A Vallejo VJ77720 32 Metal Color Gunmetal Grey I've used for my Iron Hands. The Vallejo Metal Colour range is bloody fantastic for painting on. Even goes on smoothly with no primer.
I cant thank you enough for this simple how to video, got my order of paints today and painted one already and im loving this rough iron theme for my iron hands!
I love this process, more-so than the CoP version. Granted, its missing that weird purple/green tinge, but i think i can swing that with diluted contrast paints. Thank you!
I've been trying for ages to think of how to paint sisters of battle from order of the valorous heart effectively since they've got black armor and black robes. I think painting the armor like this with robes painted in a more traditional scheme would be fantastic, thanks for the inspiration.
That is a great looking scheme! Black looks simple, until you really get into it and then the question of painting models black becomes: but what kind of black? I got another fun way of painting the black of the Iron Hands. It's nowhere near as fast as this is, but it look cool. My way is: paint the whole thing in Iron Warriors (or that Vallejo black metal). Then you give the whole model a coat of Black Templars contrast. What you get there is a super dark metallic as the contrast will tint the already near black metal to full on black, but keeps the metallic effect. After that you can do all your highlights to the armour, take it as far as you want. After that is where the real fun begins. Take one of the darker contrast colours. Leviadon Blue or Dark Angels Green are both great choices and thin it down with a lot of contrast medium (I went 3 or 4 parts of medium to one part of paint) so you get a glaze. Thinly apply that over all the black armour and it will tint it just a smidge towards that colour. It's really subtle, but it just looks awesome. Like I said: it's a lot more work, but I think it's worth it for a character.
Definitely something I'd put aside for characters or maybe even Ferrus Manus - a little blue hint to that armour would work super well - but I can imagine that'd look stunning!
@@SonicSledgehammerStudio I've done it with a hint of green. I did all the Heresy legions as a challenge to myself a while ago. The Iron Hands and the Alpha Legion ones are probably the ones that I'm most proud of.
Love it. I still have some AoBR Space Marines waiting for a new colour scheme (started with my own chapter, but wasn't too happy with that) and a little tweaking (metallic hands and switching up the colour of the olter) would make this scheme appropriate for "modern" Iron Hands. As always, great job! I love how casual you are with these tutorials and you always sound like you are genuinely just having fun and hobbying while shooting those videos :)
Would love to see a mini series of this for other space marines with black armor like raven guard. I would also love to see you paint other legions traditionally seen as boring like Ultras painted up in the "interesting" style.
I think this is genuinely one of the best Iron Hands tutorials on youtube. Black looks hard to do, but they aren’t totally black as you’ve shown. They have a strong undertone of metallic elements and other colours can be added to make that pop out. I’d personally add some wash patches of purple and green to match the FW style, but this looks excellent all on its own. Edit: where did you get the mk2 marine btw?
I really like the Forge World appearance for them, but it feels like the patina effect would be a little extra work I wouldn't push myself to finish on a whole army. There for someone braver than I am to do, though. 😂 The MkII armour is 'out there,' which is about as much as I can say except to suggest Cults3D or CGTrader as a place to start looking.
This was an excellent one. It is not quite easy to get a mk6 to look nice (lack of details!) but the black metal on the bottom really did make this a great one to follow! :)
It's great stuff. You do need to let it sit a little while before shading it because sometimes, if it's not completely dried, you'll lift some of the metallic flakes from the top surface. Frustrating if you end up putting a brush full of that back in your pot! 😅 But same as with anything, really, waiting for it to dry.
Thanks, @@SonicSledgehammerStudio , that is a very worthwhile tip. 👍 I will try to allow for that. (After enamel metallics that seemed to have drying times measured in decades I’m always a bit nervous of the metal stuff 😀.)
Used the Vallejo Air paint mentioned in the video, it sadly came out very sparkly and not as smooth and black as in the video. I shook it vigorously and put it on my vortexer, but still. Probably fucking it up somehow.
I doubt it! Even the video shows it quite sparkly before you get a shade and varnish on there. The next steps will always make a difference; it's not finished until it's finished.
Aside from the black metal recipe you used for the Stormcast, are there any other comparable metallic paints to the Vallejo Air one you used? I’m having a heck of a time finding it!
Awesome Video on how to paint black! But honestly, no soldier is going to have rust on his weapon. Your weapon is all that keeps you alive. It gets maintained before you eat or sleep. True a 10000 yrs ago, and will be True 10000 to the future! Cheers 🍻
Oh, don't worry - I'm with you on that one! Still, these grimy boys of the future are always shown to have grime and rust on their guns, so even if it pains me, I'll lean into the aesthetic of the goofy millennium... 🤣
Eh! They're alright. Good at the price, they just don't seem terribly different to a very pigmented wash. They do dry much more subtly than a typical thinned paint wash would, but if you've already got Skrag Brown or similar it's really much of a much.
Man, I REALLY like that paint job. It's settled, if I ever field a marine force it will be these guys with this exact paint job. I may just paint up two to use as power armored troops for a Reclaimer warband in This Is Not A Test. Maybe give them a medieval, post-apocalyptic style since these guys remind me of over the top steampunk troopers.
I came here for the chippy dabs
Can't be painting Space Marines without the chippy dabs!
Ferrus would be proud, fantastic work
Thank you , Troy .

