At minimum, do a 50% overlap. A little less air pressure ( you're using an HVLP gun. High Volume Low Pressure ). That gun is made to operate as pressures lower than 40 psi. Also, an enamel catalyst ( hardener ) will work wonders with Rust-Oleum. It's a bit pricey, but we'll worth the extra cost. Amazon sells a half pint for around $30. That said, you did a good job, considering your first paint job.. much better than my first job. 👍
I did the same thing to 95 Tacoma but with a bunch of spray cans. Take your time with the prep, paint, clear coat, and buff and it will turn out better than you think. Drove for about 2 years and Dealer was impressed and took it in as a trade in. 😁
Dude from before you started I knew it was going to come out good now wet sand it and clear it who knows you might be a born painter and be in the money. Congrats!! X
In my experience, Rustoleum goes on best from a shinny/smooth perspective, with lower air pressure. The higher air pressure gives it that look you got. Also, like others said an enamel harder would make that paint hard as hell.
I would suggest that you sand the truck down with some 1000 grit and then apply clear coat on top of the paint. You might be able to sand out some if not all of the orange peel that way and the clear will look much better after the sanding. Dauntless has some very good advice and you should consider it and the respirator is a must when you are painting.
I put a minwax outdoor clear over the rust-oleum on my truck, it's been two weeks and is pretty legit. I got a vid on my channel highly recommend for a cheap paint job✌️
Great job, man. I just wish you used a better filtered mask. You are breathing in those fumes, isn't good for your lungs bro. But, great job none-the-less
Some good advise on here. RESPIRATOR RESPIRATOR RESPIRATOR. In addition to those that said to start from the top and work your way down and from the center of your vehicle out... On all your body lines, your first squirt should be along those Body Lines. Then the top and over, down the sill posts. Center hood out. And don't sweat the run...EVERY painter has left his signature. I have taken them down a panel and let them drip to the floor. For a smoother finish, you can use a mostly reducer, with a little color in it and do what's called a fog coat over the whole car using the same technique, top to bottom. This allows the paint to flow together. But be aware of signatures, spreading something so thin on. And if you are squirting a metal flake paint, it helps to stop modeling. That's where you have the light dark streaks. That helps the metal flakes in the paint flow smoother between your Strokes. Just for future reference if you happen to do a metal flake. And always have Patience. )))
Looking great! Be careful using carb cleaner unlike brake cleaner there's a oil in it that you don't want in your spray rig. Your better off using the acetone your using to thin your paint to clean your rig.
I’m about to do my work truck and was gunna use the magic tractor paint from Tractor Supply but I think you have just convinced me to use Rustoleum instead. Thanks for the video
Not bad job dude, I’ve got a 4Runner also in dire need of some paint. Did you do clear coat also or left it as is? Also got any updates on how the paints doing?
@@daves2354 You know your right about that. On my way to get groceries one day, I saw a man cutting his grass with a John Deere tractor and a brush hog. The tractor was a 1962 model and it looked like it was bran new. He told me, and I had guessed he hard to have painted that tractor with a paint spray air gun, and air compressor. Wrong. He mixed in thinner and harder in the green paint along with hardener and rolled it on his tractor. Man, the way it came out, so beautifully done, you could swear he spray painted it, but didn't! He rolled it on the tractor. Hey! If it works, do it!!
"one thing I didn't get was a respirator, but I don't think I'll need it". Yep sounds like a good plan, painting in an enclosed garage! Check!🤷 I would at least wear a particulate mask and leave the door open.
New drinking game. U will get drunk af. Watch this video and everytime he says lets see where we go or he mentions the mixing ratio u gotta take a drink.
I did a rustoleum paint job but I accidentally got oil based so it took even longer to dry but it came out with some texture but I didn’t care, which is why I rolled the paint on 🤣
Turned out really good. Only thing that really bugged me was the audio in your video. If you ever need a lesson on how to read audio when editing video shoot me a message. It’s really offputting when I’m watching the video and then a random song starts blasting my speaker.
Quit snapping the kinks outta that hose. It flick dirt and dust everywhere. ALWAYS start painting from top to bottom so the dust overspray gets melted into the paint as you get lower and lower. Shooting the top last, drops overspray on the lower panels that'll give you a pebble texture..... unless that is what you wanted.
Way to ruin a perfectly good video with music. Even if that was my favorite soundtrack ever, having to turn the volume down to 3% of what was a comfortable listening volume for when you were talking is just annoying.
I used 3 to one ratio. Was way too thick. Shot out like batter. Orange peeled like your truck. I stopped and added acetone to my mixture. The acetone melted the orange peel and it layed flat. Your music mix level is too high too for late night viewing.
Please guy like others said get a RESPIRATOR! I cannot imagine how many toxins that you inhaled during this spray, amazon has ones for VOC for like $25 if its a money thing. I just sprayed the same rustoleum with zero orange peel. Used same gun, set air at 25psi, used mineral spirits at 3-1 ratio rather than acetone and if i recall set fluid flow @ 1 3/4 turns open from full closed.
Just some friendly advice :
Respirator !!
Loose the table, tires, wheels
Move truck into garage more
Plastic on floor, wet floor
Run air hose over right shoulder,
continue down your back thru your

