  • I guess it was inevitable that I would do some more Pantera covers and specifically of songs from Vulgar Display of Power. Whether this was a good idea or not, well, you be the judge.
Anyway. Mouth for War was the first Pantera song I ever heard some time in 1992, I’d say about 6 months after the album had come out. I had never heard anything like it. Ever. I didn’t even know if I liked it, and certainly my teenage mind was ill-equipped to deal with the album as a whole. So I’d listen to it in bits and pieces and it eventually became one of my all time favourite metal albums. Top 5, definitely.
Vulgar is a very strong record but some songs are, shall we say, over played. I don’t think I’ll miss Walk if I never hear it again. But in all the time I’ve spent listening to this album, I don’t think I’ve ever skipped Mouth for War. It’s undeniably awesome from start to finish and my all time favourite Pantera song.
So what’s with this cover then? I literally put this arrangement together in about 15 minutes, although it took a couple of hours of playing with the different parts before I was able to record it even at this shitty level. But the whole idea behind these covers, from the very beginning, was “don’t overthink it, just do it” and I’ve tried to adhere to that maxim. If that’s what it is. I’m not making excuses here. I could spend hours, days and weeks and make it fairly smooth. But I choose not to. The video performance is 100% mimed and not very well.
“Promise you won’t defile any more Pantera songs?!?!”
No, I won’t. Promise, that is. There will be more. Oh, yes. I just don't know when...
