i think that was probably the first skate video part i saw that really blew my mind, friend's older brother showed us welcome to hell and i'd only ever seen 411VMs at that point
@@totaled_camry Right! I loved 411 but those individual parts were such an inspiration to us. It's those parts that are what make skating an art form I think. Each trick or line can too but when they put in all that work and it becomes this tangible thing! So many videos and parts from back then. Still I hear songs and I hear phantom skating Lol. CCD sensors are global shutter, CMOS has a jelly wobble when panning,even stills today. Side by side CCD looks so good you’d think there’s image stabilization

HMC150 was my choice of panasonic cam right before the pandemic. SD cards are just so easy to work with

Yeah I was about to say. I filmed my video with the HMC150 and it uses SD, not p2.
funny how all the interviews talking about how great HD is are filmed in SD at 15 fps.

The VX and the HVX have the same image rate: 60 Hz. One is interlaced, another is progressive. For UA-cam upload you need to deinterlace 30i into 60p and you will get the same motion portrayal as with native 60p. As for CCD "imperfections", it is the other way around: CMOS has rolling shutter, which causes skew and jello, while CCD has global shutter. Any two CCD cameras produce similar image in terms of motion artefacts. Sony and Canon offered HDV camcorders at about the same time when HVX came out, and early HDV models from both brands used CCD sensors, so I am not sure why the Panasonic with its super-expensive P2 storage became such a hit. I suppose it was simply a matter of following successful filmers who chose the Panasonic.
Did Sony ever make a CCD HD camera that filmed to a card? I have only ever seen their HDV cameras that shoot HDV format to miniDV tapes
@@2012afterlife HDV by the spec was tape only, but Sony offered a snap-on recorder to record onto Compact Flash card or HDD.
@@TinLeadHammer interesting... I think that answers the question as to why Panasonic won that generation. They had cameras shooting Native (not 2:3 pulldown in a goofy ass interlaced wrapper) 720p60 from a 3CCD system onto memory cards. P2 cards, while annoying, are way less finicky and lower cost compared to a separate recording unit. Especially for skaters who move the camera around a lot.

This video made me check my camera for tweaks and ready for filming, just as a good skate part makes you wanna skate. I've been using a Nikon D5300 with Samyang 8mm fish eye the last two years. I got back late into skating at 27, now i'm 32 and since then i've been filming my friends for fun, but today a local skateshop released a contest video i filmed and i was really proud. Thanks Jenkem for this type of content you guys are great 👌

Surprised RB Umali was not in this conversation. He was one of the first proponents of HD and used to do great test videos with different cameras on his Vimeo. He is the reason I got my first DSLR set up and made my skate videos with it.
I absolutely loved the insight in this video. It was cool to hear directly from videographers how skate video recording evolved. While I understand the desire for skate videos to have a certain level of grit to them, in my opinion it’s a shame that so many monumental tricks were recorded in SD when HD cameras were readily available. It’s interesting that even today, skateboarding filmmakers are still trying to recreate the nostalgic feel of older cameras using modern tech.
I was an early adopter of HD & DSLRs in the skate scene and definitely caught some shit for it from other skate filmers. Even had some skaters who wouldn't film with me because I wasn't using a VX1k + Death Lens combo. But for me I saw what Ty & Spike did and was inspired by how they introduced new approaches to skate filming in a scene that largely hated change. In a lot of ways I owe my career to the fact that they were willing to take those steps, because the Fully Flared intro was the first time I realized that I wanted to do THAT with my life.
Jason Hernandez and his Nike projects also became a strong source of inspiration. Like the fact that he would record whole audio libraries of skate sounds to custom sound design his videos . . . at the time that was some next level shit!
But yeah I have always found skateboarding's damn near religious resistance to new technology and ideas pretty funny. In some ways it's unfortunate since it pushes some talented people away from skateboarding, though I am also kinda grateful that I found my way outside of the skate industry since my skate projects I produced were on my own terms and on the terms of the skaters I was working with.

You just haven't watched a good old VHS skate vid from a picture tube television. The movement looks so buttery. I think technically its about VX1000 having an analog horizontal resolution lines. Not an expert on it but the analogitivity brings it that certain movement and look.
@@Joope92 I think that buttery movement probably has something to do with the VX1000 recording at 60fps as well. Comparing VX to HD videos, the difference based on the framerate alone is pretty noticeable.
@@noober98704 I second that. At least when video recording first came to DSLR’s, many early models could only do 24fps in 1080p which doesn’t lend itself well to slow motion or even smooth playback of skateboarding
just curious why is it a shame that monumental tricks were filmed in SD? because if you're basing it purely on the quality or crispness of the footage than i implore you to check out Mark Suciu's "Ground Glass" part. Filmed purely on Kodak film, the colors, crispness, and aesthetic all make HD take a backseat, and will remind you why film is king.

