    Great points! I'd like to think Gerald and Patrick were trying to say to always make videos with your most authentic voice. The good and the bad without fear of a brand cancelling you. The S9 launch subjectively might not have been the camera everyone wanted, but it might have felt like those that were invited on the trip and given loaner cams were making content just to please the brand. If that's the case, it makes it harder for potential consumers to find the authentic reviews providing full context about a product before purchase. Definitely makes for a great conversation.

      Also some inside baseball on the LUMIX trip re: them not bringing creators they don’t think would like the camera, I WASNT SUPPOSED TO GO. I was a last minute decision to go because some brands see me as a more “pro” channel and the S9 wouldn’t be up my alley, I got invited on two weeks notice off a cancellation, and because Armando knew it was my birthday after NAB, and it had little to do with anything I’ve said about lumix

    Jamil, good video, people have opinions and those rarely have any viability to them, I found your channel when i was researching the Sony A74 and 200-600mm lens to see what experiences were had by photographers from all over, it was positive so i pre ordered one a few months ahead of the launch to the public, my friends uncle worked for Sony Canada so i had some good info from him, i like your channel, down to earth ,simple , chill and no fireworks going off unless you happen to photograph 👍, I'm just a hobbyist photographer and will never publish a video its all for my personal use wildlife pics, some small videos for friends/family, and come from a very big family, like you i work a full-time job got to pay them bills, video editing takes allot of time that i found i don't want to give up and would rather spend doing other things like taking stills of people, places and things, the peaceful side of the whole thing, peoples opinions are just that, nothing more they carry no weight or credibility ,it is just an opinion, I will always shoot Sony and always have, they are the most reliable product to me and that's all that matters , hope you get the Sony invite and I'll say hell yeah for you 👍

    Chi-town... This seems like a very thoughtful and self-aware take. It makes me wonder if it would have been better in the end if Lumix had actually paid everyone to make "review" videos, and everyone disclosed it as such. Camera UA-cam is a very interesting place when you compare it to other industries. We all create so much free content for camera brands in the form of reviews, studio tours, camera bag videos.... Maybe I need to start taping over all my Canon logos.

    I’m in the same boat as you. I’m not even a camera reviewer but have done a video or 2 on the Panasonic S5II - I recently got a USB-C hub with a 2.5 gigabit Ethernet port from a brand that asked for an unbiased review. The review was honest, I had 1 small problem with it. The only free product I ever got. I’ve made Adsense but that $300 over 2 years of UA-cam isn’t even enough to cover one of the 2 S5II’s I bought.
    Even more, I’m not a videographer, I was a DJ for 28 years. And yet I already got a comment that accused me of shilling the product and said my not calling it sponsored was illegal. It was a review sample from a brand. I’m about to shoot a video about how I’m going to start taking sponsorships as I’ve been asked. I haven’t taken any yet. I do love the idea of making UA-cam a business, but I have integrity. It’s such a fine line to dance and I think people like you and I who will take these trips for experiences and will eventually monetize stuff just have to be forthcoming about it. Maybe I’m viewing the whole situation as a hard lesson- but I think when the audience gets under our skin, we just gotta roll with it. I think in your content (and I’d like to believe with mine as well), we’re very very real w/ our audience. People will always call us shills even if we don’t have a brand deal. We can’t get worked up over their ignorance I guess 😂

    • @TechMixr
      @TechMixr 3 місяці тому

      Too add on about the embargo part of your video:
      The embargo thing is interesting. I had a video that hit 5000 views quickly about the S5II firmware update - I obviously was well behind vs those videos that came out pre release (I didn’t get the firmware early for obvious reasons) - before I say this, let me be clear: I get where you’re coming from. So please don’t take the next part as me calling you wrong. Because you’re not lol
      Most of the firmware videos (including the ones that were released before the firmware’s public release) didn’t perform as well as mine. And my channel again, isn’t a camera channel. I think what Gerald was trying to say about embargoes is that if you just strive to make content that’s better than those who had the pre release advantage, you’ll rise above. I had a taste of what he’s saying. Before that happened, I shared the exact same opinion. But it does suck when we as smaller creators try to compete with those larger channels who are given an advantageous head start.
      I worked extremely hard on that video, and when people comment that I’m a shill or come with ignorant comments, it gets under my skin. Because they didn’t spend 30 hours rushing a video against bigger UA-camrs. And if it failed to get over 100 views, I’d be double as angry. So I get both sides of this. I see your side entirely and I’m starting to understand Gerald’s point of view as well.

