I’m sure you hear this all the time, but your channel was a big factor in my decision to pursue art conservation as a career, and now I’ll be studying conservation at the Courtauld Institute in London this fall. Thank you so much for putting these videos out there!
YAAAAS!! I was genuinely debating commenting on the spoken version of this video asking for an ASMR version! One thing I've found helpful is to leave out the spoken audio but still give an explanation in subtitles (Primitive Technology does a basic version of that). That way, everyone wins 😁
I doubled up on the ASMR, opened another window and started a video with rain sounds. Now, I'm just sitting cozy in your studio watching you work your magic.
I love watching you make decisions when you are in-painting. It truly is such a balance of bringing the artist's intention back and not covering every last bit of age. So beautiful!
Rustling piece at the beginning and ending - Rustle of Spring (German: Frühlingsrauschen) is a solo piano piece (Op. 32, No. 3) written by the Norwegian composer Christian Sinding (1856-1941) in 1896. It is Sinding’s most popular piece of music. It is written in Salon style as a piece meant for entertainment. It was very popular in the United States. It is the music heard during the “Grecian urns and a fountain” tableau at the Ice Cream Sociable from the Broadway musical The Music Man.
Thanks for this! I hear his beautiful music and wonder why it seems familiar. Occasionally I know it. Sinding is a composer unfamiliar to me. Now I get to comb YT looking for his pieces. Wish the music choices were annotated in the description. Yes, I remember the tableau, I can relate to Eulalie Mackecknie Shinn.😊
I found this very soothing and inspiring to watch while listening to the ambience of the workshop and the selected music. What an extraordinary difference from start to finish. Thank you for giving us this choice in addition to the one with commentary. I can only imagine the joy that each family or curator feels as you hand them back a whole piece compared to what they gave to you it seems as though you can meet and surpass any challenge that crosses the threshold of your door. Thank you for sharing your talent with us and taking us on each painting's journey of restoration and wholeness.
It's amazing what I've learned from you. I knew what you were doing every step of the way, why you were doing it, and what products you were using. Thanks for being a great teacher!
I have suffered from insomnia for years, and thanks to this channel and its video In Ambient Sounds I have reduced my taking of sleeping pills by 80%. Thank you to Baumgartner Restoration who unknowingly brings considerable help to people like me. Of France
I would prefer if the asmr version didn't have a musical soundtrack. just the ambient sounds of the room, your tools, the process - without the piano. thanks for videos, I always enjoy them no matter what.
The face cleaning part reminded me of when we used to have those quick oxidizing orange foundations. Like the before and after removing the foundation cream 😂 Amazing video as always though! 👏
I enjoyed this work very much. It is so interesting to see a personality emerge from the shadows. A wonderful artist created the work, and another wonderful artist recovered the work. It reminds me of time traveling. Thanks for sharing! Stay Healthy!
Thank you Julian! I watched your narrated version first and then this complimentary ASMR video. Maybe I'll watch this video first next time and then your narrated version....hmmm....love them both!
I need to tell you this….I’ve gotten to the point that I’ve started expecting certain processes….and it’s always a fun learning process when you don’t do what I expect you to do. I never in my wildest dream thought that I would be an amateur art conservator, and I only mean that in the loose sense of that I kinda know what experts are talking about. Thank you sir.
It's 5am and I'm trying to sleep after forcing myself to stay awake to finish a report... this gorgeous piano intro is exactly what I need to start relaxing ☺️
I had no idea that the hair hanging down her back was, in fact, a blue ribbon! I was stunned to see another blue ribbon on her right arm and shoulder, which magically leapt out of the dark. Wow! It went from pretty to beautiful with your work. Well done, ye!
Excellent work as always, I love your videos. You are amazingly talented. I wish the upper lip (right under the nose) at the middle of 24:11 would have been a touch lighter. It made the upper lip look flatter than the original. Miles better than I could do. So impressed.
Oh thank you! We’ve been watching these on mute, this was such a treat!! (You waxing poetic is probably great for some, but music or asmr is my personal preference). Thank you!!
My thinking is that Julian is doing an experiment to see which video gets the most views! My vote is the video where he verbalizes through his thought processes and explanations on what and why he is working the restoration of the painting in this way!
Brilliant. Seemed like one of the least “damaged” paintings but also one of the dirtiest ever. How clever to film it mute. I did find myself thinking fish glue, vacuum table, lots of scraping, etc😂
Fantastic! Honestly, if I were king every subject would have both video versions. Love it! Can anybody name the musical interludes for me? They're so beautiful!
Thank you Julian, that was amazing...she has such a direct, knowing gaze...in the future could we please have the names of the musical interludes (as if you didn’t have enough to do)😊
Ohh missed these kind of ASMR videos, it take me to the old ones :). I always wanted to ask you Julian, have you ever had to do a work for a museum, restoring a historical paint?
yess. a version without narration and mostly without music. i enjoy that. i love hearing to julian too but every now and then i wish i have different channels and can cut the music
I was looking at your website... at the restoration of the cow... all 12 photos. A thought came to me... if he put these 12 photos in a slideshow, these would make a great UA-cam "shorts" video and could fill in when you don't have a regular video that week. 💖🌞🌵😷
I think so many people follow you out of a bit of envy. I would love to have a job that allowed me to do things at a pace where I’m able to give my very best. I find the part of contemplating and thinking about one’s work counts as time put in but somehow with most jobs that part is not considered. You are in a specialized field of work that caters to rich peoples needs and they can afford to have it done flawlessly and perfectly. My passion is gardening but no quick one day landscaping gigs. I need to sit and listen to the vegetation. Watch it grow a bit, contemplate where it’s all heading over the years. Think about it’s future shape as things mature. Luckily I have a space and time to do it.
It's a fact that all your senses must be at work in your studio, the only things we at home can't experience are the smell of a work, the chemicals you employ and the air borne residues you taste.
I do very much enjoy the narration, but this was a nice change of pace, too. Her ear seems very indistinct compared to the sharpness of the rest of her features. Any ideas why?
Query: Are the cracks caused as a result of the layers of varnish and those kinds of conservation? This painting like many others does not appear to have heavy impasto that I might associate with heavy layers of paint drying and cracking.
Hi Julian, do you ever conserve watercolor paintings? It would be fascinating to see how you work on a piece that's so vulnerable to water, in case you ever have one to work on! I love your channel 😁
Is it weird that I heard his voice in my mind saying the same things he normally would at certain stages? :)
Not even a little. I feel like I'm ready to start as an assistant with how much I know watching these videos.
I heard him say Washi kowzow in my head
I'm glad I'm not the only one, was hearing him explain each process through the whole video :D
he has taught us well 🙂
I heard his voice in my head as well🤣🤣
I’m sure you hear this all the time, but your channel was a big factor in my decision to pursue art conservation as a career, and now I’ll be studying conservation at the Courtauld Institute in London this fall. Thank you so much for putting these videos out there!

