Sleep, My Son (Philza's Requiem) [Dream SMP original song]

- Headcanon time!
While everyone went to Schlatt's funeral in L'Manberg, @ph1lza cooled down for a bit near Technoblade's place and made an improvised gravestone for his son @WilburPlays, "who died with the nation he built". There was no official funeral, just Phil reciting the Requiem prayer for the peace upon Wilbur's soul.
This was one of the three songs that I cried during writing (one's Theme of the Abandoned, which you should listen to after this), and In The Final Night. It was a rather personal thing for me, as well, since Phil was parenting Wilbur from afar (just like my situation). He couldn't do more because of that.
This was released May 16th, six months after Wilbur died.
This is the "father" in the "father-and son release". Check out the son here:

@@pleaseleavesrs yes thank you kind stranger. 🌞
This fits Wilbur and Philza a lot. The whole vibe of calmness but not a nice calm, a sad calm. I also like that there are references to Tommy’s lament which makes it a whole lot better since those two have such a history together. The lyrics also referance a bit of Fundy’s theme (?) the line ‘I tried to get you back to my loving arms’ and ‘I tried to go back to your loving arms’ from Fundy’s theme and also ‘Finally lived in peace’ since both have lost someone dear to them. Idk if this whole paragraph made sense since I was in too much of a sad state because of this song skdnskjdej

The Dream SMP's universe is a reality even harsher than ours if you think about it.
The server's inhabitants are bound to live a life filled with hardships and suffering as the thirst for power reigns everyone's heart and mind - without there ever being an escape from it.
Now, it is incredibly human to wish for control, to have a firm grip on our lives, but the Dream SMP shows what happens when power becomes the guiding principle in a society's existence - a select few learn to play the game of life better, often more ruthlessly, than others, gain the ability to rise above the people and pull their strings as if they were toys.
While in the narrative tyrants appear punished mercilessly in the character's world, fate seems to be even worse to the ones who are innocent.
If you're determined to keep the peace, to be truly good, you'll be laughed at, you'll become a victim because the wicked ones see an opportunity in your good will.
And sooner or later, you'll cave, too, in one way or another, and sin will stain your hands and your face, making it impossible to recognize your old self in the mirror.
And the worst thing about this is that there's literally nothing that would make it worthwhile to be good, at least not from a normative perspective.
There's no reward waiting for you after living a life dedicated to love and kindness, no judgement or justice;
Regardless of what you have done, there's no heaven, only hell - sinners and saints end up in the exact same spot.
Characters can't even dream of death being a sweet release, a soft fall into nothingness, because we know now that being in Limbo is worse than life could ever be.
Nobody's ever gonna "sleep" or "rest in peace".
How ironic and cruel that the Angel of Death didn't know about this when he sent his son to the Afterlife;
But then again, how could he?
He may have traveled different lands, perhaps even different realities, and seen the world change over centuries - but that's exactly the crux of it, isn't it?
Phil's an immortal, with a vast knowledge over life, and it would be unmatched if it wasn't for his mind forgetting over time, but he's never seen death.
His blade may have caused the demise of many, but death has never taken him, and so he believed it to be mercy when it was, in fact, a curse.
And it is saddening to imagine the guilt he'll feel once Wilbur tells him about his 13 years in hell.
It's bad enough that his son's life ended before his, when they possibly could have spent eternity together due to sharing the same blood and neither of them could have known about the nature of the Afterlife, but this...
I doubt that Philza's character will ever emotionally recover from this, not until death will inevitably find the poor Angel himself... and probably not after his demise, either.
I have a strong feeling that we might already know what his personal Limbo might look like...
(I recognize a certain motif in the song...
It's a nod to "Lament of the Right Hand Man", isn't it?
Fantastic as always!)
wrong song but it has a reference ues
Bruh this must have taken so long
Adding a comment in case others ever comment here... I love this
you were either the student who studied and got good grades or the lazy one who never studied and put low effort into everything but still somehow got good grades
What do you think Phil’s limbo looks like?
This takes on a whole new meaning with techno gone.
Its Hilarious how by listening to all the theme songs-
What the music makes it sound like: Something like a movie or an actual Nation
What it actually is: BLOCK MEN FIGHTING OVER CIRCLES
My therapist gonna hear about this 😔😭
listening to this while drawing wilbur’s death for a dsmp art contest the pain
This song is a masterpiece. I was legit tearing up before your vocals even started. The "father, oh father" was the thing that fucking killed me and let me break out in sobs. Amazing work like always PJA! I will deffo add this to my "CRY" playlist XD
“Tommy, where’s my grave?”
“Pardon?”
“Tommyinnit I want to know where my grave is, where you’ve buried me..”
“Wilbur..
You don’t deserved a grave....”
OUCH-
Okay, if this is real, send me the link
@@JustACandyy it didn't exactly happen like this, but Tommy saod his grave was L'Manburg's crater
Ok, I absolutely LOVE how you refrence all of your other songs. ITS EVERYWHERE. EVERY SINGLE SONG HAS A REFERNECE TO ANOTHER
I agree. It helps keep a feeling of continuity
Exactly! The title of this song is the title of a lullaby that got cut from L'Manburg the musical. Sad, right? But a cool easter egg.
i'm crying *and laughing as i remember that wilbur's mom is litterally a samsung smart refrigerator*

Requiem is one of my favorite words, way to use it in the title!!!

