  • Mention where to find the best Penang char kuey teow when you are in Penang and no doubt everyone will point you to Siam Road. Yes, it is where Uncle Tan is located. Now he is at a shop lot right opposite the street spot where he has been operating for decades. The 78 year old uncle is still frying the dish himself with the help of his son. The secret has always been his stove, which is charcoal fired and not gas fired. The shop opens everyday except Sunday, Monday and there is always a queue that patiently waits for their servings. Did you know that this stall was listed as the Top 50 ranked 14th in the 2017 World Street Food Congress? Now you know, so come on over and confirm it !

I am born and raise in penang Island. This uncle has been around for his char koay teow for ages. His cart has been his loyal companion. My family loves his char koay teow. If you love good food in penang, you must have patience to wait for the food. 😁
Oh, there are more local street food all hidden in wet markets in penang Island, its cheap, tasty and 'authentic'. Thanks for featuring this.

The father is still the best even when he cooks 5 plates at a time. Used to eat at his place when I was 4 years old, bringing my own tiffin carrier to tapau back to my granny's place in 140a, Malacca Str. Those were the times where even the wantan mee came knocking on his wooden implement while cycling to take orders for tot-tok mee (wantan mee) No plastics but perfectly balanced bowls or noodles either dry or soupy. There was even the guy pushing his laksa stall or the candy man with his boiled candies in a pan, chipping away the hardened candy when we ordered.
