  • Hey guys. This is my review of my Go Fast Camper. Okay so it's actually 7, nearing 8 months now. I get lots of questions about this tent on instagram so hopefully I can answer some questions you may have. I've had this tent for a while and I think I've figured out everything that you might encounter about these tents, it's strengths and its weaknesses.
    There are tons of rooftop tent (RTT) companies out there but none set up and break down faster than the GFC, Go Fast Camper RTT. This was my number 1 choice for a Roof Top Tent because honestly it fit my needs best. Will it fit yours? Probably, but lets find out.

    Also great addition for GO PRO; heres the Ram mount that fits perfectly in the tracks:

    Another clamshell rooftop tent manufacturer used a bungee type cord to hold the sides in. You might be able to hack something up there. When the tent is in use, their's rests on the lower section of the case, ready to be used whenever. Give it a shot, you might be glad you did. peace

      They have a bungee that does that but honestly I haven’t really needed it too much. I’m on the lookout for a camper and I keep going back to GFC. Love having the storage they leave you in whatever rig you have.
    I’m also a huge fan of Subaru’s wish they made one for the Forester. Still using a pickup would leave you tons of space in the bed for gear.

    • @OXFOOT
      @OXFOOT  3 роки тому +1

      Wish I knew if it would fit in a forester or not. I used to have a forester back in the day and the roofs are fairly narrow it can technically be mounted on top of most racks, so maybe it would fit their would just be overhang? Are you looking for something that you can still mount on top or you specifically like the hardshell design? Have you looked at their new super lights? I haven’t seen one in person yet but I know they have them advertised on top of a outback.

      So at the moment I'm torn between a GFC or a Hiker Trailer..

    • @OXFOOT
      @OXFOOT  3 роки тому

      Yeah I think if you went forester the super light would be best but I think if you go with a pick up the GFC is by far my favorite. Especially because the entire back becomes a place to put all of your camping supplies and offroad gear.

      @OXFOOT  3 роки тому

      The joker trailers are quite nice as well. If you want to be able to offroad with them they get a bit expensive. I looked into them for winter/low profile camping at one point and while the entry level ones are really well priced the heavy duty ones seem high.

    - Does the tent lock shut?
    - Does the closing pin freeze at all in the winter or get jammed up with ice?
    - Did you get any extra tent insulation for the winter?
    - have any condensation problems in the winter with a heater or anything?

    • @OXFOOT
      @OXFOOT  3 роки тому +1

      Unfortunately it doesn’t lock, but it is really secure. It wouldn’t open unless you wanted it to, but yeah if someone wanted to open it they could.
      I’ve never had the locking pin freeze up. Sometimes it’s a bit tough to close if ice gets in between where the tent closes but that would be true of any hard shell tent.
      I never ended up getting insulation, I’m usually fine without it.
      I usually only run the heater before I sleep and when I wake up. I don’t run it all night.

      So far I’ve really only had it in a few rain storms and I’ve never noticed any leaking. If it gets wet, even when you close it it’ll still get some air flow from the little holes in the side... that being said, it doesn’t have a rain fly so if the rain is really bad you’d basically have to keep the tent closed.

    Great review! I'm interested in this RTT but I have a concern. And this concern is with all RTTs. I own a 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk. It has the shark fin antenna on the back end of the roof. I would have to add crossbars to the existing factory rack in order to mount this tent. I won't attempt to modify my antenna. I'm concerned if I can mount this tent high enough above the antenna without touching, and after mounting, will it affect my satellite radio reception? I often have to drive long distance to get to camping areas and I'm not about to give up my satellite radio. Any thoughts? Thanks.

    • @OXFOOT
      @OXFOOT  3 роки тому +1

      So I actually cut my antenna to mount this one. I think most RTTs that are low profile you have to. They have a thing in their website that shows you the thing it gets replaced with, looks pretty factory looking in my opinion. I’m not sure how your car is but in the 4Runners the whole antenna is basically empty, the shard in part is empty, only a small chip at the base. I think if you got a high enough roof rack you might be fine. I just happened to have gotten the lowest profile setting you could possibly get with this tent because didn’t use a roof rack. I think if you check and see if Uptop overland has a rack for your Jeep, I’m sure that’ll be tall enough to clear it.

    • @OXFOOT

    • @OXFOOT
      @OXFOOT  4 роки тому

      So I'm not 100% sure how it all works but there are little drainage holes in the rear and the front of the tent and everything drains out. • @OXFOOT
      @OXFOOT  4 роки тому +1

      So I've heard of people putting thin ones in there but I've never been able to do that. Thats the case with most hardshell tents from what I've heard. I'm doing a hardshell tent head to head in the coming weeks so I guess I'll be able to find that out for real soon.
      The tent I feel is pretty cozy and as long as you don't take your whole life up there with you it's enough room., the mattress is a 2 inch thick mattress. I've never had any problems with the mattress myself but I also used to sleep on bare ground back in the day when ground camping. I would say its slightly less comfortable than my old 3" Tepui, but I'm only saying that because its an inch thicker. I honestly can't tell much of a difference. That being said my GF sleeps on it all the time and doesn't complain but started recently using an inflatable mattress pad.

