    Really good & honest insights Karl, I think they team small business owners here as well in regards to the conversation mate & it’s sad that apprentices in big firms learn only some boring aspect of a trade & not everything they should.

      Hopefully not all large companies do that trick Dirk and they must be some positive stories out there. It's definitely happening though by some unscrupulous companies. Cheers mate

    Fascinating video Karl. I certainly never realised what is involved with employing an apprentice. What you and Jacob are achieving is amazing. So keep up the great work mate. 👍

      Thank you Craig very kind of you to say so. Ye you can see why a small business would struggle to hire an apprentice can't you.

    Many many years ago I got a job as an apprentice on a housing estate build in Hornsea for very little money. I was supposed to be learning carpentry and work as a chippy's mate but after 3 months of carrying bricks and general labouring, I called it a day and qwit, but luckily got picked up on another site and learned what a hammer was lol...
    It's great to know that nowadays there are people like you that are giving young people a chance. Nice one Karl

    Feel for you Karl, I did a 4 year Mechanical Engineering Apprenticshop with British Coal and in all went to College for 10 years inc Managment training. This country has been playing with apprenticships in one form or another for years, total farce. Colleges are not resourced or funded correctly and have no idea what they are doing year on year (I worked in Colleges for 20 years, so have seen it first hand). Keep up the good work and train your boy as best you can... Cheers Paul

    Hi I’m just in the process of taking on a plumbing apprentice can u give me some pointers I.e insurances contracts payslips etc many thanks

    • @karlpopewoodcraft
      @karlpopewoodcraft  Рік тому

      Hi Michael you will need to register for employee's liability insurance to claim your grant's be sure to do this because the first grant is 3k this year, I have an accountant so she registered my apprentice and did my payslip and advised what tax he needed to pay which you take directly from his her wage and pay it.
      You will also need to pay into a pension scheme for them but again your accountant can sort that. Basically get an accountant their not overly expensive for the hassle they save you. Just make sure to find a good one get recommendations my first one was dodgy so I left him pronto and now have a very good helpful one.

    The company I work for has a number of apprentices they have 12 months in college pipe fitting then in our workshop for 12 months then site for 12 months we have a welding apprentice who is doing the 18 month apprenticeship with day release so it depends on the area you’re in and the provider sorry your’s and your areas is lacking support here in Merseyside we seem to be blessed

    Would you have taken on an apprentice at all had it not been your son? I suspect not for the reasons you clearly stated. Apprentices will never be paid a huge amount, after all they are starting from scratch often with few skills & embarking on a learning process. That doesn’t mean they should be paid a pittance. As far as actual hands on training; it can only be given by those with the skills & knowledge & those people are in the community not in the educational establishments! I agree that there’s a lot of money supposedly going into training (colleges) which doesn’t seem to be value for money. Bring back the Technical Colleges from years ago, they taught practical skills for those wanting to become joiners, electricians, bricklayers etc etc. Keep up the good work & good luck!

      Hi Dennis I would not of hired an apprentice at this moment in time as the business is in its infancy however I would definitely hire an apprentice once the business is financially stable and making a good turnover. We will no doubt hire another apprentice in the future for Jakob to train up once he's experienced enough. In regards to the training I believe it should be supplemented by the college / training providers or what's the point in them being paid. I don't think setting essays on health and safety and the tree molecular breakdown is sufficient lol I would expect in this day and age good business development, CAD, COSHH, health and safety and most importantly practical skills such as fundamentals of furniture manufacturing. I also think £5 per hour is very good for an apprentice it's not bad for learning a trade and not forgetting these young people more than likely live at home with parents so it's all spending money in most cases. I also think their wages should be supplemented by the government as its extremely hard for a small business like mine to manage training a apprentice and earning a living, that way more time could be given by the employer to train and teach new skills. The training providers honestly do next to nothing at all for thousands it should be looked at by the national apprenticeship scheme but it's all more than likely to be old boys looking out for each other at the top.
      Cheers for the comment mate, I'll stop moaning now😂

      @@karlpopewoodcraft Karl, I messaged you a while back regarding this video. I do think that what you have written in this reply is not very helpful or a valid statement regarding training provided at colleges. I can only assume that you have had a bad experience with your provider, and maybe not really understand the workings of colleges, especially if you think that we do not teach about H&S and the other things that you mention. I would also like to point out that furniture making has changed considerably over the last 40 years, and myself speaking as a cabinet maker of over 40 years experience, so like to think I know a little about the trade. I am now in education as an instructor and I can assure you that we do teach the fundamentals including the correct way of how to use machinery and hand tools, not as is demonstrated by a lot of UA-camrs who have never gained any qualifications in the correct use. I will stop moaning now. If you would like to talk further about this I am happy to do so.

      @@garyblake3130 hi Gary what I have written and said in my replys are facts so it's unfortunate if you find it difficult to hear as this is my experience within the field. Like you I have a fair bit of experience as I studied carpentry and joinery at college 25 years ago then re taught myself through youtube books and local people in the trade. I also think you need to re read my replies as you have miss quoted me. I have no hard feelings against the individual instructors, In our case it seems to be the provider or the system that is failing. We haven't seen our instructor 2 months, Jakob has written several essays in his first 6 months and that is it, now tell me that is value for money for the tax payer and tell me I'm speaking unfairly or out of line. Unfortunately this is the service I, Jakob and the tax payers are receiving. My reply is blunt but it's all correct and accurate unfortunately. Regards Karl

      Crazy isn't it Keith, obviously this is only our experience but I can imagine it's pretty much the same in other trades ect. Your opinions are so limited in this field no wonder there's such a national skills shortage.

      Its hard mate ive ran my own kitchen and bathroom fitting firm for 15 years now on to my 4th apprentice. 2 are still with me as full time joiners. We all feel that all they got from the training proveders was a bit ov paper at the end. All there skills have been learnt on site. Somthig needs to change. The national trade shortage in my opinion is being made by the way the scheme is.
