So when Lone Star is told to use the Swartz he being told to use the "Dark side." When Yogurt disappears after telling Lone Star that he's a prince and calls out, "what a world, what a world" that's a parody of the Wicked Witch of the West death in the WIZARD OF OZ when Dorothy throws water on her. Barf is a word in the US which means to throw up. Colonel Sanders is a spoof of Kentucky Fried Chicken. The man that started Kentucky Fried Chicken was called Colonel Sanders, his business name. When the 4 are out in the desert at night and Princess Vespa asks Lone Starr what planet he's from and he says, "Somewhere in the Ford Galaxy," Lone Starr is spoofing a car. I´m so glad when you react to movies from my childhood/ teenage years, movies from the70´s/80´s. I feel like I´m watching them for the first time with friends. To this day, I still listen to the song that plays at 9:29 - Heatstrings by Berlin - and I still get emotional. I know there a lot of references to things that were happening back then that you don´t get. Also, this movie targets mainly Gen Xers. their humor, their expectations, their anxieties, their worries and sensibility. And there is the language barrier, too. But you manage to react very well. I love your chemistry, and your ability to make me laugh. Keep up the good work and thank you for making my day a little better.
I have seen this movie many times, and I remember Max Headroom but never made the connection of Vinnie being a parody of Max, but it makes sense. Thinking about it now
M.H. was an actor. The technology didn't exist to make such an AI character at the time. They allude to it in Back to the Future movie in the "Cafe 80's."
@@treetopjones737 Of course. Matt Frewer was the actor that played Max Headroom, and of course the technology didn't exist then. Max Headroom was "computer generated". Hence my comment that he was AI before there was AI.
Star Wars was retitled Episode 4: A New Hope in 1979 when Star Wars was re-released in theaters in preparation for episode 5 coming out the following year.
Check out the very first Star Wars parody from 1978 called Hardware Wars. It's like 16 mins long w/ a budget of $2000. Yeah its cheap and silly and don't expect something great from it, but it's a fun watch (not worth a reaction) for those who like silliness in a parody movie. also try Pitch meeting skits. Over 300 and counting. (usually about 6-8 min sketches on the more well-known movies and some TV shows (like GOT, etc.). They do some Star Wars skits (I think), but John Wick is popular. (Note heavy spoilers as that's the content of a Pitch Meeting - spoilers. so watch the movie/show first before watching the Pitch Meeting). (Titles are listed by movie then PM. Example: John Wick Pitch Meeting).
Barf's costume had three operators, with one offscreen stage hand working the ears, and another the tail, and John Candy himself doing the rest. This means when Barf tells the waitress at the diner that his tail has a mind of it's own, its literally true. Plus, the Jabba puppet needed three operatirs and Brooks didn't want to be outdone.
It also makes fun of "Planet of the Apes", "Alien", and others. In the initial encounter in the temple where they meet Yogurt, it is parodying "The Wizard of OZ". Lastly, the drums were parodying the song "Also Sprach Zarathustra" from "2001: A Space Odyssey" (by Strauss).
The never ending ship was a tribute to the movie „Alien“. Other movies/shows used in this are: The Wizard of Oz, Indiana Jones-Raiders of the Lost Ark, Planet of the Apes(original release), Star Wars and Star Trek(original tv series). I‘m sure there‘s at least one more but it slips my mind………
This movie was approved by George Lucas, he even let them use his props department on 2 conditions 1 the main character of lone star couldn't look like Han Solo that's why he looks like Indiana jones and 2 they couldn't make merchandise.
I generally agree with you when it comes to Carrey, but you should check out "The Truman Show" or "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind". I really enjoyed him in both.
"that's all we need, a Druish princess" .... "that's funny, she doesn't look Druish" ..... (a JEWISH princess) is the joke !! .... one of the GREATEST lines EVER !!
Prince Valium is modeled after a cartoon character that started in the 1930’s called Prince Valiant In The Days of King Arthur and is still being done in a few papers today. Valium is a narcotic mood modifier and sleep aid from the late 1950’s into the sixties that was used so much it was called mother’s little helper. When it was realized the problems it caused (apparently it’s very addictive) the government tightened up who could get it. One of the most common results from taking it is sleepiness. That’s why Prince Valium is always yawning.