Nice video, very interesting ! I used VX2000, and now I use a VX1000 / Mk1 with tapeless recorder, it makes it OG like the old videos i watched when I was young, and I got no glitch at all. But my favorite set-up is the HD 4:3 with the Mk1. Love too see what new is gonna happen in the futur of skate videos.

amazing video and such a crucial conversation for skate filmers...like me! ill throw an underrated camera at anyone thats reading this comment and call it "the skate camera that almost won": the PANASONIC HC-X2000 was soo close! it looks and feels/weighs like a vx and has some pretty amazing features. the main one that ive never seen before is an led light on the top-grip. it is placed exactly where you would need a light for night time fisheye lines. because of that cool feature and the fact that it practically serves as a mini HDPX (with higher-end specs etc) was a selling point for me so i decided to buy the camera. unfortunately i was disappointed. on my first day of shooting i noticed 2 major issues. the first being the record time. for some reason, there was a major buffer everytime i finished recording a clip. this made it very difficult to film multiple eager homies at one, as i could easily miss a clip because of the buffer time. the second issue was the fisheye. I bought the cheaper less-pretty opteka fisheye for it and this didn't cut it. because of where the sensor is located, and or the glass of the lens, the opteka gave a somewhat blurry outcome to the shot. it was almost there but didn't quite work. who knows maybe if i used an extra spacer ring it would have been more ideal but i ended up returning the camera for a sony nx80 which i have actually loved! it fits in the backpack easily and doesn't destroy my right arm/back. the zoom length is lower than most other camcorders which sucks but it gets the job done for the most part. still bummed that the PANASONIC HC-X2000 because it really was so close with the LED inclusion. maybe the next version will work? I think we need a skater-owned camera company in my opinion. that would be amazing. reply if ur a camera nerd and want to talk about the newer skate-camcorders! bataard serves as a huge influence for me btw.
Thanks for this comment! Shoot any low light with the HC-X2000? Have been looking at camcorder options like the HC-X1500 and HC-X2000 recently as my current setup (a7iii with 24-105mm) - although great image - doesn't really allow for smooth zooms while filming. There's some nice HC-X1 and HC-X1500 4k60p sample skate footage by Alex Havey. Seems like 4k60p is still pretty hard to get on a camcorder close to $2,000-2,500. Thinking about pairing the camcorder with a separate fisheye camera for safety.
@@Polsox Since I only tested the camera for a day, i didnt get to shoot any low light stuff but im sure its real good. I remember the reviews saying pretty good things, and with the LED on the front im sure its good for shooting something up close like a skater. In my experience, shooting skateboarding in 4k is a drag. theres no real reason to have a bunch more pixels unless ur shooting something professional and or need to punch (or crop) in a bunch. Its nice to have the option for 4k if ur shooting client work etc but if ur doing just skating, like the video says, HD60fps into a 30fps timeline is the move (that 30fps timeline method was new to me). When it comes to choosing a camcorder for skating, i look for 3 main things: 1) a VX-1000 type handle that has a record button on the top, where the thumb rests, 2) smooth zoom for long lens clips and 3) fisheye compatibility. The HC-x2000 had 1 and 2 down but lacked on the 3rd aspect so thats why I went with the sony nx80. It works well with the opteka, and with some scaling and good filming, u can make it look like an XTREME fisheye. I dont really know what you mean about pairing the camcorder with a seperate fisheye for safety though. Safety as in feeling safe with the options of being able to film lines and single tricks? Or maybe you meant you want to keep your fisheye safe...and for that, I would recommend a Tadashi filter. Hope this helps! I'm a nerd for this shit so I can talk about it for days.
@@theosanders7823 Got it, thanks for the response! Agree with many points. Yeah 4k60p might mean I would need a new computer to edit the footage too 😆. Just thinking about the next generation, not sure FHD60p will remain the standard in the long term even though it's still popular. With safety I meant separating long lens and fisheye to different camera systems: using the camcorder only for long lens since they tend to be pretty pricey and I would want to avoid any damage on it from a board hitting it or from me falling with it while filming a line - which I've experienced plenty in the past and will happen eventually to any skate filmer. So I would have a GoPro or cheaper mirrorless with a fisheye lens on a separate handle for fisheye/line shots. Not too thrilled about the way GoPro footage looks though... Added benefit of using two cameras - besides safety - would be the ability to record two different angles simultaneously.

