Protection from automation? Really wages make sense but as a 26 year union member I think that is a bridge to far. Autoworkers tried this approach and it failed miserably
It’s been less than 24 hrs so far, and local bars in my neighborhood are already preparing to go out of business. They aren’t getting anymore shipments.
Air traffic controllers had a no strike clause in their contract. This isn’t the same thing. You’re just gonna have to deal with shortages and pay more for your wants.
77% pay raise spread over six-year period. It is not much. Many of us are only getting a 5% raise hike over a 3-year period. If they get that, then all other unions need that hike as well.
Do you know their base salary? And do you know they also don't want automation? 😂😂😂😂 If Chinese can have fully automated ports, so does US in the future.
Turning down a 38% raise and demanding a 77% raise is not just and reasonable; it's greedy and wrong; in my opinion. And they will look pathetic if they do not deliver to the millions of hurricane victims from the past few days
Oversea companies can pay the 77% they make billions on billions on America. From COVID to inflation you don't see these companies lowering there prices to ship over sea.port works deserve there raise. 77% over six year is not a lot.
3PL worker, i see what the carriers do with their price gouging daily...good for the ILA. Foreign owned Steam lines are already planning to charge extra $1500 per container because of the strike. On top of $1000 extra because of the houthis and another $700 because its close to xmas. They can afford to pay whats being asked and then some.
Welcome to capitalist-driven society. Although I heard the CEO of some Shipping Container Co last year, gave himself $4billion bonus, due to excessive profits in the year.
That's what the west coast did and they got automated... you are silly to think people won't protect their self interest and when the company you work for makes billions off your labor and without you they cannot make due, they have no choice put to pay up. Just like the price grouging they do now, they do it because they can. They had months to resolve this before the hurricane. If you truly care about the victims of the hurricane, you're energy should be put to blame on the politicians sending out money to other countries vs our very own. Plus our gov should be mobilizing our military to rescue and provide aid to our people. Blaming workers is a zero sum game.
Biden and dems would look bad if they forced unions back to work instead of allowing a strike. The irony is that covid stoppage happened during trump. Now labor stoppage happens during biden

Those robotic armatures(?)... Each one of those things are staffed with an actual human, yes? So that there's a real human being there to operate the thing (even if it's just enough to safely stop it temporarily, if something goes wrong). Because, y'know, ...those self-driving cars *never* get into catastrophic accidents when there isn't a (sober and awake) human behind the wheel. To take over when something goes wrong, eh. *(That, by the way, was sarcasm. ...Just sayin'.) So, presuming that there's at least one Union-member human being for each robotic arm, how *many* humans are hired for that purpose (safety? prevention of catastrophic loss of time and equipment?)? Could that number be negotiated? Yknow, to add personnel in a meaningful way (that would add/assist the work being done)? Just asking. Owen Jay Korman Philadelphia, PA
I read their current contract provides them $147,000 per year, plus no cost health care and $30,000 contribution to their pension. At a 77% increase they would be looking at a package of over $250,000 a year....not bad for a high school education.
They’ll break that 45 day record
Unfortunately, you’re probably right- and it’s already destroying businesses in my neighborhood, because no more shipments are coming in.
