I had these EXACT same issues with my 32X as a kid. I swapped out 2 or 3 32X units and spent hours on the line with Sega Tech Support. I found out years later that there are two ribbon cables inside the 32X that have the habit of popping off slightly. You can access them by taking the top shell off. I would highly recommend James try popping that off and making sure the 2 ribbon cables are pressed down firmly. Once I did that, my copy of Chaotix worked flawlessly on my Model 2.
It was always hard to play Knuckles Chaotix on my 32X. The slightest nudge of the system or cartridge would freeze the game(sometimes deleting the game saves). Plus you have to play with the wires to make colors look right. But the game was always fun for me when it works. I recommend reading the game manual to understand some of these controls/story/design choices.
With that said, Chaotix is a mixed bag IMHO. It's nowhere near Zelda CDI levels of bad, it's playable but it isn't a fast paced Sonic 1 - 3 game or even Sonic CD.
It's not the Genesis or the game, it's the 32x you had problems with. There's a ribbon cable inside the 32x that becomes dislodged that will cause the problems you're talking about.
Games from this period always have this plastic sheen to them. Everyone tried to copy DKC with the prerendered shit. I always wished they had done a real Sonic game on the 32x (along with thousands of other people lol.) If they were smart they would have done something like Mania back then, it easily could have been done on the hardware and would have been a killer app for the 32x. Of course it would look less 16-bit and would have the plastic sheen of the era, but I'd take that if it meant some good classic Sonic levels and gameplay. By this time it was getting to the point that nobody gave a shit about 2d though. If it wasn't 3d it barely got a second glance because 3d was the new hotness.
i feel like this game in general is 90ing the 90s harder than anything has ever 90d before. the whole game just looks like the 90s exploded all over the place and someone put the aftermath on a 32x cart.
I'm so glad you guys started J&M. Throughout the series, you've fully distinguished the real James apart from The Nerd, when previously much of the fanbase didn't even know he was playing a character.
When I was a kid, (like maybe 10 years ago), I couldn't comprehend that he was playing a character. I still knew they were scripted from all the fight scenes, but I really thought AVGN was James' entire personality.
And even further, early prototypes of Chaotix (supposedly as part of a cancelled game called Sonic Crackers, which got reworked into Chaotix) featured both Sonic and Tails as (playable) characters. They were eventually scrapped - Sonic got replaced by Mighty (simple sprite redraw and palette switch), while Tails is mostly entirely removed. You can still select a glitchy character in Chaotix debug mode that used to be what Tails was, but the game tends to crash very often with it. (It also appears as Knuckles but with Mighty's palette, so it looks very weird. Some call this glitchy leftover data character 'Wechnia')
segasonic the hedgehog (1993-J) starred sonic, #raytheflyingsquirrel, and mighty armadillo. I was unable to emulate it properly, because it was a trackball arcade game.
The Sonic 3 portion of S3&K is best played standalone for its cooler boss music + more challenging final encounter. Also you get the prototype for Michael Jackson's "stranger in moscow" over end credits. Still my favorite Sonic game
I don't normally comment on stuff but I played this game to death as a kid and I have to say it never looked so awful as it does in this video - the saturation on the TV is WAY TOO HIGH and it's SO blurry!!! This was clear and beautiful when I played it (and any footage you see online or screenshots these days shows super clear imagery). I don't understand why it looks so degraded in this video but I hope you guys know it doesn't look this bad generally!
The colors are off Mike. Everything is more pinkish. I noticed you mentioned Sonic near the end of the video, so when you guys played it must've looked normal. Maybe a capture card glitch
9:00 IIRC that thing that you're doing where your partner character jumps to the front of the screen, that's basically the developer's "fix" for an issue that would occasionally happen where your partner would get stuck in an area where you can't pull them back - or sometimes they outright disappeared if I remember right. Hitting that button manually forces them back with you.
I used to play the hell out of this game when I was young. I remember this was the reason i begged my parents to buy me a 32X. Good to see it on Cinemassacre, I kinda wanna learn how to speedrun it now LOL.
