Some incorrect information here. Frosting happens when the paint sprayed from the airbrush dries before hitting the surface of whatever you're painting. Can happen due to a combination of humidity and temperature. Using a retarder when thinning will help reduce frosting.
Thank you for correcting me! 😅😅😅 guys read this up! It's really good :)
Tip 1. When you are cleaning your airbrush, increase the air pressure by ten to fifteen psi. Tip 2.use lint free scientific tissue wet with thinner to clean the inside of your paint cup and the outside of airbrush. 3. A 1:2 ratio of paint to thinner will help you achieve candy paint( and is my go to ratio in general) 4.apply photo etch parts with glue before you paint to ensure a strong hold( most hobby glues eat paint). 5. Use an explosion proof exhaust fan when painting with lacquer because the fumes are flammable( the fan is usually more powerful as well and will keep your environment fume free). 6. The distance you hold your part away from the spray will change the texture of the finished paint 7. Use a moisture trap as water will cause a splatter effect and ruin your finish( I do my painting near a fish tank so I use one on my tank and my gun) 8. Make sure you use the rapid drying thinner for metallic colors or the metal flakes will sink into the paint and effect the metallic look 9. Always use the slower drying thinner for non-metallic colors to ensure a perfect finish 10. Always use a static free brush on your parts to get rid of the static electric buildup from sanding that will attract dust to your paint job
I keep seeing your hair brushing against the top of your set-up. You could say it's... hair-brushing.
Hahahaha hair brushing!
I know im bit too late but 1 tips
Always paint you Gundam
*"in Good mood"*
Seriously the result is surprising
Have to be careful sometimes though, there is a difference between 'Dry' and 'Cured' If you plan on masking, weathering, or other surface modification, if you don't let the paint cure enough, you can run the risk of the primer or other paint layers lifting. Also, Drying/Curing time will depend on if you are using Lacquer, Enamel, Acrylic, or Oil.
I would also be careful using thinners right on the plastic parts for removing paint, especially enamel, that can make your parts brittle and shatter.
Great videos btw, looking great.
Definitely great tip! Thank you buddy! And yes enamels are killers 😅

Answered all my questions here! Thanks man!
Welcome man!
Good advice. I have learned from this video.
Loving the tutorials!! A couple of questions if that’s cool?
1) How do you decide where to add the custom panel lines?
2) Do you always panel line on white Gundams in black panel liner? If not, how do you decide what colour to panel line in?
3) How do you decide when to add weathering?
Your tips would be greatly appreciated!! 😃
Hi! 1. I decide where to add based on the part itself, if it's blank, I wanna add details. And the color of the panel line should fits your theme! So you should decide yourself what color it will be :) and weathering itself please add according to logic, obviously on the legs will have more and then slowly reduced to when you're at the top! Hope that helps bro!
Good tutorial! From my experience can say that paint ratio heavily depends on type of paints and manufacturer. Personally, I use GW(citadel) and Vallejo paints, cause I came to gunpla hobby from Warhammer, and more used for those brands, and those paints quite thicker than Tamiya in general. But they got an "air" line of paints specially for airbrushes, but still IMHO they may use a bit thinner. So you need to try to understand, as the author says)
great tutorial bro! tips are on point.
from my experience, spraying gloss top coat is very different from how i spray matte top coats. if you want that glossy top coat you have to spray it wet, if not it will get grainy and will require more layers to get a mirror finish. this will save you the polishing and sanding step that is common when you 'dust' it on. learned it from spraying cars where a gloss finish is almost always desired.
Thank you! That's what I'm looking for! Good tip man! 😃
Really usefull thanks.
Nice sir...
Thank you po sa mga tips. :)
GREAT TIPS! Like everyone says, practice makes perfect! You have to get your hands dirty and experiment to see what works for you.
Definitely dude! Practice x 100
I’m actually hoping to get a compressor and airbrush pretty soon, so here’s hoping I can start practicing all these technique sooner than later!
Definitely waiting for you to join the airbrush family here! 😃😃😃
Nailed it again G! Big props man! (Need to get my f16 out the way so I can start my MG Seed Zaku) also gravity brush arrived!
One thing I can say for everyone for airbrushing primers, give Ultimate Modelling Products Primers a try. They come in grey, black and white, and don't need thinned for airbrush as it is literally like smooth liquid. It's also called Ammo One Shot by Mig and Badger Stynylrez (seriously that last one?! Who? I mean...yeesh!!)
Congrats on getting your gravity fed airbrush! I know you have fun and much better experience with them! And thanks for the recommendation! I can't get it but I'm sure this will be helpful for anyone reading the comments 😃
Hahaha.Exia in progress 🤩🤩

LETS GO!
