Nice to see someone giving out pro-level advice to the masses - for free! This is really great, solid info that you can use and add to, so you can build a good knowledge base. Awesome work.
cheers for the advice, recently fabricated my own mount frame for my canon dslr, i realised after my first day that filming a skate video is an art in itself, allot harder than it looks! will definitely sort out a filming board, thats what i need!! probably just use my old pool board with some phat wheels!! :)
Great Tips ! Could you also give tips when filming a static shot (fx a rail or stairs) when the camera moves close to the rail or ground when the skater lands the trick. Hope it makes sense :)
Yeah, definitely. Sometimes there are shots that you can't help but cut some, which is completely fine. I have a Canon T3i and a Rokinon 8mm and I've come to realize how much less you have to work with. It all comes with practice.
while you may be entitled to your own opinion theres just one small thing that bothers me with it. Many professional filmers while filming with a dslr do cut heads and parts of bodies because the fisheye is to small to be close. It isn't a question of being experienced or not it's just about the size of the fisheye. Now with a set up like Vx/Mk1 it is harder to cut because the fisheye is clearly bigger so I'd agree with you under those circumstances.
Yeah Opteka has some really nice stabilization products. Holding your tripod like a glidecam helps too, but I don't think nearly as much as getting some sort of stabilizer. Go out and try it; see if you like the result
alright im not trying to trouble you, but i was wandering if you could help me out though? Me and my homies are wanting to start filmng our tricks and don't know anything about dslr's. Is this a good camera for the job? Nikon - D3100 14.2-Megapixel DSLR Camera with 18-55mm VR Lens
Need some help. I can't ride and manual focus at the same time so I need to have a higher f stop so it all looks focused BUT... It makes the video too dark. What should I do to get a video in focus without loosing light
mike is awesome if you've seen the cinamatographer project you know what i'm saying. The custom handle he built in the video about handles he use for the cinamatographer project
Hey I dont want to spend 400 or more on a glidecam. What would be a less expensive alternative? Will a normal stabilizing handle produce the same results or could I just hold a tripod like a glidecam. Let me know...Thanks!!!
What would a good filming setup be? I've discovered I'm actually pretty good with a camera but all I have now is a gopro 3 that I just hold in my hand while filming lines. I want a better high quality camera that gets better audio and color and I would also prefer the fisheye to be more of a circle because the go pro lens doesn't really capture up and down that far it's just really wide so sometimes the body of the person I'm filming gets half cut off. I also want there to be a light so I can film at night but I don't know how to do that? and I don't know anything about the handle thing you attach the camera to. I also want a camera that can film AT LEAST 120fps at 720p for slow motion. Any recommendations?
+NickWorldwide i just started filming skating with a Hero 3+ Silver which does 720p/120 and a u-shaped cam caddy. there's a lot more going on than I thought, It's gonna take lots of practice to hold it steady and pointed in the right direction let alone maintain the right speed and direction
+NickWorldwide You're not going to get a DSLR or anything that can do 120fps. You could buy the sony fs700 (i think) that does 120 fps, but it's thousands of dollars. For me 60fps is plenty for slow motion. The super slow motion in skate videos is kinda lame anyways.
i an about to shoot skateboard vids and all i have is a phone and a cruiser by some good skateboars company and my friend has a alien but we shoot with a phone but the problem is you will drop it
+NickWorldwide Bought a Sony DCR-CX220 from a pawn shop, glued an adapter on and put a 37mm opteka fisheye on it. It films 1080p/i 29.6/60fps or you can record in .mp4 and have it 720p
Hey guys me and my mates all skate together and now wanna start filming and I was wondering if a Sony HDR SR5 with a U handle would be good enough just to make some edits. If someone could get back to me soon would be awesome. Thanks :)
can someone tell me if the canon VIXIA HF R600 would be a good camera for filming skateboarding? It seems like 1080p 60fps would be good for skating but i cant find a fisheye lens that would work for it, im a little confused with how to actually find the right one anyway. Please help lol
The only downside is, it's a 155°, not enough for ideal skateboarding shots, but you can use superview, which is capturing the whole sensor and dinamically stretching to 16:9 wide aspect ratio (which i don't really like) but it's a solution.
Does anybody know what kind of camcorders are good for beginner filmers? I wanna start making my own skate videos but don't wanna get stuck with a bad camcorder.
+OG Bobby Johnson No no, you've got it all wrong. You must make the effort to find the shittiest VHS recorder you can find so you can have that authentic look. Don't let HD technology lead you in the wrong direction.
I need help. My DSLR doesn't seem to have a steady shot setting, or I physically can't find it. I've read through the manuals and there is nothing about it. I don't use a full wide angle lens, I use a fisheye attatchment, and the steady shot really ruins the whole clip whenever i'm filming with it. HELP.
i just follow them with a polaroid and snap really quick. it's a bit choppy but i just edit it with motion blur
HAHA
Chungking Express style
me too
I feel like that's the footage we all used to watch back in the day 😂😂
I've seen videos like that in magazines
I love watching in focus alone and holding my VX while stroking it like an evil villain with a cat
best fucking comment ever lmao!!!!
the rolling shutter effect on the in focus logo actually looked so sick
Damn, that's THE best explanation of rolling shutter I've seen. Cheers.