Definitely works with model 2's - I've hooked it up with a few variations of it, including audio modded units, RGB/S-Video output, etc. Either James' model 2 is defective, or one of the power adapters is underperforming.
according to other comments i'm seeing, the fault is with a ribbon cable inside the 32x and not the genesis, and it's a known issue. so you may also just need to get a new 32x.... or send the one you have to ben heck d-;
I used to own a European model 2 mega drive and a 32X with Knuckles Chaotix. Worked fine, up until something went wrong with the power adapter and the display (Due to the ribbon cable issues inside the 32X).
CRTs have a "tint" dial to perform color correction on the lousy analog signal. They probably assumed the LG would be set properly by default so they didn't bother with any settings. Just a guess.
Some HDTV's don't support the old 240 resolution anymore. I had the same problem plugging my NES into my Vizio. It only accepts a 480i signal or higher.
Knuckles Chaotix felt more like Sega was checking off a list of "cool" special effect features to show off the capabilities of the 32X rather than focusing on a good game. Not good, not bad, it was just a weird game. - Rotating wireframes - True 3D special stages with horrible clipping that makes them nearly unplayable - Mode 7 style special stages - Secondary character scaling larger/smaller over the screen - Etc The problem was it was just distracting how overused it all was.
leeboy2k1 you wasting your breath saying that to them. They know that, they just refuse to do it. I watched Mike live stream once playing Nintendo, many people told him he could emulate. They want to play on the real thing. I feel you tho. There is no difference. You can't convince them to emulate. Anything that's 8 or 16 bit is 100 percent perfect on PC.
I remember having to send off my Mega Drive model 1 and 32X mushroom together to be fixed after buying the 32X. When I got them back they mostly worked together. Occasionally I'd have issues but nothing like you guys. My copy of this game worked fine 80% of the time.
Trivia: Knuckles Chaotix is based on a canceled Sonic game called Sonic Crackers. Sonic Crackers and Knuckles Chaotix have the same ring-band mechanic-type gameplay.
Thanks for not being too hard on this game. You guys should give it another try after you understand the controls better. For instance calling your partner to your position (that costs ten rings) is almost never needed. When you understand the rubber band mechanics better, you can slingshot your way through levels efficiently. There are many situations where you can pick up your partner and toss them up, then slingshot your way above them and keep alternating. In the time stages, you needed to have both characters standing on the switch. I recommend choosing Espio the Chameleon because he can move along walls kind of like Grant from Castlevania 3. You generally want to avoid the heavy bot and bomb bot in the Combi Catcher.
3:26 The frustration is so relatable in this picture. That's rated somewhere between losing your tv remote and having to unplug and replug your one, cheap ass hdmi cable every time you switch between devices.
LTL Sploder no they are not. That's how it looks I still own this game that's how it's always looked the game is very confusing but beatable with luck on level select.
This game's aesthetics really stand out, even compared to the other Sonic games, and that's something! I wish more 2D platformers were as imaginative and weird as this one.
You need the expander piece on the side of your genesis. The 32X came with an expansion adapter that actually plugs into the side of the genesis where the sega cd would normally plug into
It has nothing to do with the TV. The footage is being recorded straight from the console itself, not from the TV. It might be bad RGB cables or that something isn't fully supporting RGB signal (Assuming they are using RGB).
I had a Genesis model 1 from 1991 until 2001. I sold it to be able to buy a PS2 at launch. While I still like playing with my good old PS2 very much, to this day... I fucking regret having sold my beloved Genesis....
+nuk3townusa I forgot to mention that I actually managed to obtain a lot from it because of how well preserved it was and because of the many many games I included with it (my entire collection). I take care of my consoles a lot and keep them pristine, you know?
All things considered, you did a very good deal. I know there's some personal attachment involved, but let's face it, the PS2 is arguably the greatest console ever made, the genesis can't even be compared to it.
That's why I said "arguably", why be so defensive about it? The games library can be used as decisive factors, the PS2, the Super Nes, etc.. They are on a different level compared to everything else.
Honestly I've played the whole thing, it's kind of a slog. I love the visuals and the soundtrack, but the actual game gets pretty repetitive and it feels half baked.
I did some research on the issue and the issue seems to be the VA4 variant of the genesis model 2. The VA4 is a 3/4 motherboard model (you can see the heat shield through the vent on the bottom doesn't completely cover the vent) and the VA4 will have square cutouts in the heat shield visible from the bottom. Earlier models like the VA1, VA1.8, etc work fine.
