The game tells you shit. Doesn't even imply how to use items, etc. Also 1 life per try? Fuck that shit.

This is one my favourite games of all time, but it definitely isn't suited for one hour long session, while you are talking to someone. It demends you to take your time and sometimes think outside the box.
iamonlinehero Yes. Constructive criticism like this good to see. I last played Comix Zone when I got that Sega game collection for the PS3. I didn't remember it being that difficult when I originally played it, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
Its really not a long game though(game's hard difficulty which makes you start over and over from death makes it feel long). Once you know the game, you can beat the game in a half hour.
Use the rat before leaving each panel it'll find stuff for you. This game is cryptic with puzzles everywhere.
Nice to know! Thanks!
i keep screaming at the screen "USE THE RAT! U NEED THE RAT!"
@@mushitori123123 I need them to understand the finer points of this game haha
His name is Roadkill!
my friend had this game on his computer...I could never get very far in it. Thanks for the tip!
Wow, this game has one of the coolest art styles I've ever seen! really cool.
Comix zone has some of the best 16 bit music ever.
mike dixie rect So does the Mortal Kombat Games. Very 90s.
Everyone knows about MK, this, not so much and personally i think this is the best music on megadrive/genesis.
Howard Drossin, the composer of Comix Zone, has been in a grunge-band before this. Also, he based most of his songs on an already existing ones, no wonder it sounds rock'ish.
There's cheat codes in the Options Menu. If you input certain numbers in the JukeBox, you can get a Level Select and even Unlimited Health.
yea but invincible is no fun. try playing ninja gaiden invincible. not as much fun. more lives or health would have helped it a bit
I used to use the unlimited health cheat and then throw airplanes like constantly lol
almost every game back then had this. what's your point?
The catch to the invincibility cheat is that you can't fall into lava as when you do, Sketch will freeze in place and you have to restart the game.
@@omikronweapon almost every videos comment section is filled with... comments... what's YOUR point?
This was/is a game ahead of its time.
actually i havent seen a game with this exact concept before, MAYBE beatiful joe, but I think this is aesthetically better
viewtiful joe - one of the best.
yup
I also love how smooth the animation is in this game, buttery smooth Gen goodness. Vectorman is another great example.
PICK UP THE RAT, PICK UP THE RAT, PICK UP THE RAAAAAT!!!
That's me
Couldn't stop laughing. Comment was spot on. And the puzzle with the clock wise and counter clock wise. Pull the lever.
If i remember correctly, you use the rat to tear the panels and reveal items that heal you, thats what was making it an endurance. I always thought it was cheap they didnt tell you that but then have the nerve to take health from you for punching stuff thats in your way like the barrels
They do push the rat on you a lot though. Its kind of a hint he's important. Roadkill old Buddy!
Also The damage drain for punching barrels. Maybe encourages you to use the dynamite for that stuff. Or top off your health with an Ice Tea afterwards.
I guess thats what the TNT is for ?
It's a game of inventory management.
Dynamite blows through heavy obstacles and in one of rooms in the second stage I like to drop it on the enemy.
Every time you beat a level, you get an extra life. You can have 3 lives. Yes, it's hard, but it's very satisfying when you finally beat it. Mike was pretty much right at the end there.
Its funny how they can figure to kneel at the end of a map with a certain color gem to get a tornado to pick them up, but they can't figure out how to use a switch or cover up a hole some times
LOL
They didn't figure it, they used the Power... Nintendo Power.
list of Genesis games James and Mike need to play: Kid Chameleon, Shining Force, Vectorman 1 and 2,
Those games suck. The SNES has similar, but far superior versions of these games. The Genesis was obsolete the moment Super Mario World was released.
That's a very astute observation guys.Because in comics, time and space are the same thing, the space in the page is actually also represents time, hence the artists can simulate time going faster or slower by using more (and smaller)or less/bigger panels per page
One of the best Sega games ever made.
Not saying much. There were only a handful of fun Sega Games.
@@mattjennings6706 that's an obviously uninformed opinion. Sega had just as many fun games as nintendo, if not more
@rockman fan Other than Shinobi 3, every Genesis game pales in comparison to the top SNES games
Sounds like Matt Jennings hasn't played many Sega games.
