    "I did it to save you".
    In the end, this is the saddest betrayal for me. Tarkus was the first Marine to join the Commander during the Tyranid campaign, an example for everyone. And even after falling under the influece of the warp bolter, his intention was to protect his former brothers. Such is the twisted way of corruption: using the best of you against yourself.

      That is the thing about daemonic weapons, they are incredibly powerful tools. However the daemon inside is not a willing participant, nor would they ever consider partnership with a mortal. They will do everything in their power to undermine their wielder's mind to the point that it is the daemon who chooses what dies. Even if this takes millennia, creatures of the Warp have the luxury of time as they are effectively eternal.

    Tarkus' betrayal is perhaps the greatest of them all. The rest of the squad spend the mission in rage and denial, dismissing him as a mere heretic and trying to cut the feed. In the end, Tarkus hits harder not because of what he did, but who he was. Even *Avitus* looked up to him. If Tarkus could fall, what hope do the rest have?
    What hope does any of humanity have if even their first and brightest fall through no fault of their own into the jaws of Chaos?

    • @MaitreKorda
      @MaitreKorda 8 років тому +44

      Kargath Bladefist (WoD) The sword wounded him, and the lodge hand him to the witches. But he made his final decision alone, he spoke a lot about philosophy, what is right or wrong, and their future with his brothers (primarchs and marines), and it was not the sword who hurted his mind, but his past choices, his thoughts and ruminations, and acts he went through who made him. At the end, he hated himself, and he hated Erebus for what he have done, but thought it was the better thing to do, even if it was wrong.
      He was really convinced that his father was evil (without knowing it himself), and really planned to be a god. He didn't know that the future he preview was the result of his acts.
      And the lodge only concern was to save their primarch, no matter what (some of them disagree, that was the first schism between them).
      Horus was deceived, he is a victim, just like the lodge and a lot of traitors, who followed their primarch for loyalty, friend and comradeship, sense of justice.... or others reasons (Magnus -betreyed- and Alpharius/Omegon -forced to join Chaos to save the Imperium-).
      Still, some of them were just fuckers who betrayed the emperor by greed, selfishness, fear for the future/peace. As Erebus (traitor n¨°1).

    "With combat knife, boltgun, and grenade, the space marine will assail his foe!"
    "The chainsword is the will of the space marine made manifest!"
    "The space marine shall master all weapons! And all battlefields!"
    "When harried the space marine shall drive his enemies back!"
    "The space marine.... Shall never know defeat..... Only...."
    Theres just something so tragic about Tarkus quoting the codex at you even while wearing the colors of chaos. Tarkus, the best of the them, had his conviction to serve the imperium turned against him by the temptation of dark power. The very weapon the space marine is gifted to combat the forces of darkness, their determination to eradicate the foes of the imperium, became his downfall. He saw others fall to corruption before him, but in convincing himself it was the only way, he belived he could resist the abyss. He was wrong. Yet even in the clutches of evil itself he spouts lines from the codex, even then he strives to be a model space marine. A tragedy as old as time.

      The irony is that as a tactical marine sergeant, he turned to a tool instead of to his squad. The game implies he was corrupted by the Blighted Bolter, which is ridiculously powerful, but there’s no doubt that Tarkus was perfectly effective without that bolter. He failed to see the Space Marine as the ultimate weapon as indicated by the Codex, not the tool the Space Marine wields. His quoting of the Codex is as so deluded it’s almost comical. It’s the Space Marine, not the bolter, that shall never know defeat.

