- Installing the new clutch and flywheel, and whole bunch of new oil seals too. This is a total prick of a job, at least for me with little experience in changing clutches! In this episode, we're finishing the job and getting the patrol back on the road!

I am not a mechanic... but have played with cars all my life... many clutches over the years.. but first in my 2011 patrol.. seen a few videos online. But you are the best and most informative.. so there for most believable... well off to start my project..

No matter what you do on a vehicle it is always a shit job...but when its all done and fixed its bloody satisfying.. Good job mate thumbs up :)

good explanation on getting someone else to do the job and watch the wallet become empty... man 1 tough repair least they designed tabs for prying it apart cant wait for more of this backyard mechanics

thanks for that was lokking at doing the clutch myself but now i might just get the shop to do it, money well spent ( less aggro)

good job, tip, you should have put sealant between the top 3/4 part of the bell housing and engine, also on starter motor face but leave the bottom 1/4 part of the bell housing, stops water ingress and leave the lower part free of sealant to let water ingress out, its also in the Nissan manual, i do this all the time on everything, tractors too as i have seen it contributes to rust inside clutch area.
That's a top tip mate, cheers! Will be sure to do that the next time I do a clutch. Not as far away as I'd like it to be sadly!

Really good vid mate, i.ll add one hot tip if you don't mind, is check the gearbox input shaft for a wear groove caused by the old seal as it hardens, if the shaft is badly worn gear oil will leak past the new seal, and buy ya self some leather riggers gloves that saves cutting your fingers, wise to keep a set under the drivers seat for future repair's out in the field safety glasses, while your buying your gloves grab some of them as well some safty glasses you can buy that are "shades" or sunnys great out in the bush for what you blokes do on recovers and such, but keep up the awesome vids for us blokes that just cant get out in the bush ..cheer's

Thanks very for taking the time to video this. I imagine it slows things down considerably. I am in two minds if I should do this myself. Changed a G60 without trolley jack or hoist but the GU looks much heavier.
Yeah I guess it does slow things down quite a bit, I suppose that's part the reason why it takes me nearly half a day just to get the propshafts out! That's pretty impressive doing the G60 box with no mechanical aid! I reckon you could just about do that with the 2.8 gearbox if you took the transfer case off. If it's a 4.2 patrol gearbox though, they're a lot heavier.
Turns out I did have mech aids ... a strong long length of 4by2 and a seat belt. Similar to how you used the hoist i.e. sling thru the center console but with ends of 4by2 poking out each door.
Relatively easy to lift and chock off the floor pan when lifting at the end of a long pole.
Bonus for me I didn't realise until i watched your video was there were no trolley feet in my way.
Cold spoon moment when spigot finally finds home.
I think G60 easier to work on, more room, better access thru the floor, less bits attached and less specialist tools required.
I took a look under my 3.0l 2004 Nissan and it all looks way too tight. Struggling just to get under and I can't even undo the 4WD selector knob. Gear knob eventually came undone after lots of effort.
So I have chickened out and decided to trade it in. Wife and I are a little sad to bid it farewell.
You videos are entertaining, down to earth and a lot of fun. Keep 'em coming.
Mate that's proper backyard mechanic style! Indeed you are right, modern vehicles are a completely different ball game....Yeah that sadness when your beloved rolls away for the last time! But There's also that sadness when the bloody thing keeps breaking haha.

We did a clutch at our campsite in Albany during Boxing Day, using a pipe across and 4 ratchet straps to hold the gear box we did it in 3.5 hours. Better than towing it to Perth for $1800
Trying to picture this... did you put pipe across car underthe bonnet to hold front part of the gearbox?
Most likely would have been inside the car braced across the cavity where the gear sticks protrude, and not under the bonnet. Since most of this comes off to pull the gearbox off anyway it’s a pretty smart technique to hang the box off a pipe this way.

The drum brake in the patrol hand brake is one of if not the strongest and reliable hand break of all.
it doesn't need replacing because it is not used to stop the vehicle and would not normally wear out in a million years.

