If you have never used a treadle sewing machine before, here are some tips to help you get started. Make sure the wheel turns in the right direction, so start the wheel with your hand, feel the motion with your feet, and start treadling to keep the movement going. Stop the wheel with your hand when you want to stop sewing, and keep your feet perfectly still to prevent the wheel from moving. If the wheel turns in the wrong direction when you are sewing it will snag the stitch and break the cotton. If the machine has a reverse setting the wheel will still turn in the same direction.
This machine was manufactured in 1913 by Bernhard Stoewer in Stettin, northern Germany (now Szczecin, Poland). - Навчання та стиль
I was impressed with your video and then I noticed that you are wearing period shoes, stockings, dress and long sleeved blouse. My wife calls it "period treadle sewing".
Those added touches make the video outstanding.
Thank you Lizzie.
Just wanted to say that I mastered sewing with a treadle by watching your video 5 years ago. I now prefer treadling to electric motor sewing and am as fast a seamstress as I had been before. I'm quite sure a significant number of your views are the direct result of me sending folks from the Facebook vintage sewing groups here. The whine of electric motors had begun to grate on my nerves. I love listening to the rhythm of my treadle.
Mindy, lovely to hear from you! I'm so glad that you have discovered the joy of sewing with a treadle machine. It's one of those things that many people are reluctant to try, thinking it is going to be more difficult than it actually is. Thank you for encouraging people to give it a go!
In summary: Hand starts -- feet follow -- foot action is controlled by the "forward" foot with a rhythmic "push, push, push . . ." while the rear foot helps it coast along in between pushes. Then hold steady in place while stopped so it doesn't drift backwards. But ALWAYS, the hand controls the startup. Got it.
Great. Happy treadling.
Took me about 10 minutes to get the hang of it, even after watching this video.....then my 7 year old wanted a try. She picked it up instantly. Then the 4 year old, he had no trouble either.
Fun for all the family!
Miss Lizzie, this video is going to help me SO MUCH in mastering my treadle singer that my husbands grandmother left us, Ive also checked some of your other instructional videos and I am very excited. THANK YOU SO MUCH for your investment of time and resources to educate others on these wonderful antique machines!
I just bought a beautiful tredle machine today, also German made, with original instructions , it was originally purchased In 1931, it's a vesta machine! Thanks so much for your videos!!
OMG!! I was born not far from Szczecin and I've never heard about this brand of sewing machines! Fascinating!
Thank you so much! Without this tutorial who would have the nerve to buy a treadle machine? I have been wanting to buy one for a long time but not knowing how to use it always stopped me.
Thank you, Ms Lizzie! Your videos are helping me clean & oil the 1924 Singer treadle that I learned to sew on 60 years ago. This simple tutorial is extremely appreciated also! Thank you!
I am going into garage tomorrow to try this out with treadle 99k. Using paper is a good idea. I am sewing a boat cover. I have heavy needles, could hardly get them out of the box! It should be 6 months practice and about an hour to do the job lol. If I get the hang of it, I will have many other uses for machine. I could be the first man to sew his very own straight jacket!
Thanks Lizzie!
The 99k never came with treadles
Meant 66k of course. Found that the machine will sew heavy tarp but you cannot get the feed to move the bigger pieces. Stitches are also tight together . So it can be done, but it is not suitable for tarps really. @@graceygal2664
I see this video was done 10 years ago but I just got my first treadle 2 hours ago! Im happy I saw this video!
Lizzie, you rock. Great advice. Advising one to use lined paper for practicing (treadling, stitch lengths) is wonderful advice!
Oh my, those lovely shoes!
Thank you for the tipps! Just got my "new" machine running again, and was testing some stitches.
Thanks to you, I now know how to thread it, and how work the treadle. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for this wonderful video! I own 2 treadle machines and have never used either one. Your tips on how to get started are great! I intend to try again to sew on my treadle tomorrow.
lovely machine nice narator clear voice easy details thanks v much
Thank you. I have been having difficulty figuring out how to use my 1920 Singer until a friend told me I had to get the wheel going in the right direction. Your video was very helpful. I understand what she was trying to describe to me now.
Good to have these around just in case the power is out, great tutorial video! Thanks.
