There is something beautiful in the feeling 'I dont need much'.. I am okay now, with what I have.

I so agree with you on this.
I love that this is a trend, but at the same time it won't change anything if it's just a trend. But hopefully it can make people think and make way for a new mentality.

I saw a different video that explained a problematic aspect of underconsumption core re: poverty that was enlightening to me. It has to do with the aesthetic of underconsuming, mismatched items, repurposing/reusing and fixing items being more palatable coming from people who don’t exist in poverty even though it is the same aesthetic that has existed in poverty and was considered shameful for those experiencing poverty. It was really thought provoking to me.

I think that is very important to keep in mind. Glorifying things other people suffer from or appropriating a look (that is the result of a reality people don't choose) can be very problematic. In this case I still think it is also important to note that we all would benefit from consuming less, so I think it has to be ok to show and talk about underconsumption but of course with intention and care and unfortunately that is something TikTok trends often lack...

I love the fact, that underconsumption is trending. I always preferred more worn out and unkept vibes anyway and if I love something I wear it to death.. Just kinda wish I heard about this trend last winter, I was fixing the hole in my jumper too, done awful job thinking it would be just for gardening now, if only I knew, Could be wearing it now as my badge of honour 😁😁

ya i agree, it sounds like a sm trend which comes like most sm trends- fromthe US whom are the main consuming society and give birth to most sm trends.... like they pumped minimalism and then pumped its ending- like Americans need to PR something in order to make it happen or just to justify it , but also it reflects some of it- regardless of the sm. thers wider aspects like the economy, the political global changes, co**d, globalization, housing market prices rising in this decade. the big companies i think experience sales dropping for years but wont necessary report it. consumption positivity was something that was marketed since the 60' - actually started mainly focusing on "house wife's" and women - there hasnt been such a declined till this decade- probably also the eco awareness an effect and the prices of everything which has never been so high. also second hand (clothing mainly) as a trend and its huge market in the US. people in Europe especially in Germany are so way more frugal and consumed used items always. but its also a cultural thing - with the progress of social and personal aspects of health, life balance and more progressive values. fact is over consumption goes hand to hand allot with poverty and "low class" culture.

I actually like the ‘underconsumption core’ idea. Our society is influenced by TikTok. We know that. It has been shown that TikTok influences the trends. Any trend that offers under consumption is good for me. I hope it takes off. I am however not on TikTok so I only hear of these trends through UA-cam.

I think social media contributes to overconsumption. People fear missing out or just want to feel included. Thankfully, idc about none of that😅. Also, I’ve deleted my last social media(Instagram). I think that if ppl would live a life that is more authentic to themselves rather than trying to fit in, we’d really stop contributing to so much waste. I work in retail and ppl will spend their last dollar on meaningless items. I think it’s an addiction because it provides an escape for them.

Just another female driven trend. For this reason, I have great confidence that it won't last. Something else will come along and distract them. Kind of sad, actually, because I support the concept. Almost everything my wife and I own is from garage sales, thrift stores and hand me downs.
