Wow, I went to high school and early college with Terry. I first saw him playing with his band at a school dance, we must have been just 16, and he totally blew me away even back then. A couple years later I got to know him a bit (we both went to College of Marin, we both lived in Sleepy Hollow). He was always such a generous and inspired cat. Seeing him excel by leaps and bounds during that time was a thing to behold. I feel fortunate to have been around his greatness just at the time he was discovering it.
That’s amazing! You’re so lucky! You ever listened to Gran Hechicero? His percussion is from another planet! ua-cam.com/video/AkCzJDlzCSo/v-deo.html CC is English, cheers!
Wonderful conversation between friends. These guys in their 60s and 70s are still pushing the envelope and to hear them explain it, it is simply by being completely open to who they are. We can all aspire to this in whatever our field.
I'm not even a musician and I haven't listened to that much of their music since the 1980's, but I love hearing them talk about this stuff. It's so interesting. Like I said, I don't play an instrument, but I understand what they're saying. I particularly liked Vai's observation about "getting out the way" even as a listener, setting aside your ego, prejudices and preconceptions and fully appreciating the "god" inside someone else. It's a great way of saying "keeping an open mind", but it's a more accurate description. His observation about "success" and personal fulfilment is also spot on. As long as you are following your heart and doing the things which make you truly happy, then it doesn't matter what type of car you drive.
Thank you for this, wonderful discussion, wonderful ideas and angles and it's just such a delight to see two legends sitting down after all these years and just open up and share. Humbled and honoured
He's an empathetic guy and deeply spiritual. I saw him with the bald guy in 1992 it was amazing ( here in the UK) it was the 'Sex and Relgion' album tour.
Awesome meeting between two Zappa alumni and loved their collaboration on the Sex & Religion album, two of the finest players to ever play with the legendary Frank Zappa
I can't stop listening to "The Ocean Is The Ultimate Solution", I have been listening to it for years and 3 times today and I've recently posted it in chat groups and then this video popped up in my feed. Terry Bozzio, you are mind blowing on those drums.
I think that was some of Frank's best solo work on any track he laid down, and it was also a HUGE showcase of Parick O'Hearn on bass, as Frank had him record his work on an electric and double bass practically right after he hired him for the band. Another good drum performance I like is Terry's work on the "Black Napkins" track on "Chicago Live 1978" album. It was a clinic on how different time signatures could blend into a composition.
When true artists talk, they have the ability to express so many things that resonate with everyone who's willing to listen. This is no ordinary conversation, this is a lesson, this is like food for the soul. Thank you gentlemen
This is a real gem. Two brilliant minds on a profound discussion. It's inspiring and more interesting than speaking about drum gear! There is no mystery: good musicians are always smart people. Thanks to the @Drum Channel and of course Terry and Steve for their thougts.
I saw them in Italy but nore Bozzio nore T.M. Stevens were in the band anymore (they left before the album came out) i remember Scott Thunes was playing bass in the tour
Been a LONG time since I've been a big fan of Steve Vai's music. But I LOVE his interviews. He's so open, wise, informative, kind, humble, and just plain COOL! It's great to hear his stories. He's seen and done so much, with the greatest musicians of our era, and he just gives. Love the guy!
Met Terry back in 90' At one of his clinics, he was very generous with his advice then, which I still use to this day. It's great to see his passion of craft, is still burning strong!
I'm so grateful that in my lifetime I get to hear musical geniuses like these two let us in their thinking processes behind the way they create. Amazing interview.
HOLY COW! Two of my all-time favorite musicians sitting down and having a conversation about the creative process. I'm thrilled and in awe! So much talent and genius in these gentlemen. Yes, Frank would be proud.
Two of the very best digging down deep to discuss the meaning of life as it relates to creativity and those special moments when your vulnerabilities allow you to create openly, and freely, without incumberances.
I grew up listening to these guys. This is such a fascinating discussion about what is means to make music and to be true to yourself and to maintain your musical integrtity. Absolutely brilliant!
Wonderful conversation. Have listened to and loved both of your music for years. This conversation gave me a great feeling of actually getting to know you both better personally and I like whom I got to know a little better. Thanks for this.
THIS is by far my favorite talk between two musicians/artists I've ever heard. To be able to reach the outer and inner levels these two have reached and to be able to discuss it is such a beautiful thing. I'm totally in love with this interview. So thankful there is 4 parts of this. THANK YOU DRUM CHANNEL!!!!
