Moonring: An RPG that's not Baldur's Gate 3 that's a serious contender for game of the year 2023

  • Welcom to our Moonring Review: this game brings back everything that was cool about Ultima games, throws in modern day user experience conventions and tons of innovation. This free to play game is unironically a serious contented for GOTY 2023 along with the massively acclaimed Baldur's Gate 3 and highly anticipated RPGS like Iron Tower's Colony Ship.
    It also has one of the best soundtracks in the world of games in recent memory. This dark medieval fantasy RPG is all you ever wanted and a bit more!
    Here's an excerpt of an overly excited me on discord after beating one of the relic dungeons:
    "Aaand that's another Relic Dungeon down...
    Dude... The Temple of Elemental Evil... The Bitterblack Isle Dungeon in Dragon's Dogma, Blighttown in Dark Souls, Watcher's Keep in Baldur's Gate 2, The Secret Facility in Solasta's Lost Valley DLC, The Endless Paths in Pillars of Eternity, any Dungeon in Darkest Dungeon...
    none of those... got shit on ANY relic Dungeon in Moonring...
    not even close..." (In difficulty and quality/fun)
    So go get it! You can find it here!

    Morrowind. Good memories. Too few similar games.

    It was good, and I was really impressed with the dialogue/clue system, but the last five to ten hours increasingly dragged for me. At the time I played, the relic dungeons were still prone to crashing, and so not only did I have to repeat the arduous, long series of battles down through the dungeons, but endgame mainly involved travelling back to clean up puzzles that I couldn't do the first time, and re-gathering clues for mysteries I had overlooked until that point. The downcast music and bleak setting started to get to me during the busywork, and with my gear and build already finished, completing everything began to feel like a chore because the novelty was gone. It is an unusually lonesome experience, and I would have really liked a permanent companion or two - the atmosphere is almost too strong and without any real moments or places of relief. For all the NPCs, none feel like people. Nobody has any agency or interest in doing anything except you. There's no fairy fountain or pretty hidden village to give you a moment to breathe. The mood is depressing; I don't think even one 'character' is properly happy for even a minute. In retrospect, I now understand the value brought to Dark Souls by its quirky, deranged travellers and calming Firelink Shrine music. The worst thing about the Undead Asylum was that it was empty of people. A setting can be as bleak as you want as long as it feels like some other people are around and facing the same problems.
    By the time I reached the true ending, even though I killed the boss in an 'unintended' and challenging way, it felt anticlimactic. There was one last spark of intrigue right at the end to remind me how I had felt in the early hours, but I left with mixed feelings; unveiling the secrets of the world was fun, the combat shield system was great, and there was no shortage of rewarding hidden stuff to find. It was refreshing to be left to explore and understand with absolutely no hand-holding. But I could have done with relic dungeons that were half as long, and even the true ending was sort of a downer. I felt like "I" saved an empty world, just as a test of strength or something, as if it was a Zelda game where everybody was already dead anyway - at that point, I'd have been happy just escaping from a land without beauty.

      This. Also pixel hunting. I was admittedly a bat but the visual clutter is disorienting. Spent hours to find key dungeons. And just keys in dungeons. Huge but samey dungeons. Infinite respawning random encounters. Flavorful but ultimately pointless fog. Just pointless satiety meter. Limited bestiary. A keyword magic system that is too shy to reveal itself and irrelevant. It really dragged on for the last third for me with soft capped levels and equipment. That said, it is fresh and enjoyable for the most part.

      Checkpoints are fairly frequent though. The only time it can set you back for A LOT of time is the Relic Dungeons and those change their layout every time you die so it's not technically "the same thing" over and over. But yes, in relic dungeons there is the risk of you dying and losing hours of your time whenever you die.

    Ι have grabbed the game. From what i ve seen this far (reached the main city and questing around it) it seems to be a great experience. Now that Colony Ship is over i am gonna invest more time.
    I really do love the main theme. It is equally wistful, adventurous, mysterious, and has dark undertones.
    Also i really love that the philosophy of the game is what i've been advocating: anti-bloat. The entertainment industry (not only video games) loves its expensive and useless elements, that drag their creations down, while failing to get the basics right.
    Moonring is a sign of good things that may come.

  • @TonkarzOfSolSystem
    @TonkarzOfSolSystem 8 місяців тому +4

    I’ve been playing Moonring for hours now and I don’t really like the “character progression”.
    Why? Well, for starters, there is no actual “character progression”. The only way to improve stats is by picking god skills. So you can’t really pick what kind of character you want to play - the number one idea at the core of what makes RPGs appealing.
    Beyond that, there’s an issue with skill points and the way they give stat boosts. To get a stat boost (always +5) you have to pick a skill. But skills each cost a different amount of points. So there’s an awkward and annoying tension between picking skills and efficiently using skill points for stat boosts.
    So we end up with character progression that doesn’t really do what character progression is supposed to do and a skill system that is annoying to use.
    I’m enjoying the game otherwise. They tried something different which I initially really liked, but after playing with it for a while I think it becomes clear why RPGs usually adopt one of the more common paradigms.