Nah too low
#studiog1mill
Be careful when cleaning by closing the front of the airbrush and then pulling the trigger. For airbrushes that are of poor quality, they may cause hardening and clogging of the trigger because thinner and paint may blow back into the area around the trigger.
if you could make demonstration videos where you go step by step on a project to go along with your guide i think it would be a great walkthrough!
I think I do majority of that in my build videos! Just imagine me narrating the steps and you'll get there 😅
Yay another tutorial for air brushing! Also can you do a tutorial on the different types of paints?
Definitely will cause there's lots to cover!
@@StudioGundam Thanks!
@@StudioGundam yea differing types of paints can get overwhelming. especially if you cant afford to ruin paint trying to do things. Like, Acryllics are a pain to airbrush (for me anyway)
I recommend your videos to my kith and kins. We are new and we love to do works with spray paints. Please please can you do a video painting a gunpla with spray paints only.
Definitely will put that into consideration 😃
Sounds like it's okay to use lacquer topcoat over other kinds of paint as long as the other paint is completely dry and cured first.
Always informative man, really looking forward to your next tutorial! A lil question, do you sand all the part's surface before priming or just straight wash it?
I only sand the part i customize or the part where the nub marks are too obvious :)
It's gonna save so much time not to sand all the part. Thanks for replying, and keep droppin em rad tutorials for the community!
Good tips.... I think i have alot of good luck model to redo.... Hehehe
Good luck model Hahahaha 😂😂😂
Hey there Studio G. Great videos regarding painting. I'm in the process of using spraycans before I go down the airbrush route.
But I want your thoughts of fluorescent (glow in the dark paint). How would you go about applying it on your kit if it's possible?
Started doing Gunpla recently and love your channel! Very informative and well explained!!
Quick question for painting! Before starting painting, when you sandpaper the parts to remove the nubs, is it recommended to finish with a higher grit(2000-3000) or less?
Keep up the good work!
Think you can make an detailed vid on Kitbashing? I sometimes wonder if anyone on UA-cam has ever made a vid on what kinda pieces would work well for kitbashing, as well as how to use drill bits to make pieces fit. Love you vids
Kit bashing is something that can't be taught to be honest cause there's no guidelines on how to do it. And everybody's situation is very different 😅
@@StudioGundam That's pretty true, guess its all just trial and error. But think you can drop 1 recommendation so that way people don't buy kits and kind out they aren't compatible? (Obviously research is needed for kitbashing too but not easily findable from my experience ;.; ) Thanks chief.
hey man can you do a tutorial on metalic, flat, candy tone etc... you explained things well.. awesome.. 😁
Definitely will in the future! 😃
@@StudioGundam oooowriight!! =)
I’m currently airbrushing lacquer but am thinking of moving to acrylic due to the smell even with a booth. Would be cool hearing about the comparisons with smell and durability
I prefer lacquer over acrylic anytime! The smell is okay as long as your using a respirator or a mask. Anyway it's totally up to you buddy :) lacquer does provide a more simple approach to getting better finish :)
Love the vids and work. Do you wash kits just for the mold release reasons or sanding dust, because I see you wash before customization or scribing. I struggle with this because after I prime I occasionally have to fix mistakes then prime again.just trying to get the best paint job possible.
Good bro thanks for the tutorial!.
Because i always messed up with my airbrush 😞😂
No problem! Now I hope that you don't mess up anymore but hey! Experience right???
@@StudioGundam yeah dude thank you!
#StudioG50k
My question is if you decide not to custom paint your gunpla and just want to add water decals should a topcoat be applied before, after, or both an application of water decals? For the water decals will be using a liquid-like Mr. Setter. If a topcoat is needed should it be matte, semi-gloss, or gloss?
Thank you so much for the amazing info
One question how do you do mix your paint like when you you try to get a specific color
Again thank you so much
Hi so when you mentioned TopCoat and I checked in the description to find a link on Amazon, but I couldn't find one. I was wondering which TopCoat are you referring to bc all I could find was a spray can and was confuse if there's one for airbrushing or not. Ty for the help
I'm still confuse about cleaning the airbrush. Do I just put the used thinner in the AB cleaner pot? And when will I use it again? And how about when I want to change paint during Ab session.
Sir! nice content! nice production too. Have you ever used ultrasonic cleaner? if yes, what liquid? Thank you Justin!
Yes I use ultrasonic cleaner in my builds you can check them out in my build videos :)
Que herramienta sugieres para medir la presion del aerografo?
