Thanks for this. I used the same principle to open up my CanoScan 8800F. (Small differences: The cable to the lid is not detachable, there is one screw less, and the top+glass assembly came off quite easily.) The calibration strip had acquired a stain on it, possibly I or some other user had cleaner the glass with the wrong fluid or too much fluid. This caused a bright band down the scanned image. Solution: Tape a new strip of uniform bright white paper on top of it.

Wonderful directions. Thank you all for the added information as well. My scanner is like new.

Thanks so much! I'd read on so many forums that the haziness was "supposed to be there." One suggestion--to easily remove the end plate, turn the scanner upside down and fit a small flat screwdriver into the slot between the gray part of the end plate and the black body of the scanner. With very little effort, the plate comes right off, and with no damage to all the little plastic hooks that attach it to the scanner.

I had the same problem with my 8600F as did you.....the inside glass was fogged. I tried to figure a way to take it apart, but to no avail. I called Canon and they could not provide me with a service manual, and it was going to cost $125 + to fix a scanner worth about the same. Thanks for your UA-cam Video; you have saved me money, time and frustration. I cannot thank you enough for your clear and explicit video. There is no way that I would have figured it out on my own without breaking something..and I am a very tech guy (having built radios, computers and other electronic stuff). Thanks again..YOU ARE THE MAN !!!!

This is marvelous. Thank you so much, your video helped me A LOT - even owning another scanner! I just did this on my Canoscan 8800f. The lid will come off just the same way and there are the same type of 2 screws down in the holes, which you have to get out. And now the differences:
    1. you cannot screw off the lid like you could in case of the 8600f, but you just put it a bit apart.
    2. the plastic front: first get out the edges of the grey rim out of the body-sides, slightly pulling them apart. After they came out you can peu-a-peu get the rest apart with a screwdriver and take the piece off. Finally the black piece: just rotate it upwards from the bottom and hook it out.
    3. then you'll see 2 screws instead of 3.
    4. now you can already remove the whole glass-frame working thoroughfully from the front part (where you just unmounted the plastic piece and the 2 screws) to the back and clean it.
    5. Reassembling means do the same, but the other way round.
    Any questions? :-)
    Hugs and kisses

I finally cleaned my 8400F glass! The fog has been present since I purchased it way back in 2005. It has always bothered me but I couldn't see how to get to the backside of the glass. Your video was great and now I can finally sleep at night! : )

Many Thanks The one I bought from eBay was badly fogged and dusty. Probably due to it sitting unused for a year or two.
At last a useful UA-cam video and NO annoying music !!

***** I forgot to add that on my scanner when you are removing the glass at the last stage there is a little slot to help you. If you look on the right side about half way up next to the glass there is a small rectangular hole with '||' beside it. Push a small screwdriver into the slot and the glass carrier pops up meaning you don't have to force it clear of the base.

Let me add my thanks, too. I was scanning slides with a cheap "Wolverine" scanner with disappointing results until I found a second hand 8600F (with the film inserts!!). Very happy, but I keep seeing the fog. Well, after this, FOG NO MORE!

Thank you so much for this wonderfully helpful video! Can you believe, it's still relevant and extremely useful nearly seven years after you made it? I have exactly the same model as you and it developed a similar problem. The 8600F is an excellent scanner and it looks like I may get ANOTHER ten years out use of it -- thanks to you! Cheers.

Thanks a million! We are using this to scan over 50 years of my father's slides and the film that was building up under the glass was becoming a problem. You have saved us money and time. Many Thanks!

You wrote this 4 years ago and I am interested to know your experience. Did you use a Mac or PC? I am using a Macbook Pro and it is taking me over 2 minutes a slide and I wonder if PC is quicker? I'm getting great fidelity, so I am not complaining except for the fog and now that complaint is about to be gone! I have to unplug and replug the USB cable to get the driver to work properly - this is only a small element of the time it takes.

Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I have had this scanner for years and it does an excellent job but the fog inside was driving me crazy. I just hated seeing the fog. Canon told me that this was normal so I just accepted it. I just clean the glass this weekend with no problems. The glass is crystal clean.

Excellent! Thank you very much. I've had my 8600F for probably nearly 5 years and it has done thousands of scans - but, you could easily see that a film of 'dust' was building up inside, and certain scans were definitely coming out cloudy. But thanks to your great video, it's now working as new!

Thank you so much for this video. This makes it SOOO easy. And I had the same exact fogging going on, on the underside of the glass. Now all I have to figure out is how to scan at 4800dpi. Again, thanks. This is such a blessing.

Awesome! I bought mine used about a year ago and its always had fog and dust under the glass. Finally decided to fix it but had no idea how to get it open until I found this video. The front cover comes off easily by having the back pointing towards you an pressing down/forward with your thumbs on the top of the silver piece. Then you can pop it off then pop off the black piece separately A little dab of grease on the tip of the screwdriver will also hold the screws while you insert them..

Nice. Opened mine up just now.
However, on the left top side there is a little hole exactly half way back where you should put a small flat screwdriver or the like and bend the clip inwards. Then you don’t need to ”pop” the top off. It easily lifts right up. :)

I used this for my 8800f, other not being able to disconnect the cord from the top (just meant I had to lay it out when I removed it) and 2 instead of 3 screws on the one side it was the same.
I did it to try and figure out why I was getting the purple line across my scans. I assumed it was one of the lights in the scanning bar and I used a can of compressed air to blow it out......no more purple line, like getting a new scanner for free. TY!!

the same and I could clean the inside of the glass “plate”. I’m a happy dude!

Thank you, at least this gives me a start. I want to clean my CanoScan 9000F Mark II inside and underneath the glass. The case seems to be a bit different though. I cannot see how I should remove the sides, as they are in one piece, but at least I know where I should be able to find the first screws.

At 4:27 where you start to talk about removing the glass panel--there's a much easier way than trying to get your fingernails into the seam. Along the very edge of the scanner between your hands, pretty much midway along the length--see the tiny slot (about 1/4" wide) right on the very edge of the scanner? Take a very small flat-bladed screwdriver, insert it into this slot, and pull the screwdriver toward you. This will release the small plastic tab which is the only thing holding the glass on.

Am trying to clean the top section / lid of my canonscan8800F without any luck. That section of the scanner is used to scan slides, film etc. However, there is an enormous amount of dust on the this upper scanning area.
Have tried taking the top section apart without getting anywhere. There are three screws and once removed nothing wants to budge.
Anyone with experience cleaning this section of the scanner please let me know.

I have the Canoscan 8600F. The cover has 4 screws that I removed. With some difficulty I've been able to pry the cover apart at the hinge end. Looking underneath, I was able to see two additional screws at the front of the cover. These are hidden by the rubber cushions that keep the lid off the glass. My advice is to use something like a screwdriver for leverage and reach into the recess where the hinges are to apply pressure to the lid and it should come off once all the screws are removed. Good luck.

Great video. Now I have removed all the fog from the underside of the glass. Next project -- I need help to replace the light bulb for scanning slides/film. I've removed 4 visible screws. With some difficulty I've been able to separate the cover at the hinge end and I'm able to reach in to the area where the light is. The front of the cover is still tightly secured with 2 screws that are "hidden" under the rubber cushions on the lid. Remove these screws and the lid should separate. Where does one find a replacement lamp (P01728063524)?