Paint starting highest point
Left to right, top to bottom
15-20 minutes flash increments
between coats
hardener ? catalyst ? more thinner
less psi

Whats your measure ratios? For 20oz
I love the honesty in the video straight up and forward that's a thumbs up for me...
Some 1000 grit sand paper and some good polishing compound will make it look like glass

Great video, nice job on paint. Just the right amount of details not overloaded info.
To cut the orange peel use mineral spirits instead of thinner.. allows the rust oleum to level better than using thinner
For what it is, I love it! Great job.
Next time use thinner and enamel hardener and you will get much better results and alot less orange peel in your paint.
derf yerots how much thinner and enamel do you recommend
Thanks, enjoyed the singing chipmunks too.

What type of compressor are you using? Nice job on the garage do it yourself paint job.
Came out great. I want to get one of these rigs and spray the Rhino liner type paint. Just going to take it through the bush anyway! Keep em Rolling!!
Still better than MAACO and def more cost efficient, NICE!

For some reason offroad SUV's look the best with rustoleum paint.
Hell yea. I can't justify spending more money on something that's gonna get dinged and scratched.
Great job how did the paint last and did you clear coat it
You could with a little work, salvage that paint and make it slick. Wet sand and polish with a good polisher and It will make that paint look great!

No clear. Will upload a video soon
Good job on the paint & great job on the video! Subscribed!
Honestly if u left it with the tan primer the hole truck woulda be sick
Rustoleum takes at least 2 weeks to cure. Looked great from the back of the bus! Best regards!
Nice job dude
Thank you for your very very first video
Bro for your first time I think it’s good. I like the tires on it what size and wheels are they?
What was your prep before the paint job, as far as the sanding and primer goes? Stoked on your finished product!
I wanted to ask you actually how much paint did it take to finish the whole job on the 4Runner? Thank you 👍😎🙏
Im honestly so jealous you got a garage lmao. I seriously wanna try this but a roller job is realistically my only choice right now
If you have the paint thinned sufficiently even the rolled on rustoleum paint jobs can be of surprisingly good quality

is this stuff chemical resistant like if gas and acetone get on it it wont discolor?
Certainly brings 1st gen bang up to date!
Yo if that’s really your first attempt at spraying a car, much less a spray gun, you’re a gah damn natural bro.

Looks good. I. Using g the cheapy harbor freight electric sprayer
Did it work? how did you do it?
would you recommend other doing it with that method if it nothing professional?

That music was awful but enjoyed watching with it muted.
Yes, this music sucked bad.
Nice...makes a Earl Schieb paint job seem expensive!
the most important thing, respirator you said you dont think you need it
What size compressor did you use?
Okay; been a while; how has it held up over time?
Looks good man!
Not bad. I think you should paint the jams too.
I applaud your efforts, but orange peel texture can be avoided by spraying slower and letting the paint flow

any updates on the paint job? how has it held up over the years?
Wet sand with 2000 grit sandpaper to remove the orange peel, and add a clear coat!
Great job
Thanks!

I commented on ur vid some time ago but i failed to ask. How much paint did actually use on it? End results look great 👍
About 2 quarts only
@@rescuegarage7602 no kidding thx i appreciate you getting back to me. Did you do anything other mods to it?

How's it look now a year later?
How did the end result turn out, thinking about doing this to my truck!
How did the paint hold up?

I would suggest using a paint respirator, cartridge style. Don’t want paint in your lungs bro
You know you are the dude.....dude
What's the minimum size gallon compressor you recommend for that spray gun?
What psi did you run your gun at is it a low pressure sprayer i wonder if you went with a high pressure one would you of got less orange peel
About 45 if I remember correctly
how minutes do you wait between coats?

I don’t need no stinking respirator. Like I always say, Safety Third. And for haters, it’s a trail rig.
Thar's the color i used, but i did a roller job.....looks great