(tengo la IWATA - NINJA JET)
ILABAS ANG PENTEL PEN!
You mentioned multiple thin layers when painting. How can you tell if one thin layer is complete, and how long do you leave to dry before applying the next thin layer?
Do you need two airbrushes, one for primer and one for color? Also what size do you need .2mm, .3mm or .5mm?
Greetings, StudioG
I have questions about air brush.
First, I’m kinda hunting for cheap things, but worth to buy.
Recently, I just found a portable airbrush at some online shop.
So, I am wondering is it worth to buy?
If you're starting out with Spray Cans what's the top coat process? Is there a spray can version for top coats?
I have never airbrushed before but i am a paint sprayer for cars in motor repairs, so the paint side i am already pretty clued up on but im curious to how people arrange their parts before paint without getting confused what part is what, its the main thing holding me back from doing my own custom paint job, more worried i wont know what part is what when organising them and when going back to it to put it all together, if anyone has any advice or tips i'd very much appreciate it, still relatively knew to gunpla building!
pls do mirror gloss on your next builds 😬😬
That's wayyyyyy too hard hahaha
Hello from france. Thanks for all the tips.
Could you make a video about the different step for building? And the different order for types of paints? I had a lot of issue with Enamel damaging parts.
If you use enamel straight on the plastic definitely you'll run into some problems with it damaging the plastic so put on a top coat first. A thin layer will do :) and also the steps are basically the one I'm narrating in my build videos :) just tie them up together and you should get the entire build process :)
@@StudioGundam Thanks for the answer, I will watch it again so. I have find out that a gloss coat is safe and make the enamel going easier in panel line for exemple
I know that you've mentioned that industrial spraycan is not as good as the one that designed for plastic, but, do you have sometips in using the industrial one? I'm really, really, really new in this, and I think tamiya pr mr. Hobby is too expensive for amateur like me :') thanks for this tutorial btw😄😄
What air compressor do you use?
I'm thinking on buying one and I don't really know which one to buy
I dont have easy access to tamiya spray cans? what spray cans are good and can give a very nice finish?
is it necessary to thin the spray primer? I see some people use the primer alone itself and thin the colors separately
Do you preshade your gunpla?
If yes can you make a vid about it?
Whaaat?! You're also from Philippines. You look more like from Japan or South Korea.
justin meron bah kayo lazada o shoppe store sa mga recommended tool kits?
hey, just wondering your opinion on what type of paint I should use. I've done spray painting on bigger (not model) projects and plan to do a lot of test painting before I get to the model. I also did my first LED wiring for the rx78 (Gundam factory design) I want to paint and instead of having clear plastics for the lights I ended up sanding the plastic thin enough for light to shine through (I know it got less than .5mm thick in some areas). If I end up using lacquer or enamel, do you think these paints could potentially end up deforming these areas? Love your videos btw and definitely inspired me to push my limits on this build I got going.
sorry I guess I should also mention I will be airbrushing
Serious (non-gunpla related) question, how do you get your hair to stand up like that? What product do you use? With the quarantine right now I might grow my hair out like that.
Also #studiog50k let's go!
Hahaha just normal hair spray but before that gotta blow dry them upwards 😅
are you from the Philippines? you can try pomades! haha try eightwolves pomade :)
@@StudioGundam Cool! I've been trying different products with no success. I guess the blowdryer is what I'm missing lol.
@@amieldelossantos Yes, from Cebu. Might check that out hehe thanks! 😅
Oh snap, I didn't realize you were from back home. What are the Gunpla prices like over there, or do you get all your stuff from Newtype?
Video was super informative. Any tips for a first time painter for doing a candy coat?
I have no idea as well for candy coating 😅😅😅
Sorry@@StudioGundam , Metallic candy paint style. It gives an incredibly shiny finish. So far my research has led me believe that the ALCLAD II paint range is best. I just wanted to know, if you can add a weathering after? I bought a few gunpla sets to practice with until I'm ready to finish with a PG Exia Lighting Model.
Can you do a tutorial about cleaning the parts without using the ultrasonic cleaner?
Just wash them using soap to remove the oil stains and manufacturer chemicals that might be stuck on the surface :) there's rreally nothing to it :)
After priming can you just leave the parts for later?
Can you use enamel thinner to clean your air brush?
Is there’s an alternative if you don’t have a ultrasonic cleaner
I'm asking since I'm not sure if this happened to me. So a while back, I painted a kit, it dried and came out smooth to the touch and didnt chip, but after I top coated it, the kit felt more coarse and could chip easier. Was that frosting or a different problem entirely?