Mike has some of the only dslr footage I enjoy watching
This information was extremely useful. I'm glad that I got to hear it from such a master of this craft. Ride Channel really came through on this one.
do not read this because it will ruin the video. u hear a cricket noise throughout the video
aidan jolly lmao 😂 I tried to hear it!
Fuck now I can’t watch this
Huh?
Bro why u do me like that
Aron Sch same bruh

this guys vx footy was so crispy that dog looked hd.got damn
Awesome advice. Good to know this stuff. Keep up the good work guys!
French Fred and Ty both pioneered the rolling long shot. They were just unaware of each other.
Great Tips !

One of the most usefull tuts I've seen! the explanations are awesome! thanks so much

this videos great, just started filming and photography in general, and small tips on technique etc really help :)
thanks mike
these need to be more often than every other monday

can RideChannel please make a playlist on how to edit skating. Like syncing the landing with music ect.
i agree, videos on basic and some complex editing would be very useful .
what fisheye lens do you use????
Mk1
@ridechannel what are the cons and pros of using wide lens vs fisheye when filming skating?
Thanks for this Ride, it's helping me with filming my mates skate.
Try both, see what looks better, every lens is different. On my long lenses I always have my stabilizer on. My fisheye does not have a stabilizer.
what about using a slider for stairs is that a good way? I want a video on sliders
do you have automatic focus on your dslr ? If not, how do you keep the skater in focus always ?
alright im not trying to trouble you, but i was wandering if you could help me out though? Me and my homies are wanting to start filmng our tricks and don't know anything about dslr's. Is this a good camera for the job? Nikon - D3100 14.2-Megapixel DSLR Camera with 18-55mm VR Lens

did they ever make the filming up curbs/down stairs video?
far eastern skate network!!! from japan my friend!
You’re og
Great vid bro, very informative.
what you rilly need is a vx you can get one used for at least 300$
and same with the fisheye
Can you do a tutorial on how to set white balance on a vx, and include the various filming conditions?
Thanks Mike! What kind of small rig or handle are you using? Looks interesting to me. Where could I get it?
Yo Mike, you should grab the camera with both hands when you stop, that way you won't get those shakes you keep getting.
is the canon t2i compatible with a macbook pro? thats what i have and im looking to upgrade from my sony handycam to a dslr.
pretty good explanation for rolling shutter
do you end up editing or color correcting your lines?
it would be awsome if you did one abaout color correction/ color grading!!
mike is awesome if you've seen the cinamatographer project you know what i'm saying. The custom handle he built in the video about handles he use for the cinamatographer project
What camera and fisheye do you use for your filming in this video?
Everything he explained applies to all setups.
when filming lines with dslr's should I turn stabilizer off on my lens?
Compatible with any computer but yes, compatible with a MacBook, I know this because I have one a t2i and macbook
Great video, I don't film but I still learned a lot.
Would the canon t3 be cool to shoot with?
Great video. This channel is so dope
how about a how to on how to follow film yourself?
On top of that, there's so many things you can do with these cameras for a good price.
I have a question, this may be stupid but I was wondering, when filming lines should i be in front of the skater or behind him?
obviously behind him
adjacent to them, slightly to the side of them, and slightly behind
whatever floats your boat

im just afraid of dropping my damn camera! haha
Just hold it

If you know how to handle the camera it should work
Great video once again
that wallie was insane
I really like his shirt. Anyone know what company it is?
What fisheye lens do you used for the footage
You are on almost every skate vid i see......
nikon d3100 is pretty good on manual focus and a nikon d500
are you using an hd fisheye
thanks. that was great.
How can i find a similar holder he's using with his SLR camera?
if you want to get serious about video than get a canon.
550D,600D,650D,60D are all good entry level DSLRs and great for video!
With the Gh2 or Gh3 you can get although serious videos !

what camera were u using at 4:55 and 5:16
Does anyone know the music in the intro
what kinda lumix do you film with?
try filming on roller blades bro...AMATEUR.
can someone tell me if the canon VIXIA HF R600 would be a good camera for filming skateboarding? It seems like 1080p 60fps would be good for skating but i cant find a fisheye lens that would work for it, im a little confused with how to actually find the right one anyway. Please help lol
+Isaac Lewis Anything would work, fish eye lenses are not super important.
A Camera I would recormend is the vx2000
Get a gopro hero 4 pretty much is a built in fish eye, 1080/60 720/120
The only downside is, it's a 155°, not enough for ideal skateboarding shots, but you can use superview, which is capturing the whole sensor and dinamically stretching to 16:9 wide aspect ratio (which i don't really like) but it's a solution.

OG Bobby Johnson a hd camcorder is very nice to begin you have to be alert that its a 37mm ring that will be eazyer to find a fisheye lens
+OG Bobby Johnson No no, you've got it all wrong. You must make the effort to find the shittiest VHS recorder you can find so you can have that authentic look. Don't let HD technology lead you in the wrong direction.
