  • ♻️May Bank Holiday Weekend ♻️In my work duties I come across house holders with Privet hedges that are encroaching the public highway and they haven't a clue how to go about cutting it back without killing it or making every side an eyesore so we can surface the paths so I would like to share my personal experiences withmy Privet hedge.

    Over here in France you are not allowed to cut any hedges or trees until the end of July due to birds nesting

      I did a full inspection before I took the top off and never found any nests each year that I cut more away and the restrictions have been increased in the UK.

      Pinned your comment as its important that we check first before we cut and forgot to mention it in the video.

      There’s different rules here for ‘commercial hedges’ and ‘private hedges’ commercial hedge cutting season (which is near enough everything that isn’t on residential land) stops end of March. You can cut your private hedge whenever you want but you must check first, it is a technically a crime if you disturb a nest still.

    On Nantucket in MA, USA and looking for exactly this. Have two hedge entryways to the yards and the previous occupants let them grow in too far so now they’re at awkward angles. Will cut them back hard when we leave at and of summer. Thank you!

      Good luck and do a bit or side at a time the hedge does recover better to get the size or shape you need.

    As a kid, privet hedges where everywhere, sadly now they are few and far between. I remember keeping stick insects and feeding them on privet. A nicely clipped privet hedge can hold it's own against any good lawn. We done for keeping this going and giving it a new lease of life 👍

      Its so easy to put up a wooden fence and this way it costs nothing to maintain, free hedge cutter helps.

    Thanks Terry. We have box hedging, once cut with electric cutters. Now i gently do with a scissors, i only prune it really after that big cut.

    I love having a privit, all around my front garden, saves you replacing fencing, and helps with drainage, my privit is old around 40yrs plus, I dont enjoy the hard work of cutting it, but if done regular is easier in long run

    I dont use the sheeting, I pick it up with my mower it hoovers it up great and chops it up perfect for the compost bin, Privet is a great hedging material you can really chop it hard and it will come back.

      @@terrykingsallotmentgardening It breaks dowm really in a hot compost pile because of all the green leaves, if it is composted cold it does take a while but you have a great mix of brown and green. I have tipped it back out on the path and gone over it again with the mower a second time to really chop it up. Try it one time you will be suprised

    Thank you for the info Terry. You speak about intertwining stems and I've just done a heavy restoration of my 50+ year old hedge. A lot of stems had started rubbing and burning one another so leading to a risk of infection. Not a problem anymore as I've been brutal but I'd be interested in your views. Cheers.

    Is there a better time of year to trim them? Spring or fall? Not for birds but just for the life of the hedge itself?

    • @terrykingsallotmentgardening
      @terrykingsallotmentgardening  4 роки тому +1

      I personally believe that it's best done just before it starts to grow Luke after the chance of frost so it puts its energy into new growth which has worked for me.
