Rubicon 2 Panel Overview

- This video provides an overview of the panel and features of the Rubicon II analog oscillator. We also provide a basic introduction to TZFM synthesis and demonstrate some examples of linear and exponential FM, oscillator sync, and our special Warp and Squish circuits. Owners of the original Rubicon will benefit from this video as many of the features are retained.
Rubicon II
Thru-Zero Discrete Triangle Core VCO
Rubicon2 is the second generation of the classic Rubicon triangle core analog VCO, designed in collaboration with David G. Dixon.
It features nine simultaneously available waveshape outputs; two sub-oscillators; three variations of a sine wave; a new Tri-State pulse circuit; exponential Frequency Modulation (FM); linear FM; hard and soft (flip) sync; pulse width modulation; CV control of FM index; a new foldable Warp circuit; and the ability to perform perfectly-symmetrical Thru-zero FM with absolutely no change in pitch or tracking accuracy.
This is not a ‘set it and forget it’ oscillator. It’s an oscillator that demands to be tweaked, modulated and explored. It’s an oscillator that’s proudly analog and eschews all shortcuts. As such, it’s an oscillator that rewards its owner with sounds as boundless as their creative limits allow.

Can't wait to flip it and squish it! Pre-ordered!
Exceptionally well done demo! :-)
these things sound so good an versatile!
Looks like a lot of fun!
Excellent !
Impressive engineering
Dixon is a genius.
No, those aren't my daddy's waveforms (actually, my daddy didn't have any waveforms). You guys have really upped your video game!
Those aint your momma's waveforms either.
@@FreqBand It turns out that many of my waveforms are illegal.
@@docsketchy Momma's best waveforms..... are a family circuit secret.
Waveform distillery.
When you find a momma with these waveforms, never let her go.
Love my Rubicon mk1, looks like I'm going to be getting this one too!
same here
great stuff!
Next one in line 👌
really cool
Wow! I just learned this existed tonight and, as a proud Dixie II+ and Shapeshifter owner (Shapeshifter is what made me break down and decide to get into modular), I am *so* impressed by these features and sounds. Great work!
Thanks, Troy!
Ten months later, I still can't understand the thing but its raw power and flexibility are very welcome.
Damn, now I need it really bad 😀
I'm thinking about getting Intellijel Case and a few Intellijel modules, using Softube Modular got me into your products.
Rubicon 2 is the oscillator I wish I had purchased instead of the Z3000.
I haven't bought my oscillators yet. I just bought my case (Intellijel of course). However, the Rubicon II is definitely in the next round of purchases. I'm probably going with Tip Top Z3000 for my vanilla oscillator. I believe it has a tuner built in to it as well for external signals. As far as the Rubicon, so many delicious options... before you even get into any complicated modulations and effects.
I want to see the Rubicon used as a complex LFO to modulate a filter's cut-off and drive over a four bar loop... with and without retriggers. I want to see the Rubicon doing the majority of the work and then something crazy with the LFO (doesn't have to be filter related). I think you've kind of skipped over what this thing can do in low-n-slow mode.
I'm sure you'll love your Intellijel case!
We could probably do an entire video just on using the Rubicon as an LFO. So much to cover with this guy. Thanks for the idea!
ScottMFR got the Rubicon 2. Something in it rattles but it seems to power up and oscillate. Got the morgasmatron and quad vca today. Will be a fun night.
I wouldn't worry about the rattling, that's often just the spacers between the panel and the knobs so it's fairly common. Definitely sounds like a fun night!
How does exponential, through zero FM work?
Yum🇨🇦
I just installed a pair of these. It's like getting a new brain in my rack.
is Rubicon 2 a good module for bass patches? Didn’t see to much video examples in this direction. Thx
Rubicon is great for thick bass tones! You can always add more girth by blending in the SUB oscillator output.
Did you check out the other Rubicon video? There's a few good examples here: ua-cam.com/video/BwxSuhqsrEE/v-deo.html
Yes checked now thx! Your are right, indeed crazy module for bass as well :)
Hi there - I expect the answer to my question will be obvious, but can you please tell me how I apply a gate signal to the Rubicon2? All the other oscillators in my system have both a 1v/oct and a gate (or trigger) input, but the Rubicon2 only has a 1v/oct input - how do I do this? I'm really enjoying the Rubicon2, but not being able to gate/trig it is frustrating. Thanx!
Most analog oscillators like Rubicon just output a steady tone, so you need to use a VCA and an envelope to control the volume level. Generally it's only the percussion or digital voices like Rings and Plonk that have gate inputs.
@@ScottMFR Thanx Scott - I thought it might be simple. Yes, I was only looking at my digital VCOs. Fortunately, I have both your Dual ADSR and Quad VCA for such duties!
at 3:44 oscilloscope goes batshit bananas, can't even figure out what waveshapes it was showing)
It is a SAW wave being modulated so you see it essentially switching between a SAW and RAMP as it passes through the zero frequency point and reverses.
ok but 10 seconds later it's all wavy and self intersecting like what on earth is that, is it even legal?
Complex waveforms are complex!
The waveforms generated are subject the laws of the country in which they are output
According to all known laws of sound design, there is no way that a wave should look like that. Its shape is too crazy to even be contained within the screen of oscilloscope. The wave, of course, generates anyways. Because waves don't care what synth nerds think is impossible.
4:41 wait, which is which again?

what is RTFM?

ScottMFR
I didn't find where it is mentioned
R stands for Read, T is for The, and M is for Manual...
ScottMFR nope
turns out the term I found was Real Time Frequency Modulation and for your surprise it wasn't in the manual!

LOL... Well the Rubicon certainly does Real Time Frequency Modulation!
