Something I really appreciate about your tutorial is you didn't change the colour. You didn't make a dark blue marine with Iron Hands iconography. You didn't highlight with blue to make it, again, look like a blue marine with Iron Hands iconography. You made a marine, done up in black, with some weathering. You made an Iron Hands marine. Thank you.
Beautiful! Going to be really helpful to paint my 2500 point army! Seen alot of guides that I didn't fancy and where to complicated, this will be a very good scheme and looks pretty easy to do as this is my break army from my endless Tyranid swarms with mountains of production line like painting left too do! Take care mate
I'm new to painting marines and have chosen iron hands as my first army. Your tutorial is great and I'll be using this technique, thanks! Models look great and I've subscribed
Been into 40k for a little while now, but recently REALLY got into it to where now Im collecting minis and starting an Iron Hands collection so this came as a huge help. I appreciate it because this was exactly how Im trying to do this, so thank you
This is awesome! Just started with Warhammer and there isn't many Iron Hands examples to make black armor look good so this is a lifesaver. Will return to watch this again.
Great video. Smashing out my iron hands using this technique. I found that an abaddon black glaze works better at smoothing out the dry brush over the nuln oil and gives an overall nicer finish 👍
Please show us how you do your Iron Hands vehicles. Want to see how this works on large models, flatter spaces etc. Brilliant fast technique on this marine, looks great. Thank you 👍🏻😃
Truthfully, I liked it better pre-varnish, when it really leant the impression that this was a suit that wasn't used for parading, it was used for fighting a war and maintained by people who largely only cared about making sure it worked. Really did a lot to separate it from your deathwatch or black templars. Still, really informative video, thanks for putting it out!
The Flesh is Weak brother! I spent a lot of time on my Iron Hands (16colors) but I would have no problem if I seen this on the table. It looks great, kinda wish I watch this before doing my colors. Would have saved me soooooo much time.
You're a braver man than I! Years back when I first started with Iron Hands I picked them purely because they'd be easiest to paint, but they grew on me for ages. ;D
Brass on the bolter would break up a bit of the monotony (or more accurately, monochrome) but as far as "getting it done, model on the table", then yes, works nicely. I've had pretty bad luck with varnishes (don't use 'em any more) but that one really makes the armor pop.
Briefly tried a much more difficult paint guide, realized oh God I can't handle it lol. Also love how the edging is just dry brushing. I love painting but man if it started to take too long I can't take it lol. I'm gonna do this instead kf what I was trying. Looks almost as good and 80% less pain lol.
Really loving these. I was looking to paint PH Iron Hands, but I don't like the bright version that GW is doing now. What do you suppose the combo of combing this and the black steel stormcasts? Basing the armor in Black/Leadbelcher, drybrush necon, wash with nuln oil? How well would it work on tanks, dreads, etc... Not sure on Contrast, since they're difficult on tanks.
Should work pretty well, honestly. Especially the black/Leadbelcher mix over bigger areas, that should look nice and dark but still have a bit of visual interest at table distance.
I think it'd work pretty well! It introduces just enough contrast and shine to the armour that once you knock it back with a shade, it's clearly not 'just black.'
I'm wondering if 6 years later Medusan Immortals would be possible, with the more modern paints we have now (Contrast, Speed Paints, 2thincoats, et all). I heard the trick is using "Tamiya Clears" which are apparently a form of high end glazes, associated mostly with Gundam (gunpla) models.
I really liked this look on my test marine. Would you say this is transfer-friendly or will the solvents involved with transfers mess up the look of the pauldrons? Thanks for the guide.
You shouldn't have any problems with applying a transfer to this. If you're worried, a little splash of varnish on the shoulder pad first will be enough to seal it, then you can hit the whole miniature with a matt sealer.
Do you think this technique would be appropriate for Deathwatch? I’m new to miniature painting and the techniques in this video feel very approachable to me. Any tips for the Deathwatch shoulder pauldron? Maybe just Leadbelcher and Nuln Oil?
That'd do it! There's a few ways of going about black, but this is probably one of the fastest I can think of. The silver pauldron would work well with just any old silver and Nuln Oil, definitely.
I've been thrashing Battlescribe for a little while, trying to figure out what I can assemble and stick to the Iron Hands theme that'll still hit 2000pts, so... ...yeah, give it a month, I guess? XD
Thanks been looking for a simple iron hands scheme, just sold all of my space wolves to go full primaris with iron hands, only different i might do is blue eyes and red purity seals
The tutorial that forgeworld gave me for 30k Iron Hands was Base: Leadbelcher Shade: 3 coats of nuln oil Detail: Paint shoulder trim and other details with stormhost silver Shade: Final coat of nuln oil over entire model.
I'm a bit late but I have a question : Can you drybrush the model with Leadbelcher instead of Necron Compound ? I really love the effect, but I don't have a lot of paints Great video, best Iron Hands I've seen in my short painter life
I wonder if sponging or drybrushing might be a way to duplicate the FW Medusan Immortals scheme, that's the only thing I could think of short of airbrushing.