    • @OXFOOT
      @OXFOOT  4 роки тому +3

      I think tent comfort and mattress comfort are really up to the user, but I really don't notice a major difference. I'll probably be doing an updated review soon as my one year of ownership is this month. I'll try to come up with a good way to compare comfort in a way that people watching a video would be able to understand without sitting in it.

      Personally I like the way it handles the wind compared to my old RTT and all of my ground tents. Its hard shell so it stays pretty ridged during the night and it doesn't have a rainfly so nothing really flaps on it.The one thing I haven't tested that might worry me is that because this has cross bars and you can mount things on top, I sort of wonder about the idea of deploying the tent in a windy area and having something like a kayak on top. I've done it many times with my snowboard but those are super aerodynamic. I see a lot of photos with Canoes on top and I just wonder about how that might fair in the wind. That being said, it might be fine, just personally wouldn't do that.

    Hey man, have you ever looked into a wabasto or espar heaters? I know cutting a hole in the roof of your truck and bottom of your camper is scary but you can run a honey comb filter head through to your tent and can run the heater in -40°C and keep your tent toasty warm. Was thinking of doing it to my future gfc rtt. Was just an idea im throwing around haha

    • @OXFOOT
      @OXFOOT  3 роки тому

      It’s for sure something I’d look into. I’m not sure how long I’ll have the 4Runners so I’m not exactly sure I want to cut a hole in it. I’ll probably be buying a beater 1st Gen taco soon and doing a bed rack set up with a tent. That might make more sense in something like that. Either way I’m intrigued. I’ll look into it. Is it the thing that revere overland talked about in his video?

    Any comparisons on Alu-cab or Roofnest Falcon you can make right off the bat? Have you had any other hard shell RTTs?

    • @OXFOOT
      @OXFOOT  3 роки тому

      Funny enough I just started a series reviewing hardshell rooftop tents. I’ve shot about 8 of them including a Roofnest. Roofnest and AreaBFE make the same tent, it’s pretty good, mass produced in China but still good. Lots of accessories. I’ve been in a few ALU cabs and honestly for the money I don’t think it’s worth it. It’s decent enough but I’d rather go with the Bush Company Alpha, or something similar. I love my GFC but if I switched I think it would be for the Bush Company or an ikamper skycamp 2.0.

    • @OXFOOT

      The bush company alpha is very similar to the Alu cab and is my most recent upload.

      @@OXFOOT I think from the reviews I've read you might be right about Alucab. Lots of accessories. Bush company looks nice. But your review here on GFC might sway me. I wish there was a company with a slightly larger tent like falcon XL size, but with some of the features of the other brands where you can store bedding. Not everyone needs a 6-in thick tent, 8 to 10 would be fine to be able to store extra stuff inside for quick deployment

    • @OXFOOT

      The falcon XL was one of the videos I did. That thing is a monster! So much room. And yeah since this video I no longer live downtown so realistically I don’t need the low profile anymore. I still really like my tent but was leaning more forwards the super light. I don’t know what I was thinking spending 5k on a tent lol! It’s paid for itself though and I could probably sell it for what I paid for it, so it’s kind of an investment almost.

      So technically it is 8 feet from end to end, that would mean that you would fit but I’m not sure how comfortable... but it really depends. If you’re a back sleeper then that would be better, if you’re on your side with your arm up in might hit the top... do you put stuff under your feet with you sleep? Maybe consider putting in in your vehicle at night. My guess is that you would fit but you’ve got 4inches in height over me so it’s hard for me to tell.

    • @OXFOOT
      @OXFOOT  3 роки тому +1

      That being said a lot of brands of hard shells are about the same length so it’s hard to gauge. The only one I can say for sure you’d fit in no problem is the ikamper skycamp. It’s probably the biggest one I’ve been in yet.

      J.t.R. JP also, no rack needed. It has these big black metal brackets that bolt directly into the factory mounting points. Makes it only 7inches from mounting point to the top. Since I have crossbars mine is slightly taller than that though. The tent it self is 6” closed.

      Walter Poquioma so they have a version 2.0 (or it could be 3) but I’m actually doing a video on that very soon. From what I’ve seen it’s much improved from mine. There are now 3 entrances two on either side and the back window is a bit more rounded at the bottom. There is no structural change to then tent just an improved version. As far as the cross bats go let me find the link and I’ll post it in another response in a second.
