To have a head on collision in the middle of nowhere is absolutely insane . This is like crashing on a empty highway . How is this even possible . I can understand someone being rear ended due to low visibility and dust , but a head on collision is just stupidity from the driver . This world is getting dumber by the day 😢 its sad someone lost there life due to absolute ignorance.
Our team was rolling to the starting line with our race car when this crash occurred. Loud speakers & radio broadcasts announce the next car up on the line. The "Turbinator" (450 +MPH) was spooling up and the guys in the pickup steered toward the race course to get a better view, directly into the path of the Toyota Van. Its really that simple, and very sad.
I was the first person on the accident scene , wonder how the older couple are doing ? I tried to keep them awake until medicals showed up. It was an awful accident.

Was supposed to be there this weekend, but was unable to make it. I’m sorry for anyone who is injured or lost their life and unfortunately, the news will portray this in a certain light that doesn’t reflect the true nature and the wonderful bonding that goes on at these events and how well everyone behaves I hope this doesn’t start some kind of nonsense with the public
Both cars were spectators from out of state. 73 year old driver of the pickup, 74 year old driver of minivan. Though there were no witnesses other than the occupants, it seems likely that the 9am sun reflecting off the salt would create a difficult driving situation given the glare off the salt and possibly a dirty windshield and improper sun glasses.
This is the kind of thing that happens when drivers have their heads up their asses instead of paying attention which is called Situational Awareness. When you are talking or playing with your phone or whatever, you are not paying attention to your driving.
exactly then you make a move without looking? and if the other drivers does not have cat like reflexes and vision .. horrible, I had a woman pull out in front of me as I was going thru a green light, her light was red, and she PINNED it, brad new luxury car, i was hardly able to get on the brakes much less steer, my mid 80's truck totaled the car, pushed her engine into the cab, pushed her back about 20ft.. I drove home, radiator sprung a leak.. just dunno how she didn't see me, I was below speed limit . . . baffles, foreigner tho, baby in back of her car in baby seat crying the entire time, musta been trauma for the poor thing . . I dislike crashes a lot, racing or otherwise .. go easy man
Perhaps this is more like the result of Social Media Awareness. The result of spending more time sitting around on the internet than paying attention to what is going on around them in the real world.
have you never seen a midair collision involving 2 planes? distance and approach angle is hard to judge out on the salt. plus I think the guy in the truck had been drinking.
Obviously there is a way but the point of impact on the two vehicles doesn't make sense - Drivers side/front on the mini van and passenger side/front on the truck?
Were both of these vehicles working as crew for racers that were on the course at the time? If not, they are essentially spectators and should be behind the line and not on the access road at all. Course marshals are there to enforce that, but they can't be everywhere. Now, because of some idiot(s), they'll tighten regs and make it worse for everyone else.
A single cab pick up with 4 people in it. And look at the way that the steering column is pointing towards the passenger side. That means no belts used. So that could be blood and brains from multiple peoples heads blasting into the windshield

No, it only takes ONE fool to steer into your lane in a situation where you have no reaction time, or inertia of your vehicle is just too much and you simply can't miss. Jerk the wheel on a tall van like that to get out of the way of the truck and you don't get much action, it just begins to fall over which makes it impossible to steer.
It's literally an open space for miles, the stupidity displayed here by there idiots is astounding, there should be laws against being so stupid, no excuses for this.
bombay, the media is showing reverse images of the truck damage? the first image at 1:11 the damage is on the drivers side, or appears to be, that image appears to be reversed? steering wheel? the other images or stills damage is on the passenger side? why would they do this? at 1:25 they show both vehicles, van has damage on drivers, truck on passenger side .. yes this doesn't add up to a head on does it? me thinks the truck turned left in front of the van and got it the turned perpendicular to on coming van, van swerved the same direction the truck was traveling then clipped its front quarter, spun around?
So many ignorant and judgemental remarks made by more then a few people. Look what our society has turned into. A person made a mistake, a mistake, have any of of you judgey jerks ever made one? Looks like you havent by your remarks. RIP to the person who died. I hope everyone else involved healed up fine.
A fatal mistake is on its own level, accidents are always somebody fault, and likely was due to somebody's negligence. It may sound harsh but yes it was a direct result of somebody's actions that a person was killed due to a mistake that could have been avoided.
You mean too tell me , all that space and they still ran into each other ?? But then again way back in history the only two cars in a state crashed into each other 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
it only takes one driver not paying attention or losing focus, both of them? my best guess, it was so early, and with so few people on that road his instinct said 1 in 350 million chance, our subconscious is making choices for us all the time, specially in relaxed places like this, sadly the truck blends with the background too, the van may have blended with a dark mountain?

They need to upgrade the rules. The problem is the same thing you get when Skiing. Snow Blindness. Everything disappears. They need to put Flashing RED strobe lights on top of all the vehicles in the track area. Easy fix.
Old drivers do weird stuff like turn in front of on coming traffic. Just drive defensively n hope your on your awareness game to avoid such moments. Old drivers are everywhere in America n some don’t realize they lost a step n slipping mentally.

The ground is made up of salt, it once was a big salt water lake. That has dried up. The salt is what remains of it. I am very poor on the Earths timeline, but maybe from the last great Ice Age. Like 10.000 to 100.000 years ago? Give or take a couple years... People from America or US probably knows when it started drying up, probably after the end of the ice age I would guess, but I am really poor on Earths timeline, Ice Ages and general "happenings"..
welp, being on the softer loose salt the damage is minimized some apposed to asphalt thank God, and it doesn't appear to be perfectly head on, quarter to quarter, allows the vehciles to spin away form one another as well.. so sad in any event . ... diminished grip the strength of impact isn't as great, both vehicles can easily slip on salt.. its slightly lesser compound compression, and less is more in crashes, condolences to friends and family, RIP . .

Think about this. The first car crash on record happened in Clevland Ohio. (I forgot the year.) But there were only 2 cars in the whole state.
If I remember correctly, the first two car collision in the US happened in Ohio. There were two cars in the state.