    • @mojewjewjew4420

      @@jonalethirenicus8334really this is because Tarkus has his brain clouded by the demon in the bolter, he thinks or is lead to to be more accurate that he is still doing his duty to the imperium, that nothing really changed. Thats why he sounds so unchanged at first glance.

      gtgoskate Yes but it was meant so the Psykers would not be put out to things like fighting with daemons or getting corrupted because of the cruelty of the battlefield.
      But these Psykers are not naturals. Every choosen man for inniation is a normal man.
      They might be strong or specially willfull, but still just man.
      After they get their geneseeds, there is a low chance that they become a psyker.
      Thats what Blood Ravens were supposed to be about. Like they turned back from the chaos or sth like this, so their geneseeds have a special connection to the warp. Such as they have a pretty big number of psykers.
      The Emperor itself is not just a great psyker, but it seems that through ten-thousand years he kept the Imperium together.
      Terra itself stands in the doorway of a warpstorm so big, that if it were to swallow Terra, a new Eye of Terror were to be ripped into the galaxy. It seems that the Emperor keeps Terra from falling into it.
      Also the Astronomican, which can only be maintained by the Emperor seems to be still working because of the Golden Throne.
      Though it is known that it worked even when the Emperor was not present, it is possible that it worked because of Malcador the Hero.
      The Inquisitors can't just kill Space Marines. This is also a kind of grey area. It is known that sometimes the Inquisitors 'dicks' or overthink things and cause exterminations. But they can't with Space Marines. They are all brothers and if it were to happen to only one, then the whole chapter were to turn against the Inquisition. Such were to happen, than a rebellion would commence, which would lead to a war inside the Imperium and between Chapters. Which would make the chaos win.
      The Inquisitors are all human except the Grey Knights. The Librarians are Space Marines. They are ten-feet tall (3meter) and they can run faster than sprinters in their armors. They also have physic abilities. If an Inquisitor were to attack a Librarian, than he would be killed on sight because of betrayal, probable corruption, and chaos mendling.
      But! Based on how strong a newly discovered natural psyker is, they sometimes kill on sight. Because of the hive worlds (human), some planet has hundreds of millions soul on it. Humans have a low chance of having psykers but with such numbers its not even rare. Each planet yields an Alpha type of psyker every two or third generation.(50-100y). Which is the rarest type under the Emperor. They are killed on sight, because they can destroy millions if in distress, or open hundreds of warpgates if they feel themself in danger. Sorrowfully they are mostly discovered after a trigger effect is innitiated making the recruiting impossible and the assassination damn hard. In these cases, sometimes even the Space Marines are deployed.

      @Kareszkoma 9 років тому +1

      gtgoskate Yeah, thats why I liked Blood Ravens so much. It's like, our Primarch might be with the chaos now, it is possible that most of our brothers are corrupt and fallen, but we still serve the Emperor! And for the side of the Emperor we will always return!
      Also I love the Lamenters too. Good guys.

    Even though he's addressing the bolter... I still get the willies... with part of me thinking that he's addressing (what was once) his fellow marines... still thinking they would work with him, still thinking that they might side with them... and the resultant coldness that happens when they deny him by saying that he is addressing the bolter, and not them.

      Kyras directly sold his life and soul away by giving that Daemon the access rites for his Psychic Hood, and Jonah was forced to watch as it hijacked his body and betrayed everything he stood for.
      But even then, he kept fighting and doing what he could to protect his brothers, even if that meant letting himself die and maybe getting dragged into the Warp with his possessor to be tormented for eternity.
      What a trooper.

