    Just as with the other shows on here from the 50's and 60's, I enjoy the commercials almost as much as the show. It's amazing how many top shows were sponsored by cigarettes. If not for Philip Morris, I'm not so sure there would have been an "I Love Lucy" - at least not with the same cast.

      Only several child actors I could handle, Curt Russell, Beaver and Wally, and Rusty. Jon Provost was iffy.

    Originally telecast on December 8, 1953. However, this is a June 22, 1954 summer repeat, as Chrysler's Dodge division replaced Speidel watchbands as the series' alternate sponsor in January 1954.

    Ms Hagen quit because she had a 3 year contract and then she was done. One more thing Danny and Jean couldn't stand each other.. Danny and Sheldon Leonard tried to get her to do at least one more season..she refused. Her character had a fatal accident and she was written out. The shows fourth( and final) season on ABC had Danny as a widower the show was retitled ''The Danny Thomas Show''. With ABC getting ready to cancel the series CBS got wind of it. ''Danny'' replaced ''I Love Lucy '' that fall. The show ran another 7 seasons (only one out of the top 10) on CBS.

      CBS was the top network while ABC was even worse than Dumont and was the 4th network at the time. That said, I think the ABC episodes are fresher and funnier than the later CBS episodes.

      I wonder if his dislike of her had to do with her drinking. I'm not saying or implying that it did, just wondering. Esophageal cancer (which also killed Bogart) is almost always associated with both heavy smoking and heavy drinking together, and she died of it in her mid 50's. Danny Thomas was, of course, a smoker too, but rarely drank alcohol.

    This episode was later adapted as 'Kathy's Career', Season 6 (1958) starring Marjorie Lord.

      Aha! I knew "Kathy's Career" had to be recycled, because it made no sense. Unlike Margaret, Kathy was no college dropout. She had a career when she met Danny, and had been a military nurse, and had been previously married. She'd have resolved any marital identity crises long before, but they morphed Kathy into a confused, insecure idiot to pigeonhole her into the rehash of this old script.

    29:12- "'MAKE ROOM FOR DADDY', starring Danny Thomas, is presented alternately by the dependable DODGE dealer in your neighborhood- and THE AMERICAN TOBACCO COMPANY- 'America's Leading Manufacturer of Cigarettes'."

      That's because they made both Lucky Strike and Pall Mall. At the time, Luckies were stable, and Pall Mall was growing - and became the country's leading-selling cigarette by 1960. They stopped making Herbert Tareyton altogether. I knew several people who smoked them right up until they couldn't get them anymore.

    Jorja Curtwright, who appeared as "Lydia", was also the wife of Sidney Sheldon, who was a screenwriter for MGM (and then, Paramount) at the time. Later, he created and mostly wrote "THE PATTY DUKE SHOW" and "I DREAM OF JEANNIE" {which he also produced, and which Jorja made a guest appearance as a fraudulent fortune teller in the first season).....and even later, as a best selling novelist.

      I take it you mean, ANGELA CARTWRIGHT.
      It's just a typo. I make PLEANTY of them myself. My finger tips are fat and crooked so don't hit the right keys many times.

      Actually, Jorja Curtright *was* Mrs. Sidney Sheldon from 1951 through her death in 1985.....and she did appear in this episode. No typo intended. Angela didn't appear in the series until 1957. 🙂

    why did he replace jean h.for Marjorie lord?

    • @fromthesidelines
      @fromthesidelines 2 роки тому +1

      Jean quit after the third season. Danny was *so* angry at her, he decided she'd *NEVER* return to the series again. So he "killed off" 'Margaret'- and 'Danny Williams' became a widower for the fourth season. He also changed the title to "THE DANNY THOMAS SHOW", as a clean break from previous seasons. He also saw to it that Jean's episodes would rarely be repeated in future daytime and syndicated repeats. In fact, the current syndicated/cable version of the series begins with the fourth season.

      The way I heard it, Jean (and later her estate) got control of all her episodes, and somehow Season 4 as well, and that's what kept them out of syndication for so long.
      So, with all that bad blood between Jean and Danny, why did the writers pay tribute to her, in a way, by using her real surname, Verhagen, for the Williams family doctor in subsequent seasons?
