Believe it or not this was number one in the UK when I first had my heart broken. Apart from the gender, I felt it was written about how I felt. if you’ve never loved and lost, it doesn’t hit home the same. I’m jealous of that innocence. I feel old.
Face yes, voice yes, person... not really. She'd done some stupid things to others later in her life, that definitely don't make her a "beautiful" person.
I feel like it's very difficult for today's kids to understand how to react when they are listening to music with emotion and meaning. This is new to them. I dont think his daughter was exactly bored, but she didnt really know how to react at first. I believe she began to feel it more after the initial shock. Or I could be completely wrong about everything. It's hard to tell how anyone else is feeling.
True, she looked like the crying part of the video affected her somehow but she couldn't understand why. I also think she might not have had the proper vocabulary to describe what she thought she heard and maybe was insecure of how she would sound trying to describe it. Says a lot about this generation. Partially true. Her mother died when she was very young. But she does say that is what the song means to her and what influenced the emotion seen in the video.
It's been so lonely without you here. We all can relate! I am 42, and I totally remember slow dancing to this song at my middle school spring dance! Love this song. Brings emotion to the table which is exactly what music today lacks!
It's an emotional song for those who thought the world of your love only to have your heart broken by going your separate ways. I've been through it twice. Anyone who listens to this song who has been through that can relate and gets emotional.

Most relationships ends with at least one broken heart, so you could maybe say it is abusive. But let us use the word wisely. Thanks Dad for clearing that up and Teen for understanding. Sometimes Love just ends, and it is a whole lot off pain, without anyone to blame.
The lyrics sound like it's about a breakup of a romantic relationship. And that probably was Prince's intentions. However, In an interview, Sinead says she was thinking of her mother. She garnered her emotions from her relationship with her mother who was horribly abusive.
That relayed itself into O'Connor tearing up the picture of the Pope on Saturday Night Live. When her mother went to the priest with abuse charges, he told her to go home and accept anything from her husband or basically she would go to hell.
Ouch! Teen missed by a mile and saw abuse where there was no abuse. She sings about doing things but not because she could not do them when she was with the love of her life. She does things to try to shake herself out of the depression that she loved him deeply but he did not have that depth of love for her--he walked out and left her lonely and heartbroken.. She shares that heartache with truly raw emotion. You feel her pain.
Sinead is a force of nature, who has overcome and continues to overcome the struggles life has dealt her. Her voice is instantly recognisable....it's beauty, like hers is simply unique. Prince wrote the song, BUT Sinead's heart breaking rendition made it a worldwide hit.....and deservedly so.
When Sinéad cried In the video, it was a real tear. In the Rolling Stone Top 500 songs issue, she said, "I didn't intend for that moment to happen, but when it did, I thought, 'I should let this happen.'" She told The Daily Telegraph in 2014 that the tear was triggered because she associated the song's lyrics of love and loss with her mother, who was killed in a car accident in 1985. This is the first video I’ve watch of yours. Great vid. Hit the sub :) Love from Northern Ireland
In memory of seeing a MTV interview. The reason for the closeup I do believe that the video is a recording of the song. She did this studio wise and it's a pre-release of the song to. Meaning it's not even lip-sync. The closeup is actually hiding the mic that we don't even know is there. Now I'm not sure if the vid was out with the song? Though I think this is the first time that a recording live was ever done as a professional video. It's indeed incredible!

Lot of amazing female vocalists here in Ireland. I have Sinead up there at the top. Great to see her back out doing gigs after all her mental health and personal issues.

The emotion in the video was definitely real. She sang it for her mother. I believe she lost her mother around that time and they had a complicated but loving type relationship.
According to Sinead, her mum had abused in every way possible - physically, sexually, psychologically - on a daily basis. She left home at the age of 13 to get away from it. I am sure she still did love her mum somehow, despite the abuse. No child should be treated that way. RIP Sinead.
Did a bit of research and even though Prince composed the song in 1984, he didn't release it before Sinead's version. So, for all intents and purposes, this is the original.
I had heard he actually had written it for her just like he wrote manic Monday to be sung by Bangles. Of course originally he did it for Appalonia but for what ever reason he got Bangles to release it.
@@ChemicalReactions That's correct I was going to correct you before you posted this. Prince wrote this and gave it to Sinead because as so many miss the true brilliance of Prince, he KNEW it better suited her and she would be able to relay the message he intended in the song. now THAT is sign of s music genius committed to his craft. He released it later just because but always intended it to be her song.
Sinead isn't singing about things that she can now do now she's free from an abusive relationship. She's saying she can do these things like going to a fancy restaurant and seeing new people but those things don't stop her from being sad that that person is now gone.
