  • Former USA National Boxing Team Member, FightCamp Co-Founder & Trainer Tommy Duquette breaks down step by step how to throw an uppercut to the body and the head on a vertically shaped heavy bag.
If you're a beginner boxer or experienced and wanting to improve your form, take Tommy's tips and apply them to your boxing training and workouts. Practice the uppercut movement slowly and deliberately in front of a mirror so you can create that mental model of what it's supposed to look like when throwing on the bag.
Learn how to throw an uppercut from a long-range so you can have power, but also learn how to throw an uppercut from a short-range to set up greater combinations. Remember, start in a neutral stance so all your power can be generated through your hips.
Here's how to uppercut a heavy bag to the head:
Step 1 - Scope out the bag, where an opponent (your size) would match at head level on the punching bag.
Step 2 - When throwing the rear uppercut, open up your arm at a 90 degree angle while turning your foot and twisting your hips driving your uppercut through the bag, your fist should be landing on the bag at a 45 degree angle with your fist knuckles down right at head level on the heavy bag.
Step 3 - For the lead uppercut, it's the same motion. Open up your arm at a 90 degree angle while turning your foot and twisting your hips driving your uppercut through the bag, your fist should be landing on the bag at a 45 degree angle with your fist knuckles down.
Step 4 - Repeat working your uppercuts to the head on a heavy bag by adding it into different combinations. Practice your punches slowly and methodically to build the proper muscle memory.

Decent video but I would’ve really liked to see at least one run through of these punches in real speed to see how it’ll actually look when being done on the heavy bag.

This video should be required on the prospect path. I came looking for it after the first uppercut workout.

What are your thoughts on the attachment to the bag that allows for solid head level uppercuts? I’ve seen the rings for heavy bags. Are there any for the Fight Camp foam bags?

can you show these at speed? i feel like these head-level uppercuts have the greatest likelihood of any punches to injure wrists, because of the odd angle at contact. should you land these with power?

Learn to tighten your wrist before any punch. Practice a tight wrist with hooks before uCuts

You think so? What makes people say things like this? Do you know how to use Google? What specifically about the instruction do you disagree with?

I don’t doubt he knows what he’s talking about, but throwing an uppercut on a heavy bag isn’t a real thing. There’s no pad facing down, which would give you a flush contact point. Your elbow should be bent roughly at 90 degrees on an uppercut, his is far closer to near full extension.
His “body uppercut” is what I teach as just a body shot, and the technique he demonstrates here is fine, but I wouldn’t use that terminology as it can be misleading. Uppercuts on a teardrop bag, focus mitts or Thai pads can be done all day, but not on a traditional heavy bag. Your better off focusing on lower hooks or the bodyshot he’s showing here. I’ll post a video explaining the difference on my page.