      @@ivanlarav I really really liked Rogue Trader but I am a huge 40k fan. Owlcat nailed the atmosphere and lore with their writing. For me, the problem with Kingmaker and Wrath of the Righteous is the 3.5 system which is in my opinion one of the worst iterations of D&D, since it heavily relies on casters due to the number bloat and necessity of pre-buffing every single combat at higher levels.
      But, Rogue Trader doesn't have that. The combat is really fun but it is only loosely based on the actual Rogue Trader ttrpg system and more of an Owlcat invention.
      I say buy it now if you like 40k. If not, wait until the squash all the bugs and finish the DLCs and get it on a sale.

    Hey thanks for this. I stumbled on this vid randomly and have just downloaded Moonring. I played Ultima 4 back in the late 80's for years on a Commodore 64. I got absolutely nowhere with it. Not a single quest completed, not a single virtue raised. Why? Because my copy was from a friend who lived far away and it came with no manual, no guides, and no internet at the time to look up anything at all. My friend was no help as he had never played it.
    Plus I didn't even know how to go on the old pre-internet message boards to get help/advice/hints which was how I learned years later most players who beat the game were able to do so. Even if I had known how to go on message boards it would have made no difference because I knew no one with a modem. Plus I lived in a very rural area with no one around me that knew anything about PCs.
    So what did I do? I played it like it was GTA before GTA was even a concept. Just randomly running into villages & towns swinging on anything & everything. Getting destroyed by the town guards, dying, or barely escaping with my life only to get poisoned in the wilderness fighting snakes, etc. And I did this for hundreds if not thousands of hours. Sooo for a long time now out of nostalgia and regret at never having properly played Ultima 4 I have wanted _something_ kinda like it but with a little bit better graphics & gameplay. Hopefully this is it. So thanks again and subbed.

      Boards? of what kind of foul sorcery doth thee speaketh of?? Internet (or online communications for that matter) weren't a thing in my country up until the mid-to-late-90's. @@TheHeartThatRunsCold Awards like GOTY, use three de-facto criterion.
      1st. Marketing. Again, no one stated "we are here to celebrate the ones who did better marketing", but it is a de-facto criteria. A game that nobody knows will hardly gain any popularity and therefore will hardly be nominated or voted for anything. They may gain notoriety in time if they are extraordinarily good, but word of mouth is significantly slower than an aggressive multi-million dollar marketing campaign.
      2nd. Popularity. Out of those games that made it to people's ears and eyes... Which ones ticked the most boxes of what most people want? (that doesn't make them better, but it makes them popular)
      3rd Quality. Of course, games that are sh*tty will still fail to be popular and talked about if their mechanics aren't great.
      Games like Moonring or Colony Ship will never win an award in these shows because
      1st. They don't have the marketing muscle
      2nd. They are not trying to tick the biggest number of the boxes for the largest crowd possible. They are well aware that they are niche products and therefore they must tick "the right" boxes, not the "the most" boxes
      In such sense, amongst their target audience, these games are extremely well regarded. So it's not just some fringe individual saying "this is my favorite" and being alone in that claim.

    • @TheHeartThatRunsCold
      @TheHeartThatRunsCold 8 місяців тому

      @YeOldEntertainment I'm not a fan of people saying, "It's just for this audience, therefore." There are plenty of games good enough to break out of their niches, BG3 being one of them. Though that's not "fair" as BG3's production value is quite great.
      If enough people talk about it, and they're good enough storytellers to get people interested. You can get anyone into anything, even genres they never knew they wanted.
      I had zero interest in the souls series, I stumbled upon a nice little channel named EpicNameBro, and I listened to this man passionately talk about Dark Souls 1 in great detail. He broke down my armor, convinced me, and it is now my favorite series in gaming. You should never tell people "it is a niche therefore." Simply sell people on the idea of playing it.
      With that being said, games like Moonring have the disadvantage of just not looking interesting at surface level. That in of itself, means the people who want it to succeed need to be clear about what makes it good. Then, one day, someone like Sseth plays it, and it sees a 10000% increase in players. Or just be Dave the Diver, which just blew up out of nowhere (for good reason).
      That Luck buff comes in clutch sometimes.

    Ok, but where's the story? Where are the choices that let you create what kind of character your protagonist is? Where's dialogue?
    Can I play a moody, brooding warrior with a heart of gold or a witty but volatile and cruel one while having the exact same stats, the difference being solely in roleplaying - choices and dialogue? If no, it's not an RPG, it's an equivalent of a dungeon crawl board game.