@rockman fan I own both systems and play them regularly. SNES has much better top tier titles... SG has the odd decent game.
aw yeah man, such a classic. I can remember being terrible at this game as a kid and still I couldn't get enough of it. There's something about the music and graphical quality of the Sega Genesis games that hits this unique nostalgia button in me. I always had Nintendo and my friends had Sega, so when my grandmother bought me a Genesis gen 2 for Christmas one year, I felt like a freaking boss because I finally had both options. Now I also want to go back and replay Shining Force, for some reason I have always sort of linked these two in my head. I guess I got them at about the same time or something.
One of my favorites from childhood. I remember just being blown away that he jumped from page to page
Omg! This was one of my favourite games to play, I'm really glad you guys are playing it. The style is so unique and the music's great; I could never make it past a certain point, though, and the difficulty is quite harsh. Thank you for this video! I really appreciate all the work that goes into them! :)
LOL
I absolutely love this game, but I agree with James that they made this game difficult in very cheap ways, like not filling up your life bar between stages. No game should ever do that. And the game is REALLY stingy with extra lives. Just give three lives and you'd still have a damn difficult game.
Yeah no I 100% agree, I never completed it cause it was ridiculously hard and I couldn't help just giving up. It was hard as fuck :/
Omg! Just play it more, it is not so hard.
O Fuck off all the work.... they just play and nag about the game.
>comix zone
>notorious for being extremely hard
No way. I guess it can be considered hard if you just punch everything (draining your life) and never use your rat to search around for items. Then again, they never tell you about it.
wow dude
I love the grungy aesthetic of this game. I've always wanted to do a cover of the tunes! This music and mutant league footballs music are some of the rockinest.
This was one of the Forgotten Gems on the Genesis. Most People I knew growing up,had no clue this Game existed.
If I see James kicking the rotating things again I'm going to lose my mind.
It s a really easy game when you look all the secrets and know how to play.
they wont do that unless its a snes game

It's obvious they didn't know what to do, the game was giving you clues about what to do but they were no paying attention.
Exactly they need to pay attention
Every time I see you two plying together, makes me remember my best friend and I. We used to play like this when we were younger. Just the two of us and the game, no problems, no worries, away from the real world. How I miss those days =(
I love this game, the artstyle is cool, the music is awesome and the whole idea of being an artist trapped in your own creation is really creative
Wow. These graphics are insane for a Genesis game.
As a CHILD I figured out the item usage and the RAT. The all important rat.
Yes, the game is hard as hell, but come on dudes.
"It's not that hard of a game" but I can't beat it - James
Comix Zone and Punch Out are “date night” in our house! ❤️
7:14 I never even knew you could do that. Especially since its bloody obvious what you're supposed to do lol
Find the combination!
This might have been mentioned in the comments, but Super Mario Brothers 2 for the NES, the US, Doki Doki Panic one, had two continues.
staying up at 2 am playing Sega Genesis. James I wish I were you
watching james puzzle out the metaphysics of this game is so emblematic of his appeal. never change man.
2:15 I have no idea what you guys are smoking... but i want some of that!
jose juan andrade Woah man.
jose juan andrade They're smoking Good Chronic.
James just meant when you move to another panel, you stay at the same place, but you are ahead a little bit, to the future. You kill a guy in sewers in the panel 1, move to panel 2, you still are in the sewers (same place), but it's on the future (ahead in time). So you move in time, but you don't move in space.
Sounds nerdy as fuck but it makes sense =p
they are next ti becoming stoned ahahahahahahah
I love James and Mike when they play games together and talk and laugh. But my only pet-peeve is when James pauses the game to talk to Mike 1 on 1. Great videos! Don't get me wrong at all! I love avgn too.
I remember getting this game oddly enough, in like a "Sears" type of department store. They had like a glass cabinet for their game section, and they had this one randomly as a bargain item. I remember playing the crap out of this game when I was a little girl. BUT the game was freakin brutal. My brothers used to be able to get further, and I would always struggle. Game is relentless. And the one life thing is just insane. But I know there is a ton of items and features in the game, that help you progress. But at that young of an age, it was always lost on me. I do recall playing this game over and over, because it was so addicting. Even if it got frustrating the further you went down (because dying the further you went down, was rage inducing).