The last time I did a clutch job was on a Nissan 300ZX. I got the gearbox out with the missus grabbing me by the feet and pulling me out on my workshop creeper with the gearbox sitting on my chest (car was suspended way off the ground on stands sitting on bricks). I don't think I want to try that with the patrol!

Where did you get the RD28 clutch alignment tool? Any chance you know a part number?
Came with the clutch kit mate, should just be able to use a generic off the shelf one from an auto parts store
did you use a impact on the last 2 bolts or ring spanner or socket wrench
so what happens after remooving all bellhousing bolts do you rotate it or will it just come out

Alex, i love and appreciate all the effort you make with your videos. i will definitely send mine to a auto repair shop. but for the seal behind the handbrake drum, and the prop shaft universals i will have to do that myself.
do you have a vid of the universal replacements - looks very easy but there are always gotshas!!
are there plastic dust caps on the four ends of a universal? - will i need cir-clip pliers?

+Irfaan Harris Thanks mate! Yeah the seal behind the handbrake wouldn't be too hard to do yourself. I have never done the universals but I have seen that there are circlips holding them on so yes you will need some circlip pliers. There's no dust caps on mine :)
glad i took patrol in to have universals changed ...they were stuffed...
Just realising my patrol needs clutch replaced which is depressing after plenty other expensive repairs. I'll be sending to the professionals...any idea of a fair price?

I have seen comments around $2600 for parts and labour. Nissan made an offhand remark when trading in of $2500 for parts only. Ebay ranges around $1600 for dual mass flywheel with clutch and pressure plate.

Slide hammer for spigot/pilot bearing.. Dual use tools are a good thing

Been trying to do this and have gotten stuck and frustrated. How did you get the gearbox back in. I have tried rotating it with the transfer case pointing down but just cant seem to get the bell housing over the clutch inside the transfer tunnel. There anything simple im not thinking of?

hay cob whats easiest way to get them driveshafts off... mine are tight as fudge..
+rata armstrong so were mine mate. I used heat on mine, a MAP gas torch. I also used long spanners and a LOT of force. Getting them off alone took me 2 hours or so just cos they were so tight.

In my 2.8 patrol the clutch fork keep falling off time to time causing for me to not to have an operational clutch.
what would be the cause plz? I initially thought I shit my slave cylinder but its not GUESSING.

G'day mate. My best guess would be that the spring that holds it to the spigot bearing is damaged or weak? Or perhaps the rubber which surrounds the fork where it goes in is damaged? Either of those would probably cause such a problem.
to put it back, would I will have to drop the G'box down?
If it was the spring yes. If it's the rubber then no you should be able to seat that in place easily. I'd remove the slave cylinder, remove the rubber if it's there and give it a wriggle/have a look through the hole.

+TheAppledog a handful of them from Supercheap Auto and a couple i had to go to nissan for.
How do you find the single mass flywheel mate?
A lot of hit and miss comments on them compared to the dual mass
Currently have slipping when on boost after a mud pit 😭
Turns out it had already done the single mass flywheel conversion at some point in its life which I didn't know about, so I can't compare the single mass to a dual mass sadly. I can for a D40 navara single mass conversion, and the verdict for that was it's a little more harsh to shift and introduces some vibration into the vehicle. Slipping clutch after a mud pit is what forced me to change the clutch in this video too.
what was the damage?...cost
I have access to a good discount on parts, so clutch and flywheel kit was about $680, maybe $150 for all the seals and sealant etc. Then about $200 for the chiropractor haha!

Me and my old man did my clutch in my td42 gq in 6 hours on the ground but obviously didn’t do all the other shit you did
You didn't need to change half of those seals, and also your clutch would of fixed itself if you'd just slipped it a bit to clean off the mud n shit
Yeah, I just like changing everything I possibly can while it's easiest. As for the clutch, i gave it another 3000km of driving after the mud incident, and it did improve greatly but still juddered a bit. Being a 2.8 diesel the clutch had always copped a fair hiding too, not the torqiest of engines!
A car hoist would have made it easier
A skyhook wouldve made it easier still.