Thanks so much for posting this video! Really helped with my new HH Iron Hands army! Loved the way they came out!

This is awesome. He has one of my favorite helmets on.
Yup, this is how I'll be painting my Makers Cult Decobots for Stargrave, thank you for an extremely helpful tutorial!!!
Definitely gonna use this for any black armor in the future
They say history is cyclical, I first came to your channel with your Iron hands vid, now here we are, still actively enjoying and each your vids dude!
History doesn't repeat, but it sure does rhyme! 😂
Love it, thanks so much for doing an IH scheme. Will be trying this for sure!
Looking good

The iron hands look the business with the MK II armor, excellent job. Correction on the armor mk
But this is MKII Crusade Pattern though.
@@simonnick8422 *This
@@simonnick8422 wait it is?! Edit oh your right. It’s not fully armored
@@trainboy1739 I hope we get plastic MKII soon. It is my favourite, partly due to that visor instead of regular “eyes”.

Switching out a couple paints this could also work well for black templars thank ya mate
These are some great ideas for paint black! Thanks for sharing them.
Looks great! Could you share where you got this model from?
I really like how this looks, only thing I'm going to skip is the rust. 👌

From iron comes strength. Also try too find a 3D print of these guys from the Dornian Heresy where they are all necroned out !
Wow, might have to redo the squad I began to paint like this. That Vallejo paint looks very good, the techniques help a lot as well!

Looks great 👍& incredibly helpful as always. Hopefully GW will release a mkii plastic kit soon.
That would be cool! For MkII supposedly being the mainstay of most Legions during the Crusade, it'd be nice to see more of them on the table.
looks soooo cool!

Much bigger fan of these (relatively) wee marines than the scale creep going on with the current fellas
This method could be used for painting late middle ages/early renaissance armours, generally they painted cuirasses black to avoid rust.

Thanks, just got too worried after repainting minis I allready basecoated I guess.
Love your marines, always leave me inspired. Would you ever paint a 40k emperors children? Would love to see how you tackle that hot pink 🎆
Best iron hands tutorial I've seen so far. When you paint the rust do you only paint in the recesses or do you paint on the panels aswell?
Cheers! Definitely paint some of the rust gunk up on the panels in some areas, especially at any edges where you've added chipped highlights.
@@SonicSledgehammerStudio for these iron hands any clue where you bought the helmets from?

I'm curious what you would get if you did a zenithal with the black metallic over a black base coat/primer coat

How would you translate this over to a tank or dread, sonic?

Hey Troy. Question : How long do you wait to pop him on a base ,after hitting him with a Matt varnish? Great work as always by the way.👍🏽☢️👏
A couple minutes? It doesn't take long for most varnishes to dry.
@@SonicSledgehammerStudio thanks for the quick reply. Love you’re content!!😁👍🏽
Are you using the new, reformulated shades, or the older versions?
These are the old shades. I've stocked up on these as much as possible since they do exactly what I want.