Finally a Philza song!
Who else is ready to cry!?
I love the repeated guitar motif, it's soothing and calm but then paired with the lyrics, damn my heart.
Me and my friend always talk about how unfair it is for these people to be this talented and we’ve made a plan to sue all the talented people. Just prepare for a lawsuit /j
Seriously though this is SO good. As usual. I think that this is one of my favorites. Everything about it is just so good
Oh so that's why I got sued for 2,000,000 dollars? Cuz I'm talented? Good to know :)
Nobody sued me. I lied. Don't trust everything you see on the internet kids.
Me just now realizing a ton of Dream SMP content came out exactly 6 months after the Dawn of the 16th
Not the last chord being unfinished I’m crying

I NOW GET IT OH MY GOD
bored writing time!
I wandered through the empty lands, my hair tied by a ribbon into a swift bun, L'Manburg burning behind me. Smoke coated my lungs, a reminder of the traitorous deeds. The cry of a son whispered into the air, blood tainting the snow. It seeped into the aromas of fire, coloring ash in iron.
The explosions still rang in my head in waves, shoving my brain apart in songs of pain. My scarf was destroyed, withering just like the country I left to die. The slick release of a sword sung, screaming death in it's wake. They'd never know what it'd mean to be free.
This place held memories, I realized as I approached a thin stone cross. It was a reminder of the reeking stench of hatred as it buried itself into his heart. Whoever "he" was, however, was only determined by the sign standing firmly on the gravestone.
Wilbur Soot?
The...the second traitor of L'Manburg?
Someone buried him?
I stared confused at the burial sight, my eyes wandering over the sign.
Wilbur Soot.
The villain.
Everyone in our nation had memorized his name, knew it by heart. He was the reason it had disbanded in the first place. He was the reason it ever came back together.
Wilbur Soot was alive.
So what was his gravestone doing sitting here?
A willowy, broken bucket hat sat at the foot of the cross, striped in greens and whites. Beside it was two discs, a tiny sheep plushie, and a crown. I picked up one of the discs: mellohi.
In my inventory was a jukebox, I remembered. Slightly broken, from the original bench, played like a tired trumpet. I placed it and slipped the disc into the slit, sitting back against the gravestone. My mind calmed as I hummed the familiar tune.
But this wasn't mellohi.
I heard the deafening roar of the first anthem of L'Manburg trickle out of the box, a broken voice singing it softly, as if scared. But...it was different somehow. It wasn't the right lyrics, it wasn't the right people.
It wasn't about L'Manburg...it was about the traitors.
Perhaps, I thought, looking back at the burning flames behind me, Wilbur was right.
It really was never meant to be.
(this was set in a future where L'Manburg joined back together and was betrayed once more. Just an interesting thought ig :D the character isn't in the dsmp tho)

I didnt take wilburs death this harsh but now im thinking about it.. its tragic
Cause wilbur just wanted to have a happy life with his friends and familys. Til one.. by one... took of and left him. Except for one. Tommy٫ he was there with him since the start.. til wilbur broke off and took a turn. He gave up on everything٫ he blew up a nation he build with his bare hands.. and as his last vision was his own father٫ a sword punched through his chest and phil cries from the tragedy...
_im gonna sleep now i dont have to make myself cry.._

Sleep, My Son Lyrics :3
You told me you'll travel across the seas
To go on your own adventure
You told me that you will
Keep in touch with me
"Father, oh Father," you said
"I'll make sure I'll write"
I believed in my heart as I
Gazed upon the books stacked inside
You told me you found a
New place to stay
And you found a brotherhood of man
You told me 'bought a nation
You're currently fighting for
"Father, oh Father," you said to me
"We won the war"
I trusted my instincts
As I framed the declaration you signed
My pride, my joy, my everything
I raised you to do what is right
I usеd to keep you in my arms
I never left you out of my sight
If I had a wish, if I had a prayеr
Stay safe with me throughout the night
(Sleep, my son)
(Sleep, my son)
You told me the last time
You'll keep the lead
You sent me your plans and desires
You told that the last time
And that was the last time you wrote

"Father, oh Father"
I heard your cries from afar
I started getting worried
As I sent my friends up in the sky
My son, my beloved son
I knew that you weren't alright
I tried to get you back to my arms
Before your final goodbye
You had a wish
You had it planned
To die by my sword, as I cried
(Sleep, my son)
(Sleep, my son)
(Sleep, my son)
Rest eternal grant to him, O Lord
(Sleep, my son)
Let light perpetual shine
(Sleep, my son)
May he rest in peace
May he rest in peace

May he rest in peace

Finally lived in peace