I'm sure I've watched this vid over 100 times, but I'm still and always struck but how stunningly beautiful Sinead was, the beauty of her voice, and her ability to emote so that I am always in tears by the end... every time! RIP
Loved her singing this. So hauntingly beautiful 🤗 Another one you should check out is by Til Tuesday...Voices Carry. This one is about an abusive partner.
The original was by “THE FAMILY”. It didn’t go nowhere, but of course Prince wrote it and re-recorded a few years later, almost 10 years later, after Sinead blew it up. R.I.P. SINEAD❤
Your daughter actually was Bang On. Sinead's version was about her Mother, not a boyfriend, who was abusive to her in every way possible, until she had to leave to survive. I can relate. You still desperately want their love, even though you know on a conscious level as an adult what they offer is nothing like love. A kid just can not relate, and even as an Adult, the pang of pain permeates everyday, you bury it until you can forgive, and only then can you move on.
The song is a message to her mother. She never had a good relationship with her but still lover her. The song and video expresses the freedom she feels without her and the guilt she has because of her love for her.
My my what a beautiful young lady you and your good wife have produced there my friend. I don’t envy the stress she will bring when bot time comes around 😘 So glad we had a boy 👍🏼 Terrific song choice and if my memory serves me right she did that video recording in one take. So the emotion is very real from her. Classic tune, classic writing and a classic video in an era where it was about the quality of writing and music and no about “tits and ass”.
I love how you are just feeling the song, but she is just sitting there mostly with a blank stare on her face. It reminds me of my children and myself. Lol
I remember when this Song first come out and how powerful it was. Then everything went south for her and got pretty bad. She attacked the Pope and the audience shouted at her until she was escorted off stage and yea it went down hill from there.
If you watch this music video and you pay attention to the third verse where she says all the flowers that you planted momma - she starts to get teary-eyed 🥺 cause her mom had passed away before she recorded that music video and those words made her think instantly of her mom.
This song is about Prince's mother, the giveaway line in the song is "All the flowers that you planted momma, in the backyard. All died when you went away". Sinead also seems to have changed the lyric "I could put my arms around any girl I see" to "any boy I see" in order to suit herself.
Wasn't this a part of his true life story where his mother permanently kicked him out of the house in his teen years? Hence "I know that living with ya baby was sometimes hard but I'm willing to give it another try."
Funny how the dad...a guy can connect EMOTIONALLY to a song while his daughter...a female seems to be disconnected from it. Perhaps it's due to her age and life experiences. Perhaps the more emotionally mature you are the deeper you feel emotions.
I was 12 when I heard it and it moved me deeply, I thought it was great, atmospheric, sad, romantic, all at once. I don't know, I think young women nowadays are increasingly cynical. I don't know why but it's sad.
I think it's significant that Sinnead teared up after the verse mentioning "mama", because of course she was battered by her mother, so then that line about "I know living with you baby was sometimes hard, but I'm willing to give it another try" takes on another picquancy, because she always grieved for the relationship she wished her mother would have given her.
I am same age as Sinead and have many of her albums and love her but I was a bit distracted by the intense teenage embarrassment reaction to Dad in this. 😂 Way to go Dad for hanging in there. You done good! It's important to teach the kids about empathy for the message in the music.

It was the "flowers in the back yard" line that made her cry
Daughter wasn't completely wrong though, as Sinead has said that her mother was abusive.
The emotion in the video was definitely real. She sang it for her mother. I believe she lost her mother around that time and they had a complicated but loving type relationship.
Love it
According to Sinead, her mum had abused in every way possible - physically, sexually, psychologically - on a daily basis. She left home at the age of 13 to get away from it. I am sure she still did love her mum somehow, despite the abuse. No child should be treated that way. RIP Sinead.
Sinead in the third verse broke down as she remembered her late mother. "All the flowers in the backyard mama, all died and withered away"
Umm..."All died when you went away"
If I remember correctly Prince recommended to her to cover the song, and he liked her version better than his own.
@@ChemicalReactions Prince just gave this song away believe it or not.
Yep your correct plus she's from my neck of the wood in Ireland are voices are the bomb
It’s heartbreak,...missing her ex. Everything reminds her of him. A tale as old as animal life.
Sinead isn't singing about things that she can now do now she's free from an abusive relationship. She's saying she can do these things like going to a fancy restaurant and seeing new people but those things don't stop her from being sad that that person is now gone.
I'm sure I've watched this vid over 100 times, but I'm still and always struck but how stunningly beautiful Sinead was, the beauty of her voice, and her ability to emote so that I am always in tears by the end... every time! RIP
This little girl hasn’t ripped her heart out yet. She’s the prom queen. She has no clue yet.