It's because the top coat wasn't thinned enough. Or it might be too thick. Or when you spray it on the paint cans out too course. It happened to me once and since then I sprayed around 15 psi and the problem I solved :)
2:40 Justin! Watch your back someone want to stab you! again! 😉
Anyway, another great video from you! Concise, precise and to the point! Love it! You're doing a great job. 👍
Thanks man! Hahaha nah I don't think she will stab me HHaha
how i can avail models and tools here in the philippines just by using Php? thanks!
Bro you say 10:3.5 means 10ml color and 3ml or 5ml thinner ?
i have the basic compressor where u cant adjust the psi, is it okay
is it bad for painting when its rainy / coudy days? or at night?
Hey, Love the videos you put up. They are really informative. Keep these coming as and when you can. Also I am from India. We have a few gundam builders here. Please consider to ship the kits to India too. Its a humble request. We don't get gundam kits here in India.
Ah I'm sorry man but I don't sell gundam 😂 India doesn't have gundam online store?
@@StudioGundam We have to order the kits on Ubuy.co.in. and the cost of the models in that website is at least 4 - 5 times the original price.
How many coats of primer and color you normally use?
#studio50k
Do I need to prime for
spray paint (spray can)?
what are those little sticks holding the parts called
Is there a way to top coat with spraycans?
great vid man!!! quick question : do you flat topcoat after applying srickers or before stickers ?
Before I think
@@galereach5596 i learn after a while: gloss topcoat -> waterslides -> matt topcoat, hope it helps 🤞
If I wanna make panel lines (with tamiya panel line accent black) do you suggest a pre-top top coat on airbrushed (with acrylic colors) painted parts? Cause I am afraid using thinned cotton swab for removing residuing lines and remove accidentally the original paint...
Yes definitely. And top coat will prevent your plastic from breaking and cracking :)
Studio G Oh, thanks a lot! So.... after airbrushed I use a glossy top coat (also cause waterslide decals slides and fit better), color all the panel lines and at the end a flat top coat. My project is a glossy innerframe and a flat armour.
Why isn't shipping to Philippines supported by newtypehq? Where do you get your tools and kits?
Newtype operates in the US. So that figures and also I get mine here there on online stores here :)
What thinner do you use to mix with primer?
Hello, been looking at your videos for a while, and can i get a tip from you and the viewers on the steps of customing? Do we Panel Line -> Surfacer -> Paint job or Surfacer -> panel lining -> paint job?
And any good recommendation for an airbursh? Im a beginner that plans to use this particular airbrush for the long term, is Iwata eclipse can be used by an amateur like me or should i buy a cheaper one first?
I would say surfacer, paint, panel line, top coat :) iwata eclipse is good, if you can afford it go for it cause airbrushes rarely breaks and you can really go miles with it :)
@@StudioGundam always sand the kit first before painting yes? should i use 600 or more like 1000 for the kit?
Do you use masker when painting?
Does anyone know why the plastic cracks or melts after I use Tamiya black panel linear? How can I prevent this from happening?
Top coat first before doing that cause enamel based paint will crack the plastic :)
@@StudioGundam Thank you will definitely do this on my next build.cheers!!
One question:
Can paint gunpla with gundam markers?
Define markers. Sharpies? Ink markers? Paint markers? In my experience, paint markers like Gundam Markers are made to dry quickly, so it’s very hard to get even finished since you need to apply it in strokes. They’re much more suited to be used for small details.
Bro white colour what primer I have to use
On some occasion, notice that the community recommends sanding the pieces before painting them. Would you also recommend it?
Makes sense since if you did it after it would rub away the paint. After sanding do a pre coat there’s a specific name for it but it allows you to see the imperfections and then you can sand them down. Once it’s all perfect and what not you then spray paint it with your paints. Although that’s what I’ve learned through watching a lot of videos. I’ve never actually painted before but that’s the process I would do with. If the paint is uneven or something then maybe sand it with a high grade sand paper like #3000? I may be completely wrong too btw ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@animepabu5526 thanks
How to paint gundam with plastic injection parts?
Does Frosting occur when particular areas of parts receive to much top coating?
Frosting likes to appear in corners and edges :)
Studio G don’t forget that humidity can also affect the appearance of topcoat! If it’s too wet/cold out, hold off on top coating, as it prevents the solvents from escaping properly.
Which surface did you use??
I see a lot of people using flat strips of what seems to be plastic sheets to "enhance" their decorations... what is it? where can I find it? what should I be searching for?
Those are called pla plates :) perfect for adding details and scratch build. If pla plates are not available try styrene sheet :)