I think these folks would really appreciate The Producers and Silent Movie...I would love to see them react to those...maybe even before they react to Young Frankenstein.😁
i like Star Wars because i was born in 1974. i am exactly the intended audience for Star Wars. it was aimed at boys my age. it was intended for children. if you look at them as movies for children that hopefully adults can enjoy as well, then they are very well done.
Spaceballs the Documentary ua-cam.com/video/nPf4PKGXGe4/v-deo.html Mel Brooks breaks the 4th wall in a lot of his movies. He literally breaks a wall in Blazing Saddles. if you want sillier, watch Silent Movie (1976). The only spoken word is by a mime.
Dot Matrix refers to a printing technology of the time that actually used pins arranged in a rectangular matrix, with certain pins pushing forward through an inked ribbon make a dot on a piece of paoer - the dots combined formed a letter, number, or symbol. Thus, a dot matrix printer. They are rare today but were very common when the movie was made.
Thanks, Lucy, for telling it like it is: This movie is NOT funny. A handful of jokes work, but most are terrible and the actors are mostly wasted (only Rick Moranis manages to eke out some humor). If you want top tier Mel Brooks, you're looking for Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, and The Producers. The rest of his body of work features far too much dreck, Brooks doing a weak impersonation of himself.
The original trilogy did *not* have chapter numbers until they re-released in "special edition" - they were added because Lucas was preparing to start the prequel trilogy and wanted to have a way to keep the movies in order. Lucas himself actually advocates watching the movies in chapter order rather than release order, but he has a very unhealthy adoration of the prequel trilogy.
As a Star Wars fan (back then)..seeing this in a packed theater was the funniest thing, ever. Just that opening shot of the ludicrously long spaceship had us rolling on the floor and it got better from there. Oh..and the guy who does the sound effects reminds you of Police Academy, because it's the same guy (Michael Winslow..who actually does these kinds of sound effects as a comedy act on stage)
just so you know because I think you missed it a lot of the jokes are jewish coated Druish Princess is basically Jewish American Princess the Schwartz instead of the force Schwartz is a jewish last name and the noise job thing is a lot of jewish girls get them and there are several more jokes
I love this movie, but I also love Star Wars. If you aren't really into Star Wars then this usually won't be as entertaining and sometimes the humor is a little too on the nose. But everyone is allowed to have their own opinions and like/dislike what they choose. At least you gave it a try and if the humor wasn't right for you then that's perfectly fine. I still enjoyed your reaction and honesty.
Neat facts. The radar operator was in Police Academy as the sound guy and the black guy in the desert with the hair pick who didn't find s..t! Played Tuvok on Star Trek Voyager and is still proud of thw role
Spaceballs is not my favorite Mel Brooks movie. I think Lucy will like Young Frankenstein. My favorite gag from Spaceballs is the headphones thing. I am glad Lucy laughed at that. Great minds think alike. I may have to subscribe to your Patreon to see your reactions to Breaking Bad.
She was like "now her ridiculous hairstyle makes sense" 😂 She is really loving Breaking Bad so far (1st season) I would like to start editing it to UA-cam but not sure when I'll get the time though
"Colonel Sanders" - iconic KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) front man. Dot Matrix - this was a type of computer printer before ink jet and laser printers. "Snotty" instead of "Scotty" - from Star Trek (as is beaming).
Completely agree that the casting and acting just weren't the best, although Bill Pullman (Lonestar) was much better in some later movies, especially Independence Day. I'm not a fan of Jim Carrey comedies, but he's great in the more dramatic movie, The Majestic, set during the "McCarthy Era" of US history. Congress was investigating people for any hint of communist ties and treating it as a major crime. Just being accused could get you blackballed, which is part of what the movie is about. Really under rated story. You'll find that Blazing Saddles has both more humor and yet more depth than Spaceballs.
Likely it's both. Mel Brooks is a clever, economical comedy writer who is happy to get two jokes for the price of one. A joke about bankruptcy and a joke on Star Wars Episode numbering.
I love Star Wars to the extreme. I grew up reading all the extended universe books, and collected a lot of Star Wars memorabilia. And I absolutely LOVE Spaceballs. Also, I'm surprised you guys didn't say anything about the sleepy prince's name being Valium.
This movie has non-stop jokes. The wife just didn't understand most of them because she hadn't seen the movies that this is a parody of. It's a pity because this is one of the funniest movies ever made!