I love this show, it's so much fun to watch every week. I like the fact it's just James & Mike playing a game talking about nostalgic stuff or whatever. Most game shows always are about opinions. This show is just about having fun.
James reciting the entire Twilight Zone intro gave me a geek-gasm. ;)
A wonderful moment indeed!
It never ceases to amaze me how they fail to experiment with things, ignore on-screen prompts, and just generally try to brute force through a game.
It's puzzle game, not just another beat-em-up. So painful to watch. :)
In my opinion, button mashing is an improper technique for almost any game. It does sometimes annoy the hell out of me that they always resort to button mashing, but they are funny enough for me to keep watching.
@@stickypickle8857 they re good for shmups though
Whenever you die, if the antagonist deems you deserving, he will draw you back to life.
A correct use of the items is the key of all. 3 items, 3 extra buttons in the 6 button pad.
Also let’s you do a custom move with the push of a button. These moves consist of either just regular moves now just used with a button push (such as shoulder smash,) or exclusive moves (like block and shaolin kick.)
This game used to frustrate me as a kid, then I got older and realized it is not a beat em up, it is a puzzle solving game. Once I figured that out, i finally beat it.... after 28 years.
Making this game any easier would allow you to beat it in one small sitting. I think it took a year to master. When I beat it as a kid the amount of euphoria I got from accomplishment was so huge. I even woke up my dad to show him the credits to prove I beat it. On the weekend I was never supposed to wake up my parents. But even he was impressed. I would say this isn't so hard when you learn all the little tricks. You can easily beat it if you memorize all the patterns. The music graphics and controls are great. But one life was frustrating as hell. There are harder games though, like The Haunting and Zombies Ate My Neighbors and Slime World. I never beat those but I love those too for some reason.
mike and james: blah blah blah 4d
me: get the fuckn rat!!!! no dont go down there!!!! gahhhh!!! damn you!
There's definitely more to the game than what's been demonstrated here. I'm just glad you got to the second level and learned about the lives system.
man I beat it with one life, use the handel
Oh how I hope you guys have revisited this game. The rat is ultra important and you just keep leaving him behind lol. Such a good game
I'm sure they're not but they're having a lot of stoned moments this monday haha
Aw man, they skipped the intro. I never got far in this game, but the overall design always stuck with me, and that opening always gave me chills.
Holy shit, an old Genesis game that I've played and you guys haven't? This is one of the greatest moments in my life.
I love Cinemassacre, but, my God, they played Comix Zone like noobs
Cause when it comes down to it, they are.
@ ryan olson so true for all their talk they really suck
UnCreative Deconstructionism
Me
It's a hard as fuck game
@@UnCreativeDeconstructionism I beat the game twice
I played this game on PC back in the late 90s. Sega started porting their stuff pretty damn early, even when they had their consoles going strong
Mike runs the show so much the title pic for this video is Mike with and without glasses
"Find The Combination" - The game tells you this every time you enter that room. i figured they could've figured that out, but they wouldn't stop talking about Planet Of The Apes and pay attention instead. Pay attention and read the manual sometimes or look up the game on the internet. i don't understand why them and others are so against that stuff. With that said i think that 1 life shit is bullshit and this game is a little too hard, lol.
Hey James and Mike, Idk if you noticed, but breaking boxes, cages, barrels etc actually damages your health for every hit you land. The "correct" way to play, conserving your life total, is to find ways around obstacles like pushing them or tricking enemies into breaking them for you. Just another way this game is really difficult. Also, using the D pad and various taps of the attack button, there are actually a large variety of moves you can perform, which get around a lot of your enemy repeatedly blocking your basic punch. I'd love to see a "revisit" episode where you guys bear down and beat the game. Keep up the awesome videos!
I feel you talking too much and don't paying any attention to the game. You are punching metal objects and losing heath constantly, you don't try to figure out combos or how or even when to use health potions. Instead you talk about Planet of the Apes and how cheap the difficulty is. Please...