Any chance of a James and Mike Monday with Sonic 3 & Knuckles? I thought I heard you guys said you were going to play it soon after the end of the JMM episode of Sonic 2. Either way, love the work guys.
PRO TIP!!! - I had this SAME freezing issue back in the 90's. Happened with a few games - Tempo and Knuckles Chaotix. Chaotix I returned to Toys R Us a bunch of times because of it. BUT I grew skeptical that this many copies of the game were actually broken. I took another look at my Gen 2/32x setup and decided to mess around. I came to the conclusion the issue was caused by the 32x shifting or wobbling just ever so slightly. When I popped the game in, and then started to just move the Genesis enough to rattle the 32x a tiny bit, it froze - I'm talking miniscule movements which were even caused by moving the controller cable attached to the Genesis slightly. I remember getting this fixed by removing the spacer between the 32x and the Genesis, and possibly also the electromagnetic shield plates. At that point the 32X was making better contact inside the Genesis and stopped freezing on me. Might be why the Gen 1 model works better with this game than the Gen 2 model - installation on there didn't require you to use that spacer. Hopefully this helps you out!
Pressing A is a recall for your partner character to bring them back to you from wherever they are. B can also be used to grab and throw your partner, which is useful in certain situations, especially when bouncing around on springs. Each character also has a special ability: Knuckles can climb walls and glide, Mighty can cling to walls and wall-hop, Espio can run on walls and ceilings, and Vector can air-dodge and climb, if I remember correctly.
i would think that they would clean their cartridges and systems as the contacts can become dirty. Wouldn't that be something if the guy that created that save is watching this video, thinking "i saved there in the game i had", but obviously no way of knowing that it was his cartridge, or he could be dead..........
The game was originally suppose to star Sonic and tails. But much as I remember. Since I never played it. That there was something wrong with the game that didn't work out. So they change it. They change sonic model to the armadillo. Tails model still in the game. But as a bug. and you have to do a debug mode to get it. I think the game freezes if you have tails along.
Sonic Crackers was the name of a prototype of Chaotix that was on a regular Genesis with Sonic & Tails. For some reason they decided it would be better to have Knuckles and his buddies star in the game, instead of Sonic himself.
Back in the day, I got the 32X for this game. And mine still works to this day. The game was pretty fun as I know, though the bad ending is frakked up as it has the Super Metal Sonic flying in the background of a burning city. That says it all right there. Still, it is a good game, and considering the other games on it aside from the Vectorman game, that's not a hard thing to do sadly. Ah well, I had fun with it, and hope that someday the game will see a port somewhere... Hey, if DK64 got a port to the WiiU so long after Microsoft bought Rare, anything is possible.
Tropical Freeze truly is a masterpiece, and a hidden gem amongst the Wii U library. I only hear the hardcore crowd talk about it! It took me a while, but I completed the game in its entirety. Getting all puzzle pieces and record-breaking those hidden levels...Gah...
I'm glad you wanted to play this MIke! This game is really a gem to play! To the uninitiated, this game is definitely off-putting so to speak. It has a pretty easy learning curve though once you get used to it. This game has some of the most unique special stages in ANY Sonic related game ever made (as you clearly saw lol!)! Boy, am I glad I am not the only one who had this problem.. I've had my fair share of issues getting this game to work myself. My conclusion is that the 32X units all vary in quality. Some work great and some are total shit. I have gone through 4 of them in my life and my current one is on it's last leg (it was good to me for many years). I think it is time we get a repro console or adaptor that will run 32X games (and if that exists already someone PLEASE let me know). For all the issues I have had, plus what you and James just went through, I wonder why Sega never decided to ever port this on some Sega collection or at least give it a digital only port. It would have been perfect for the "Sonic Gems Collection" on Gamecube back in the day but never made the cut I guess. Maybe Sega doesn't have much faith in it.. That is sad because it's a great game! Keep up the good work you two!
i think i remember playing this when i was little, but the colors were different...i think that even when it's working for you guys, the color palate is being weird. i definitely remember a sonic game with that weird rubber band thing, but it wasn't all neon like this.
I've had this game and the hardware to play it with for years and never had any problems. All mega drives I have tried have worked with it. Strange. Maybe because mine are all European PAL stuff. Retro consoles are unpredictable sometimes I guess. I like this game. I'm very happy that I got to see Mike and James play it.
