  • THE BOOK OF LIFE MOVIE REACTION! Today I'll be watching a film I have never seen before The Book of Life released in 2014 for the first time. Watch the ENTIRE Movie with me? Check out: / timotheereacts
In the Mexican town of San Angel, Manolo (Diego Luna), Maria (Zoë Saldana) and Joaquin (Channing Tatum) have been friends ever since childhood. Although their lives have taken different paths -- Maria was sent to Europe, Joaquin joined the military, and Manolo studied to become a bullfighter -- one thing remains the same: Manolo and Joaquin both want to marry Maria. Little does the trio know that battling husband-and-wife deities have made a high-stakes wager on the love triangle's outcome.

seriously, if The Book of Life had more original music, it'd definitely a top tier movie. the covers are great, (I will forever yearn for a full cover of Creep) but some originals would be great.
The Apology Song (when Manolo sings to the giant bull) is a great example, because it IS an original for the movie and people love it. it is such a beautiful song, and I just dream of the masterpieces that would have been created if there were more original pieces

Fun fact, Manolo's mother was a singer in life, so Manolo gets his love of music from her and his bullfighting skills from his father. It's another way TBOL and Coco are alike, but with Coco, the trauma of having a musician family member was taken to the extreme.

This movie is definitely underrated because truthfully when it came out not many people have heard about it so I didn’t know if it was good or not that is until I did watched it and I realised it is such an amazing film I love animation and the plot and of course the romance between Manolo and Maria and I also love that Joaquin came to his senses and became a true hero. Everybody thinks that Coco and this are pretty much the same but in my opinion there a lot different because yes they both involve the Day of the Dead but there plots are different like for example Coco is more about family and the emotions were as Book of Life is about love and discovering yourself which makes two different plot lines and still two enjoyable movies. Thank you for doing this underrated gem Tim your reactions are always enjoyable 😊😁👍👍

@@justsomeguywithnomustache6245 No it wouldn't. Coco doesn't have gods, or their wager, the framing device, the love interest, the rival, the bandits, the underworld trials, ect. And The Book of Life doesn't stop to explore that aspect of the story, what music REALLY means to Menlo and taking the time to really mend the generational trauma rather than hand wave it away. You can absolutely say that the entire plot of Coco is a single subplot of The Book of Life, but that's not a condemnation of either and it means they are wildly different stories because in the act of fleshing out said subplot, Coco became about something entirely different than The Book of Life.
But for the sake of argument, let's say you're right. "They're the same". So what? How does that change my argument? Like I said, there are SO many Christmas movies that exist and a LOT of them are beat for beat the same. Why shouldn't other holidays get the same treatment?
I just genuinely HATE the trend of having to rank everything. Who cares which one is " better" if both are good? We have to gameify even watching movies instead of enjoying each one on their own merits.

This and Coco are both "Day of the Dead" movies so necessarily have some similarity just like most Christmas movies have similarity. They do have one similarity that goes beyond what you would expect just from the both featuring the same holiday. They also both feature boys from families that have been in one business for generations and expect the boy to go into that vision, the boy wants to be a guitarist, and the family does not approve. I'm curious if "child forsakes family business to be musician" is a common trope in Mexican folklore.

ah man i was so looking forward to this reaction!!! i have to laugh a little bit at your reaction to creep though, lol. fun fact about that sequence: radiohead is notoriously overprotective of creep! other properties have tried to get their permission to use it before and were denied. even HELLBOY wanted creep (the guillermo del toro movies), and radiohead said no! everybody was telling jorge, the man behind this film, that he would NEVER get radiohead rights, but he had his heart set on it! he sent radiohead an animatic of this scene as well as the script, and they loved it! they were happy someone finally wanted to use a character that really fit the song, so they gave them the rights to use it!
jorge has since joked that he used this to pressure other labels that were hesitant to give them rights to a song they wanted, lol. "oh you think you're better than radiohead? yeah, we got radiohead rights!" 😂

As a mexican, i don't really like to compare both movies, or say one is better than the other. I think both of them are pretty accurate: While Coco is about how most people (including myself) here celebrate Dia de Muertos nowadays with the music, traditions and beliefs, Book of Life is a mix of mayan culture and gods, and Catholic/Christian beliefs, because let's remember the movie takes place in 1920 Mexico, and our culture was still really influenced by the Spanish back then. They're very different but still accurate.
People may like one more than the other (i do too), but i don't think one is better than the other.

Alrhough one criticism I have of the film is that, it tries to sell Maria is independent, but also keeps making her go back and fourth, like she truly is an item to be won. I think they tried to mimic Princess Jasmine, but kinda missed. So I would say Coco is better, imo. But this movie is still good.

I grew up with this phenomenal movie and I sympathized heavily with Manolo, because yeesh!😬
He was pushed into something he didn't want to do his whole life by his father, tries so hard to win Maria over despite not being as effortlessly suave as Joaquin, and then she's taken away from him without any warning by Xibalba. But it got better because Manolo was so pure and courageous that he broke the giant sword that no one had ever been able for probably centuries, and is able to kill a massive guy with bombs all on his own!👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
This one is still a classic to me to this very day because I absolutely adore the adorable relationship between Manolo and Maria.❤🥰😍💖💗💞
His friendship with Joaquin is much smoother once the latter learns how to be a true hero.😊

Yes compared to Coco, this movie is so underrated but like people said this is possibly better than Coco. Also it would be nice if you check out some Mexican movies :Macario,Amores Perros and Y Tu Mamá También(the last 2 has Gael Garcia Bernal who voiced Hector in Coco).

I feel like unfortunately Halloween does always take the spotlight in October and then thanksgiving/Christmas takeover in November so I feel like most people who aren’t Mexican or have Hispanic roots forget about de dia de los muertos but I definitely love how coco and the book of life educate people about the holiday. I definitely hope more film production companies make more movies about this holiday since I feel like de dia de los muertos can really be celebrated be any culture who want to celebrate and remember their family members that passed

I love how movies and shows have completely different versions of The Devil.
For example, The Book Of Life has the most evilest Devil while The Cuphead Show has the Devil with the most personality.

Personally a much bigger fan of this movie. Coco went so hard on the music with the fingers and the plot. This movie went hard.. on everything! It’s sooo good!!

Both movies are great, I personally love this more but it's not a copy, the history is driven by a different purpose, this movie was about love, about loving someone else and loving what you want to do! Coco instead makes the same thing about doing what you love, but the plot is focused on why music was banned on his family. And ofc, visual elements, characters, the delivery is completely different! So both are awesome!

I like both Coco (seen 3 or 4 times) and The Book Of Life (I only seen that movie once). Seeing your reaction here on UA-cam even tho it's cut down and not the full reaction which that takes place over on your Patreon. I can defiantly say that I missed watching this movie and should watch this more often.

This is an extremely underappreciated and extremely hard to find movie. It’s no wonder It gets no real love.
I spent back when I wanted to watch it almost a month searching. The fact is that I couldn’t find it and had no access to where it actually was. When I was looking for it no streaming channel, actually had it.
But I eventually did locate a place. I think I had to rent it from iTunes if I recall, but that was a last resort.
But I did enjoy the movie.

An Spanish story with Spanish characters set up in Mexico during the Day of the Dead. It is good but if you know the background of both this and Coco the second one is way better.