Great Reaction....... (Standard Comments, So some Might have already been mentioned)...... George Lucas and Mel Brooks are Great Firends..... When Mel Told George about his movie idea, George gave Mel full access to ILM for the special Effects, The only Condiditions were "No Merchandise" (No Competition for Star Wars) and the lead could not look like Han Solo (So Mel Dressed him as Indiana Jones)..... Dot Matrix was an early type of printer for home computers, She is voiced by comedian Joan Rivers..... Vespa is a classic european Scooter, Prince Valium, Valium is a drug that makes ya sleepy, he is styled after the old Comic Strip "Prince Valiant" set in medevil times.... The Radar Guy is Michael Winslow who is best known as Larvell Jones from the Police Academy Movies.... and Yes, He makes all those sounds...... "Let's take a 5 minute break, Smoke 'em if ya got em"....... The spaceballs do not appear on screen for 5 minutes........ Mel Brooks like to play multiple roles in his movies... Dark Helmet playing with the dolls was totally unscripted.... They just gave Rick the dolls and let him Improv/FreeStyle........ "May the Swartz be with you" was the slogan of Mel Brooks' Lawyer who was named Schwartz...... John Hurt actually reprized his role for the Aien diner scene.... The Alien Singing "Ole Rag-Time Gal" is a through back to a cartoon, Guy had a Singing frog that would sing when they were alone, "He only took 248 Spacebucks, for Lunch, Gas and Tolls" is a through back to the 1934 Movie "It Happened One Night"...... Planet of the Apes (1968), - Mel Brooks Movie..... What is this Fourth Wall you speak of??
Great reaction! Since your girlfriend has an eye for detail, I would bet she would love a movie with very little dialogue, mostly sight gags with a few sound accents to tickle your ribs. Give "Mr. Hulot's Holiday" (1953) a try! It is available in original French, or English. The premise, as stated at the opening, says not to look for any story as this is a vacation, just observe the people and see how many types you recognize. Enjoy! P.S. Actor John Lithgow said it is probably the funniest movie he had ever seen!
You can't say the helmet served no purpose... It literally performed the purpose of a helmet when spaceball One stopped from ludicrous speed and dark helmet did not die.
A good chunk of the jokes were on things from the 1980s. So things like the dot matrix printers, the twin gum girls, etc. The best Mel Brooks movie is Blazzing Saddles. Hope you all check it out.
I highly recommend the all-time classic “Planet of The Apes” (1968). It is a groundbreaking film in terms of costumes and makeup, and the story is riveting. It is loosely based on the 1963 novel by Pierre Boulle, who also wrote “The Bridge over the River Kwai”. Starring Charlton Heston, Roddy McDowell, Kim Hunter and Maurice Evans, it is a wonderful suspense sci-fi drama.
Please, please react to the movie Ruthless People. The humor is absolutely what you enjoy: sarcastic, witty, and sometimes even vicious. No animals are harmed in this movie - they actually... no spoilers!!
@@ptthatswhatshesaid and just re-watched it and there's probably more nudity than UA-cam would permit. Maybe an animated movie like Despicable Me or Megamind. More geared towards adults and hysterical.

Yes, star wars fans love this movie....wife looks even more beautiful with her hair down! 😍 With her hair down and the watchcap and sweater, she reminds me of Alanis Morisette, the famous Canadian (now dual citizenship USA/Canadian but she was born in Canada) singer, in the music video to "Ironic"!! It came out in 1995, during my senior year of high school! 🙂Is her watchcap made of wool? Those are super warm and make you feel hot indoors so perhaps not. I definitely suggest a wool one; they issued us wool ones in the US Navy. 🙂 You guys should definitely start watching Star Trek...personally I like Star Trek better than Star Wars, although I like both. Star Trek is a long journey though. There are 12 TV series, starting 1966, and they are still coming out with new ones...."Starfleet Academy" is a new series coming out that is part of Star Trek...and there are 13 movies, with one more to be released soon! 🙂

How very dare you! I normally give you guys a lot of leeway, but don't you dare blame Mel Brooks or John Candy for you not liking it. They aren't just comedy legends, they're like the 1% of comedy legends. 98% of the references are from Star Wars and Empire. There's like 1 Trek joke (based on the 1 thing about Star Trek everyone on the planet knows), 1 Alien joke and 1 Planet of the Apes joke. The very fact Brooks got John Hurt to film that scene from Alien again makes the whole movie 10% funnier. The only things funnier than this movie are The Producers (original) and Blazing Saddles. With Young Frankenstein tying for 3rd.
they are making a sequel to Spaceballs but havent come up with a title for it yet I still like the one that Rick Moranis suggested " Spaceballs 3 the search for spaceballs2"

Thank you so much 🤗 we are glad you can have fun with us, we love reacting to these movies
Pizza the Hutt's sidekick is based on an MTV character from the early '80s called Max Headroom. He was basically AI before there was AI.