Exactly. I love them too, and I understand they just want to give a brief opinion about what they feel on the fly, like some casual gamers sitting at home with some snacks & beers. But that's what you don't expect from these guys: they are old-school true gamers (specially Mike) and they seem wrong as they play with no intensity or even paying attention, they just talk and talk mashing buttons almost randomly. If so, what is the point for this video?
yea and mike and james try to start out with the shalon kick
I think the older they get the more they suck.
Listening to these two pontificate about the metaphysics of this comic book video game made me guffaw with great delight.
He said "Maybe the Tiger Electronics games are 1D" & I lost my shit lmao
This video convinced me that they smoke weed
No, it's because the game is so bad, they had to force themselves to pay even a little attention to it.
@@MrEbrilio Im convinced that you're smoking some weird shit because you think this game is bad.
Ive been hoping you guys would play this game for YEARS. This was my all time favourite game as a kid. So fucking awesome
I just spent a few hours playing this on the weekend and FINALLY beat it. It's definitely one of those things you need to play a lot and memorize better strats. Like, using bombs to blow up blockades and doors instead of spending your health smacking it x100 times, or holding the attack button to create this insta-kill-death-paper-air-plane, lol. Stuff like that. Cool video though, I frigin love this game. Cheers~
Super C is a 2-continue game, James! 2 continues equals a total of 3 sets when taking into account the initial set of lives (player credits). How many lives you can have in total depends on the already given count (or 'per level', if witnessed). In Contra's case, it's 3 player credits and 3 continues (3+ 3x3=12). With Super C - 3 player credits and 2 continues (3+ 3x2=9).
The rainbow shadows are due to video compression artifacts caused by James using composite for his setup. If you play this on your setup Mike, you would see the shadows display normally through RGB.
Such a good game. Genesis does what Nintendon't.
At 6:40 you're supposed to hold the lever and switch it up and down and align those rotating diodes. It will then explode and you progress to the next panel.
If you hold the attack button you'll see Axle tear paper off the background and use it to throw a paper airplane across the panel. It will wipe out every enemy in your way.
If you let the rat run loose it will find hidden items and power ups in certain panels.
Mike is actually good at games but when he plays with James he blows. Like he can't play correctly if he's not focused.
1:50 They're not repeating the background as far as I can tell they're going for a real comic book narrative vibe here. Had Mike chose the other path, the layout will be the statue (facing the same way) in the corner left panel and him running to thr right zone, yet, by choosing to go down, he chose to be "on the other side" of thr previous panel. Thr statue is now facing the opposite direction, indicating that.
At least I think that's what they were doing. And I think it's really cool, honestly
The game punishes you if you play like shit and don't understand the gameplay mechanics, as it should.
Next time maybe use the rat to search for health, solve the puzzles instead of smashing them to pieces like a monkey, and work out places to use items like bombs, cos, you know, its not like they give you this stuff for no reason maybe?
The thing of the "clock" is a puzzle. You must stop the thing with the... interruptor, when both touch the middle metal. You can use the dinamite with the same "square level" enemy, right down below you.
He thought he was playing...was the demo XD
That's hilarious
er... no he was playing, you got it reversed. He thought it was the demo but he was playing.
The earliest game I remember using panels was Dan Dare on the ZX Spectrum.
You're great at Nintendo games, guys, but such noobs at Sega ones :)
One of my favorite Genesis games. Thanks!
What a shame! Comix zone is one of best games ever. And you never played!
THIS FUCKING GAME HAS BEEN BURIED IN MY BRAIN FOR YEARS AND I NEVER REMEMBERED ENOUGH ABOUT IT TO FIND IT. MY NOSTALGIA IS BURNING.
I had this on some kind of pc port collection that had sonic and a few other games on it.
Mike gets irritated when James talks over him, but he talks over James constantly.
The gameplay and secrets make this game so much more than style. One of the best games ever.
My cousin had this game on his Sega Genesis and i remember just go out of school and run to play this wonderful with him.
great times
I can't believe everyone thinks James and Mike dislike Genesis. The only complaint they gave about this game was the difficulty and literally praised the rest tenfold. There are so many Sega fanboys in these comments that were just itching to troll the second they could.
THANNNK YOUUU! they know what their talking about. they own just about ever game ever made
VideoGameLover58 I specifically remember them saying the reflection level in bloodlines was awesome for the Genesis hardware. Just because James never owned a Genesis as a kid doesn't mean he doesn't appreciate it now. I love PlayStation but when he said he still preferred 4 over symphony of the night I didn't take offense to it.