I got my copy at launch along with the 32x. it still works with no issues on both my model one and model 2. plugged them into many tvs over the years and never ran into any problems.
LOL!!! I like how Mike felt like he had to clarify the fact that it was the console that had 800 wires up its ass. no shit Mike hahahaha. I love cinnemassacre.
I had these EXACT same issues with my 32X as a kid. I swapped out 2 or 3 32X units and spent hours on the line with Sega Tech Support. Hello there
With that said, Chaotix is a mixed bag IMHO.
So it's got that in common with the Virtual Boy then pretty much
ooOO
That explains why I never had the issues James and Mike are having.
That would explain the fucked up colors
Yupp, I hade the same issue when I got my 32X and pushing the ribbon cable back in fixed it.
Maybe the 32X would work if James hadn't shot an arrow through it on a pyre :P
I don't think the Genesis can't handle this much blast processing.
The Omnilution 2.0 it still does what nintendon't, though.
You might say it's a bit....chaotix
roguecactus7 Nintendont give a fuck what Geneisays
Damn processing, stop being so blast!
mmm, blasty
this game basically just looks like the 90s exploded and someone put the aftermath on a sega 32x cart.
The fact that they're playing it on a shitty old television that's had the red burnt out of the picture is like the pièce de résistance.

No but there was a Chex Cereal game. Chex Quest. You guys should play that.
Wow, wonder if someone from cinemassacre read this post lol you got your wish
I loved that avgn episode
There's nothing like James and Mike in the middle of the night.
Moonbeam I'll leave a joke insert to someone else
"There's nothing like James and Mike in the middle of the night" fingering each others bumholes
When do they actually record these? I always watch them Monday morning.
Josh Teixeira They record them once a month actually. each 4 videos is usually one session.
Mighty was actually an original concept drawing for the main character for the Sonic games before they settled on a Hedgehog.
And even further, early prototypes of Chaotix (supposedly as part of a cancelled game called Sonic Crackers, which got reworked into Chaotix) featured both Sonic and Tails as (playable) characters. They were eventually scrapped - Sonic got replaced by Mighty (simple sprite redraw and palette switch), while Tails is mostly entirely removed.

segasonic the hedgehog (1993-J) starred sonic, #raytheflyingsquirrel, and mighty armadillo. I was unable to emulate it properly, because it was a trackball arcade game.
Same goes for Ristar. His stretchy arms were actually a scrapped concept from when Sonic was planned to be a rabbit
@@tokyohanamura That's really cool! I didn't know that.
Damn it Processing, why are you being so Blast?!

It's the ribbon connectors inside the system. One of them isn't making good contact.
I agree. The game looks like it was made that way on purpose
The colors are off Mike. Everything is more pinkish. I noticed you mentioned Sonic near the end of the video, so when you guys played it must've looked normal. Maybe a capture card glitch

I had a Genesis model 1 from 1991 until 2001. I sold it to be able to buy a PS2 at launch. While I still like playing with my good old PS2 very much, to this day... I fucking regret having sold my beloved Genesis....

I forgot to mention that I actually managed to obtain a lot from it because of how well preserved it was and because of the many many games I included with it (my entire collection).
I hope you guys keep doing these shows, it really does brighten an otherwise dull Monday.
I want to get this game! I love the art style. It's so coooool.
Chaotix Credit Card
*A BAT-CREDIT CARD?!*
TheMrRuttazzo *A CAT-CREDIT CART?!* *_cue Looney Tunes melody_*
Now I'm thinking of Rouge pulling a card from her cleavage.
Damn sexy bat...
rofl thanks for taking the time hooking all that up, props for figuring out the TV issue omg
Any chance of a James and Mike Monday with Sonic 3 & Knuckles? I thought I heard you guys said you were going to play it soon after the end of the JMM episode of Sonic 2. Either way, love the work guys.
"If you're a serial killer you'll like this game", they said. Board James, is that you?
Did James finally cutoff his sideburns?
Dang I kept wondering why he looks different! Thank you!
Tbh sega should port this game way more , it really underrated and fun
Pressing A is a recall for your partner character to bring them back to you from wherever they are. B can also be used to grab and throw your partner, which is useful in certain situations, especially when bouncing around on springs.
