you to fit the pipe onto a normal tap. The second is a regular screw connection that fits on an outside tap, incidentally you can also fit this onto a dishwasher supply (which is what I use when brewing inside at my place) or washing machine supply. And the third is a quick release garden hose fitting.
      2. You need to do at least 4 re-circulations then the grain bed effectively acts as a filtration bed. Also in the beginning of the mash only stir the top half but, after about 20/30 minutes don't stir it again. Be careful when you add your grains not to spill any down the side. Don't worry too much as any left should fall out duting fermentation.
      Nice to have you on board Birdy, enjoy your brewing 🍻😉👍
      PS What are you brewing next?

    • @TheGingerBrewers
      @TheGingerBrewers  2 роки тому

      Hi Joe, a bag for the grains? No just use the supplied basket. If you recirculate during the mash and only stir the top 3rd (if you stir at all) then the grain acts as your filtration bed. Any remaining bits drop out during fermentation. Nice to have you on board! Cheers 🍻🍻🍻🍻 PS Like anything you get better with practice....

      Hi, a couple of people have asked this and TBH you can ferment in anything as long as you can keep bad bugs out. However, I wouldn't recommend fermenting in the boil kettle. Hi Marco, as far as I can see the main difference is the pro has more control over the mash process but it is also has the controller and pump mounted externally so potentially takes more room. If you have the extra £90 lying around I'd go for the pro but don't forget it's the skill of the brewer that makes the best beer.
      Neither has a viewing window which is very handy when looking at the sparge process, although not necessary as you can calculate this amount. I can't see a wort chiller/ cooling coil either... This is a must. We will be upscalling to a chiller plate.

    Hello, I'm speaking to you from Spain, I had a bad brewing day a while ago, it was a Weizenbock. I have the same Klarstein Maischfest brew kettle, and during the mashing the flour or very small parts of the malt stuck to the bottom and burned. I got an indicator on the display that I should empty the kettle and lost that brew.
    I don't know if this has ever happened to you, but I would like to know if you have any recommendations on how to prevent it from happening again. I don't know if I failed to stir well, or not to grind the grain too much (I have an idea, which I don't know if it is correct, that dark malts release more fine particles when ground, and putting them in the bucket with the standard perforated filter that comes with the pot was not enough, I don't know for sure). Because I have looked for double bottoms but it is difficult and expensive to find.
    Anyway, I really like the videos you upload, and this one has helped me to know how to use the screen hahaha, thanks for everything, greetings and good beer!

      As to the burning on the bottom it can occur, mainly when you brew using added sugar. Honestly don't worry about it, a top tip for cleaning it is to either use a bit of elbow grease or what I do is use your sterilisation fluid from when you sterilise your fermenter. Clean the kettle as best you can and leave the cleaning fluid over night and in the morning you can just swill off the burn mark with ease.

      Hi, plenty of re circulations. Maybe go for a little lower temp originally, say 65ish, 68 does seem high and no room for over heating. Leaving the lid off to help get the temp down. Stirring the mash (top 3rd only) if temp refuses to come down. At 75 degrees the chemical processes are doing different things than you want so avoid this temp at all costs within the first 50 minutes or so.

    When sparging can you not just use the tap and a jug?

      Hi there, yes you can. We have done this when we are in a hurry but you generally want warm water about 60 degrees. If you can get that from your tap then go for it!

      @@TheGingerBrewers Hi, I think you misunderstand my question, I mean from the Klarstein boiler tap directly into the grain basket.
      There are systems out there that use a pump from the boiler to the lid so its a full loop so I was unsure as to why you are using fresh water, the boiler should be the correct temp I believe?

      @@SatiVaMov Ah sorry, yes misunderstood.
      We top up with fresh water to wash out the remaining sugar. What you are talking about(I think) is vorlouf or recirciculation during the mash and not sparging.
      Am I right?????

      Sorry buddy, brewers not electricians. If I attempted to answer that one I'd worry for your safety. Great piece of kit though - I hope you get it sorted. 🍻

    Will it make 40 pints

    • @TheGingerBrewers
      @TheGingerBrewers  2 роки тому +1

      25 litres will boil down to 23 then you'll probably loose about 2 pints to the trub. Giving a max of about 38 drinkable pints. But you can always brew stronger and add water to your fermenter giving up to 50 pints or more. Hope this helps... 🍻

    The best water in the world. Give it a few hours for the chlorine and flourid to settle. Stupidly all over the world. How about filtering the water first via using steam, and your water will be the best in any country. Dumb dumb.