I have seen this movie many times, and I remember Max Headroom but never made the connection of Vinnie being a parody of Max, but it makes sense. Thinking about it now
Thank you 🙏🏻 had no idea about that reference
M.H. was an actor.
The opening 'Chapter 11' is a joke from American tax code, filing for bankruptcy is chapter 11
Lucy's face when the virgin alarm went off 😅 ♥
The name Dot Matrix is a joke lost on younger viewers. Dot Matrix was a style of printing back in the day.
Yes, that one I had no idea about! 😅
I love the Prince Valium joke. Always sleepy because Valium is a sedative. Saying Prince Valium is a pill. 😂
The headphone hair buns were the best part
I agree with you, she has not seen many movies with him I think
Lucy being grossed out by Pizza the Hutt was definitely the highlight of this reaction 😂😂😂
"that's all we need, a Druish princess" .... "that's funny, she doesn't look Druish" ..... (a JEWISH princess) is the joke !! .... one of the GREATEST lines EVER !!
Spaceballs is considered the fourth movie in the original trilogy 🤣
I am a star wars fan, and I adore this movie. Then again, I love deadpan and sarcastic comedy, so that was right up my alley.
Knowing _Star Wars_ helps, but this movie still requires a lot of esoteric knowledge of older movies, as well as American and Jewish culture.
This is your first Mel Brooks movie??? What?!?!? Ok, you need to see the Funniest Movie Ever, Young Frankenstein
I think these folks would really appreciate The Producers and Silent Movie...I would love to see them react to those...maybe even before they react to Young Frankenstein.😁
@@iKvetch558 Franz Liebkind: I agree that my hit Broadway play, "Springtime For Hitler" outranks the others.;)
@ Yes...these two would love to learn of his wonderful painting skills...I am sure of it! 😁
Seems that there are a lot of movies to discover! We never saw any of those 😅
i like Star Wars because i was born in 1974. i am exactly the intended audience for Star Wars. it was aimed at boys my age. it was intended for children. if you look at them as movies for children that hopefully adults can enjoy as well, then they are very well done.
You need to see Carey in "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" -- a completely different kind of acting for him. And, it is an EXCELLENT movie.
I'm a Star Wars fan and I LOVE Spaceballs!!!
She was like "now her ridiculous hairstyle makes sense" 😂
She is really loving Breaking Bad so far (1st season)
I would like to start editing it to UA-cam but not sure when I'll get the time though
The actor for Prince Valium was the neighbor husband on Married With Children
Dark Helmet is a entirely a penus joke. The ty has circles and hangs between them and just look at the shape of the helmet.
The Chapter 11 joke isn't that it's a lot of chapters. But, that in the USA, the laws dealing with bankruptcy are listed as Chapter 11.
Specifically reorganization bankruptcy, in which not all assets are required to be liquidated.
Also, I'm surprised you guys didn't say anything about the sleepy prince's name being Valium.
they is a Spaceballs 2 currently in the works right now
13:53 it is the guy from Police Acedemy.
Micheal Winslow is the name of the actor playing the Radar operator
Oh ok, I really wasn't sure about that since I only watched the Police Academy movies when I was a kid
I LOVE your watch! are you Portuguese?
Hey there, thanks ! ☺️ yes, we’re Portuguese 🇵🇹
@@ptthatswhatshesaid cool and thanks :)
This movie has non-stop jokes. The wife just didn't understand most of them because she hadn't seen the movies that this is a parody of. It's a pity because this is one of the funniest movies ever made!
Valium is a prescrition drug. Its a muscle relaxer and makes you quite sleep. So Prince Valium is always sleepy.
Yeah, that one we got! 😂 Love the name "Prince Valium"
star wars fan, spacefalls fan, star trek fan, galaxy quest fan.. sci-fi and comedy all the way baby
👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
Yay! Just arrived, looking forward to your cool and unusual reactions.
Great couple and beautiful friendship.
Vespa is a classic european Scooter,
Prince Valium, Valium is a drug that makes ya sleepy, he is styled after the old Comic Strip "Prince Valiant" set in medevil times....