i still remember having both the vx1000 w/mk1 and vx2000 w/mk2, then the dslrs came along and was like holy fuck i dont have to buy tapes anymore! lol now i have been using the sony a7sii for over 5 years now. Moving to dslrs/mirrorless cameras have actually opened up the world of still photography and am now a professional photographer
I’m old school and I think HD blows VX away, but film is the best.
anybody seeking alternatives to the xtreme lens should look into either pairing an hpx170 or hmc150 with a panasonic dslr, OR consider the sony fs700. the entire setup will cost you a fraction of what the fisheye for the panasonic cameras will cost you.

Whatever Justin Albert is using is the best camera/settings. All of his Flora episodes are some of the best filming/editing I've ever seen. I also don't see that colour anywhere else.
I've had them all. 16mm, hi-8 tape, mini DV... The shift to P2 cards was such a nightmare. Eventually I caved for the DSLR world and got a Canon 60d with a Sigma 15mm Fisheye. It just wasn't the same. Sure, it looked amazing but... I missed the years I filmed skate videos with the GL2 w/ Opteka .3x Fisheye. It was so bad ass looking and a joy/comfort to wield.
I like how this is basically all about video quality, yet they decided to record the VO with a vacuum cleaner. Great content though as always.
My issue is more when skate videos started using b-roll footage between almost every single trick because there's not enough footage to fill a part. People used to spend years filming for parts. This has nothing to do with VX vs. HD/4K etc...
I agree, more corporate companies started doing that a lot more, and a lot of skate videos use the exact same cutaways filmed the exact same, to me it totally ruins a lot of videos

I had a HPX/HVX in my internship at a local TV station.. we then switched to FS5ii and FX3. now they are for new people and interns to lern the ropes of cameras and interviews xd
I fucking love the HVX. I would always get clowned for having it. But it's so fun to use. Only thing i dont like about it is the viewfinder screen is way too small and far away.

Amazing. A-lot of online skate videos edit in the 60 Frame timelines and export like that, and it is not an ideal look. If they would only switch to a 24 or 30 frame timeline the look, and feel of the video changes drastically for the better.

You have all 3 of those cameras? I got a canon m50 with 7artisans 7.5mm fisheye as well, filmed a lot of skating with that thing. Looking at upgrading to something better with a speed booster and better fisheye

also sony's HDV cameras like the fx1000 and the fx7 were used a bit a while ago, probably ot in the skate industry though, nver looked great but always wondered if messing with settings could make it a great camera, also didnt use dumb p2 cards

What about the HMC-150? Not a single mention? It’s the SAME CAMERA electronically as HPX-170, but uses regular SD cards (class 6 or faster, super cheap) instead of P2 cards. Did skating videographers not know this? The HMC-150 & HPX-170 were even marketed together as companion cameras, which is how I came to buy my HMC-150 in 2007 (still in perfect working condition). HMC even has hdmi output for easier external monitoring instead of HPX’s SDI. I used the HMC professionally to shoot all manner of HD videos for a good 6 years until migrating to DSLR, then to 4K in 2018.
this was great! being some who loved buying vidoes, i remember when hd first came around i thought there were going to be so many coming out on blu-ray. then there were what, 4? final blare bonus disc, debacle, cinematographer project and pretty sweet? i stopped by videos that were filmed hd but sold on dvd, better quality on itunes.

Daryl Angel's crooked maw in HD sounds appetizing.
Oh no, the HVX-20x and HPX-17x (and some HMC) are infamously equipped with 960x540 sensors. Not even SD(576 lines).
Though it's 3CCD setup and use some pixel shift to accomplish some bayer-like pattern(but SD camera have 720x576x3pixels!), its luma resolution looks much worse than a 2MP bayer-pattern sensor at that time. And I don't even want to mention the optical resolution of lens! Also, HD was already a very affordable and widespread thing at that time with HDV. The actual break-through of these three series is offering rather affordable flash media(P2 or SD card, compare to Sony's SxS) while the market flooded with miniDV tape back then.
I know it's more like a nostalgia rather than technical, but please keep nostalgia then.

Sheesh, it's not the camera, it's the cameraman. Peer pressure and brand loyalty kept you guys chasing expensive toys rather than crafting cool looks with whatever you had. Upgrade mania and nostalgia have kept generations of shooters pouring cash down a well of fads.