I'm most of the way through this first part. This conversation is resonating with me on a level that I just didn't expect. I'm reminded of a conversation I had a while back when I told a friend about these crazy, cool music ideas that I sometimes work out and enjoy. And then I go to bed and let them return to the ether from which they came. He thought I was nuts for not recording them. Maybe I am, but sometimes I get so much pleasure from creating something I think is cool. And then just letting it go.
Love so much these two guys. I've spent one day with Terry in a recording studio in France when he played with " the lonely bears". A big day of my life ..... Thanks to be who you are Misters
Every word these legends said resonated with me. What they are talking about doesn't just apply to the art of music, but to all of the arts, sciences and life in general. Truly words to live by. Not just for Rock Gods but also the common person who wants to get the most from this miraculous experience of life.
Glad I found this Channel and I have the chance to tell you Terry that I love your drumming. It is amazing and I appreciate everything you've done. Great interview with Steve. thank you very much.
This is fantastic, its very overwhelming when you hear someone speak a language that you understand and feel, and that's the magic of music, thank you both for everything.
"Candle Power" is absolutely amazing. It may be the first time in recorded history where a double bass drum is following a chicken picken lead guitar note for note. What a fantastic collaboration. Thank you both for giving that to the lovers of real musicianship out here.
Great conversation between two incredible musicians that are friends. I found it very interesting and enlightening on a lot of the points that they were both discussing. Somewhere eye-openers that made sense to me. I'm looking forward to more conversations like this with two of my favorite musicians!
I spend a lot of my time teaching what you two brilliant and wise artists are sharing here. Here's my version of the topic you're discussing @ 18:00: In the middle of creating something, if my inner critique pipes up and questions my choices, I will say, "Look, I'm just taking direction from a higher source, so if you have an issue, take it up with him (or her - depending on the moment.) You are both inspirational. Keep up the good work. Bless you. - Paul
Let's be fair, whatever your taste in music, these guys know what they're talking about. Great stuff. Thanks. "Write a piece of music no-one is going to hear." OMG. Genius. This has been holding me back for years. Thank you, thank you, thank you 😊.
Dang, this a great podcast. I was 16 in 1996 listening to Punky’s Whips from Baby Snakes and Fire Garden Suite in my friend’s mom’s Volvo, have been a professional bass player the whole time, and to hear the stuff you guys are talking about on this podcast is super cool. Very inspiring.
Terry, maybe you remember me. We've met a few times in Marin. I WAS a drummer, now studying keyboard and enjoying the crap out of it! Bravo Mr. Bozzio.
I got here to check k out Steve Vai.. and ended up reminiscing about the best ever gig I went to .. the first night Jeff Beck played feat. Terry Bozzio at Hammersmith Odeon .. Guitar Workshop tour , ( 1991-1992 ?) As if the divine interfered ..
God bless you both - this is such a beautiful conversation about the power of creation. Amazing musicians both of you pushing Frank's vision and understanding of your individual powers far into the future of glorious musical potential...."music is the best!"
At 11:33 Terry reflects on a conversation with Steve about the "unconscious" that one does not know about and then there is an opening for an idea. This is what I call a Latent experience where previous material is resurfaced and created in a different form. I totally got what they were talking about. Love this interview with two brilliant minds.
@@dr.juerdotitsgo5119 really? I've never seen Gavin discuss the metaphysical/philosophical ascepts of music, only the mechanical aspects. But I'll take your word for it.
This interview blew my mind! I'm gonna start listening to Stravinsky again, and Varese.. But the first thing I'll listen again is of course candle power.. Steve and Terry together, what a treat! 😊🎶🕯️🎶🕯️😉
God what an amazing conversation. I could talk about this stuff all day. The internal side of art . Creat it for yourself! Wish the industry would support art!
I was fortunate enough to see Terry with Missing Persons on the Rhyme & Reason tour at Great Adventure in NJ and then a few years later saw Steve with David Lee Roth at Madison Square on the Eat 'Em & Smile tour. I feel so fortunate for those memories and words still cannot describe the feelings I had walking away from those concerts.
Ok Terry and Steve. You are amazing. The conversation got deep and I thought I was seeing two renowned psychologists discussing the inner workings of the unconscious within the creative process.

Great interview too guys🤘🎸🥁

Great conversation by 2 mega-talents and yet great guys.
To this very day, Sex & Religion is still one of my top favourite albums.
Vai and Bozzio playing the hell out of their instruments 🙂