Outstanding. Thank you for your time. I was going to buy electric sewing machine and this is so much more amazing.... Thumbs up!
Excellent as ever. Beautiful machine with the inlaid table. Never used the two foot method on a treadel before will give it a go. Thanks again.
You are so very good , you must be an educator . I really enjoyed your video and your machine is beautiful. I was just given an 1890 White Trendle and can't wait to get her going. Thank You very much for sharing with me.
You have such a lovely voice. I learned a lot from this video. Thanks so much.
That's the first thing I noticed too. A soft melodious voice, perfect diction.
This is the best tutorial about treadle I have ever watched! I was wondering if I would be able to use the lovely treadle Singer 66 Lotus which is sold near my town. But now I think that I may splurge on this beauty and try your method. Thank you so much for your video - you are a fantastic teacher! ❤
This is VERY HELPFUL, i just got my treadle running again.
I enjoyed watching this.
Lizzie, Very nice demonstration. It was done with grace and charm. I'm off to give it a try Thank you.
Thank you so much. Your demonstration was excellent. I really liked your idea of practicing on a piece of paper.
These tips work. Well done. Keep up the nice job.
Thanks! Things you learn on the net:) I'll keep an eye on the wheel when my Jones machine arrives, thanks again:)
That's a very nice machine! Most I find here in the US have the decals worn and the clear coat is worn off or cracked. I love the reverse function too! I miss that on my treadle machines.
Great thanks Lizzie!
Muchas gracias muy interesante
I've been around treadle machines all my life. We have 2 in the house. I think they're both Singers, but I know nothing more than that. Neither of ours are functional because the cord has been broken. If we got the cord fixed and did some minor repairs on ours, they'd be wonderful.
When my brothers and I were younger, we would get on the floor and start peddling it with our hands and see how fast we could get it to go.
Hello Sarah, if you and your family go to my blog and search through the information I have posted there, you could get probably get your treadle machines working without too much effort.
Happy New Year,
Muv
Sarah Stewart. you can still buy new leather cords and shuttles and shuttle bobbins brand new. or rather, I did ten years ago. Don't neglect the oiling needs of your machines. they work with literally no friction if maintained.
I just bought a leather drive band for my machine today. I called our local quilting shop, which has a sewing machine repairman on site who also repairs antique machines. the drive bands are pretty much universal, and not terribly expensive. I paid $8usd for the one I got today, but I also ordered one from China that will arrive in January, and that one was only $1.50 and free shipping through eBay. It is the same band.
just call around sewing/quilting shops, and you should be able to find what you need. :)
We grew up with one in our dining room and we always did the same, when i bought a 128 a few weeks ago, all of the memories came back. When i finally got it unloaded, i was standing there looking at for a long time, but it wasn't feeling as nostalgic as i remember. Then i looked at my tractors beside me, it dawned on me, so i grabbed my dirty work blankets and sleeping pad i use to lie on the ground. I had to lie down and look at the intricate metal and big Singer name cast as a 5 year old would, and then it felt just right!!
Cords are available. At one of the 2 in vintage machines in my house is working.
Love it! Thank you.
Thanks for the informative video. Someday I hope to own one of these types of machines.
So accurate the foot position. Thanku, am going yo practice.
Thank you! Very informative!!!
Thank you Khamomil - I hope you find a beautiful treadle very soon! Muv
I take my feet off the treadle board when changing needles and such. I sort of block the treadle with my foot to the side edge; you don't want a painful accident.
No it is not the original people but one hell of a paint job. As a novice I did not know it entailed so much work. Thank you and keep posting these wonderful tutorials.
Paint job??? Erm no, the is machine is unrestored, merely cleaned up. All the decals are original.
I apologize......my comment was for another post. The guy stripped an old Singer and painted it orange.
Thank you. ı learned a lot from you.
Thank you!
Hello Jagun, From a shop near home a few years ago. I am trying not to wear them out too fast because I love them so much. They are a German make, Rieker.
Hi Lizzie. So wonderful to see you sewing on this especially with your vintage shoes. I was wondering if you have ever seen a NEW HOME treadle vibrating shuttle machine over the pond there? I inherited one in a beautiful carved parlor cabinet with a like new machine - the rose decals are stunning and in perfect condition. I want to treadle, I'm just not sure about the vibrating shuttle. I mostly sew on Singer 201's and 15-91's
Great video, very informative. Do the wheels on all treadle machines go anti clockwise or just this model?