Good luck
I WISH I had considered conservation while in art school. Congratulations!
I thinking of doing it too

Almost burst into tears, my grandmother was a pianist and played this song for me regularly😱…the painting is breathtaking, your work is immaculate❤️
My Mum too … she used to sing this when there was some drama in the house 😂
Oooooh, at least a non speaking version again! 👏👏👏 I definitely missed them. Usually I first watch the non speaking version, then the other one.
YAAAAS!! I was genuinely debating commenting on the spoken version of this video asking for an ASMR version! One thing I've found helpful is to leave out the spoken audio but still give an explanation in subtitles (Primitive Technology does a basic version of that). That way, everyone wins 😁
I still like both versions. His voice is soothing at time. An ASMR version might drift me in a relaxed sleepy mood.
I doubled up on the ASMR, opened another window and started a video with rain sounds. Now, I'm just sitting cozy in your studio watching you work your magic.
I go full on silent.
It's winter here in Rotorua,
New Zealand... the woodburner is roaring happily. What more could I ask for.
Yes! I’ve missed these! I love the other versions too though

thank you! what is the name of the piece during the cleaning portion?

Merci pour ces informations 😊

loved every second, I kind of missed these videos.
It's amazing what I've learned from you. I knew what you were doing every step of the way, why you were doing it, and what products you were using. Thanks for being a great teacher!

I was just watching the narrated version the other day and thought about how much I miss the ASMR versions and there it is! 🥰
Lovely ASMR video! Visually and audibly relaxing. Thank you for doing this.
It funny, when I watched the regular version of this, yesterday, I was thinking how much I missed your ASMR takes.
Thank you !!!! I have missed the asmr versions.
The face cleaning part reminded me of when we used to have those quick oxidizing orange foundations. Like the before and after removing the foundation cream 😂
Amazing video as always though! 👏
I had already watched it with his commentary. This time I took a nap. Perfect!
Bravo ! Ton travail est fabuleux (restauration, montage, ...) J'adore l'ambiance de tes vidéos !
YES, Love your ASMR videos. So relaxing!
True craftsmanship
The artist who originally painted this would cry out of joy because you're doing a marvellous job restoring this pretty lady to her former glory! ❤
I enjoyed this work very much. It is so interesting to see a personality emerge from the shadows. A wonderful artist created the work, and another wonderful artist recovered the work. It reminds me of time traveling. Thanks for sharing! Stay Healthy!
Yessssssssssssss thank you for the ASMR version!
I love your choice of music. It is perfect for her fabulousness!

Favourite night time channel! Though sometimes the video is too exciting to sleep :) love your work Julian! Thank you.
This documentary of one restoration shows - among many things - the fearless approach that only a trained pro can use. It’s scary good.
I love your voice and narrative but this was absolutely epic! Loved it and would watch it a thousand times!
This is your best video yet ! (and I've watched all your videos 😊) Love it ! 😍
Bravo! Very beautifully done, masterful, including filming, editing and music choice.
Perfect to listen to when making my own paintings haha, keep up the great work man! ❤
That is a really cool portrait. I love portraits too. It's art that has a third person involved.
ASMR or narrated, your videos being me peace when I watch!

Thank you for this! I would love to see the ASMR version of your other restorations! It really helps me sleep.
I’ve always loved your videos. Out of curiosity, what’s the oldest painting you’ve worked with?

Obsessed with this version
Omg asmr edit is back I missed these so much
Very Professional and Skilled job. congratulations
The aggressive opening piano ensures this video can never live in my ASMR playlist. I'm not trying to be woken up in the middle of the night.
Yes yes yes!!! More like this please

Watched both versions. Like both versions.
Always love the transition. I don't like the sped up version though. I like hearing the real sounds etc. Much prefer the old video style. Thank you.
Beautifully done! Makes you want to know the story of the beauty in the picture. And the music, Julian, let us know about the music please.
