- Hello Traveller to Japan
Tokyo’s maze of public transport is difficult to navigate. My advice is to look at the poison green line of Yamanote. It covers major tourist attractions and you do not need a wifi to check where you are going. If you use an App, I recommend the “Japan Travel App” but Google is fine as well.
The Yamanote line circle is going clockwise and anti-clockwise through Tokyo. It is easy to remember this line and to get around. I review every station on this line. Today’s Station review is Shibuya and recommend Blues and Jazz bars for evening entertainment.
Shibuya is home to several notable jazz and blues bars where music lovers can enjoy live performances, listen to vinyl records, or just soak in the atmosphere. Here are some prominent jazz and blues spots in Shibuya:
Jazz Bars:
1. **Jazz Bar Pres**:
**Location**: Up Dogenzaka Street, near Shibuya Station
**Details**: Known for its intimate atmosphere, Pres Jazz Bar features murals of jazz legends on the walls. It's a small venue where you can enjoy both live jazz and vinyl records. The owner, Iwasaki-san, has curated an experience centered around appreciating jazz music.
2. **JBS (Jazz, Blues, Soul)**:
**Location**: 1-17-10 Dogenzaka, Shibuya-ku
**Details**: Owned by Kobayashi-san, JBS is famous for its vast collection of over 10,000 vinyl records. It's more of a listening room where music takes center stage, with drinks being secondary. The bar specializes in jazz, blues, and soul, with some hip-hop selections, offering a unique experience for music enthusiasts.
3. **Blue Note Tokyo**:
**Location**: Though technically in Aoyama, it's close enough to Shibuya to be considered part of its cultural landscape.
**Details**: This renowned jazz club attracts top international and Japanese jazz artists. While it's more of a concert venue than a bar, the intimate setting, excellent acoustics, and high-end service make it a must-visit for jazz aficionados.
4. **The Bellwood**:
**Location**: Not in central Shibuya but near Kamiyamacho, a short walk from Shibuya Station.
**Details**: This bar offers a luxurious setting with a focus on cocktails, but it also hosts jazz nights, providing a chic environment for jazz listening.
5. **The Room**:
Though more eclectic in its music selection, The Room is known for its funky/groovy music nights which include jazz and blues influences. It's a place where you can dance to live music without pretense.
6. **Shibuya Swing**:
More of a cafe during the day, this spot becomes a place where you can enjoy jazz in a relaxed setting. It's known for its coffee and cozy atmosphere, providing a contrast to the bustling streets of Shibuya
7. **Seabird**:
This old-school cafe between Shibuya and Omotesando stations offers jazz in a traditional setting. It's not specifically a blues club, but its dedication to jazz culture makes it noteworthy.
8. **Blues Alley Japan**:
While not directly in Shibuya, it's close enough to mention. It's one of the more sophisticated venues with live music, offering an eclectic mix that includes blues.
9. *Body and Soul Club* in Shibuya is a renowned jazz venue in Tokyo, Japan, known for its intimate atmosphere and high-quality live music performances. Here are some key points about this club:
10. **Club Camelot**:
**Location**: Near Shibuya Station
**Details**: While primarily an EDM club, Camelot sometimes hosts blues nights or events with a blues theme, especially in their lounge area. It's not a dedicated blues bar but offers variety in Shibuya's nightlife scene.
11. *Naru*
Naru Bar Yoyogi, often referred to as just "Naru," is a well-known jazz club located in the Yoyogi neighborhood of Tokyo:
Naru is described as a cozy, intimate jazz club with a family-like atmosphere. The venue is in the basement with a small sign indicating its presence, giving it an unassuming but welcoming vibe.
- The club is celebrated for hosting high-quality jazz musicians, both from Japan and abroad. It's known for its live music events, often featuring two or three sets a night, starting around 6:30 PM and 9:00 PM.
