Back in 1979, Yamaha would have you split the case. After doing it that way a couple of times. I discovered your method of dropping the shaft out of the bottom. I remember the shift fork always being bent as the main culprit. Thanks for taking me down memory lane. Good luck.

Nice to see you back spannering in your workshop Andy.
As said, the Achilles heel that puts folk off this bike as a potential purchase.
Not owned one so not researched whether it was an engine out and split cases job.

My baby is unable to reach 4th or fifth gear. She shifts smoothly but always had a pretty solid clank shifting to 1st from neutral. I'm in the research phase right now and pray I can resolve this myself. I'm going forward slowly and cautiously. So far, I am finding your content very inspiring. Thanks!

Great video Andy 👍 Nice you didn't have to split the cases on the XS1100 to get to the gear cluster, I was waiting for you removing the engine at the start !

It's interesting that different manufacturers have problems on components that they've never fixed. I've a couple of mates with FJR13s. Both late model bikes so decades newer than the XS11 but they still have that problem. Both bikes were recalled recently by Yamaha to have gears etc replaced. No cost to the owners and the operation was successful on both.

If memory serves me the selection forks and the drum where not hardened and we sold lots of 1j7 parts for them back in the 80/90s ( I worked at a distribution parts dep )

Back when I was racing kawasaki EX500s poping out of second was a common problem. I used to file the dogs square then file the engaging slot in the gear also . I to was worried about cutting through the hardening but it lasted three seasons till I changed bikes . Back cutting the dogs didn't work so good road racing .It made up shifts slow and difficult.

That impact driving screwdriver was a nice piece of kit. Have never heard of them. I do have a standard impact driver with the 3/8th drive, and adapter for 1/4 hex bits. Has saved me a number of times, especially with Phillips and slot head screws, which I tend to always round out. 😊

Fantastic Andy, champion bloke👌 I kinda miss the work fabrication & engineering aspect. But, I’m guessing you were on Christmas break 😎 Hope you and family have a great one!
Maybe repairing this Yammy will inspire you to get yours back on the road! The problem with Aus & registration is you’ll need to go through the hassle of getting a RWC to re-register it? PITA. I’m guessing the tyres have tubes in them too even though they’re alloys for that era.
    Cheers for showing your skills🤙

Nice to see you back in the workshop Andy. One question, is 5th gear symmetrical? couldn't you flip it to the unworn side? I'll guess the answer and say no otherwise it would already have been done, stupid question please ignore.

I rode the XS1100 as police bike (QLD) for a few years... notorious for this issue...

The XS750 was renowned for 2nd gear failing. Was the selector plate bending.
TBF the XS750 was a shite bike, I do like the 1100s.

Hi Andy. I really enjoy you videos on the xs1100. If you are going to upgrade the wiring on the cafe racer I would love to see you install a motogadget m unit on the xs. I am about to put one on an xs project bike.

@@ANDY5 im sort of realising that.. Yamahas gearboxes seem quite different.. shaft drive complicates engine removal too.. great channel

I bought. an xs750se in 1978 in Canada. 2nd gear went at 11400 km. Yamaha said I abused it and warranty was done at 10000km.! And no new part...B/O Japan till november! That was in june...! I had to buy a scraped bike for 500$ for the parts. Same milleage and the 2nd gear was also halfway gone. I have had over 50 bikes since then. Many new ones. Never again a Yamaha. T7 looked good, but Norden 901 it is.

Hi Andy really engoyed being with you on this video. Years back I had second gear slip in my XJ 700 Maxim X. California model so I got the rarest one. I split cases to do this job. I had the whole engine spaced around the little shed I had. A friend of mine an engineer undercut the gear and I put it all back only to split cases yet again. Not a job for the feint herted as I recall. I replaced the gear with an xj900 second gear which is the same. It shares the same box, I'm pretty sure, and again that many are shared by Yamaha. I hope you have more success than I did back cutting. Makes me wonder if this method would work on the xj series?

Thanks for the post can you please mention the specific tipe of oil for the bike to use .Modern full synthetic oil tends to do something to the clutch plate slipping.

    Hi from the uk
Great to see you back in the shop
Is it just me or are you morphing into Eric Clapton.
How come you didn't go for a replacement gear or even dove tailing and re hardening
