Woodturning - Spalted Apple Core

  • I got this piece of Apple wood from my mom’s house in Ohio. I let it dry for quite a while, but as you’ll see in the video when I started to hollow out the core, it was steaming (that’s not smoke you’ll see). I had to put the bowl blank in an oven for a couple of days to finish the drying process. This generated some cracks in the bowl which I filled with epoxy resin.
Once I got the piece roughed out, I found a little bit of very interesting spalting which made for a nice figuring in the final piece.
Overall, I love the way this came out. Nothing fancy, just good solid woodturning techniques on a very nice piece of hardwood. Fruitwood is just so much fun to work with!

I wish you would stop more often and explain why you are doing what you are doing and what you are using. Beautiful piece!

I thought you were just fooling us and just going to turn it all away using different tools and orientations. But then you finally let us see what had been revealed, and that was pretty impressive, sniffing out the best part of the insides. Very neat piece.

P.S. I like an occasional slow down to get a peak of the grain. Just saying.

Thanks! Agreed...apple is really nice to work with. The spalted sections were a bit soft, but the unspalted sections were very hard and finished to such a nice, smooth grain.

Que madera espectacular por sus vetas, sus colores y sus detalles. El diseño le hace honor a la belleza del manzano y el producto final es una obra de arte. Gracias!

Yeah, it ended up being a much nicer piece of wood than I expected.

Really like the shape/style. Nice grain pattern. Think a lot of turners who watch your videos would like it if you showed the name/label of the products you use. Just a suggestion…I know I would like to see what you are using. 😊

Thank you, Once again for sharing your skills. What is your sled that you use at the band saw to put your wood in?

I know you used the Easy Wood Tools
Yorkshire Grit Woodturners Abrasive Paste - Original on the first coat. Do you mind me asking what you used for the final coat?