    There’s a reason it is illegal for politicians and office holders to accept gifts or favors. There’s a long understood trust relationship that gets muddied when you start accepting things from people. Idk why this seems so confusing to creators. It’s a well understood ethics concern, not rocket science.

  • @benjhaisch
    @benjhaisch 3 місяці тому +2

    Here’s the skinny on embargo releases, they are totally hit/miss and it really comes down to the product, your audience, and how many other videos are dropping of that same thing. My LUMIX S9 video did well (for me) despite a bunch of other videos dropping at the same time, but I’ve had other Sony videos get totally buried by the onslaught of other videos. I’ve also uploaded follow up videos months later that have done far better than the original embargo release video.
    Just filling in some context. So it’s not that embargo release videos are pointless, just that they’re hit/miss. For some videos in the future I’m going to probably wait a day or two depending on the product as to not get buried in the chaos :)

    • @aboynamedjamil
      @aboynamedjamil  3 місяці тому

      Hey Benj! I appreciate your perspective. I think maybe we are getting caught up in the term "embargo release videos." For me I mean the early access. When someone has early access to these releases, and are able to drop a video after the embargo lifts (whether that's on the embargo release day or a couple days after), those clicks do far better than the video that a smaller creator would be able to make in the months after. Those videos would mean THE WORLD to a creator like me. That's all I'm saying. And it seems a little out of touch for people who are apart of those releases to try to say otherwise. Thank you so much for watching Benj. Truly.

    People are not looking at reviews solely for entertainment purposes. The context of a “review” versus a “promotion” is very different. An athlete or celebrity doing a Coca-Cola commercial is not the same as a respected camera gear person claiming to be doing an unbiased REVIEW of a product by a company that is either paying them, or giving them free access to the product.
    I’m also not against creators getting paid and supporting their families, but if someone is only going to discuss the so called “positives” of a piece of gear, then be honest and call it what it is-a commercial/promo. And they probably won’t lose any followers over that either lol.
    Highlighting the positives and holding back in any way on the negatives to maintain good standing with brands is not a good faith review. And to shift blame onto viewers for trusting these creators that they’ve often been following since back when they were smaller and actually could provide real reviews, is dishonest. We don’t care that they’re getting paid or some perk. We care that they’re pretending that they’re providing unbiased reviews. We care that they’re being dishonest about how maintaining their relationships color their review. We care about being lied to. And that’s nasty work.

    • @aboynamedjamil
      @aboynamedjamil  3 місяці тому

      There is so much conflating in this post:
      You probably brought up the professional athlete thing because I mentioned Randy Johnson. Probably because you don't know that he's a photographer now. But MORE importantly you brought it back to the matter at hand. THE VIEWERS ARE THE ONES ACCUSING CREATORS OF GETTING PAID BY CAMERA COMPANIES. And it seems, that no matter how many times creators say it, they aren't.
      Secondly, a review is exactly what a creator makes it. VIEWERS skew the lines and feel some way when EVERY reviewer doesn't name EVERYTHING wrong with a camera/piece of gear. Gerald is ABSOLUTELY gonna find more things wrong with a camera than I am. Does that mean my review was any less honest than his? No. It just means that I didn't find it OR it's not a con to me. But the VIEWERS absolutely will attack creators with their comments. "OH this person was the only person who was honest." 🙄
      Lastly, it IS all entertainment. Creators have no obligation to do anything except create for themselves. I can build my entire channel around just talking about the pros of everything. And be absolutely justified in doing so. Right now on UA-cam there is a channel called "CinemaWins" where his whole premise is talking about everything great about movies. If you don't like how someone reviews things, don't watch that person. As a viewer you have that power. But attacking people because they aren't supporting your biases is the dirty work. Just don't watch. It's LITERALLY that easy. But this diatribe about politicians (which is completely untrue, dude what are you even talking about) is tired and a waste of everyone's time.

