Spent many years in a local video store and other popular franchise video outlets but man, I'm still blown away by how many movies you cover that I had no idea existed like Panther Squad!
Thats a gift that no one else has
I had a bad (good, I guess? lol) habit of renting just about everything and anything at my video store. Once I went in and the owner said "I've had this movie for the past month and its so bad, no one has rented it" CHALLENGE ACCEPTED. (It was The Tall Guy with Jeff Goldblum)
They could do a present day sequel and call it Cougar Sqaud. Oh wait.
I like how Pierre Chevalier literally translated his name into the pseudonym "Peter Knight". Also, they've managed to misspell Belgium on the envelope at 03:52, writing "Belgque" instead of "Belgique". Extreme competnce.
And I was thinking Peter Knight was the middle son from the Brady Bunch.

Well of course you can take off your hearing protection while you're still in the range if everyone is just dry-firing empty revolvers.
I wish we could get movies like this and Andy Sidaris' films made today, only with modern high quality action and fights. They are simple, stupid fun. What's not to love?

I guess I'm stuck on this old idea I heard back in the 90s where softcore straight-to-video thrillers were apparently huge renters. So what would it be like if something like that were made with a budget and an attempt at quality? The internet kind of killed that notion, and while I think streaming would be good for it, it seems like people are too timid to try.
The (Showtime?) series Strike Back sorta did that, as an excellent action series with some sexy times, but it's mostly serious. Something a bit sillier and over-the-top, like a good action comedy/satire plus more than just a little softcore is something I don't think I've ever seen, you know?
The closest thing we can get are some relatively high-value parody sketches such as some of Key & Peele's. Also "Kung Fury" comes to mind.

These B-movies are gold, they are so bad that end up being funnier than any comedy being released today.
And there is lot of eye-candy too.
''Optical effects gun'' is actually a very cool plastic toy I had when I was 8 or 10 yr old. They glued some stuff on it, and originally it's white, but I recognized it, as it was my favorite toy. XD
Same! I immediately recognized it from the grip and came down here just to mention it. Although searching online, based on the "ZX 271" they didn't even repaint it. You might have had a slightly different model from the same line. Tracking it down I found that mine was also a bit different with a silver/black color scheme, but I also saw a white one.
Wow, they really cheaped out on the FX budget!

1:10 that's called short-hand writing, a mostly lost art form reserved for journalists and stenographers. Time was, every secretary worth her salt had to know how to write like that. I know it looks like chicken-scratch, but I assure you, it's quite legit.

it's proof the journalist attended medical school. Before they started priting them, all recipes I got from any doctor looked exactly like the page of that notebook.

I actually owned that laser toy gun she uses, it had a revolver-like cylinder on the tip that rotated every time you shot, it was pretty cool and heavy for being plastic. I guess they took the cylinder off the tip to use as a prop, but man it looks great on camera, like Cybil herself

I love my cheesy films and this looks like a fun watch. The Andy Sidaris joke made me chuckle and get the impression that Panther Squad could be have been part of his filmography, minus the lack of nudity, an aspect which is pretty much mandatory for him during his exploitation run. The review is quite fun and it's nice that you spotlight mostly forgotten B movies that most folks either haven't seen or dimly remember from their days of youth. Cheers.

I hope you know that by putting the Max headroom incident into this video, you have now triggered the nightmares of several thousand Chicagoans that subscribe to your channel. Myself included. That day was one of the scariest of my entire childhood. Glad I was introduced to Doctor who at an early age. I'm being sarcastic when I say that.

@@zerocool5395 nope. But, I worked for Chicago television for a bit. I worked with the guy called svengoolie, one of the coolest horror show hosts ever. And when I was there, it was pretty much known who did it by a lot of the Old timers in the business. I don't know if you ever saw any of those UA-cam documentaries, but it was suspected that it was a disgruntled employee with inside information, as well as amazing technical abilities. And that's pretty much it. They will never catch him and it's probably a good thing for a lot of people.
I think at this point its past the statute of limitations but broadcasting/FCC can be petty so its probably for the best that whoever did it remain anon. Although it also adds to the mystique of the whole thing if no one every finds out who did it.

Thanks for the review, Cecil. This is one film I have no recollection of, but it certainly looks like a lot of cheesy fun. With three different producers from three different countries, this film is quite the world traveler.

@@Jonahcp Oh, I'm sure he was. I was just posting for those who didn't know about shorthand. It's really interesting. It's related to stenography, where you basically just write symbols representing the sounds you hear instead of the actual words.

Oh wow, I had that spaceship as a kid. It was part of the 'Shogun Warriors' line of robots.
I remember the Shogun Warriors! They were so cool but I never had any of them.
I watched this today and I really rather enjoyed it. Took a while to get going, but the last third was great. It was trash and low budget, but it knew that and didn't try to hide it and just had fun. I laughed hysterically at the disintegrator gun. Greatest plot device ever. And Frank was really rather awesome.
They can make a sequel "The Cougar Squad".
That cameo made me laugh out loud ;-);-)

Not gonna lie, love these kind of flicks, so I’m a’ gonna track it down
I rented it as a kid because of the cover. When you got the movie they put it in a blank box. So I took the risk 😊
Came for the ladies (no pun intended), stayed for the silly story.
My parents didn't really watch movies I rented and nobody in Belgium cared for ratings, aside from porn . I saw a lot of bloody great movies this way when I was quite young.
These guys really needed to call the _Spaceforce!!!_

I was just talking to my mom about Alec Baldwin's accident with his gun and I said something like this, "I don't even know why bullets would be on set. Most people aren't looking close enough to even tell if a gun is loaded or not when they are watching a film anyway." Then I watch this review and he points out the gun has no bullets in it. I'm guilty of doing this myself. (I believe in "Good Fellas", when Karen has the gun pointed at Henry, it's not loaded). Anyway, I just found it funny that you mentioned that. It's a weird coincidence.

This video is much better than the movie itself. II's a better, more entertainment delivery of the same story, and has the bonus featurettes about the backstage stuff. So, all the movie has, and more, in a shorter time. I was very surprised to know it wasn't made on a bet, like, _"hey, I bet we can do an Andy Sidaris -like movie as we go, with no budget whatsoever, we just go on with a camera and ask people to volunteer as actors as we go around the place. Three days, one week tops, plus some editing on my spare time."_ I also imagined there were no credits because the entire movie was made by Allan and Alice Smithee, in different tasks and even acting roles, with make-up and so forth.

This is a minor thing but the guy who looked like he was just writing scribbles was actually writing in Gregg shorthand, a really good way to jot notes quickly before we could just record on our phones

To be fair, journalists do write in such squiggles. Also known as short hand writing. It's usually used on the field when taking notes very quickly.
