The Winter House was built by a German man named Gustav Winter in the 1940's. Legend has it that Hermann Goring subsidized the construction during ww2. It is said that the mansion is situated above underwater caverns that stretch to the ocean, allowing submarines to reach the house directly.

The car hire insurance in Fuerteventura only covers you on roads that are tarmaced. If you are in an accident or breakdown on a non tarmaced road they charge you a fortune. There’s another UA-camr who holidays there who this happened to when his car was leaking oil and broke down. He wasn’t anywhere way out like Cofete, he was just on a road outside town where they were building apartments and had not yet tarmaced the road. Lots of people take the chance with hire cars anyway, or maybe they just don’t know. Years ago we used to go to Fuerteventura a lot. Wrangler jeeps were for hire everywhere and we used to hire one to drive off road as did lots of tourists. What I didn’t know is that you were not supposed to go on non tarmaced roads even in those. You never see them for hire now. I did enquire can you pay extra for insurance to drive to cofete and Villa Winter but no it doesn’t seem to be possible. We took a jeep tour but it wasn’t very good and we got 20 minutes there. When we went in 2000 we walked for hours along that beach and it seemed endless.
