  • In this movie I demonstrate creating a hard sync patch where the master is the single VCO that may be in a small core system or a semi-modular synth like the Moog Mother-32, and use it to drive a second oscillator such as the Dixie II+. For those who wonder exactly what’s going on when you use sync, I focus heavily on what’s happening with the waveform output. I also look at the Dixie II+’s unique Flip function, where the waveform reverses rather than resets when it received a sync pulse from its master, resulting in a new waveform with twice the overall cycle length of the master. For more information, see learningmodular....
    This movie is one of four on the Intellijel Dixie II+ from my online course, "Learning Modular Synthesis: Eurorack Expansion" (available July 2017). For more details including the list of movies and an overview of the course, visit: learningmodular...

    Thanks for this. Other stuff I've seen on syncing oscillators tends to be rather...theoretical. Lotsa charts and diagrams and waveforms. I just wanted to know what to plug into which. And now I do.

    I was trying the Sync and Flip inputs on my Dixie II+ (using an STO as the sync source), and couldn't hear anything different. I had no idea that the synced oscillator needs to be tuned higher, but thinking about it for a bit it makes perfect sense.
    Thanks!

      Yeah; sometimes I too forget the "correct" relationship between the two VCOs, and wonder why it's not working as I expect...

      In my case it wasn't a case of "forgetting" so much as "never knowing". I'm very much learning modular and sometimes forget basic stuff like patching a gate into the ADSR.

      Just trying to put your mind at rest that sometimes, even the "pros" fumble around with their modular systems... ;-)

    the hard sync on the dixie is making an unpleasant buzzing :\

    just wondering if i can tune Dixie 2+ to play nicely together with Moog 32

    • @LearningModular
      @LearningModular  3 роки тому

      Yes. Also remember that you can use the Mother's front panel octave transpose buttons to move it into the range of other VCOs.

      @@LearningModular Thanks! I got an STO recently but its hard to match with M32's tuning. I sequence both independently. As far as i know Dixie 2+ has a perfect tracking

      a tip : you can watch movies on KaldroStream. Been using them for watching a lot of movies lately.

    I picked up the Dixie II+ thinking I could use it as a central LFO source to control frequency modulation on both my Elements and my Ripples as well as a source for 1v/Oct on my Edges but I think I might have had the wrong idea as it is seemingly leaking over into the other modules when utilized for this source. I think I have some more learning to do

      If it's "leaking over into the other modules" that sounds like a problem with your power system. Start by replacing any flying bus cables with real bus boars - preferably ones with heavy copper (like the MIDI-Hardware), filtering (like the MDLR), or both (the Genus Modu LIBB is the best).

      @eroslivieratos272 6 років тому

      I'm not quite sure what it is. It's an MDLR case with MDLR power currently and it definitely isn't drawing anywhere near the limits on each bus board. I'm going to do some digging in a little bit and see if maybe I'm utilizing it wrong somehow.

      Crosstalk is not caused by power limits. It is caused by grounding issues. Even a fraction of an ohm can introduce noise.

      I've been using a Furman power strip to hopefully help with any possible grounding issues, generally I haven't had an issue before with pedals/amps/modules. However, this is my first Intellijel module but I can't imagine that would have anything to do with it.

      Grounding issues with modular synths are inside the case. In addition to wanting a low-noise power supply, the connections between the power supply and the bus boards, the way the bus boards are designed, and the grounding of the modules to the rails of the case all make a difference in how much noise ends up in the audio, instead of being drained or filtered away.

    Hi, I just received my Dixie 2+, however, my FM1 input does not appear to do anything at all. I've follow you're video here, but have had no luck. I've tried sending a multitude of different signals into FM1, with zero results. Safe to assume mine is defective.....GRRR!

    Many thanks! Love your videos.
    I strongly suggest retiring the "master" and "slave" terminology in your videos. There are plenty of alternatives that do not contribute to normalizing a history of injustice and suffering. Thanks for considering!

      I agree those old terms should be retired. Since I recorded that vide, I keep trying to find a good replacement that will stick, and still find myself falling back to using the old terminology sometime - but I agree overall with the sentiment.

      @@LearningModular it's easy to fall into the pattern!
      It will always be easier to not resist :)
      I like "leader" and "follower" for this context.
      Thanks for the ping!

    What happens if you send signals to both hard and flip sync simultaneously? I wanna try it but I'm afraid it's not a good idea

    • @LearningModular
      @LearningModular  3 роки тому +1

      Go ahead and patch it - you won't break anything. ;-)