Each character also has a special ability: Knuckles can climb walls and glide, Mighty can cling to walls and wall-hop, Espio can run on walls and ceilings, and Vector can air-dodge and climb, if I remember correctly.
It's like a friggin' escort mission. The worst kind. You cannot even ditch the sucker, cause you're permanently attached to him. Oh, the nightmare.
Interesting. I have a model 2 Genesis with a 32X and I've never had problems with Chaotix. It was always one of my favorite games for the console.
it looks like an early version of sonic heroes...looks fun.
awesome, classic video game played this at a neighbor's house when I was 12 in 1996
The color is off.
my god your right that color is way off I think they tried adjusting the television monitor etc.
GameStation3 really??? I didn't notice but now you say it it does look a little saturated
oh baby that purple tint is like daggers on my eyes
i would think that they would clean their cartridges and systems as the contacts can become dirty.
Wouldn't that be something if the guy that created that save is watching this video, thinking "i saved there in the game i had", but obviously no way of knowing that it was his cartridge, or he could be dead..........
"or he could be dead........" and watching the video from the afterlife. Hopefully it makes his soul happy to know that his save was used here. RIP
Title cards are back! I hope any upcoming Nerd episodes will have these too.
Guys please play Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze! Its insanely hard but super fun.
I dare you to beat the "K-Levels! ;)
Tropical Freeze truly is a masterpiece, and a hidden gem amongst the Wii U library. I only hear the hardcore crowd talk about it!
It took me a while, but I completed the game in its entirety. Getting all puzzle pieces and record-breaking those hidden levels...Gah...
Its and amazing game, perfectly balanced, beautiful graphics and an outstanding ost.
Damnit James. I love it when you talk shop about systems and how they work. Brings up so much nostalgia of trying to set up old consoles. Love it. :D
am i the only one loving how retrowav this looks? reminds me of menus in sonic cd reedition. i would like to play other sonic games with this style
gurozawa needs a Romona Vektroid soundtrackn
It's not supposed to look like that.
Not sure why it came out looking like this but I love the retina burning colors.
My second favorite knuckle dragger.
Allie Fettig are you real?! :o
VMUboy nope
Allie Fettig 😔
14:15 "I just think it's funny to play as a- ...What the f*ck?"
pokemon!
I love the colour palette in this game
The game looks extremely frustrating to play just looking at it.. the rubber band thing just looks like a huge hindrance
"It's not a Sonic game, it's an offshoot and shouldn't be played 100% as a Sonic game.. Ever..."
The rubber band does not restrict your movement, though. It just forces your CPU-controlled companion to follow you.
i think i remember playing this when i was little, but the colors were different...i think that even when it's working for you guys, the color palate is being weird. i definitely remember a sonic game with that weird rubber band thing, but it wasn't all neon like this.
So this is what its like to play a game on acid.
14:08 I just re-watched the Nintendo Power video yesterday! dat reference.
Now You should do Mortal Kombat 2 for 32X
If You have it
Mateusz Mugen where the fuck the anime girl came out in? For the life of me I can't remember
That's Julie from Bakugan my friend.
Part of me was hoping the save they were playing on didn't get all the rings to see their reaction to the bad ending.
this game was one alot of drugs.
Do you guys clean the contacts on both the game & console? Maybe that's why it's freezing up?
You guys should play Freedom Planet which is an awesome Sonic like game for PC, Mac and Wii U.
Have you played this video then it froze because of a bad connection but you thought the game froze?
I Love this Game
Why Sega Did Not make a Remake of This Game?
(Door Into The Summer)
I've had this game and the hardware to play it with for years and never had any problems. All mega drives I have tried have worked with it. Strange. Maybe because mine are all European PAL stuff. Retro consoles are unpredictable sometimes I guess. I like this game. I'm very happy that I got to see Mike and James play it.
You can call me Kncukles unlike Sonic i don't chuckle
I got my copy at launch along with the 32x. it still works with no issues on both my model one and model 2. plugged them into many tvs over the years and never ran into any problems.
GREAT Game!
it would be if it didnt have the rubber band
Not that great honestly.
LOL!!! I like how Mike felt like he had to clarify the fact that it was the console that had 800 wires up its ass. no shit Mike hahahaha. I love cinnemassacre.