Hello Shangas, I hope she lets you have turn with it.
My grandfather put on a motor for my grandmothers treadle sewing machine, my mom now has it.not sure which brand it is.It has it's own little table that it is in.
Very nice indeed! I inherited one. If I could get the hang of it and some parts I see no reason why I shouldn't use it. They still use them in foreign countries today. Good enough for me! Than you.
Cynthia Browning . Singer still ( as recently as 10 years ago for sure ) makes the treadle machines and ships them to many countries. i use a model 127 and have no problems with it. If I did, I would buy a new one if I couldn't find an old one locally.
Your shoes are amazing!!! Where ever did you get them?
Nice footwork
Grandmother used to have a machine like this to do quilting.
this machine is good for heart health and make it more strong because it training the ankle area if we use it daily i bought one but it's not older
Hello Doris,
I love your name! Congratulations on your new machine - I'm sure you will be very happy together. For new treadle belts and full instructions on how to fit them go to
the Helen Howes Sewing Machines website.
All the best Muv
Hello Gingercatni, Most sewing machines (not just treadles), including all Singers, have balance wheels that turn anti clockwise. It is very unusual to have a balance wheel that turns the other way. Muv
What kind of foots as available for these type of machines ex: zigzag, overlock etc pls make a video on how to use these foots if they are available
I fond that for me, if I was going to stop, try to stop about halfway down on my toe end. Then when I restart just make sure to push my toe down to continue the stroke not my heel.
Hello, I just purchased an 1897 Singer sewing machine. Would you happen to have any videos on how to thread and use the machine. Thank you.
cool mechanical technology
Hi Lizzie I’m wondering what it could be if my wheel does not turn as I treadle? I have to continually pull the wheel to make the needle move.
You are good i like thèse
Where can I purchase one of these machines?
saya suka antik
Reminds me of my mom's machine. Not sure what brand she had though
Lizzie,
As you piecing the quilt blocks together I noticed that you used a guide screwed onto the machine bed.
Does the Serata use a low shank foot like a Singer low shank sewing machine?
In other words, can a 1/4" quilting low shank foot be used on this machine?
ibsoarin Yes, it is a low shank, and the feet are interchangeable. I often use the braiding foot from this machine on my Singers.

May be thread cut and tensions because wheel is not going in the right way i was about to have depression 😯😔until i watched this vedeo thank you so much 😁everything is going ok
Mine is going back and forward all the time ...not yet figured out how to keep it stitching forward
Hello Joyce Ann, I hope you make lovely clothes for your doll very soon.
Samantha, Go to the channel page and click on "Browse Videos" Also visit the Lizzie Lenard Vintage Sewing blog. Loads of information about different types of machines - long bobbins, round bobbins, Singers, other makes... Good luck!
that German machine must have had a rotary bobbin in order to work in both directions. is that correct ?
No Gregory, it's a long bobbin machine. Here are some pictures showing the shuttle:-

Lizzie Lenard . thank you Lizzie.

Regarding ability to do reverse, or not:
It's not about the bobbin. Reverse function is found in the way the feed dog action is engineered. In machines that can do a reverse stitch, the wheel still keeps going "forward", and bobbin keeps doing exactly the same thing. What happens is that the lever which controls stitch length is set up such that you move it up, and the action gets shorter and shorter until it is essentially at a balance point where the length is zero, at a stand still, and if you keep raising the lever, it starts to swing the feed dogs in the opposite direction. So wheel, bobbin, needle, and thread feeding all keeps going "forward", but the fabric gets pulled backwards by feed dogs which are now oscillating in the opposite direction.
Little bed and wheel
I'm in 5 grade here in the Philippines and I can't really do right in the treadle how can i do it
Watch the video and practise.
Jai 30 d'expérience ,je fait de la broderie sur cette machine.
You don't know what you're missing.
Kanhasemilega. Yeshe stand
But mine is computerized
Mine isn't.
All that is missing is the robber baron telling you to get back to work! More garment!
It's like driving a stick shift car! I'll to stick to the electric, or the hand turning machine.