If it was khorne or perhaps tzeenetch pulling the strings here, I could understand Tarkus turning so fast as to be killed on the spot like that. Why Tarkus wasn't simply turned over to a chaplain or 10 is beyond me here. He clearly still loathed chaos despite being a traitor from the beginning of the dlc. I think out of all the traitors, Tarkus might be the most likely to become a champion of Chaos Undivided. He shows an affinity with all four of the Chaos Gods, to some extent.
    Tarkus fights honorably and valiantly in the name of a cause he believes is just, like many warriors of Khorne. But Tarkus strives constantly for self-improvement; he cannot merely be good, he must be perfect. He wants to be the one to save the chapter and set things right, and if the cost is his own damnation, then so be it. Such desires are the domain of Slaanesh. He fears losing himself, losing his battle-brothers and losing his chapter, and he is willing to do anything to prevent that from happening; such fears are how the minions of Nurgle rally devotees to their cause. Tarkus follows a path of ambition, he wants to find a way out of a seemingly unwinnable scenario, and he wants to assert control over an ever-changing and chaotic universe, which is exactly what Tzeentch promises; the power to bring change and progress, and to find hope where there was none.
    All of the Chaos Gods offer raw power in exchange for your immortal soul. Tarkus would give anything, or pay any price, if the Chaos Gods would only help him save his battle-brothers. Each and every one of the Chaos Gods can exploit that in their own way. They all have their own means to turn a shining paragon into a twisted parody of their former selves.
    And Tarkus has made his choice; to save his battle-brothers, he is willing to become the embodiment of that which he hated most. And so, in time, he would likely be just like Araghast, or Eliphas. A proud, brutal, unrepentant champion of Chaos Undivided, seeking to "save" his battle-brothers by freeing them from their slavery to the False Emperor, destroying the wretched corpse sitting upon the Golden Throne, and ushering in a new golden age for humanity, backed by the Ruinous Powers. And then, if Tarkus must slay his battle-brothers to save them from their wretched fate, down to the last man, then so be it. Until he finally dies at the hands of his former brothers, his ambitions unfulfilled, his soul reduced to a plaything of the Dark Gods forever. Or he is among the "lucky" few to ascend to a Demon Prince, his will bound to the Chaos Gods, forced to enact their dark whims for all eternity; his mind, body, and soul no longer his own. Such is the fate of every Space Marine who foolishly deals with the Ruinous Powers.

When you jump back into the game with it paused you can position your mouse over the gun and then hit F10 to unpause the game, then click where your mouse should be and you should pick up the gun. Tarkus' betrayal was somewhat similar to Isador's. Isador wanted to use the Maledictum for good but it didn't matter; his desire to use it was enough for Chaos to claim him as it's own. Tarkus was damned no matter what his intentions were. Whether the person had good or evil intentions Chaos can find ways to manipulate anyone for it's own purposes. This was a pretty deep betrayal :)

    If only Tarkus actually knows how Chaos works. Just because he gave himself now does not mean the Chaos Gods will leave the Blood Ravens alone. Especially if Tzeentch needs a new pawn/slave/plaything to manipulate and finds it with the Blood Ravens, which makes Tarkus' sacrifice to "save the chapter" pointless.

      Stupid mistake, but to be fair, nobody who ever walked that moral grey area characters like Tarkus or mortarion walk are ever allowed to live long enough to actually show their true colors. Mortarion himself along with the death guard were pretty much tortured by nurgle the entire time they were in the warp, and since it was the death guard, nurgle had to break them down piece by piece. Wasn't easy for either end. Even now mortarion hates what he became, and at one point even helped out gulliman if im not mistaken.

    Tarkus betrayal was, along with Avitus', my "favorite" of all.
    Tarkus motives were emotional, we was willing to support them all along, even as a Chaos-tainted one. This is proven when he killed the Black Legion Marines behind him and quoting the codex. He even gave Thaddeus orders how to beat him, showing he doesn't want to be the traitor, but ultimately found a way to support them at it's best.
    (Reason for Avitus follows shortly.)

    This is kinda cringe-worthy when you consider Kyras let a planet get nuked to become a daemon, which is as selfish as one can get. One of the reasons Tarkus is the least-believable traitor and should stay loyal till the end.

    • @qiushuang239
      @qiushuang239 8 років тому +27

      +pihip He is still under the notion that Kyras is retreating the blood raven out of the sub sector to preserve them from fighting the black legion, where in reality he wants the whole Aurelian sub sector to be consumed by Ulkair as a tribute.

    • @pihip
      @pihip 8 років тому +9

      +Qiu Shuang It makes no sense for a loyal Chapter Master to avoid fighting Chaos Space Marines. One could say a reason could be that the Blood Ravens got their backs broken at Kaurava and so are shorthanded, but even then, that sounds fishy. Also, Kyras enlisted the aid of Ulkair to escape from the Judgment of Carrion - he worships Khorne, not Nurgle, as Retribution shows. Which is also bullshit since a Librarian worshipping Khorne makes no sense.