The Alien Singing "Ole Rag-Time Gal" is a through back to a cartoon, Guy had a Singing frog that would sing when they were alone,
"He only took 248 Spacebucks, for Lunch, Gas and Tolls" is a through back to the 1934 Movie "It Happened One Night"......
Planet of the Apes (1968),
- Mel Brooks Movie.....
The name is 'One Froggy Evening'
@@MiLikesVids I made no mention of the "Alien" scene with Michigan J. Frog. I think you replied to the wrong person. But thaks anyway!
@ Indeed, oops.
May The Schwartz Be With YOU!
Definitely need to watch “Police Academy”, “Blazing Saddles”, “History of the World Part I”, “Young Frankenstein”
Lonestar is the name of a franchise steakhouse, and he's being pursued by a gangster named for a franchise pizza restaurant.
welp gonna stop what im doing and watch this now thanks guys :)
im sorry people are weird about star wars and just in general really thanks for the videos
Thank you! Hope you enjoy 🤗
And the Plastic Surgeon Nurse is same actress who played thw main Ship Captain in Starship Troopers
The first one IS episode 4 !
fun fact Rick Marnis playing with his Dolls was not scripted
I highly recommend the all-time classic “Planet of The Apes” (1968). It is a groundbreaking film in terms of costumes and makeup, and the story is riveting. It is loosely based on the 1963 novel by Pierre Boulle, who also wrote “The Bridge over the River Kwai”.
Starring Charlton Heston, Roddy McDowell, Kim Hunter and Maurice Evans, it is a wonderful suspense sci-fi drama.
Mel Brooks said Blazing Saddles was his funniest movie, and Young Frankenstein was his best.
Please, please react to the movie Ruthless People. The humor is absolutely what you enjoy: sarcastic, witty, and sometimes even vicious. No animals are harmed in this movie - they actually... no spoilers!!
I checked out the premiss, and it sounds great! 😂😂
@ptthatswhatshesaid It's hilarious, even if you don't react to it, I think you'd both enjoy it together.
@@ptthatswhatshesaid and just re-watched it and there's probably more nudity than UA-cam would permit. Maybe an animated movie like Despicable Me or Megamind. More geared towards adults and hysterical.
"SpaceBalls": Mel brooks takes down the Space Opera/Fantasy genre. Did you notice that the "President Skroob Salute" is a rude gesture?') Mel Brooks began with this in 1967: ua-cam.com/video/ovCf9VRLnDY/v-deo.html
Your first Mel Brooks film? Great. This film will introduce you to all of his films that came before Spaceballs.
That is the same guy from Police Academy. His name is Michael Winslow.
"How dare you say that of Dark Helmet."😀
Yes, star wars fans love this movie....wife looks even more beautiful with her hair down! 😍 With her hair down and the watchcap and sweater, she reminds me of Alanis Morisette, the famous Canadian (now dual citizenship USA/Canadian but she was born in Canada) singer, in the music video to "Ironic"!! It came out in 1995, during my senior year of high school! 🙂Is her watchcap made of wool? Those are super warm and make you feel hot indoors so perhaps not. I definitely suggest a wool one; they issued us wool ones in the US Navy. 🙂
You guys should definitely start watching Star Trek...personally I like Star Trek better than Star Wars, although I like both. Star Trek is a long journey though. There are 12 TV series, starting 1966, and they are still coming out with new ones...."Starfleet Academy" is a new series coming out that is part of Star Trek...and there are 13 movies, with one more to be released soon! 🙂
The SpaceBall with the afro comb is Tuvok from Star Trek Deep Space 9.
other Mel BRooks movies
1.Young Frankenstien 2.Dracula Dead And Loving IT 3.History Of The World Part 1 3.Blazing Saddles 4.Silent Movie 5.The Producers 6.High Anxiety 7.Life Stinks
Franz Liebkind: You forgot my hit Broadway play, "Springtime For Hitler" As the author, I outrank you!
There’s definitely a great amount of overlap with Star Wars fans and Mel Brooks fans (and Monty Python fans and ZAZ fans and etc etc). It’s all part of our general nerdiness.
The singing lizard is from the warner brothers cartoon called the Singing frog
We need to check out more parodies from Mel Brooks, especially older ones!
Back in the 80s we brake for animals was a popular rear bumpersticker in the States.
they are making a sequel to Spaceballs but havent come up with a title for it yet I still like the one that Rick Moranis suggested " Spaceballs 3 the search for spaceballs2"