  • @tomanicodin

    I disagree that the best games are thise where you use your imagination. If you didn't like the second Castlevania it's because it was poorly made. Period. Baldur's Gate, God of War, etc. those games are good snd immersive being triple A's only because they are well made.

    • @YeOldEntertainment
      @YeOldEntertainment  Місяць тому

      1st. I never said that I didn't like the second Castlevania. The second Castlevania was Simon's Quest and it started the whole "metroidvainia" genre. It wasn't poorly made, it was a top tier game for its time. It was not voiced because NO GAME was voiced in 1987.
      2nd. A game DOES NOT have to be a triple A title to be good. A triple A title is defined by its production values, not by its quality. Good graphics, sound production, voice acting these things DO NOT define the quality of a game. A game can be a triple A title AND a good game or it can be a Triple A title AND a bad game.
      3rd. Baldur's Gate was not a triple A title when it came it out in 1998. It became a cult classic because it rocked the gaming world.

    • @tomanicodin
      @tomanicodin Місяць тому

      @@YeOldEntertainment I cannot find where you talked about Castlevania so I will assume I heard wrong and you do like it.
      I don't get why you are mentioning voicing in games. My comment does not talk about that 🤷🏻
      Again, I don't say a game must be triple A to be good, I'm saying that good triple A's games are the ones that are immersive.
      I disagree that all the stuff you mention doesn't relate to quality. Quality is a mix of all of those things: voice acting, graphics, sound, story, etc. You don't have to have all of them to have good quality but you need to make the properly to have good quality.
      When I mention Baldurs Gate I meant BG3, obviously since I was talking about triple A games. I think you just feel I was attacking you since you didn't reply to my comment in a natural way, you just spit information (pretty sure you have far more knowledge than me since you have a youtube channel that talks about games :) a bit randomly.
      Good luck in your endeavours.

    • @YeOldEntertainment
      @YeOldEntertainment  Місяць тому

      @@tomanicodin No, no, no. I didn't spit out information randomly. Every bit of information was used to counter the points you made on your initial comment. So we'll break your initial comment so that there is no doubt of this (or possibility of gaslighting).
      1st --> You said: "If you didn't like the second Castlevania it's because it was poorly made." Since I NEVER said that I didn't like the second Castlevania game (Simon's Quest) I assumed you were making the statement that it was poorly made. Specially since you follow that with "Period".
      And I connected this with the first sentence in your comment " I disagree that the best games are thise where you use your imagination"
      Because in the video I specifically mentioned that I found Simon's Quest immersive because the lack of VOICE ACTING allowed me to give it my own voice and tone in my mind, thus succeeding where Lamment of Innocence (the one for the PS2, which was very well-made) failed. So the data about the state of voice acting in video games in the 80's was used to back up my argument (it was not random data). I also find baffling that you say "I don't get why you are mentioning voicing in games." When the whole point about immersion was using voice acting as an example specifically.
      Which takes us to..
      2nd. You said "When I mention Baldurs Gate I meant BG3, obviously since I was talking about triple A games."
      About this. Only someone very young, someone who didn't play Baldur's Gate around the time of its release, would consider this assumption to be "obvious". Maybe for you BG3 is YOUR Baldur's Gate, because (maybe) that's the game with which YOU became familiar with the IP. But for US Baldur's Gate WAS a triple A game, because at the time it was released, it featured cinematic cutscenes, voice acting in some passages and lots of other stuff that were present only in very big titles back in the day. Plus it was a D&D game and it was published by Interplay... all of these things were "Triple A" back in the day.
      But speaking of BG3, I'll use it to illustrate why I disagree with your statement. While production values are top notch in Baldur's Gate 3, the game slaps me out of my immersion at every turn. Well recorded, well produced voice acting with professional actors... who say stuff that is completely out of place in a medieval fantasy game, stuff that sounds like modern 20 year-olds talk. The characters in this game reflect mindsets that are way too contemporary (that was also a bit of a problem in the original Baldur's Gate but to a lesser extent). Also the city of Baldur's Gate looks way too much like it was made by people who are not able to step outside their day-to-day reality to stick to the canon imagery of an IP that existed long before they did and had well established roots. So yes... to me, it's NOT immersive despite it's pretty locations and all its technical merit.
      Production values are a technical dimension that should serve to make an artistic vision come to fruition. All by themselves, they are meaningless. What do I care if there are " awesome hair dynamics" if the haircut feels futuristic in a game that's all about medieval fantasy? What do I care if there's a full orchestra playing a piece... that is inconsistent with the game's tone and vibe? I would rather have cheaper synthy music that delivers on the artistic end of things.
      Of course the technical aspects of production are related to the quality. But they are not the end-all be-all thing. They are not a a boolean of "good production values = good game" /"bad production values = bad game". Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines was atrociously made: bugs, glitches, completely broken stealth in the final stretch of the game, but it's still a cult classic (known for its immersion) and there's a reason for that.