Loved her singing this. So hauntingly beautiful 🤗 Another one you should check out is by Til Tuesday...Voices Carry. This one is about an abusive partner.
Awesome song! One of the great ones on the Atomic Blonde soundtrack btw
I love this song because it can mean so many loves, and lives. A ex, a father or mother who passed, a friend. It's so beautiful in that way.
It seems like a universal experience but being a kid means you haven’t had that happen to you , thus her reaction
Your daughter is awesome, as a woman, I see what she saw, but my husband hears something different. The Joy of music!!
Slipknot - Snuff (Acoustic Version)
Linkin Park - Crawling, From the inside , Guilty all the same, A Line in the Sand
The original was by “THE FAMILY”. It didn’t go nowhere, but of course Prince wrote it and re-recorded a few years later, almost 10 years later, after Sinead blew it up. R.I.P. SINEAD❤
The lyrics are actually about giving up smoking. And for anyone who has, it really is one of the hardest things to do.
Where did you hear that from? Can I get a reference? I thought Prince wrote it after he broke up with his girlfriend and his mom died?
Lmfao! This comment is gold @Gwildor
This is my sons song. Played it at his funeral. 💝
First time iv seen reaction vid that one of the reactors put so much effort in to not reactin Its ok to cry.
Prince wrote this song for her, her mom at that time had recently passed away and he gave her this song
Not written for her. Prince demo-ed it in 1984, years before Sinead was known.
I don’t envy the stress she will bring when bot time comes around 😘
So glad we had a boy 👍🏼
Terrific song choice and if my memory serves me right she did that video recording in one take.
So the emotion is very real from her.
Classic tune, classic writing and a classic video in an era where it was about the quality of writing and music and no about “tits and ass”.
This song is often said a prince song..n it is bit he put it out there and this happened... the greatest cover..... ever. No one sings it better...
heard this was released shortly after her break up with her partner. great singer
Such a lovely lady had mental breakdown shortly after this
Prince wrote it and Chris Stapleton does a brilliant version in tribute to Prince.
I love how you are just feeling the song, but she is just sitting there mostly with a blank stare on her face. It reminds me of my children and myself. Lol
I remember when this Song first come out and how powerful it was. Then everything went south for her and got pretty bad. She attacked the Pope and the audience shouted at her until she was escorted off stage and yea it went down hill from there.
i think she singing the song thinking about her mum who passed away
Generally when you do a reaction video, you are suppose to react. 😂 in every video she looks like she’s watching paint dry.
I dig your reaction vids. Nodding right along with y'all. Sinead version is killer.
The other greatest "oh no I've lost them" song.... is "For No One" by Beatles.
Every damn lyric. And so simply written by McCartney.
I highly recommend Epica Dedicate your Heart. It's an english cover of of a Japanese song.
Everyone being that this is Prince song Sinead made it hers.
God, I remember buying this, where have all the years gone!
as a man listening to this thousands of time never once i thought of it as abusive but more like freedom at last
For starters, there is no other version. No offense to Chris Cornell. Sinead is a hero. If there's heaven, she's probably a warrior now.
Hence "I know that living with ya baby was sometimes hard but I'm willing to give it another try."
this song came out in my early teens
used to play a lot on The Box
even as a kid i could feel the emotion and rawness
Funny how the dad...a guy can connect EMOTIONALLY to a song while his daughter...a female seems to be disconnected from it. Perhaps it's due to her age and life experiences. Perhaps the more emotionally mature you are the deeper you feel emotions.
You're right. She can be uneasy over her dad's emotion, being what, 15 or so.
@@corn_pop6082 kids don't get that mom and dad had a life before they were mom and dad lol
I was 12 when I heard it and it moved me deeply, I thought it was great, atmospheric, sad, romantic, all at once. I don't know, I think young women nowadays are increasingly cynical. I don't know why but it's sad.
No repetitive bass line, female degradation or twerking was mentioned...so no interest.
@@michiganjfrog366 You just demeaned a child. I would not expose a 15 yr old to all the freaks out there.
6:11 Teen: Daaaaad, what a boooooore! Why are you doin' this to me?
I think it's significant that Sinnead teared up after the verse mentioning "mama", because of course she was battered by her mother, so then that line about "I know living with you baby was sometimes hard, but I'm willing to give it another try" takes on another picquancy, because she always grieved for the relationship she wished her mother would have given her.
RIP Sinead, today 26th july 2023
Forget it if you have to explain it to this girl..omg
I am same age as Sinead and have many of her albums and love her but I was a bit distracted by the intense teenage embarrassment reaction to Dad in this. 😂 Way to go Dad for hanging in there. You done good! It's important to teach the kids about empathy for the message in the music.
Good choice! Actually GREAT CHOICE!
