Tony my name is Tony. You’re awesome. I’m 43 and just started boxing and then the pandemic. Long and short of it all- I have a great boxing gym in my garage that i out togetherand you’re my new coach. I watch a video, do my pushes ups, jump rope, etc., shadow boxing rounds, and the try out what you teach me on the heavy bag for my gloved rounds. Peace and blessings, Fr. Tony
I tell my students that when they throw the uppercut, the elbow comes from the place the bellybutton occupied prior to turning the hip so that the punch comes right from the centerline straight up the body. I notice people often have the tendency to throw the uppercut from the side instead of straight up the middle, then they sometimes over compensate by not throwing it perpendicular, but as a hook. I hope I described this well enough. What is your thought on this, Champ?
I teach the centerline to my students as well. Every day I see people practicing hitting the elbows instead of separating centerline and flanks. For the uppercut to the solar plexus, I make them observe the shirt of the opponent and target the logo or a certain letter. Definitely using the long uppercut when stepping back as the opponent is keen to pounce.

Great video no one ever does uppercut videos 👍,this is the punch I’ve been hit with the most !!!,it’s a real stunner to shakes you up lol,but it is a great punch defensively, although Joshua makes it nasty attacking with it,
Tony Jeffries several years back. Job, marriage and family took most of my time. But now my kids are now old enough to lace up some gloves and and start learning. I've shown them some of your vids too to help them out. But you Sir have motivated me to keep punching! That and watching some Rocky movies help too lol 😂. But you Sir are the real deal. Thanks and keep them vids coming.
Informative video. Please do a video on uppercut defense, or is the best way what you talked about towards the end of the video - closing your guard ? I've seen some coaches advocate catching the uppercut with either the same hand or opposite hand, but honestly it seems difficult to react that quickly at close range.
Always enjoy your vids Tony. When I'm in close I like to skim (lightly tap) the ribs around the side as I come up through the middle. I do it with my left (leading hand) and it works so well for opening the guard. It has worked well on intermediate and pro fighters and its easy to practice on a bag.
The punch that messed up my shoulder elbow and wrist. Stupid cheap glove is to blame. I once had a crazy right hand. Now I can barely get any speed or feel comfortable throwing any serious power with it. Great explanation of these powerful punches 🙏✌
Always love your videos man, very clear and amazingly helpful I have a request I’m 37 and a couple years ago I was 256 in a bad way so I finally said fuck this Now I walk around at 185-190 and and I’m in the best shape I’ve ever been in. But now my shoulder is giving me major issues One of the main sources of exercise for me is hitting my heavy bag, I do probably ten 3min rounds at least 5 days a week For the last few months my left shoulder had been feeling all jacked and I really notice it when I throw the left hook. I’m pretty confident in my form but I’m not a boxer by any means, so for all I know I’m throwing it all wrong. If there was a way for you to get a video out showing very clearly like you do, exactly how each part of your body should move when your throwing your jab, or hook or whatever, I’m sure I’m not the only one who would benefit from that! I’ve experimented with my 1-2 as well, it feels natural to me to sort of throw each punch in 2 motions, like I quickly flick my shoulder out followed by the rest of the punch. But now, when I do that it jars my shoulder. So I keep everything really stiff and move my hips and shoulder and throw the punch as one single unit (hard to explain). And it feels more powerful and doesn’t hurt my shoulder as much, but it tends to feel a little slower If you can give me clarity so i at least know if I’m doing it wrong or if I’m just feeling my age haha that’d be amazing!
