I may be one of the few people who enjoyed Super Godzilla, and yes I still have it. I would have been all over this if it would have been available in the 90s.
It feels to me like you're playing a Heisei movie (which I find to be a good thing).

I really like how the names of the characters use the same fonts used in their respective movie posters, so each VS. screen is like an intro to a Godzilla movie!
That said... man, licensed fighting games in the 90s had this weird habit of excluding characters who you'd think would be no-brainers, and in this game's case, there's the fact that Rodan isn't a playable character despite being as iconic as Mothra and King Ghidorah and also that Jet Jaguar isn't playable despite the fact that he's probably the easiest Godzilla character you could turn into a fighting game character!
Hell, I'd main him.

Great review! I remember finding out about this game back in 2001 when the emulator craze was hitting the net. It was one of the few games that couldn't be properly emulated at the time and I had to wait a few more years until I could play it. Finally being able to was so satisfying, good times!

I really wish this game did come out. Heck I would’ve really loved something like an arcade port of it. If it actually came out on Genesis, that would be really cool as well.

Cool, my first new video! Great videos, wish I had this game as a kid, but my first Godzilla game was probably Godailla save the earth, or the first one. Been a Godzilla fan for as long as I can remember, mostly because of my mom being a fan since before I existed. Love the channel, MIB!

Im proud to say i actually have a copy of this one. I bought it for about $40 - $50 off ebay back in highschool, and played it quite a bit on my Retron 3/Retron 5 back in the day.
These days i dont get it out too much because single player mode is really brutal (im also not great at 2d fighting games). It's very beatable if youre willing to be patient and stubborn enough not to snap your controller in half, but it's incredibly frustrating sometimes. I also feel like there are some balance issues: Ghidorah has ridiculous reach, and Mothra has a really small hitbox AND can move vertically as well as horizontally.
Even so, I overall really like this game. The fights have a fun amount of strategy to them, and the graphics/music are really cool. I love all the special attacks as well!

By 1995, most publishers wanted to move away from the 16 bit era consoles with the 32/64 bit consoles on the way. So they choose not to release it in 1995.
My second favorite Godzilla game behind Save the Earth and tied with DAMM. I got a SNES emulator back in the day just to play this after reading about it on tohokingdom while searching up Save the Earth. This was kind of the game that expanded my knowledge on toho monsters. I didn't know who the hell Biollante was, nor did I know there was a Mechagodzilla pre 1993. Seeing as arcade fighters are like digital opioids for me, this was almost a dream come true, if not for it being a Japan exclusive. After years of using keyboard, I scored a physical copy last year. It's been a journey and I can go on and on about it. Thanks MIB

I just realized that the sprites of that game also appear in Godzilla Omniverse. Like for example Mechagodzilla, Ghidorah, Godzilla 60's, 90's, Anguirus and etc.

YO MIB!!!!! Ah, yes, the infamous game we could've have but never did, no thanks to Nintendo power teasing us. Anyways, I would've loved this game as a Godzilla fan and as a fighting game. Yeah it carries some of the problems from it's predecessor as just as it's hard, but for me i don't mind it. Damn shame it never got released as we got little options for godzilla games at the time but just image what happens if it actually does get released. Alas, it will be one of those "what could've been" moments, it's a shame. Great video!!!!

I love playing this game from time to time (though it's been a hot minute). GKD/DAM I think mechanically expands where GBL left off and I think plays better comparatively speaking. This style of game is better when Up is Jump instead of pressing a button, imo. Though I do wish there were some more characters, the ones that exist here are a treat--being able to detach Garuda from SMG is a fun little feature, and the Gotengo is a blast for me. ;)