Like a boss! Nice... I was looking for a nice and easy way to paint some black armour and this helps a lot. do you have any video's on painting black leather?
In actual fact, I've got plans on a leather video in the pipe. Someone asked a little while back about painting Commissars and how to make 'that much black look interesting,' so I figure tackling three different styles of black cloth on one miniature might help with that. :D
Hey, little late but I have a few questions.. what black did you use to prime? and what else can you dry brush with instead of necron compound? Also, is there another color to paint the guns with? how does red look, I feel like white is too hard to do. Would this exact order also work for Iron Hands vehicles with lots of flat surfaces, thanks!
I have been looking for a style on how to paint my Iron Hands and I have to say this is the easiest method I have found. Especially for someone who has a shaking issue. Question what Spray Primer did you use to Undercoat.
Thank you for the response and I will do that I have been fighting with my paint scheme on these models for awhile and I like the leadbelcher better then the white Bolt rifles and such. Definitely got a subscribe from me and will be looking for some more videos when I decide what Sigmar Army I am doing. Thanks again.
Somewhat late to the party but to answer the 'medusan immortal' painting method, 'the wargamer' channel has a good technique that does not require an airbrush in his horus heresy series. For a more modern answer to this question, a silver basecoat with a games workshop black Contrast series of paint over top should give something interesting with minimal effort. That being said i quite like your method, seems easy to batch paint, feels like i am making good headway in short amounts of time and Looks really good
I've actually had a little play with Black Templar over a silver primer and I think you're on the mark with the idea of using Contrast stuff for those Medusans. Something else I shall have to have a play with!
Love your style, thank you. I wanted to try iron hands but had no idea how to differentiate them from any other black marines heh. I will use this tutorial to its fullest!
You could! Strictly speaking, the Iron Hands don't mark their Sergeants out in the same way as Codex-compliant Chapters do, but it's your army - whatever works for you to make them identifiable on the battlefield!
When it comes to where you ought to start, I'd always suggest to pick up the miniatures that look most appealing to you. Space Marines are very carefully designed to give easy results to a beginner but have a large area for an experienced painter to go nuts and explore other techniques, but that doesn't mean you're restricted to beginning there. I figure that if you start with what you like the look of most you're going to enjoy the end results more! While some might be a little trickier to paint at first it's usually not by much, honestly, and far better to go with something you find interesting.
If you don't mind a slightly steel finish to your black, then sure! There's nothing stopping you from adapting it to other black Chapters if you like the finish. :)
@@SonicSledgehammerStudio thanks! I'm quite new and I'm not sure about my edge highlight, but this seems like a interesting way to get some edges and add a nice finish to the armour!
might sound stupid but when i try and buy Iron Hands of the GW website i can't find iron hands anywhere i can only find an upgrade kit. I'm new so pls help
With most Space Marine Chapters you're able to use any 'generic' kit - things like the Space Marine Tactical Squads, Terminators and the like are all valid for the Iron Hands, and you just paint them up to match the army you're playing. The Iron Hands upgrade kit is neat, but it can get expensive if you want those bits for every Marine in your army! Just stick to the ordinary plastic boxes and you'll be fine.
Easiest chapter in 40K to paint. Spray with Chaos Black, done. P.S. Please don't be offended when I ask this, but is that your actual voice, or are you putting it on a bit? It isn't half a deep voice that you have. If I remember right, Iron Hands original colour scheme used to be a kind of dirty, bolt gun metal, silvery colour all over.
Don't know what to tell you, bud! That's just how I sound. 😅 I used to run a Chaos Black Iron Hands army back in the day when I wanted Marines on the table quickly, funnily enough.
@@SonicSledgehammerStudio Same here. Easiest chapter in the entire 40K universe to paint. Chaos Black undercoat, bit of silver on the chest eagle, bit of edge highlighting, done. They were great because the undercoat also acted as the base coat. It's not often when you get an army where you can do 2 phases of painting in 1 go. That was back in the dark days of Warhammer though, when all we had was Chaos Black and Skull White spray to work with. I'll never know why it took Gamesworkshop 30 years to add red, yellow and other colours to spray paint undercoats. Truth be told, I don't know how much longer GW has left to run, now that 3D printing's a thing these days. Give it another 30 years, and there might not even be a GW anymore, once 3D printing becomes more refined.
Hi Sonic, I am watching your channel now for a long time and I want to say "I am very like it" and your techniques are awesome. Now a question about your Iron Hands video. Would you offer the same method for the 'Raven Guard' Chapter too or do you think that their armour are different?

It could be either that you need to shake the can a little more, or you're spraying it while the can or the conditions outside are a little too cool or humid for it. Most of this is straight over the black primer, which could be just about anything. For reference I'd still suggest giving it a quick once-over with some Abaddon Black from the pot once you're done just to make sure the primer is smooth and has a nice, even finish to paint with.

can you do blood angels and blood ravens?
