Make no mistake, I LOVE the original but, as an older man, listening to this I understand the retrospective look back through more “experienced” eyes. It strips away everything but what the original message is. I love the strings.

DSOTM wouldn't have existed without Waters, no doubt and he deserves a lot of credit, but not as much as he gives himself. Pink Floyd can and has existed without him, and still sounds like Pink Floyd. This doesn't sound like Pink Floyd, it sounds like a high school cover band.

I'm 73 years old, and I've been a huge Floyd fan from the very beginning----way back to the late 60's. When Roger Waters left Pink Floyd, calling the band "a spent force," I was hugely disappointed in him. I always knew he was arrogant, yet I also always appreciated the major contribution he made to the group with his great song writing ability. He was truly a conceptual artist extraordinaire. But his massive ego got in the way, and fueled most of the discord within the band. After he left, under David Gilmour's more benevolent leadership, the band proved Waters wrong, coming out with some great albums and performing some of the greatest concerts in rock history.... David has often said that Waters' style was too lyric driven, at the expense of the music. This remake of Time proves Gilmour was right.

I'm a 67-year-old Rock guitarist and big Pink Floyd fan since the release of DSOTM in 1973.
Growing up in the 60s and 70s I was exposed to all the great guitarists of that era, Hendrix, Beck, Blackmore, Moore, Santana, Clapton, Bloomfield, West, and many more. I saw quite a number of them perform live, including Pink Floyd, twice.
None of them inspired me as much as David Gilmour. The feel and emotion in his phrasing, the rise and fall in his soaring solos, the 4 step bend, and the patience, yes patience. Gilmour says more with a couple of notes and bends than most guitarist do playing a bajillion notes a second!
To me there's an emptiness I'm hearing in the songs I've heard so far from this DSOTM Redux album. The emptiness is the absent of David Gilmours' guitar and vocals.
Waters is doing the Leonard Cohen type thing in at least the songs I've heard so far on the album. Waters never had a good singing voice, even at the height of his career; I'd say it's well below average compared to other professional Rock singers.
So I imagine today he can barely sing at all, so the Leonard Cohen thing is not a surprise.

Everyone can (and will I'm sure) do the same to understand Roger's reasons for doing this and of course he has every right to produce another version, whether PF fans like it or not. He is 80 after all, and doesn't really give a damn what anyone else thinks.

I've been more than happy with the original for 50 years so I will exercise my freedom of choice and leave this new album alone. It seems fantastic to me that there are two versions that are so extremely antagonistic, but that at the same time can complement each other. I think there was no need to make this album, but it seems like a very brave stance for Roger Waters to take, even knowing the criticism that was going to fall on him. Personally, it is an album that I like, especially because of how dark and minimalist it is in contrast to the original, which by the way seems fantastic to me and one of the greatest albums of all time, along with Amarok by Mike Oldfield and Equinoxe by Jean Michel Jarre. A hug.

If this is that slow ... what on earth is "Us and Them", gonna sound like ? !!! 🤪 Anyone who buys the vinyl ... which will be played on a turntable at 33 & 1/3 speed are going to stick it on 45 speed to see if it's any better....Well it will be faster. Lex is absolutely right ... If you want to record this sort of music, then do it with new material. I have a feeling this could end up being called "Backside of the Moon" It is a shame because Roger Waters solo albums are really good, and live in concert, he is spectacular. This is like a track that got rejected from The Final Cut, and was somewhat too self indulgent. Byeee Jim X

I guess maybe I was about five or six when Dad handed me the tape of dark side of the moon. In time was just one of those songs that, even though I didn’t know the meaning of it at the time, it just stood out to me. I don’t know if it was the sound of all those clocks at the beginning that drew me in, but that’s just one of those songs that you hear and instantly remember. It was probably the song that truly got me hooked on Pink Floyd. It was when I discovered that I didn’t always like to hear the same things over and over. I know Pink Floyd’s catalog back and forth, as well as the intra-band turmoil of the past 40 years, and this sounds like Roger did it out of spite. Roger still chaffs at how the band continued without him, believing that it was his lyrics (almost alone) that sold 250 million albums worldwide and made Pink Floyd one of the biggest and most iconic bands in history. This is Roger stripping away all the sounds of Pink Floyd and distilling the songs down to only the words to show everyone the power of his words over their music - and failing. Roger is a great lyricist, one of the greatest in the history of rock and “Time” (which he wrote at only 29) might just be my favorite song of his, but without David, Nick, and Richard, those lyrics are just words on a piece of paper. Those lyrics became a song with the band. The band gave the song and Roger’s lyrics power and meaning. This solo effort by Roger is meaningless except as a testament to the bitterness that still resides in the heart of a now-80-year-old man.

John Edginton interviewed David Gilmour in I think 2003. David really kept to the high road, but he referenced to his concern with the band maintaining the balance between the music and the vocals, that each should be strong and be able to stand on its own. As Roger hit his stride with writing lyrics this became more of a rub, as the musically spare nature of The Wall demonstrated. It was still a good album but focused on what was being said. Ever the nice guy, David, when prompted, did not want to criticize, but did quietly offer that The Wall had "no soul". David did point out that "Comfortably Numb" was their last great collaboration. For me this version of "Time" also had no soul. Too bad.

