The reason why grandmama Imelda has Pepita as her spirit guide is that the spirit guide reflects the personality of the human it accompanies. And since Imelda has an extremly strong personality, this shows off in her spirit guide being a giant winged jaguar as well.

My best friend of 24 years is Mexican and actually lives in the city that Pixar used for the basis of the City of the Dead, Salamanca.
She and my grandmother were very close even though they had only directly spoken once (she's an online friend who I have never seen face to face). She's a massive chocoholic, and my grandmother would send her a box of expensive chocolates every year for her birthday.
After my grandmother passed away in 2005, she added her photo to her family's ofrenda. It's still there, 18 years later, which is very comforting to me.
Needless to say, this movie is very close to my heart for multiple reasons. 💜

This is such a sweet story and also a testament to 'found family' that we can regard as true family members to our hearts as well. After all, one of the characters in this movie got to cross over and visit because his dentist put up his picture. And quality chocolate is definitely a strong incentive of keeping someone in high regard even after their passing!

Just so you know, back in the day when there wasn't any pictures, we didn't do paintings. There is a reason for the sugar skulls that have the name of the dead written on the forehead and that comes from actually having the skull and bones. Or you made rhe sheine over their tombs and stay the night there and in some places, people still clean the bones as a sign of respect.

A small detail that almost no one notices, if you pay attention throughout the movie Hector does not wear any shoes. But in the final scenes he does. This is because of how the family's business is shoe-making, so him being barefoot symbolizes how he is not part of the family and is cast aside. Him wearing shoes at the end represents how he is now welcomed and part of the family.

few details that I really love in this movie that shows how much research they did:
Both Hector and Emelda have purple cloathing and they are the only once who have it, an early hint. In Mexican culture Purple is reserved for the heads of the family, it stands for the respect you have gained through being an elder (thats why Mirabels abuela wears purple to, she is the head or the family!)
The yellow and orange flowers that they put up every where are Marigolds it´s said that ther bright yellow/orange color and their strong wonderful sent helps guid the spirits back (here reprecented by the acctual bridge of petals)
Dante is a Xoloitzcuintle dog (xolo/ Mexican hairless dog) the black xolo´s can travel between the world or the dead and the living and can help guid you if you are lost. That´s why he was able to join Miguel. Research shows that people with dementia resopnds well to music and that her dad sang to her helped her to remember even more becuse the center the processes sound/song and music is different than the center thet processes memmory. There are studies that are still in it´s infancy on if we could help stroke/dementia and nonverbal people to comiunicate by singing what they want to say express insted of trying to verbalize it, theese studies are as of now focused on Savants with limited to no verbal skill in social settings but are able to sing and preform a song with feeling and emotional responce to it.
Through out the whole movie Hector is the only character not wearing shoes futhering the distance Emelda has taken from him, as she was a shoe maker.
In the scen at the end where they walk over the bridge Hector is wearing Shoes symbolizing his official welcome back to the family.

    • @Lupirio23

That fact about Purple is very interesting, nice detail. As well as Hector and the shoes, gotta say as many times as I have seen this I certainly did not notice at the end there huehue, mostly focused on the fact he can walk the bridge.

Being Mexican American, this movie perfectly captures my culture and preparations for El Dia De Los Muertos (The Day Of The Dead). How we decorate the ofrendas, the music, the lore behind the celebration, everything. What makes this movie so special to me is the concept of family. On my family's ofrenda, one of the pictures we put up is of my paternal grandfather Marcelino. He died when I was in 8th grade (2005) and even now in 2023, it messes me up with emotion. Every day, I wish I could see him face-to-face one last time, give him a big hug and tell him how much I love and miss him. 😢😢😢😢
Also, a slap from a sandal or chancla hurts, specifically on bare skin. That's why they're so feared in Mexican culture, especially when they're wielded by an elder.

At the end of the movie, when Miguel sings "Remember Me" to his mama Coco, she starts to remember again. Well, there's a documentary about an actual study on how familiar music can awake memories for people with various types of dementia. I saw it years ago, but I don't remember what it's called. I thought about it when you mentioned your own grandmother. Maybe you can try it with your grandmother? 😊

Great reaction to one of my favorite movies. I think the Day of the Dead is such a sweet and interesting way of remembering your dead loved ones, focusing on the happy memories instead of the sadness. I am in no way, shape, or form a kid though. Neither are all the people reacting to, and loving it. These kinds of movies (Disney, Pixar, DreamWorks, etc) are far more than just kid's movies. I always find it kinda funny when people react to certain lines or scenes, and go, "wait, what, isn't this a kid's movie?". If they weren't animated, but had the same story and characters, with live actors, noone would call them kid's movies I think. The amount of people, talent, and money involved in making movies like this is way above any "real" kid's movie. And they often deal with subjects that are very mature, and are usually filled with jokes and references that kids are too young to have been exposed to, and therefor will have a hard time understanding. And in a lot of them, there are characters who die. In short, they are movies for adults, with some elements in them that will keep kids entertained, at least for a little while. I remember when one of my nieces watched "Up" when she was little (she's 15 now), and she laughed at some of the more violent scenes, but didn't seem very interested in the movie as a whole. Up is by the way another movie I adore. Some of these "kid's movies" are some of my absolute favorite movies, regardless of genre, animated or not.
And correct me if I am wrong, but this movie isn't really Halloween themed, despite all the skeletons, the Day of the Dead is a completely different holiday, and a lot more happy and nice.

From a cultural standpoint, Coco means the world to me. The sheer respect for Mexican culture in this movie is just incredible. The music, the food, the preparations for the Day of the Dead, the culture itself is part of who I am and it's very important, as is the message of the importance of family.
Side note: The "customs agent" that Miguel and the rest of the Rivera family was talking to in the land of the dead (the one who said "Well, you're cursed") is voiced by Gabriel "Fluffy" Iglesias

Actually if you think about it his love for music and the way he is comes from mama Imelda not Hector technically because he would play the guitar and she would sing that’s what she said right and she is his blood related family Hector is by marriage.. So it actually comes from mama Imelda no?🥰 A couple of fun facts about the movie Hector through out the movie he is bare foot but at the end he has shoes officially welcoming him back to the family.. And when Ernesto says I give you my blessing the petal doesn't glow.. so he's not his family or great grandfather.. And what I also like is how you can see his sister playing the violin at the end. It shows that music is as much of an integral part of his family as shoemaking, but before Miguel nobody dared to question Imelda's and later on Elena's ban on music. Now that the ban is lifted he can find out that musical talent is in fact connecting him to his family as well while earlier he felt like the odd one out.

There's nothing wrong for kids to laugh about a non-epic death... You're the second person to believe this is a sexual allusion, I don't think it is... They think Hector did not die in an epic way : he didn't but murder, and neither by a long and uncurable disease he had to fight against, he did not die by a tragic accident, they think he just dies of eating incorrectly
Nothing sexual here, but that's very interesting to see some people (in a very Freudian way) link everything to sex
