  • Last week I took a trip to Dallas, TX to take my OMM Practical Board exam. I had a lot of time to myself to just reflect and think. I know that I am in a ton of student loan debt right now - but I am at a much better mental health space because I have chosen to work less. It may not be right for everyone, but since the start of the pandemic, we have seen so many healthcare workers just sacrifice so much of themselves for their patients.
    Where do we draw the boundaries? Love to hear your thoughts.

    Thank you Jenny for sharing the real side of medicine. I can relate to identifying myself as our career but I know that’s not right or healthy for my mental space. So thank you for making me not feel alone. I hope you continue your little snippets and videos! Love your content! - OMS-3

      It can be hard to balance school and life. It each year that passes in medical training, it gets better. At least that was my experience ❤️

    Congratulations on passing! Yes, please make a video about Creatine. I have been on the fence about using it. Also, thanks for letting us know about the parttime family medicine option by actual number. All this is so helpful.

    I feel like all healthcare workers need a hug, lots of $, and many vacations. This must have been such a hard two years for you guys. I want you to know that I appreciate you so much. I am a cancer survivor and had my tumor removed almost a year ago and it's still gone!! Give yourself some grace! I am sending good vibes your way!

    My question is how did you make it through residency? I’m at the end of my third year of Med school and I’m so burnt out. From being a black woman all of the micro aggressions and barriers on top of medical school and personal life j feel like I’m fizzling out. And I LOVE MEDICINE. like you said it’s not medicine that’s the issue but the reality of practicing medicine isn’t the same as what people think it is. As I have gone through my rotations all of the resident’s have been completely honest with me and said they are all depressed, and having some of the worst times of their life. And that was through all rotations not just one. I’m afraid if I’m feeling this way now how can I make it another three years? Any advice on getting through med school and residency feeling burnt out? It might be due to practicing in a global pandemic but idk. I’m just stressed and kind of defeated.

      And tbh what everyone wants to say….I think we are able to go on because we are terrified of the crippling debt that is awaiting us 😞

      Being a female minority, working through a global pandemic is HARD! It adds so much additional stress for sure. And residents are the back bone that do the majority of the work without adequate pay. All these things are true.
      Though my experience through residency was a little different. It was hard but I would say that it was the time that I grew the most - as a physician and as an individual. Likely because I was surrounded by the most amazing people. I do find myself still missing residency from time to time, the structured learning and comradery.
      If you love medicine then this is the place for you! Find your people and foster those relationships because finding a place of belonging makes you feel less burnt out. ❤️

      @@drjennale thank you so much for taking time out of your busy schedule to get back to me! I appreciate all your advice! I truly do love medicine and it is my dream even though it gets hard sometimes. I will definitely try to make sure my residency is a place where I feel safe and confortable and that will aid in my growth as a person and physician ! ☺️

    Is an OMM practical a part of level 3? So every DO does it? Or did you do a NMM fellowship that required the practical after?

    • @drjennale
      @drjennale  2 роки тому

      It’s board certification for OMM. Usually done during residency but it is optional.

    Wait I’m confused, I thought you were already a doctor why do you have to take this specific exam

    • @drjennale
      @drjennale  2 роки тому

      Yes! I am but doctors still have to take test to become board certified and then every few years to ensure they’re competent! Medicine continues to change so it’s important to stay current

    Does anyone know anything about part-time residency programs? I've been trying to find more information but it's very difficult to find specific programs (besides Google saying they exist and are rare). I'm a pre-med going into my final year of undergraduate and questioning whether medicine is for me. I'm super excited about healthcare and child neurology specifically but I don't think I'm willing to work more than 40 hours a week for YEARS before getting work flexibility. Could probably manage medical school but would want a "normal life" by the time residency came up. Any insight is highly appreciated :)

    Which scrubs would you recommend? I’m starting residency and looking for some budget options, but still looking good.
    Thanks