      How can you say "only" Casey did an honest review? He doesn't have the camera. I think maybe you should watch more videos. Because the videos that I watched from Kofi, Terry Warfield, and Benj had cons to say about the S9. I think maybe because they didn't say everything that you thought was wrong with it, you feel like they didn't say enough? Also, like Gerald said, these creators did a really good job making a balanced first impressions video. Also, did Casey even go on the trip? Seems to me that Casey just did the same thing that Patrick did and shit on it because he wasn't invited. I don't know man. Casey has to hate every camera. Just seems like that's his brand. Honestly, are you even interested in buying that camera? If not, why do you care so much about what these other guys said in their videos? It seems like you trust Casey, go with his take and let the rest be. Any way, I appreciate you watching this video. Thank you.

      @@aboynamedjamil I get it,...I am not really disagreeing with you, cause if you are a UA-camr and gets invited on a trip'... do go, you've earned it! But they could at least be honest and be Objectives,... I only used casey as an example as he is one of the few youtubers who has always been objectives in his reviews whatever brands he used, but to be fair he was not invited and I don't think he will or has ever been invited to those events, He is just way too objectives in his reviews but at least he is honest..
      And Yeah, I think the other youtubers like Terry and em' didn't' say enough,... From those that I have watched, that went on the trip the most "balanced reviews" were from Kai...he was spot on between the pros and cons of the camera...he even did a separate video about the pancake lens from the camera..

Best to pull up Cine D, CVP, News Shooter, or Red Shark, get the gist of a product without the fluff, and rent the item for yourself if youre interested. @@aboynamedjamil about the value of the content, or the start of an "influencer war"?
      As a journalist / published technical author I can say theres a clear dilleniation between publishing technical data / results, filming practical samples for analysis, and then injecting a bias into those results to fit a narrative relative to your brand.
      I'm of the place of "give it to me straight up" without the fluff. A lot of these UA-camrs will publish data or findings or practical samples, and then force their biases upon their audience relative to their own narrow use cases. When i personally write, I leave my biases / conclusions at the door, and simply report the facts. UA-cam videos (from the big channels) value are generally small, and I find myself scrubbing through all of it to aquire the tiny nuggets of information thats relevant to what I'm after, and then I'm "out". Gerald, PB, Tomasso, Josh Yeo, Cam Mackey etc. any of these guys - the tangible information in a 10 - 20 minute video amounts to maybe 20 - 30 seconds of actual worth.
      I'm not knocking anyone's aspirations of becoming a "UA-camr", but the medium or platform itself is inherently flawed, and users are actually starting to turn away from it for good reason. When personalities become the driving force of a channel, instead of the actual technology / information itself - its time to close up shop, which is what alot of these spokesman have become, unfortunately.
      Anyway. Solid video. I think you are right to get paid or compensated for what you do, but there is all a reasonable balance to this. I think unfortunately because most Influencers don't have a journalistic background, they are ill-equiped to balance this out. I suspect more "drama" to unfold over the coming days / weeks as theres too many big egos with thin skin at play here between the bunch.

    • @aboynamedjamil
      @aboynamedjamil  3 місяці тому

      As a journalist, you should know that people are gonna come to whatever conclusion they want no matter how honest or factual you are. Overwhelmingly, people don't want the truth. Overwhelmingly, people don't want honesty. OVERWHEMLY, people just want their own bias confirmed. That's the very reason there is so many attacks on "the media" these days. So you coming on here and giving this one sided take about how being a UA-camr is inherently flawed because influencers don't have journalistic backgrounds is just more bias. You're doing the very thing that you're railing against. Why even watch UA-cam videos if you're gonna just "scrub through for 20 seconds of actual worth?" Why watch UA-cam videos if you don't feel like you can trust the information being given? Why watch UA-cam video is you;re so against personality? This doesn't seem like a good use of your time. And frankly it seems disingenuous. You sound like one of those people who just view things to put them down and I can't get down with that.
      Additionally, personality is what makes watching UA-cam videos entertaining to me. I very much enjoy watching a James Popsys video way more than watching a Gerald Undone video (though I always watch all the Gerald Undone videos). But I understand that everyone doesn't watch UA-cam videos for the same reasons I do. But I'm not gonna put anyone down for the reasons that they do.