***** what? They didn't shit on bloodlines. They had nothing but good things to say. I personally like symphony of the night and recently... The Simon's quest revamped by *metroidquest*
But, i still have my childhood genesis and a handful of games left including
"my bloodlines cart"
( i sold off most of my old games for 5th gen...then 6th gen and so on)
I played this game over, and over, and over as a kid; at least a few hundred times. I never even passed the 3rd level. I finally managed to beat the game though.
(20 years later...)
The more you play it, the better you become, I know because I've completed it many times.
I really like James and Mike but watching them play anything other than NES games is so frustrating. James seems to miss out on obvious mechanics with pretty much every game he plays. The uses of Roadkill are demonstrated pretty quickly. He will actually explore the environment of his own accord. Watching them kick that puzzle to death... damn. THERE'S A LEVER RIGHT THERE. How can you call yourself a video game nerd when your knowledge and understanding of games starts and stops at the NES?
Phil Brook
Being a video game nerd doesn't mean you magically have universal knowledge of games you've never played.
It’s not universal knowledge it’s fucking obvious if you pay attention.. they literally say “find the combination” and “cover up that hole” and they completely ignore it while talking abt planet of the apes and 2-continue games
@@briantolles187 There are plenty of NES games that they do the same thing with and tbh no matter how easy the game is there's NO REASON not to have at least one checkpoint per stage or have no continues. That's just BAD GAME DESIGN. Besides, this is a James and Mike Monday not a fucking National tournament.
They do have checkpoints at the end of each page tho
Its kind of an adventure game disguised as a brawler. Clever use of your inventory and roadkill finding hidden items will get you farther.
I've beaten it before. But only because of RNG for an Ice Tea to drop before the final boss.
Jesus, I didn't know Comix Zone had such a cult following. Guys, the game is hard, and unfairly difficult in some places. Even the creator of the game admitted that he made it too difficult
ya think? maybe add more lives possibly? did he not test it before release? I mean wtf!
I dunno, it isn't anywhere near as difficult as Alien Soldier, or Contra Hard Corps, or especially Undead Line.
Hard corps isn't really all that hard for me. The robot with the homing weapon makes it stupid easy. Ghouls and ghosts is WAY harder!
I will say this. I didn't give it the chance it deserved years ago. If theres exploration it can't be that bad. I'll give another go 1 day
I don't personally consider it to be that hard in the grand scheme of things, but I think it's probably harder than Comix Zone.
The problem here are the fans of AVGN. They've become so big that fans will shit on them any chance they get for a game they're good at that J&M aren't.
Comix zone isn’t a fighting game, it’s a Story puzzle with action. It’s like if you could punch people in myst.
The narrator and character says that the rat is your partner, so that shouled be a hint as to how you can use it to help you through the level. The rat, like other people have said before, is used to find hidden items in the panels needed to beat the game or get through it easier.
Great game, amazing graphics, good controls and outstanding soundtrack. Unfortunately those two are just too bad at video games. Sometimes I think they do it on purpose to have more comments on the video.
After they started talking about their 2D 4D Dimensional talk. I got this game. The gameplay was the main reason, but their conversation helped.
I think this game could have been so much easier if they just made it so you didnt lose health breaking barrels or gates that you NEED to punch. its like a tollbooth, you need to pay the tax to continue. I dont know how many times I have died because I just dont have enough health from the gates and barrels.
A straight line (piece of string for example) is 1D. You can go left or right. A piece of paper is 2D. You can go left or right AND up or down. A block is 3D. L/R, U/D and in and out.
A straight line with a thickness that tends towards zero is 1D.
yea. like he said
game and watch 😆 soooo 1D😣

This game needs a sequel
And Amen Mike! I played this game as a kid and kept playing it and playing it!
When you figure it out, Comix Zone is pretty easy. There are continues, you just need to earn them, and there're power ups and health items here and there to help you through. Also, you can save your hp by using dynomite and other stuff to blow thick doors.
Anyone else have an aneurysm while yelling at Mike to pick up the damn rat?
6:40 You're supposed to make the spinning things line up with the thing between them.