Sadly, Roger can no longer sing so has to talk/sing all the time. I think his feud with David has led him to remove all traces of guitar from the track. To me the track sounds like the kind of thing Roger would bring to Pink Floyd and they would take it by the scruff of the neck and liven it up with drums and guitar solo to appear on DSOTM.

I could see right away you didn't care much for it. If you really want to hear the origins listen to the original band with Syd Barrett who unfortunately had mental health issues from LSD and was kicked out of the band soon after David Gilmour arrived. I would recommend Arnold Layne and See Emily Play (my personal favorite). These are the psychedelic era songs and their are really weird videos if your interested.

Going to listen to the original after this is over to put that great taste back in my mouth, after this version dried it out to squirrel jerky.
Your comments are spot on the spoken version verse the brilliant singing version with the band. Alexia said underwhelming that was a true statement. But Rodger has the right to do what he likes it’s his song. No man is an Island and sometimes you need a band.

I believe the many are not getting it. If you are only looking for the music, and not the lyrics (intention) of what this song is about, than you've missed much of what PF / Waters was all about. Those that can feel the words as powerfully as the music are among the fortunate. I believe the more basic feel of the music and an appreciation of the man himself goes a very long way.

I think it sounds good. I'm a huge Floyd fan and if you were expecting this to be Floyd, I think you were setting yourself up for disappointment. I actually get a nice chill vibe from it. It's different and it doesn't replace the original, but it's not supposed to. This is not Pink Floyd, and you really should not compare it. You guys are too hung up on the original. How many times can you really listen to the original. I love Dark Side, but I can't remember the last time I sat down to listen to it because I've played it so much in my life. Open your mind to alternate versions and different interpretations of songs. This would fit well with the lockdown sessions. You should comment on those recordings. I think that's what he was going with these new Dark Side songs. Although I may disagree, I still love your reactions. Keep up the good work! :o)

One of the things that makes the original great is how easily the listener can become the protagonist. There's so much going on and at such a pace that when you hear the lyric "the time is gone, the song is over" you think to yourself what, the track's finished already? Which is the very point the song is trying to make. Sadly this version fails to make any such impact, it drags like an old man rambling on sbout the past.

Time is, in my opinion, arguably the best song on what is arguably, in my opinion the best rock album ever made. Roger Waters is the creative genius responsible for it. For that reason, I think you have to give Roger Waters a wide berth and approach this album with a very open mind. That being said Waters must expect this project to be compared directly with his masterpiece. He couldn't (or shouldn't) have expected it to be as good without the other creative components like Nick Mason's drumming, David Gilmore's voice and Richard Wright's keys. I'll still purchase this LP because I think it's historically important(in the realm of rock history). And I'm hoping I'll find some gems on the rest of it. PS, Nick Mason said Roger sent him an advanced copy and he thought it was brilliant.

The Leonard Cohen mention made me laugh, because that was EXACTLY the same vibes I got from it when I first heard it. I think it’s a shame that Roger saw fit to “reimagine” a work of art that so many people hold dear. Good for him, I suppose…but I’d much rather he did a reimagining of his own work, like Radio KAOS, rather than to tarnish the greatness of DSOTM. That being said, I like a great deal of his solo work, but maybe my favorite is “Picture That” from his last album. To me, THAT one sounds more like a modern Waters era PF than anything off of The Endless River.

If you hate RW's new version of Time, you're going loathe and despise(this may be understatement) RW's new version of Money. That being said, the new Time isn't that bad, the new middle section does evoke regret and sorrow, like the lyrics, and I'm sure RW found leaving the guitar solo out to crap on David Gilmour a happy coincidence...
The thing to keep in mind for RW's new version of Dark Side: you will not get a powerful music experinece(unless understated and downplayed/stripped down is your taste), nor will you find great singing, RW is rapping/narrating instead of singing.
RW wrote the songs, he has the right to redo the songs

When I first heard DSOM over 50 years ago (!!) on a friend's quadraphonic 8 track cartridge player in his car, I immediately got a similar system for mine! I'll never forget the sounds of the song "Money" as the "boom chick a boom" tingle of cash registers and coins swirled in a clockwise direction around the insides of the car. The entire album was AWESOME! (Unfortunately, 8 track cartridges were even worse than cassette tapes for getting chewed up.)

But since I know that no original copy has come to harm by the creation of this reflective exercise by a man whose vision was so integral to its creation, I find it hard to find fault with what he has chosen to do here. Nobody is being asked to choose between these versions. In fact, I don't think I would feel like a genuine Floyd fan, or be respecting their memory, if I felt the need to condemn it.

It's also interesting about members doing remakes of songs they were involved with, when they were in their bands, like Paul McCartney did with Give My Regards To Broad Street and Steve Hackett did with his two Genesis Revisited albums. Some of it is good, some of it isn't.
I'm a big Pink Floyd fan. But I think in this case that it's quite a tough challenge for one member to remake part of their back catalogue, as all of them have such sonic landscapes.
